Welcome to the July issue of Crowle & Ealand Arrow

This month we follow the story of Mike Banks, from Crowle .Mike’s project of cycling his late Dads WW2 travels is split into three parts; firstly to cycle his escape route from Amiens to Le Havre which he undertook a number of weeks after the Dunkirk evacuations. Follow his story on page 12 and we will keep you updated on his adventure over the next months!

Keep those articles coming in, this is your local community magazine and it would be good to hear about any events over the Summer months.

The deadline for the August issue is a little early and is Wednesday 5th July for delivery by the 1st August.

Picking up my father’s route in Amiens, France, I cycled the route taken by the 51st Highland Division, and Operation Ark Force following the roads my dad used in 1940 as he evaded the rapidly advancing German invaders several weeks after the Dunkirk evacuations. My route took me from Amiens to Le Havre via Dieppe, St Valery-en-Caux and Fecamp. I planned to start the 2nd section later in the year, but then Covid happened.

However, during the lockdowns I had the opportunity to write and publish the first of 3 books I plan to write about my project.

But at last, following a global pandemic, injury and illness the continuation of me following my father’s route is now back on track with me re-starting my Father’s Footsteps project, and with optimistic confidence we have a ferry to Caen booked for the 3rd May, which, fingers crossed, should see me resume my cycling on the 4th May. My 2nd section is divided into 11 stages and in total my route is 731km. It begins at Sword Beach, Normandy and finishing a few kilometers before the Netherlands border. This will be followed by me cycling my 3rd section, through the Netherlands to Hamburg, North Germany during the autumn of 2023.

The route is taken directly from my dad’s Battalion War Diaries (6th Battalion Royal Scots Fusiliers) my route takes in the following destinations; Ouistreham – Thury Harcourt – Bernay – Herqueville – Haucourt – Amiens – Arras – St Aubin – Deerlijk – Geel – Lommel. In real time my route covers the Battle of Normandy and the liberation of France and Belgium. I have no idea how long this trip will take, because although my spinal injury is much improved I still have a little nerve damage affecting my movements and fitness. I intend to cycle how I feel as the days go by. Also I plan to take two cycles along with me, a touring bike and an e-bike and I plan to utilise these depending upon how I feel and the terrain I find myself in, which according to my route profiles is without doubt rather lumpy to say the least.

As with the first section of my project I am again being sponsored and collecting donations for the Royal British Legion via my JustGiving page, which can be found at; htps://www.justgiving.com/ fundraising/mike-banks5

In January 2020 I started a 3 section cycle ride to attempt to follow my dad’s WW2 travels through numerous theatres of war in Western Europe some 80 years after my dad was an active participant.

Garthorpe Village Hall has the opportunity to apply for funding to build an extension, which will house a new larger, modern and food-safety compliant kitchen.

We intend that about 80% of the cost will be met by grants; the balance will come from fund-raising and the hall’s Development Fund.

The comments of the community that use the hall are a key consideration for all grant-giving bodies. So please can you let us know what you think of this idea.

Email reply to garthorpevh@btinternet.com is all that is needed but please let us know if we may NOT disclose your identity or your comments to the grant giving bodies. (Comments will not be made public).

Thank you
