North Lincolnshire Council’s Sports Development Team is currently establishing a programme of Nordic walks that will start from various locations across North Lincolnshire. All of which will be led by fully qualified Nordic Walking leaders.

So what is Nordic Walking?

Nordic Walking is the fastest growing fitness activity in the world and is used by individuals, personal trainers, health clubs, physiotherapists, doctors and health promoters because it is highly effective, affordable and FUN! Nordic Walking is an enhancement of ordinary walking only twice as effective! It uses poles to in order to add two major benefits to walking The use of poles means the upper body muscles are used as well as the legs The poles help to propel the walker along – this means he/she works harder than usual yet the support given by the poles makes it feel easier!

It is a specific fitness technique and is not to be confused with trekking or hill walking as the poles are not planted in front of the walker but in a specific way that increases the use of the upper body.

Nordic Walking is quite unique in that it provides benefits for everybody from those with medical problems to the super fit.

Whatever your goal, whether it be becoming more active and improving fitness levels, weight loss or overcoming a medical condition, or simply meeting people and having fun then Nordic Walking may be for you.

Nordic Walking is a great way to get your whole body moving and to significantly improve the condition of your muscles, heart and lungs. It will boost your energy levels and help you to ward off medical conditions such as: Heart Disease and Strokes High Blood pressure Diabetes (type 2) Bowel Cancer Osteoporosis and Osteoarthritis Stress and Anxiety Obesity We will be starting a regular Instructor led Nordic Walk in Epworth on Friday 11 th May, starting at 10am, meeting in Epworth Garden Centre Car Park.

The only charge is for the hire of the poles, which will cost you £1 per walk. Individuals with their own poles are welcome to come along free of charge.

The Crowle Show will be on the 22nd July. We have lots of new classes competitions and attractions while still keeping the traditional and well loved show attractions.

New for this year we have the Produce show, with over 80 classes there will be lots of competition but a chance for lots of prizes to be won. We also have a Gundog display for this year and a new beer tent run by Red Melon who specialise in outdoor events. The equestrian events are still on and we hope that boys girls men and women, inspired by the Olympics come down and enter the show jumping.

The Crowle Scrabble Club is looking for new members. We are re-locating to Crowle Methodist Chapel in July on Wednesdays (dates to be arranged) between 2 4pm. You will be very welcome, we are not Competition standard and provide refreshments, charge is £1 each towards the room.

Christian Aid Week in Althorpe and Derrythorpe The House-to-House Collection took place as usual. The total collected was £260. A big thank you goes to all who gave and to all who collected.

POLICE REPORT Vicars Walk and Church Street, Crowle – Anti-social Behaviour and Criminal Damage to Property.

During May there have been three calls regarding problems in this area. One related to something being thrown at a property on Vicars Walk but no damage was caused, another related to speeding vehicles during the early hours of the morning but the vehicles had only been heard and so no PCSO 7889 PC1717 vehicle/ owner details were available. General observations Wendy Frear Graham Godley were put out to police units in the area but the offending vehicles were not traced. The other call was concerning a group of youths playing football in the church grounds. The Neighbourhood Team did attend but the group had already left the area prior to police arrival. No damage had been caused. At the Neighbourhood Action Team Meeting held at Keadby on 15/05/2012 concerns were also raised about youths congregating outside the youth club on Church Street swearing, smoking and kicking footballs at properties.

The Neighbourhood Policing Team are conducting more patrols in the area and working with North Lincolnshire Council Safer Neighbourhoods and Youths Services to resolve the issues raised.

Potts Lane Car Park and Market Place, Crowle - Anti-social behaviour and vehicle nuisance in the car park and youths congregating and causing a nuisance to local residents.

During May there were two calls for service for Potts Lane and six for the Market Place. The wall to Potts Lane car park was damaged as a result of a vehicle colliding with it but there were no witnesses to the incident. Also the Police were involved with a theft enquiry relating to the area and enquiries as still ongoing with persons on police bail. The calls to the Market Place related mainly to youths congregating in vehicles, playing loud music and concerns about the manner of driving of some of the vehicles. Driver’s of vehicles identified have been spoken to and advised regarding the noise nuisance and several youths have been dealt with for traffic and drug offences which have come to light on routine stop checks.

The Neighbourhood Team include the area on the regular patrol matrix and stop and check any vehicles and persons in the area. Often groups are spoken to in the Market Place but are not committing any offences and so the Police have no powers to move them on from the public area. Any offences which are revealed are dealt with positively.

Hi Visibility Patrols Amcotts and Keadby Regarding Acquisitive Crime.

During April there were a number of crimes committed in the Axholme North Ward relating to aggravated burglary, burglary and a robbery of cash in transit. The crimes are being investigated by the Serious Acquisitive Crime team (SAC formerly CID) and the investigating officers are in contact with the victims. The seriousness of these crimes has raised concerns amongst local residents. In order to reassure the community, additional resources have been patrolling the area. These have included uniformed and plain clothes officers along with support from specialist departments such as the roads crime section (a specialist unit who target criminals who travel to commit crime). The Neighbourhood Policing Team has also provided additional patrols and will continue to do so.

Residents are asked to be extra vigilant paying particular attention to their home and personal security and taking note about any incidents, people or vehicles in the area which they believe may be suspicious. PC Godley over the last weekend attended one call made in good faith about a possible burglary in progress. This turned out to be relations of the home owner calling late at night to collect items of furniture by arrangement but the Police would rather attend and deal with those involved at the time than be informed the next day when should any offences have been committed, the offenders are more difficult to trace.

28/05/2012 UPDATE = Police enquiries are still continuing regarding the above crimes with one male having been charged with the burglary at Keadby Post Office. High Visibility patrols are still being carried out in the area to reassure the local community.

The Greatest Show on Earth Where have all the tickets gone? Like many other people, I applied for Olympic tickets but didn’t get through the ballot. So I shall be watching ‘the greatest show on earth’ from ‘the best seat in the house’ – that is in front of the TV. Is it really ‘the greatest show on earth’? How about the River Pageant celebrating HM Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee or the concert in front of Buckingham Palace or the pomp and ceremony of the Service of Thanksgiving in St Paul’s Cathedral? Were these not contenders to be called ‘the greatest show on earth’? The enthusiasm of the crowds speaks for itself.

How about ‘the best seat in the house’? Yes – but where’s the atmosphere, the cheering, the celebration of victory? I have sat on the terraces at football matches and watched the snooker in silence at The Crucible in Sheffield. It’s totally different from watching ‘Match of the Day’ or highlights from the day’s play.

For some people this year, the greatest show on earth will be a wedding, the birth of a child or a special anniversary. The best seat in the house is obvious. When it comes to God, He is the greatest show on earth and the best seat in the house is seating or kneeling before Him.

Hi my name is Katie Chester. I'm 14 and used to go to Eastoft Primary school when I was younger.

Last June my PE teacher (Emma Downs) told me about the chance to hold the Olympic flame. She nominated me and I was put through the application process.

In August I found out that I had been shortlisted but still stood a small chance of actually being able to be a torchbearer. It was in December when I found out that I had been selected. The committee needed some more information from me but on March 19th it became official.

I am really excited and still really surprised.

I will be running with it for approximately 300 meters near Grimsby on the 27th June.

This is an amazing opportunity which I will never forget !"

Pictured in the photograph are members of a brand new singing group called the Isle Community Singers. They were formed just over 10 weeks ago and have received partnership support from St Norbert’s Catholic School, Crowle and North Lincolnshire Council.

They are a community group and want to stress that they do not audition beforehand or single out any singers during the rehearsals, they just want to have fun and come together to make music enjoyable for everyone!

They are looking to expand their membership, so if you can sing, if you want to sing or even if you feel like you can't sing then they are the singers for you!

They rehearse every Wednesday evening (not including school holidays) at St Norbert's Primary School from 7.30-9.30pm and are directed by Hannah Doherty, a Music Graduate from York. They will be performing at various local venues in the forthcoming months.

Family fuelled cricket tournament A group of locals have put their heads together to organise a cricket tournament and family day at Outcast Cricket Club, Belton on Sunday 15th July.

The newly formed group, the Smegal Sixes are organising this event in memory of Liam Fitzgerald who sadly died from kidney cancer at 42. The group are now established as a Macmillan Supporter Group as they wanted to give back to the charity for the support given to Liam through his cancer journey.

Anthony Fitzgerald, Liam’s brother is a main driving force behind organising the event and commented “We wanted to support Macmillan due to ….please feel free to add in whatever comments you like here.

The organisers are thinking of the whole family whilst planning this event. Youngsters can enjoy the children’s entertainer and later on entertainment includes a performance by Steve Womack as well as some local bands. Food and drinks will be available throughout the day (feel free to expand here about what will be available).

Not only will people benefit from such a wonderful day, they’ll be helping to raise vital funds for those affected by cancer. Year 11 Prom 2012 Year 11 students from The Axholme Academy celebrated the end of their compulsory education with a Prom held at Doncaster Rugby Club on June 1st. Many students eschewed the traditional limo, arriving instead in a red Routemaster ; other stylish means of transport included an articulated lorry and a trike. The evening included a formal 3-course meal and disco and ended with everyone, staff and students alike, on the dance floor.

PGL 2012 32 students and 4 staff descended on Caythorpe Court in Lincolnshire for The Axholme Academy’s annual PGL trip during the May half term. All enjoyed socialising around the tent area and sleeping under canvass until the torrential rain arrived! Despite the wet weather the students were able to challenge themselves on the High Ropes course, abseiling down the purpose built tower and leaping off of a wobbly pole to catch a trapeze. The students were required to work together as a team to complete problem solving activities, climb Jacobs ladder and navigate the Challenge course. Other activities that students got involved in included fencing, archery and rifle shooting. After a successful weekend, all returned exhausted but exhilarated and looking forward to next year’s trip!

The visit of the Watoto Children's choir over the Queen's Jubilee weekend was again a joy and a privilege. It was super to have a church full of people from Belton, the rest of the Isle as well as Scunthorpe and even Rotherham. The concert was called 'Beautiful Africa' and it included dance, videos of Uganda, songs and testimonies of how the children's lives have been transformed by the love of God shown through the work of Watoto Child Care Ministries. The choir were looked after by nine local families.

Since their last visit to us Watoto have expanded their work into Northern Uganda and Southern Sudan. Half of the children in the choir were from the north. One of the girls, Lydia, featured in the Sunday Telegraph in May. The choir sang for the Queen at Windsor and, at a private reception afterwards, Lydia had given the Queen a hug!!

Lydia's story makes chilling reading. Her father and mother were killed by soldiers of the Lord's Resistance Army and Lydia and her six siblings fled into the bush. They survived and their Grandmother managed to send them to an aunt in Kampala. Unfortunately their aunt lost her job so the children had to return to Northern Uganda.

Here Watoto found them and provided counselling, therapy and loving families in their Watoto village and today Lydia is a loving, happy 10 year old.

So, thank you to all who came, who hosted children, who helped with meals, who cleaned church and who counted money. We were able to send ÂŁ646.99 to Watoto Child Care Ministries as a result of the freewill offering.

North Axholme Allotment Society teamed up with Crowle Primary School over the weekend to help revitalise their ecogarden.

Parents, teachers and allotment members all pitched in to clear away weeds and make the area safe for the school's gardening club to come in and continue growing vegetables. The eco team are now growing sweetcorn, pumpkins, runner beans and strawberries alongside the ever popular potatoes.

Teacher Tracy Hotchin said: “We have been improving our nature area for a few years now, and have a thriving gardening club. Last year, we began to develop a relationship with the allotment society, and this has gone from strength to strength. We were very happy when they offered to come on a Saturday morning to come and clear some of the weeds away!”

Mrs Hotchin added: “Since we have been able to plant lots more vegetables, and the children have loved taking responsibility for planting seeds and watering the plants. They are very excited for harvest time!”

SECRET GARDEN PRIVATE CHILDCARE have a fabulous re-developed Garden area which is suitable for ages 0 – 11 years olds. We have a separate baby area, as well as separate water & digging areas and a beautiful gazebo and willow den. We value outdoor play and recognise that it is as important as indoor play and are extremely excited that our children have this wonderful garden to play in and enhance their learning.
