News, News, News, News, News, News, News, News, News...

After the great success of the Spring and Autumn dance programmes this year, The 2013 programmes were supported financially by the Community Public Health Improvement Programme of North Lincolnshire NHS and by North Lincolnshire Council, and that support has allowed us to run the dances in the villages of Westwoodside, Epworth and Crowle.

In the 2013 programme we were given many great comments, including ‘This has been one the most enjoyable experiences – friendship, conviviality, fun!’

We will be returning to those villages in 2014 and running the afternoon folk dances along the same format. The dances will again focus on engaging with those over 40. The Lys St Georges Folk Dance Band will again be providing live music and there will be expert tuition and guidance.

The dates for the 2014 programme are: Crowle, Community Hall are Thursday, 13 March Thursday 20 March and Thursday 27 March

The dances will again start at 2.30pm and run until 4.30pm. Admission will be £2. No experience is necessary. We welcome individuals and couples.

We look forward to welcoming back those who have danced with us in 2013 as well as new dancers.

St Oswalds Althorpe have finished their most recent project called Renaissance Phase Two. The project had a number of elements, all designed to make the Grade One listed Church suitable for Worship and Community use.

The Church had previously benefited from new Kitchen and Toilet.

Just completed are the following really nice features: 1. A partial re-ordering - removing two rows of Pews, making good the floor and carpeting. This has created a larger communal and café area.

2. Redecorating the inside of the Nave and Chancel throughout making a clean and bright environment in which to meet. This included urgent repairs to the Windows.

3. Installing a new Sound System with fixed speakers, microphones [including radio mikes] and Music Centre. There is also a Hearing loop.

4. Minor Improvements to lighting and heating including low energy LED lamps and more under Pew heaters. However affording to heat a Twelfth Century building continues to be a challenge so do not discard your warm winter clothing yet!

5. The installing of Solar-Voltaic Panels on the south-facing Nave Roof to generate up to 4kW of electricity, which can be used to reduce our bills.

The cost of these improvements, including VAT and Architects Fees, was approximately £32k This was mainly grant funded with substantial contributions from WREN [£17k], NLC Leader Funds [£13k] and PC and PCC [£2k].

We were able to open again for our Remembrance Service where we had an attendance upwards of 70 people and the facilities worked well. People have said how much they enjoyed their visit.

We are sure that these improvements will help the Heritage Church, of which we are very proud, to be sustainable in the future.

Tia is looking for a New Home!

Crowle Christmas Craft Fair News Saturday 30th November the Christmas festivities got under way in Crowle with the annual Craft Fair in the Community Hall. With many local stall holders showing their crafts it was another successful year and many thanks to Jon & Caroline who organises the event. The event was opened by Town Mayor, Cllr Paul McCartan, pictured with Rafferty from Jerry Green Dog Rescue, which was the chosen charity for the event and £153 was raised.

As part of the ceremony the store kindly made a £200 donation to the Mayors Charity, Crowle LIVES First Responders in recognition of the important work they do in the area as shown in the photograph with the local LIVES volunteers. Also photo'd is Lincolnshire Co-Op Chief Executive, with store manager Irene showing Town Mayor, Paul McCartan the locally sourced British products and energy saving technology introduced to make it a flagship store. Paul said, "Its wonderful to be able to help welcome the Coop back to the town, this level of investment and creation of 15 jobs sends a very clear signal that Crowle is a good place to invest and we look forward to future progress in our town."

After 46 years and £1.2million of investment, Crowle has officially welcomed the Co-operative movement back to the Town. ON

Monday 2nd December if was officially opened by Lincolnshire Co-op Chairman - Sir Malcolm with many Co-op senior managers & Directors, The Town Mayor, Paul McCartan, Town Councillors, and former Co-op employees.

St Norbert’s Catholic Primary Voluntary Academy Welcome to our January Newsletter!

Our school has seen a few changes since our last newsletter, firstly with our successful conversion to Voluntary Academy status back in October 2012 and construction of our new outdoor classroom. Our Basic Skills Quality Mark has been renewed together with our Extended Schools Quality Mark. In addition, we have just undergone a rigorous inspection by UNICEF and I am pleased to say that we are now a “Rights Respecting School”. Our staff and children are aware of the principles and provisions of the Convention on the Rights of a Child. This not only covers our own children but all children in the local and global communities.

In respect of “global communities”, a party of staff, governors and pupils travelled to Malealea, Lesotho back in February this year. In conjunction with Ken Dunn, of Connecting Communities Worldwide, they worked with villagers to plant trees, provide a water supply and repair and reconnect electricity. They also delivered the clean burn stoves and educational equipment which parents, pupils and friends of the school had raised funds for. We are continuing to forge links with our new friends in the Makheteng Primary School and a further trip is being proposed for 2015. If you are interested in finding out how you can get involved, please let us know.

In conjunction with North Lincolnshire Council and the Rural Touring Scheme, we are hosting two theatre company visits during February. The first is called “The Golden Princess” and the second “The Flying Flapper”.

The Golden Princess is a tale of a beautiful princess who is so beautiful she has to hide her blinding beauty behind a mask.

This production is suitable for families and children aged 5 and over. The second is also suitable for a family audience with children over the age of 5 but may also be of interest to different generations.

This is the story of Doris Grimblebottom a retired lady living in the Lincolnshire countryside. Her life becomes one big adventure when her washing machine breaks down! Both performances will start at 6pm and refreshments will be available. Tickets are very reasonably priced at £2 per adult, £1 per child or £5 for a family, (2 adults and their own children) and are available from the school office. Watch out for the posters around Crowle.

By the time you are reading this article we will be past Christmas and into the New Year. One of my regular tasks in the garden over the Christmas period is to spend a couple of days pruning my established freestanding apple trees. The time to prune freestanding apple trees is when their growth is dormant – i.e. between November and February. Trees growing in a restricted form – e.g. cordons and fans – are better pruned in late summer.

An important trick to master when you are growing apples – and wanting to prune them successfully – is to be able to distinguish between growth buds and fruit buds. As they suggest, growth buds will generate new, woody growth, and fruit buds will produce blossom and, with the help of these and other insects and without the intervention of untimely frost, will produce fruit.

At this time of year when the leaves have fallen from the trees, it is a good time to inspect the branches on the tree and you can tell which buds are which. Remember that if you prune wood containing fruit buds the tree will not produce any fruit from those branches or spurs.

A fruit bud is typically fatter and more rounded than a growth bud which will lie flatter on the branch. All trees will produce both types of bud, but younger trees are more likely to have more growth buds than fruiting ones.

Trees produce new growth from the end of branches and also from spur systems – those collections of short, stubby growth.

So, I would suggest that you stand in front of your freestanding apple tree and look for the new growth it has made in the previous year. If you look closely at the end of a branch or spur you will see a mark across the wood indicating where new growth started in the previous summer. This mark is called a terminal bud. The colour and texture of the wood at the end of the branch or spur will also be lighter than older wood.

If you leave the new growth unpruned it will grow on from a new terminal bud. Fruiting buds will only emerge on wood that is 2 years old. So, if you take off all the new wood made the previous year (i.e. at the terminal bud) that wood will not develop any fruiting buds next year.

The challenge is to strike a balance between allowing new, developmental growth and reproduction of fruiting buds. You also need to keep in mind how much fruit of the tree can bear.

As I said last month, if you take off too much wood the tree may react by putting on a lot of growth next year. To avoid that, try taking out no more than a quarter of the new growth.

In the next article I will take a final look at pruning, looking at pruning both those stubby, spur systems that can produce many apples, as well as creating a framework for developing new growth and fruit.

Ofsted inspection 29/30 October 2013 Outstanding maths at The Axholme Academy!

Ofsted inspectors judged achievement in maths to be outstanding during the recent Ofsted inspection at The Axholme Academy.

The GCSE results of 2013 placed maths results at the academy in the top 1% of schools nationally.

The overall effectiveness of the academy was judged to be good as were all other categories including achievement, behaviour and safety, quality of teaching and leadership and management.

Inspectors made the following comments – The curriculum offers broad and exciting opportunities to students Students behaviour is very good. They are very proud of the academy and have excellent relationships with each other and with staff Parents are very positive about the school and the majority of parents would recommend the school to other parents Care and support for students is good. The academy knows which students are at risk of not doing well and there are strong systems in place to make better progress Attendance is high Teachers have good subject knowledge giving students a range of engaging activities helping them make good progress Older students respond very well to leadership opportunities. Peer mentors from KS4 help younger students with friendship issues and Y7 & 8 students value this help There is a strong extra-curricular programme of sport and a wide range of visits that enhance students cultural and moral education.

Principal, Joe Sellars, said ‘This is the best report that this school has ever received and I want to thank parents, staff and students for playing such an important part in securing an enormously positive outcome.

It is important to understand that it is much harder to gain good judgements under the new inspection framework. Ofsted tell us that ‘the bar has been raised’ and it certainly has. During a very intense two days it became apparent that we were very close to outstanding judgements. We were told that the academy has made ‘great strides forward since the last inspection’. We will now work relentlessly towards securing outstanding outcomes next time we are inspected’. The report is available on the academy website now and on the Ofsted website.
