Happy New Year to all our readers and lets hope its a good one! Happy New Year to all our readers and lets hope its a good one! First of all I would like to welcome 1000 more readers to the Arrow. I have had a few requests over the past 3 years to bring the Arrow into Misterton. Therefore from the January issue of the Haxey and Westwoodside Arrow the village of Misterton will be included. Also from January the Epworth and Belton Arrow will be delivered to West Butterwick. The Crowle and Ealand Arrow is distributed to Eastfot, Keadby, Allthorpe and Derrythorpe. The 3 Arrows now have a distribution of 10,000 copies. So if there are any advertisers out there who have thought about ringing me to advertise but never got round to it, give me a call. If you can make a note, The Crowle Market takes place in the Market Place on the 2nd Saturday of every month from 10am to 2pm.

There is a mixture of fresh produce and craft stalls, such as fresh Grimsby fish, confectionary and gift cards. The market is organised by the Crowle and Ealand Charter Group. Their objectives are to give residents access to products not currently available in the town and bring additional shoppers into Crowle. This will also assist the shops we currently have. Any money made from the markets will be ploughed into investing in the market and arranging events in the Market Place.

Please note the deadline for February issue is Thursday 12th January.

and Local History" ,a course running for 10 sessions,10am to 12 noon, at the Library (via the rear entrance ), Crowle Hub, High Street, from January 9th 2012. A Workers' Educational Association course , for more details contact Bryan Longbone, the tutor, on 01724 849979, the WEA on 01724 844245 or e-mail bryan@longbone.myzen.co.uk The photograph shows a scene not too far back, only some 60 or so years; and which depicts the south road entrance to Crowle Market Place.

Wider footpaths, the Spar and other shops altered, not a great number of cars, in fact pushbikes are to the fore, the straight - through road, without traffic lights, the Cross Keys pub and more. This was looked at recently in the class, and compared with the present state, the next step would be to go back 60 years from the shown scene of about 1960 to recall further differences - I reckon there would be as many.

Such and the everyday routine lives of local communities between Doncaster and Scunthorpe are considered from the social and local history aspects. How people managed their everyday lives, how they earned any money and spent it and other routine factors of living. Use of old resources is much used.

The Isle of Axholme Patchwork and Quilting Group meets every Friday afternoon 1 o’clock to 3 o’clock at the Baptist Church on Station Road in Epworth we are all of varying abilities and are a help each other group.

We will also teach anyone who is interested how to do Patchwork, there is more to it than just sewing squares together! It usually turns out to be more of a social gathering than anything else but we do get a lot of sewing done and have also made quite a few quilts for local charities as well as all our friends and relatives. It does become addictive.

Anyone who calls in ‗just for a look‘ is very welcome. The cost is £2.50 per session, this includes tea or coffee and a biscuit, also a raffle (we sometimes have cake instead). Our person in charge is Avrill Kitchen on 01427 810997 We are a happy crowd and welcome guests p.s. we also have one man in our group, he comes with his wife and they are making a double bed quilt together for their bed.

AXHOLME NORTH POLICE REPORT Recent Offences of Arson at Keadby and Ealand.

In November there have been arson attacks to a garden shed at Keadby (12/11/2011) and to three industrial units at Ealand (05/11/2011).

Update: - The Humberside Fire and Rescue Service and Police PCSO 7576 PCSO 7889 PC1717 attended at the scene of all of the fires and the respective Paul Fearon Wendy Frear Graham Godley investigation officers established that they were deliberate arson attacks. Enquiries are still ongoing and anyone who has any information about the incidents are asked to contact the Police on the new 101 Non emergency telephone number or via Crime stoppers on 0800 555 111. The Humberside Fire and Rescue Service Community Safety Team are offering home fire safety checks on telephone number 0300 303 8242.

Potts Lane Car Park and St Oswald‘s Church, Crowle.—Anti-social behaviour and vehicle nuisance in the car park and youths congregating and causing a nuisance to local residents at the church.

Update: - Temporary CCTV has been installed at Potts Lane Car Park and has had an extremely positive impact on the calls for service. Latest figures show no calls for service relating to Potts Lane during November. There were four calls relating to the Church Street area over the Mischievous Night and Bonfire Night period relating to antisocial behaviour, egg throwing and vehicle nuisance. The driver off one vehicle identified has been issued a written section 59 warning regarding his manner of driving. This success in dealing with the problems was discussed at the Neighbourhood Action Team meeting on 15/11/2011 and it was decided to downgrade it from the number one priority and to monitor the locations and any calls for service until February 2012 before a decision is made regarding removing the locations completely from the priority list.

Millennium Green Park, Edinburgh Road, Keadby.—Criminal damage and anti-social behaviour by three adult males in drink This was a priority set at the Neighbourhood Action Team Meeting in August 2011. The Neighbourhood Policing Team frequently patrols the area and has in the past dealt with the three previously mentioned males.

Update: - There have been no calls for service during November relating to anti social-behaviour issues at the Millennium Green Playing Field at Keadby. A complaint was received regarding youths congregating on nearby Mill Road but no offences were seen to be committed and the youths moved on. With regards to the three males, it was reported that one male was now off the alcohol and there had been no further issues with any of them around the village.

Recent Issues Arson = A female from Crowle is on bail to Grimsby Crown Court for the offence of arson.

Production of Cannabis = A male from Keadby has now been dealt with at court for the production of cannabis and has been sentences to eight hours community service and to pay court costs of eighty five pounds. Possession of Cannabis = A male from Crowle has been reported for summons after being found in possession of cannabis. Police Bail re Drugs Offences = A female from Crowle is still on Police bail whilst enquiries are ongoing with regards drugs related offences at Crowle. A male is on Police bail with regards to cannabis plants being found growing in premises at Keadby. Another local male is on police bail for the possession of drugs which have been sent to the Forensic Science laboratory for analysis. Vehicles seized = Two quad bikes have been seized in Keadby due to having no valid insurance cover and a male has been reported for summons for traffic offences. Police Bail re Burglary, Theft, Drugs and Traffic Offences = A male is on Police Bail following the execution of a search warrant in Crowle and stolen property/drugs being recovered. Road Traffic Offences = A male from Crowle has been issued a written warning regarding his manner of driving around the town. Road Traffic Offences = A male has been reported for summons for driving without a licence and valid insurance cover and will be appearing at North Lincolnshire Magistrates Court at Scunthorpe. Theft = A local juvenile is to appear at a Respect Seminar following his admission of theft.

Walkabout = Police Surgery The Local Neighbourhood team will be conducting a walkabout on Station Road area of Keadby to encourage community engagement commencing at 2pm till 3pm on Monday 9th January 2012.

Isle Group of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust Member’s Slide and Digital Evening Our January meeting will be on Thursday January 5th when we have our annual slide and digital evening.

This is always a popular meeting when various members show us a short selection of photographs on a wide range of subjects, not necessarily natural history. If you have some photographs to share with everyone, please let Geoff or any committee member know before the evening and then the programme and equipment can be organised. You don‘t have to be a brilliant photographer, we just like to have lots of people sharing their interests with us.

Work Party Our monthly work party will be on Sunday January 8th. This month we will be working at Epworth Turbary and we will be meeting at the entrance to the reserve at 10am and finishing at about midday. Everyone is welcome, all you need is enthusiasm, working clothes and gloves, and possibly a flask and snack.

Reptiles Geoff Trinder will be giving an illustrated talk on reptiles from around the world at our February meeting which will take place on Thursday February 2nd so this is a date to put in your diaries. Geoff is a well known photographer and speaker and this is a fascinating subject, so do come along and find out more about them.

All our indoor meetings are held in the Stephen Jones Hall at the rear of the Methodist Chapel, Low Street, Haxey on the first Thursday of the month and everyone is welcome, you don‘t have to be a member. There is a small admission charge of £1 and there is a raffle and refreshments.

Don‘t forget that bird food is always on sale at our indoor meetings and at Geoff‘s house in Belton, at very competitive prices, just ring if you need anything. This was usually grazed by sheep for two years, thus gave time for the salt to drain off. Wheat often followed for three or four years in succession and then was succeeded by a rotation of potatoes, wheat, oats, and flax or beans. Most arable crops did (and do) very well on warp land. In 1826 wheat was reported growing five feet tall on some of the new warp lands. Yield‟s of six and half quarters (approximately 1 quarter =5 cwt) per acre were recorded which were tremendous yields for those days. The value of the land rose in spectacular manner. Land on Epworth South Moor valued at around £5.00 an acre was revalued at about £100.00 an acre after warping in the early 19 th century. Rents could be as high as £12.00 an acre in the 19th century.

Potatoes were a crop that produced a high return especially on warp lands. Many of the potatoes were taken by ship to Hull or even London. The ship returned with a load of horse or cow dung. This was liberally spread on the fields – about ten tons per acre. The chief potato varieties grown were „Up-to-Date‟, the „Reading Giant‟ and the „British Queen‟. On this best warp land potatoes and wheat could be grown in alternate years.

Crops on the second best warp had to be more varied – wheat, potatoes and another crop (barley, oats, flax or onions). On the third best warp crops were in a four-course rotation – wheat or oats, potatoes, clover or beans, and oats or wheat. On the other soils in the Isle similar crops were grown as on the third class warp.

On the sandy margins there was a greater variation including, in addition, onions, carrots and turnips.

Between 1880 and 1895 oats took over from wheat as the main cereal crop. Celery first appeared in the Isle in the 1890‟s liking especially peat soils and during the 20 th century Axholme celery has become nationally known. However, relatively little was grown then due to high labour requirements. Market gardening ventures started between 1780 and 1817. Mustard, carrots and cauliflowers were grown in addition to other crops.

The years following the drainage brought about changes in agriculture. Arable land and new crops replaced pasture on the commons. Villagers whose ancestors had once relied on wild fowling and fishing were now employed as ploughmen or labourers.

In 1906 Rider Haggard, the writer said, “ The Isle of Axholme is one of the few places in England which may be called truly prosperous”.

DIET IN THE EARLY 19th CENTURY Before the Enclosures, farmers had meat only once or twice. They lived chiefly on bread, butter, milk; eggs flour pudding and sometimes drinking malt liquor. This was a typical diet around 1800: Sunday Bacon, sometimes butcher‟s meat.

Monday Ash heap cake and butter in a hole in the middle, milk to drink with it.

Tuesday Pudding made with milk, wheat, flour and eggs.

Wednesday Bacon.

Thursday Ash heap cake and butter, milk to drink.

Saturday Pan pudding – a pudding made with flour with small bits of bacon in it.

Ode to Christmas I hope you have had a very good Christmas and that Father Christmas and your family and friends brought you a lot of happiness.

How well I remember the year when the much desired ―Post Office‖ was perfect. But sadly, on Christmas afternoon, it fell on to the floor and the door hinges snapped off. I spent the next hour writing an ―Ode‖ to the manufacturers in the hope they would replace the broken hinges. Before the 12 days of Christmas were over, the Post Office was back in business!

As the year draws to a close, it‘s a good time to look back and as we do so, I hope we can look to the really good times. Every now and then, it can feel like the hinges have snapped and our world falls apart. Thankfully our Manufacturer, or Creator God, is always there to replace those hinges – and He doesn‘t even need an Ode writing. He will be there too throughout 2012.

North Axholme School becomes The Axholme Academy North Axholme School will convert into an Academy on 1st January 2012.

Our new name will be The Axholme Academy. This signifies the outward looking nature of the Academy as we seek to build on the considerable successes of North Axholme. The conversion follows a long and thorough consultation process involving parents, students, staff, our partner primary schools, North Lincolnshire Council and our local councils. The Governing Body then decided that the conversion was the right thing to do for our students and our local community.

Academies are schools that receive their funding direct from government and are free from local authority control. We will be a second generation Academy and we have earned the right to convert because Ofsted judge us to be a good school that has the capacity to help other schools improve.

We will receive some additional funding direct to the academy that will enable us to be more flexible in what we spend our money on and rid us of a lot of bureaucracy.

Whilst becoming an Academy is an important move to make it will not alter the strengths that we have in terms of being a small school very much at the centre of our community with an excellent reputation for knowing our students well and caring for them very effectively. We will use the benefits of Academy status to further build on our excellent examination results that are already unrivalled in the locality.

We are proud of our new name and logo and excited as we enter a new phase in the development of this successful school. We will be consulting over the next few months to decide if we wish to change the school uniform to mark the change.

Photography Competition 2011 Our Summer Photography Competition is now in its 3rd year. We have four different categories each with a winner & runner-up prize. The categories are: Key Stage 3 students (Years 7, 8 & 9) Key Stage 4 students (Years 10 & 11) Staff Community This year we were lucky enough to have some local photography companies supporting the competition.

Tom Dennis Imaging, Laneham Street, Scunthorpe kindly donated 4 -20"x30" canvas prints (worth £80 each) for the winners & 4 –20"x16" prints (worth £40 each) for the runners-up.

Max Spielmann, High Street, Scunthorpe also supported us by donating 8 -10‖ x 8‖ canvasses which will be displayed in the Diner at school as a lasting reminder of the competition.
