Editors Letter....

I must say I am looking forward to the Spring, I've heard so much bad news over the last month, I am looking forward to longer days and hopefully some sunshine.

My heart goes out to all the friends and family of Joan Biddle who died early January. She was the heart and inspiration of Belton in the Park. I only met Joan a couple of times, and found her to be a lovely kind lady, who made me very welcome. This years Concert in the Park in Belton will be the last one and will be a tribute to Joan, lets hope as many people can attend as possible.

Thank you for all the articles sent in this month; don't forget if anyone is planning a Summer Fair, a fund raiser or even just a good news story, please send me them and let everyone know in your local area. The Christmas Craft fair was a great success thanks to the support of local, and some not so local, people.

Everyone enjoyed the relaxed and friendly atmosphere. there was an exciting display of a large variety of unique, handmade items for sale on the 20 stalls and children enjoyed the opportunity to paint Christmas decorations.

There were several charities supported by the Craft Fair and stall holders. Money raised includes £158 for Cancer Research UK, £50 for Alzheimer's Society, £105 for Leeds Children's Hospital Appeal and £105 for Children's Liver Disease Foundation.

Parents’/Carers’ Safeguarding Evening at North Axholme School During recent years, safeguarding in schools has become increasingly high profile. In response to this, there have been a number of national and local guidance documents published which have led to the development of a school safeguarding policy (available on www.northax.net).

Part of the schools strategy for tackling safeguarding issues involves raising the awareness of ‗risky behaviours‘ with parents, carers and other family members within our local community. To this end, a second annual safeguarding evening is taking place at school between 6.20pm and 9.00pm on Wednesday 9th March 2011.

The purpose of this meeting is to raise the awareness of current issues surrounding E-Safety, Sexual Health and Drugs and Alcohol Misuse, particularly in relation to secondary aged children.

During the evening, attendees will visit three 40 minute workshops delivered by specialists from within the local authority.

A friendly outgoing bunch of women meet in the committee room at the Hub in Crowle on the first Thursday of every month at 7.30pm.

The members of the group are theatre going, wine loving, supportive and welcoming.

OK so most of us are over sixty but, although we have been round the block at least once, that doesn‘t mean that we can‘t enjoy life, laugh with the best and care for the community.

The Neighbourhood Priorities for this area are as follows:Crowle Town Centre – Anti-social Behaviour and Vehicle Nuisance.

The heavy snowfall during December led to more calls for service due to youths creating problems throwing snow balls at pedestrians, property and vehicles in all villages on the Isle but also around PC1717 Crowle town centre. Several youths have been Graham Godley spoken to and advised regarding the possible consequences of their actions. Two males have been interviewed regarding assault and enquiries are ongoing.

Trentside and Chapel Lane Keadby – Suspicious incidents and damage.

UPDATE – Partnership work has been accomplished with the fire service and owner of certain properties.

They are now in a safe and secure state. The police have not received any further calls for service; the Neighbourhood team will continue to monitor the area and will deal appropriately. This priority is now closed pending any further new information.

Priority Three = Keadby – area surrounding and including the park on Mill Road.

Description of the priority: Recent reports have been received regarding anti-social behaviour and a criminal damage by fire in the area. There are some outstanding enquiries into possible offenders for some of these occurrences which will be investigated. The incidents are occurring of an evening during the hours of darkness.

The Neighbourhood team will patrol the area and make hi-visibility presence. Partnership work has also been instigated and there have been several media releases to encourage people to make reports of instances and also to name any offenders seen or involved with this.

Several youths from the village have been spoken regarding the arson to a bench on the park at Mill Road but there is insufficient evidence to progress the enquiry further.

A male has been arrested following a break-in at a local pub in the Althorpe area and is currently going through the judicial system. One driver has been stopped in the Crowle Town Centre area and a quantity of cannabis was discovered in the vehicle and they have been reported for summons for possession of the Class B Drug. A male from Crowle has been arrested for the offence of harassment and is currently on Police bail whilst enquiries are ongoing. A male is currently on bail to North Lincolnshire Magistrates Court regarding an offence of assault at Keadby. Several youths have been spoken to in Keadby regarding the arson to the park bench on Mill Lane but there is insufficient evidence to progress the matter further.

A male from Keadby has been given a warning regarding the possession of cannabis following a search of his address and an amount of the Class B drug was found. A male from Crowle is currently on bail to North Lincolnshire Magistrates Court regarding the offences of possession of cannabis, production of CROFT HOUSE cannabis with intent to supply and possession of an KENNEL & CATTERY electric stun gun which is a prohibited weapon. A Heated Kennels & Cattery female has also received a police caution for posses- • sion of the same weapon.

ALEXANDER KILHAM

The ideas of John Wesley were taken and developed by many of his followers.

One such man was Alexander Kilham who was born in Epworth on July 10th 1762 the son of a linen weaver. Alexander took up the ideas of Wesley and became a local preacher, preaching his first sermon at Luddington. He preached around Gainsborough, and later in Pocklington, Whitby, and Newcastle and in 1793 in Aberdeen. He was impressed by the Presbyterian system with its ideas of ministerial and lay government of the church. In 1795 he published a pamphlet called the ‘Progress of Liberty” which attacked ministerial power and demanded the right of the people to share in legislation and government. He also believed in the independence of each individual church or chapel” complete within itself for government, but within a framework of churches being associated for mutual help”. All Methodists did not share his views and the Wesleyan Conference of 1796 expelled him from their ranks. A year later he helped to found the Methodist New Connexion that flourished and continued until reunited with the Wesleyan Methodist Church within the last eighty years in 1932. The new Connexion was organised similarly to the Methodist Church of today with Leader’s Meetings in local churches to organise locally, Quarterly Meetings, District Synod Meetings, Annual Conferences with equal lay and ministerial representation and an Annual Committee to act from Conference to Conference.

Most of Kilham’s ideas have been since adopted by the Methodist Church. He died at the age of 36 years having worked himself to death and was buried at Nottingham. The Kilham memorial Chapel in Epworth was opened on July 25th 1860. It was closed due to unification with the Wesleyan Methodists. The building is now used a Youth Centre.

Members of the new Connexion increased steadily from the time of the first conference in 1797 through the 19th century. Here are some figures related to New Connexion membership: 1797 – 5037, 1802 – 5070, 1812 – 8677, 1822 – 10856, 1832 – 12621, 1840 – 21836, 1847 – 19462, 1872 – 30972.

There were also 78670 Sunday School Scholars.

Isle Group of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust Trekking in Peru and the Inca Trail Our February meeting will be on Thursday February 3rd when we will have Barbara Spencer talking to us about her time spent trekking in Peru, including the Inca Trail. Peru is a country in the spectacular Andes mountains with wonderful scenery and its own unique culture. Walking the Inca Trail through the mountains takes visitors to the spectacular ancient ruins of Machu Picchu which are said to be at their best at sunrise. Hearing peoples personal accounts of experiences like this are always fascinating so do come along and hear them for yourself.

Advance notice of the meeting on March 3rd Mary Porter will be giving us an illustrated talk on Wildlife Gardening on Thursday March 3 rd. She will be giving us lots of tips and ideas on how to attract wildlife into your garden. This should be valuable information just before the spring gardening season begins.

We meet on the first Thursday of the month from October to May at the new hall at the rear of Haxey Methodist Chapel on Low Street starting at 7.30pm. There is a small admission charge of ÂŁ1 and there is a raffle and refreshments. Bird food is always on sale at the meetings as well as at Geoff‘s house in Belton.

Photography Competition 2010 As part of our Specialist School Status the school held its second annual photography competition that was open to all students, staff & the local community. The theme of the competition was ‗Summer Holiday‘. Mr Creasy, Assistant Headteacher said that ―the competition encourages staff, students, parents and members of the wider community to take photographs during the summer holiday. It is great to be able to recognise and celebrate the photographic talents of such a wide range of people, particularly from different age groups within our school, our feeder schools and the local community.

I have been really impressed by the quality of entries that we have had during the past two years, and look forward to seeing what photographs are entered when we run the competition again during this summer‖.

Who will be my new Boss?

At the end of January, the Rt Rev Dr John Saxbee, the Bishop of Lincoln will retire. I will remember him for many things: his phenomenal ability to remember names and faces; his acts of heroism including flying with the Red Arrows; his common sense in blessing the snowploughs every year; above all, his ability to proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ. As he puts it, ―God loves you as you are – and loves you too much to leave you that way.‖ We wish him and his wife Jackie every happiness in their retirement. Bishop John intends to learn to cook!

We await the nomination of a new Bishop sometime in the summer. We are praying for a man who will love God and love the people of this Diocese.

North Axholme Allotment Society was formed on a wet November night in 2009 in the Godnow Road sport pavilion.

Eric Dinsdale our chairman is developing a web site giving full account o0f the formation and early days of the society. The website should be up and running in the next few week...

From the first day the gates were opened, the allotments have been a hive of activity. Obviously some people have maintained their initial enthusiasm, some have pulled out, and there others who need to check their intentions!

One thing beyond our control over the last year has been the weather. The way our allotments have been covered in show and ice; it is hard to remember the problem we had in the Summer with the lack of water.

We raised our profile within the village by putting on an Open Day and a Produce Day. Both were well supported and raised funds for the society.

In 2011 we will stage these events again! The Open Day is planned for 20th August and the Produce Day approx the 3rd September. We also intend taking part in the Crowle Show in June and the Carnival in July.
