The members of Crowle Methodist Church are very proud of their newly refurbished church.

After much planning and discussion they now have a good kitchen, a small meeting room and the main room which is a very usable space. Including the balcony this space can seat almost 300 people for concerts. The members use it for coffee mornings, conferences and concerts as well as for worship.

All areas, except the kitchen, are carpeted and warm with comfortable, moveable seating.

An enthusiastic group of ladies from the Epworth and District Flower Club met on a very cold, but bright Saturday morning at Doddington Hall to see the house decorated for Christmas. They were not disappointed. The Hall was not decorated in a traditional manner but each room contained arrangements made by different Flower Clubs throughout Lincolnshire with two arrangements by the Chairman and Vice Chairman of the regional NAFAS group. Dried flowers and foliage had been used in many of the arrangements with much material grown locally and some from the estate.

The ladies enjoyed lunch in the restaurant and a visit to the Bauble Barn. The February meeting will be held on 13th of the month in the Steven Jones Community Hall in Haxey at the usual time of 7.30p.m. Celia Jones 01427 874042

Runners from across the country and even beyond will be hitting the streets of Doncaster next May as the town will be hosting its first mass running event for many years. The Brooks Run Doncaster 10k takes place on Sunday 13 May and will see people taking part in a 10k which will start and finish at the famous Racecourse and taking in the Markets area, Town Centre and Town Fields.

The event promises to attract participants from across the UK and even runners from abroad. A Corporate Team Challenge will also feature in the event, with teams of 3 or more employees from the same firm competing to win the Corporate Shield.

Following the 10k event will be a Community Challenge Family Fun Run for children and families, with all finishers receiving a medal and certificate.

Julian Moorhouse of organisers, Metres to Miles said ―We are delighted to be working with the council to bring this event to Doncaster. The response has been tremendous since we opened entries last week. We had hundreds of people register in the first 36 hours, with entrants coming from London, Cumbria and even one entrant from the Isle of Man. It really is a great year to get the event off the ground, 2012 is a tremendous year for sport in UK and this event is for everyone‖.

Councillor Cynthia Ransome, Cabinet Member for Communities said: ―The event promises something for all, from the Family Fun Run to the more competitive races - each taking in some of the wonderful open spaces that we have in Doncaster.― The event has attracted sponsorship from global sports brand Brooks, and UK Marketing Manager Mike East was delighted to come on board as title sponsor for the event for the next two years ―We have been looking for a big event to sponsor in the North of England and Run Doncaster fits the bill exactly. The run appeals to the new jogger as well as the seasoned athlete and it‘s great that it is in a place as accessible as Doncaster‖.

Entry to the event is £18 for UKA Members and £20 for standard entry. Fun Run entries cost £8.

AXHOLME NORTH POLICE REPORT Recent Offences of Arson at Keadby and Ealand In November there have been arson attacks to a garden shed at Keadby (12/11/2011) and to three industrial units at Ealand (05/11/2011).

Update: The Humberside Fire and Rescue Service and Police attended at the scene of all of the fires and the respective investigation officers established that they were deliberate PCSO 7576 PCSO 7889 PC1717 arson attacks. Enquiries have been made but those responsible Paul Fearon Wendy Frear Graham Godley for starting the fires have not been identified. Anyone who has any information about the incidents are asked to contact the Police on the new 101 Non emergency telephone number or via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. The Humberside Fire and Rescue Service Community Safety Team are offering home fire safety checks on telephone number 0300 303 8242.

Potts Lane Car Park and St Oswald’s Church, Crowle Anti-social behaviour and vehicle nuisance in the car park and youths congregating and causing a nuisance to local residents at the church.

Update: Temporary CCTV has been installed at Potts Lane Car Park and has had an extremely positive impact on the calls for service. Latest figures show no calls for service relating to Potts Lane car park during December.

As a result of complaints over the previous months regarding youths in vehicles doing laps speeding around the town centre, North Lincolnshire Roads Safety Team installed electronic traffic monitoring equipment on Cross Street for a seven day period. The results showed an average of 642 vehicles per day using the road with an average speed of 21.4 mph along the 30mph speed limit road. There was only one call relating to the Church Street area in December and this related to an alarm sounding as result of an alarm fault. This success in dealing with the problems was discussed at the Neighbourhood Action Team meeting on 15/11/2011 and it was decided to downgrade it from the number one priority and to monitor the locations and any calls for service until February 2012 before a decision is made regarding removing the locations completely from the priority list.

Milienium Green Park, Edinburgh Road, Keady Criminal Damage and anti-social behaviour by three adult males in drink. This was a priority set at the Neighbourhood Action Team Meeting in August 2011. There had been a number of incidents of damage caused to the park equipment during the earlier part of the year and concerns had been raised abou three known males who visit the area often heavily under the influence of drink. It was discussed at the meeting about an application being made for the Safer Neighbourhoods Temporary CCTV which has proved to be a success in Crowle.

The Neighbourhood Policing Team frequently patrols the area and has in the past dealt with the three previously mentioned males.

Update:- There have been no calls for service during December relating to anti social-behaviour issues at the Millennium Green Playing Field at Keadby. The Police did attend a call relating to a vehicle being left on nearby Mill Road but no offences were revealed. With regards to the three males, it was reported that one male was now off the alcoho and there had been no further issues with any of them around the village.

Recent Issues :Theft of Motor Vehicles = Three Males from the South Yorkshire area have been arrested for theft of motor vehicles from the area. Criminal Damage = A seventeen old youth has been dealt as per the complainant‘s wishes regarding damage to an unattended car in Crowle. Harassment Warning = A male from Crowle has been issued with a written Harassment Warning regarding his conduct towards other residents. Police Bail re Drugs Offences = A female from Crowle is still on Police bail whilst enquiries are ongoing with regards drugs related offences at Crowle. A male is on Police bail with regards to cannabis plants being found growing in premises at Keadby. Another local male is on police bail for the possession of drugs which have been sent to the Forensic Science laboratory for analysis. Respect Seminar = A youth is to appear before the Respect Seminar after admitting an offence of theft.

Assault and Criminal Damage = A man from Crowle has appeared at North Lincolnshire Magistrates Court Scunthorpe for two offences of assault and one of criminal damage. Harassment Warnings = A male and a female from Crowle have been given written Harassment warnings regarding their conduct towards others in unrelated incidents.

Police Surgery on the 5th March 2012 where the Local Neighbourhood Team will be conducting a walkabout on Station Road area of Keadby to encourage community engagement.

Gents Victorious in Battles Competition With the Ladies.

Axholme Camera Club welcomed in the New Year with its first Photo print competition. This was in deed a true competition in every sense of the word, we could even describe it as a Battle of the Sexes, it was Ladies verses the Gents. The subject was OPEN as not to put any limits that may give advantage to one side or the other. Therefore, the members brought a wide and varied choice of titles. There was photographs from Bondi Beach and Bali to portraits of family and pets, and birds of many colours to monochrome images illustrating the workings of the piano.

After the judgement decisions were complete the Judge, Mr Ian Pinn, expressed his thoughts relating to the the quality of the photography, stating that entries were of a high standard and he had enjoyed the chance to judge the competition.

Ian was a little late arriving due to the weather with very high winds on the motorway which slowed down the traffic extending the journey from Nottingham. Nevertheless, Ian began judging with very little time to review the images. He made the comment that we had more members attending than Nottingham the night before. Ian's style and experience has a Judge began to show through from the start when he gave good critical and positive advice on how to improve each image.

There was a total of 76 entries, 56 coloured and 28 Mono or Black and White images. However, these were separated into the Ladies and Gents, were the Ladies had 13 colour and 7 mono to the Gents 35 colour and 21 mono.

Once the judging had been completed it was left to Geoff Trinder the Chairman to keep the proceedings moving until the scores had been ratified by Dave Neale one of the Competition Secretaries. The scores are average by the number of members in each section to ensure fair play due to the unbalanced number of female entries. After great deliberation it was announced that the Gents had won by a very narrow margin. Final score was Gents 15.71, Ladies 15.65 this was followed by howls and shouts such as ―Wait till next year‖. It was all in good fun and the night ended with members wishing each other a happy new year. This is the third year that Axholme Camera Club have run the Ladies Verses the Gents competition. To date the Gents are leading 2 to 1.

The number of high scoring images demonstrates the standard of the photography that the members are producing today is of a high-level.

TRANSPORT IN THE EARLY 19th CENTURY Before Vermuyden’s drainage, the transport between villages could be quite easily carried out by boat, One could row from Wroot right across to the eastern part of the Isle. In the 17 th, 18th and early 19th centuries communications with Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire were worse than before any attempt at drainage.

Such roads as there were in the Isle ran north/south and these were impassable in winter even on horseback. Attempts were made to lay causeways of flagstones wide enough for a horse to walk on. During the years 1810, 1811 and 1812 when agricultural prices were high, the causeways were completed from village to village. However, these were soon in a bad state and the custom of the country became that a pedestrian should give way to a horse for fear of the horse, carrying a load, being turned off the causeway into the mud. Macadam’s improvements percolated through to the Isle and by 1838 good and durable roads had been made. A person could walk from Owston Ferry to Haxey, Epworth, Belton, Crowle and Luddington. After the roads had been made one horse and cart could pull as heavy a load as had taken four horses on the previous tracks. Even in the 1850’s flagstone roads were still in evidence in some parts of the Isle.

Steam navigation of the Trent provided communication to Hull. The first steam packet boat ran between Gainsborough and Hull calling at Axholme ports on the Trent bank. The S.S. ‘Caledonia’ supplied the first service in 1815. The service was discontinued during the 1914-18 war.

EPWORTH MARKETS AND FAIRS IN THE 19th CENTURY The Market Place and Market Cross are all that remains of a weekly market in Epworth dating back to the times of Richard11. Market day was Thursday and on sale were a great range of farm produce varying from corn, sack cloth to butter etc. During the Napoleonic Wars, corn prices were high and the market was very busy. By the 1850’s the market was in decline due to the ability to move produce to larger towns. Road transport provided communication with Hull. By 1900 the market was almost disused and it was discontinued a few years later.

The two annual fairs date back also to Richard11.

They were held annually on the first Thursday after the 1st May and the first Thursday after the 29th September. At these fairs were held great shows of oxen, horses and sheep. The fairs still remained in the form of children’s amusements fairs in the 1970’s.

Isle Group of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust Geoff Trinder will be giving an illustrated talk on reptiles from around the world at our February meeting which will take place on Thursday February 2nd at 7.30pm. Geoff is a well known photographer and speaker and this is a fascinating subject, so do come along and find out more about them. The meetings are always open to everyone.

Our monthly work party will be on Sunday February 5th. This month we will be working on Rush Furlong, a small meadow on the outskirts of Haxey. One of the things we will be doing is hedge laying so if you would like to come along and help and learn how this is done you would be very welcome. We will meet at the reserve at 10am and finish about midday. All you need is enthusiasm, working clothes and gloves, and possibly a flask and snack.

Our March meeting will be held on Thursday March 1st at 7.30pm. This month we have Geoff Lee telling us all about native British trees.

There is a wide variety of these so if you want to find out how to identify them by looking at the bark, leaves or seeds and you want to know more about the wildlife they support, then come and join us in Haxey.

All our indoor meetings are held in the Stephen Jones Hall at the rear of the Methodist Chapel, Low Street, Haxey on the first Thursday of the month at 7.30pm and everyone is welcome, you don‘t have to be a member. February – The Month of LOVE! Last week, my wife received a catalogue of ―Gifts for Valentine‘s Day‖. We have celebrated 14 th February since we first fell in love. Traditionally, a Valentine card is never signed. That‘s not a problem as we generally receive only one card each. Needless to say, we tell each other at least once a day how much we love each other. Valentine‘s Day adds to that once a year.

The other day of love in February is Ash Wednesday (22 nd February). It is the day after Shrove Tuesday or Pancake Day and marks the beginning of Lent. Lent is the 6½ weeks before Easter Day and is traditionally a time of ‗giving up things‘ or ‗denying ourselves‘ the good things in life.

Giving up sweets, chocolate or crisps for 6½ weeks is nothing compared to dying on a cross. Ash Wednesday becomes a day of love when we give things up out of love for Jesus who gave His life for us.

School’s out and academy status is in!

The conversion of North Axholme School into The Axholme Academy took place as planned on 1 st January without any of the hiccups that have occurred elsewhere. The Academy will now benefit from greater independence and freedoms as it will be free of local authority control. The new name and logo is already proudly on show around the school to the delight of students.

Head Boy, George Mason, said ‗We were told that the school had applied to become an academy last October and found out recently that it has definitely gone ahead. It is good news because as an academy there is more freedom for the school to pursue its own ideas‘.

Principal, Joe Sellars, said ‗We‘re really pleased to become an academy and the staff and students are really proud of the achievement. Our good Ofsted rating had a definite impact because their judgement is very important when you apply to convert‘. Because academies are directly funded by the government, it means that our funding comes direct from the government rather than through the local authority. This means that we have the ability to make exactly the right decisions for the students that attend this academy. ‗ Head Girl, Poppy Robinson, said ‗Becoming an academy is really exciting because it has brought a lot more opportunities to everyone studying here. There is more funding for things and the word ‗academy‘ has a certain ring to it. I think students feel proud to attend an academy, and it feels quite prestigious‘.

In the longer term, being an academy will enable us to tailor our curriculum to suit the needs of our students because we will not have to teach the national curriculum. Obviously the core subjects will always be taught but at least we will be able to consider introducing some options that will, for example, really stretch our most able students. There is a consultation process going on at the moment about possible changes to the school uniform. Students have already been surveyed and parents will be next. We will listen to all views before governors make a decision and we will be very conscious that any change will need to be cost effective for parents.

One Friday, just before Christmas, Althorpe and Keadby Primary School invited some of their friends in the local community to join a group of staff and children for Christmas lunch in the Year 6 classroom.

As they settled down to a delicious lunch, prepared by their wonderful School Cook (Angie Walker) and her talented team; the staff and children chatted to their guests about school life and what they were looking forward to receiving from Father Christmas.

Time flew by and soon the guests found themselves sitting (with very full tummies!) listening to the girls from Year 6, who entertained them with Christmas songs and poems.

Everyone said they‘d had a wonderful time and they‘d like to repeat the experience one day very soon.
