Due to circumstances outside of our control, this year’s Peter Pan Concert that was to be held at Doncaster Race Course has been cancelled.

Therefore, there will be no draw for the competition advertised in the November issues of The Arrow. Arrow Publications apologises for any inconvenience this may have caused in entering this competition.

Again the Isle of Axholme Lions are on tour!

Raising money for great charities in the Isle, keep an eye open for Father Christmas near you! Also The dancing lights of Brigley House in Saffron Way, Crowle will light up the dark evenings once again this December and this year it’s bigger, brighter and bolder than ever before! With over 8000 lights, this years show has a selection of new songs and old favourites and its all shining bright to raise funds for The Lindsey Lodge Hospice. For more details both events are on pages 22 and 23.

This lovely boy is Alfie, an 8 month old Jack Russell Cross. Alfie is a very happy, playful boy, who loves fuss and attention, and loves to play. He is still very much a puppy, and will need some training, although the basics are there. He is ok with kids and other dogs, but not cats.

Community News The Old Rectory To Host Christmas Craft Fair An early taste of the festive season will be taking place at Epworth’s Old Rectory on Saturday 6th December 10 til 3pm when the historic Grade 1 listed building will be playing host to a Christmas Craft Fair. Admission is £1 for an adult and children under the age of 12 get in for free.

There will be numerous stalls selling a variety of goods, including toys and seasonal gifts, handmade jewellery, silk flower arrangements and local honey.

Other attractions include a chocolate-only tombola, light refreshments and children’s entertainment.

The Old Rectory is famous throughout the world as the childhood home of John and Charles Wesley, who founded a movement that went on to become the international Methodist Church.

The event is part of an ongoing campaign to raise money in order to restore the Old Rectory - an accredited museum and a registered charity – to how it would have looked when occupied by the Wesley family in the early 18th century.

A fashion show with a difference will be held at Crowle Community Hall on Thursday 4th December (7pm) with proceeds in aid of the Scunthorpe Hospital Stroke Unit and Lindsey Lodge Hospital.

Local models will be showing off a range of styles from all the seasons to suit all ages at The Fashion Show & Sale Company event and everyone is welcome with no obligation to buy.

Designer High Street store and top range catalogue ladies garments will be on offer at “a fraction of the normal price” with all items fully guaranteed.

Admission is £3 including Festive refreshments.

There are short health walks running every 2 weeks from Belton playing fields Jeffrey lane car park 10.30. These are part of the national walking for health scheme designed to encourage those who would benefit from walking to become more active in a safe environment. Each walk is attended by at least two trained volunteers.

Dates are 3rd 17th 31st December, 14th 28th January and so on! Distance approx. 1-1.5 miles no longer than 30 minutes as these walks are purely for people who need to build up strength health and confidence prior to joining the schemes longer walks. Trained volunteer walk leaders on hand and the walks are very relaxed and friendly.

On the 3rd Sunday of every month Social Knitwork meet at Axholme Licensed Tea Rooms, High Street, Crowle. Come along for a chat whilst working on current knitting or crochet projects. There is no charge so come along. A pot of tea is provided.

Carols Around the Tree in Eastoft Village 7pm 17th December 2014. The evening is led by Rev Ken Sargeantson with local musicians and keyboards leading the carols around the lighted Christmas tree for all to sing. Eastoft C of E school children are taking part in this event.

Refreshments in the village hall, coffee, tea, mince pies and sausage rolls. Everyone is welcome to share the Christmas season with the Parish Council.

Dillon, the donkey, is all set to make another guest appearance at Crowle Methodist Church this Christmas and youngsters from the area are invited to come along to see a real live donkey inside the historic Chapel.

The 17 year old pet of Mrs Susan Owen from Haxey proved a star attraction at last year’s annual Carol Service helping to pack the 110 year old building with parents and children, all eager to catch a glimpse of the well-behaved donkey.

Dillon will be appearing at the Fieldside Chapel service starting at 2.30pm Sunday 21st December.

Crowle Minister, Rev Duncan McBean says: “Local families are invited to join us in an afternoon of fun, festivity and faith.

“Dillon was on his best behaviour last year and the Carol Service proved a huge success.

“Everyone is most welcome to come along and enjoy this one-off event. Hopefully it will also help to spread the real meaning behind Christmas.”

Complimentary refreshments including mince pies will be served afterwards.

A donation of £50 from last year’s collection was sent to The Donkey Sanctuary Charity in Devon to help less fortunate animals.

As this article is being written, the phone line at Isle Rescue is very busy. Every day we take calls from people begging us to take in their dogs and cats and find new homes for them.

This happens throughout the year, but the few weeks running up to and including the Christmas period are by far the worst. Some people obviously decide that they want a cute puppy or kitten for Christmas, and the loyal pet they have had for many years must go to make room.

Then a few weeks later, they realise that the cute puppy has grown, needs a lot of attention and training, makes a mess and barks, so sadly it has to go as well.

Of course there are genuine reasons why someone may have to give up their beloved pet, and it is heartbreaking. But there are many who are happy to dump their pets out in the street, leave them behind in the garden when they move house, or give them away “Free to a Good Home� on the selling sites, without a second thought as to where they will end up. And yes, without going into the scary details, many of these do end up in the wrong hands. Rescues such as ourselves help as many as we can, but it is a drop in the ocean. There are thousands of dogs in Rescues and Council Pounds throughout the country- many of whom will never be re-homed. A large percentage of these were once family pets.

Please be careful what you wish for this Christmas. Pets really are a big commitment, so make sure you are willing- and able- to give them the lovely, lifetime home they all deserve.

Wear it Pink Day The Axholme Academy looked good and did good by going pink for the day on Friday October 24th in order to mark the 13th year of Wear it Pink and contribute to the ÂŁ2 million that is raised annually for breast cancer research. Staff at the Academy wore as much pink as possible and made and sold pink cakes and held an enormous pink raffle, whilst students swapped one item of uniform for something pink and donated cash.

The total raised was over ÂŁ150. Staff are planning to boost their contribution to breast cancer research later in the academic year by doing something Pretty Muddy.......

Study Skills Day A Study Skills day took part on Tuesday 21st October in the school hall. All Year 11 students and some Year 10 students learned new skills on improving memory and revision techniques. Students described the presenter as nuts and crazy and the buzz she created motivated the students. The students still remember about the mind map she created to remember the life of Mohammed Ali and the shopping list that consisted of 10 things. The afternoon session was about motivation and students were guided to set long-term and short-term goals. The feedback from students was very positive and this will be followed up with additional sessions in tutorial and CS.

ENGLISH NEWS Fantasy Writing Workshop A small number of students from year 8 were able to work with published author Mikka Haugaard in a writing workshop. The students spent the day generating ideas, and writing their very own fantasy story.

All the students found the day very engaging. The stories the students created will be printed in a collection of short stories and presented to them as a keepsake.

Sci-fi Week In a week dedicated to all things sci-fi, students at The Axholme Academy engaged in a diverse range of activities across the curriculum: Year 9 students went to Vue Cinema to see a private showing of 'Enders Game'; All students learnt about dystopias in their English lessons, and even wrote their own; Sci-fi novels such as 'The Hunger Games', 'Mazerunner', and 'Divergent' were promoted through the lending library; An after school film club provided students with the opportunity to watch the film 'Divergent'; Other subjects incorporated a sci-fi theme to their lessons as well.

Change your driving habits with the change of season Dear Readers, As autumn brings a change in the colour of leaves, motorists also need to be aware of the hazards brought about by changing road conditions..

Fallen leaves tend to accumulate near roadside gutters and, when combined with heavier seasonal rainfall, can block roadside drains causing localised deep water and wet leaves on the road surface increase the danger of skidding for drivers and motorcyclists.

Darker mornings and early evenings also mean that it is harder to spot surface water. If the road surface is black, pockets of water are less easy to see and can cause a sharp, unexpected jolt on the steering wheel when hit.

The sun is also lower in the sky at sunrise and sunset at this time of year and motorists should be aware this can have a dangerous blinding effect, particularly around the time motorists are commuting to and from work.

The colder temperatures of autumn can also to give rise to fog. Fog is a particular problem on fast-moving roads, such as motorways but severely reduced visibility brings danger for drivers on all roads – particularly junctions and roundabouts.

Use fog lights sparingly; switch them on only when visibility is below 100 metres. Leaving them on after fog has disappeared is an offence and a danger to other motorists.

Fog can also cause moisture on the windscreen; use wipers to clear the exterior and keep the interior clean to help maintain visibility.

Motorists should set lighting and windscreen controls in their vehicle before setting off to avoid distraction while travelling.

Sharp braking can also be even more dangerous when visibility is poor. Motorists should be prepared to slow down to enable them to stop within the distance they can see to be clear and give following drivers more time react.
