Community News BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT GROUP

For those who've experienced loss of any kind there's an informal gathering in the Guildroom at Wesley Memorial Methodist Church on the 4th Thursday of each month, i.e. 26th March, 23rd April etc, between 2-3pm. This year’s Epworth Music Day falls on Saturday 20 June and we are starting to put the plan together to make it as much as success as it was last year. ANOTHER AMERICAN SOCIAL DANCE Following the success of the lively American-style social dance held at Crowle Pavilion in February, Mrs Porter and The Polka Dots will host a second event - this time in the Ealand Victory Hall on Sunday April 5th.

Most of the dances will be community favourites such as the Virginia Reel which can be enjoyed by everyone, even complete beginners.

And for those who enjoy a little more challenge, Janet will include a short workshop on American Contra Dances including some simple moves.

The Polka Dots Barn Dance Band, whose original line-up played for the Eastoft Millennium Street Party, will include: Jonathan Bynoe on clarinet, Nigel Swan on keyboard or guitar, Joy Crampton on concertina and Janet Porter, dance caller, clarinet and recorder.

Janet, from Eastoft, said: “If you enjoy country dancing, barn dancing or ceilidhs, you’ll love American Contra Dancing. These dance styles have great similarities and all involve friendly social dancing, usually in set formation, and are lively, not too difficult and great fun.

“If you are not able to dance for any reason please still come along to this event. There will be no pressure to dance and you can sit and chat in a friendly atmosphere, enjoy the music, watch the dancers and have a cuppa!”

The dancing is aimed at adults or young people aged 11yrs or over who may have some experience of country dancing or just be very keen to learn and have fun. The event starts at 2.30pm (doors 2.15) and finishes 5.15. Entry is £3 including tea and biscuits. Phone or text Janet on 07939 032224 to reserve a place, or just pay on the door.

The Polka Dots perform regularly around Yorkshire and Lincolnshire - including the popular Epworth Music Day which is on Saturday June 20 2020 Janet and Nigel also run a popular French traditional music session at the Garden Gate pub in Leeds and with Jonathan as Les Rustiques are playing as part of the City of York Folk Weekend June 5th to 7th at the Black Swan.

Isle Group of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust Thursday April 2nd 2020 – 7.30pm Far Ings National Nature Reserve Far Ings National Nature Reserve is situated on the Humber Bank near to the Humber Bridge and is a major reserve for the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust. As well as a visitor’s centre it has a variety of habitats from lakes to reedbeds to grassland and a variety of wildlife. The speciality is the bittern, a rare bird in the country, Simon Wellock is the manager of Far Ings and several other smaller reserves along the Humber Bank and he will be talking about the work done on the reserves and the things you might see when you visit them. Do come along and find out more about this area which is on our doorstep. It will be preceded by a very short AGM. Everyone is welcome, you don't have to be a member of the Wildlife Trust.

Entrance fee is £1 and there is a raffle and refreshments. Our meetings are always on the first Thursday of the month at 7.30pm from October to May in the Stephen Jones Hall in Haxey. Protect your vehicle Your car - a safe place – with your own home comforts and mod cons - but opportunistic criminals often see them as easy pickings You can take some measures to makes your car less likely to be targeted by thieves

Car security -Don’t make it easy for thieves. Make sure you lock your car doors and windows every time you leave it.

-Never leave the keys in the ignition: eg when paying for petrol or warming your car on an icy day.

-Secure your car registration documents at home, nerve leave them in your car.

-Think about where you’re parking. Use a well-lit, secure car park.

-Don’t leave anything on show – CDs, cheque books, even an old coat on show inside as they may be tempting for thieves.

-With satnavs in particular, make sure you remove the device from view including its cradle.

-Consider investing and using an alarm as a deterrent.

Parking your car - at home & away -Making sensible parking choices is a great way to improve the security of your vehicle: -The most secure location is in your locked and alarmed garage, while the next best thing is to park as close to your home as possible – whether that be on a drive or on the street directly outside your property.

-A well-lit drive where another vehicle is present also makes a great deterrent to put off any would-be thieves.

-Hide car keys in the house when you go to bed - never hang them near the door or leave them on a hall table -Avoid locations where your vehicle will be hidden from general view, like behind hedges or walls.

-Busy, overlooked or CCTV-monitored parking areas are far safer than deserted side streets or back alleys.

-When leaving your vehicle parked, consider that although it might be light now think about night time lighting and how remote the location may become.

-Some of the safest public car parks are those displaying the Park Mark Safer Parking Tick. To find an approved car park in your area, visit www.parkmark.co.uk.

Van Security The potential for small vans to contain tools and petty cash can sometimes make them very appealing to criminals. There are many ways you can protect your vehicle and make it less desirable to thieves.

-Keep doors locked, windows closed and alarms active at all times.

-Never leave valuables or tools on display, and don’t carry satnavs, trade spares or other unnecessary items if they are not being used.

-Tools and stock items should always be removed from the van overnight – displaying signage to say 'No Tools Left in Vehicle' -Satnavs should be removed along with their cradle -Leave roof bars and external load boxes or tubes empty and unlocked to prevent forced entry.

-If possible, park your van so the rear and side doors are tight to walls, garage doors or other vehicles to hinder direct access and any physical attacks.

Fabulous Flags for a Fabulous Isle Written By Danny Dawson Mrs Childs was recently approached by Councillor John Briggs to design a new flag for the Isle of Axholme. A prize will be given to the winning design which will become the official flag for the Isle.

Students in Year 7, 8 and 9 have been told in Art to design their flags with a certain criteria. It must make reference to the number seven, as this is the number of parishes within The Isle of Axholme.

Students began by decoding various flags of the world and learning about the symbolism within them. It must not show any numbers or letters, as flags are designed to be accessible to every language as they are a visual symbol. It must also not show any trademarks or brands due to copyright laws. Despite these restrictions, students have created unique, interesting and amazing flag designs.

I asked some of the team what they did for their designs. Megan replied, “For my flag, I represented the seven Parishes by including seven chains in a link. To represent the agriculture, I drew a Fleur De Lys (which represents agriculture) in the centre of the flag.”

Tobi said, “I drew seven sheaves of barley and seven branches coming off a tree, with a star coming off each end. To represent religion, I drew a cross; to represent the area of North Lincolnshire, I drew the Fleur De Lys in one of my four corners of my flag. To represent wealth in agriculture, I drew a shining diamond and, as mentioned before, the seven sheaves of barley.”

A firm favourite was the flag of Nepal with its unique shape. I also asked Mrs Childs about the flag competition. She responded, “The previous flag has been representing the Isle of Axholme for about 35 years, and they felt it was time for a change. I enjoyed seeing the diversity of the ideas the students came up with and what they personally felt was important to the Isle.”

Cllrs Briggs and Reed visited the academy at the end of January and together with Mr Keogh shortlisted the flags. A meeting will take place with Cllrs Mitchell and Robinson (Axholme Central) and Cllrs Allcock and Rose (Axholme South) to view the shortlisted flags and the selection will be made for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd winners of the flag competition.

Haxey Amateur Dramatic Society is in the last couple of weeks of rehearsals for their next production “Fairway to Heaven” by Diana Raffle.

Lady Fotheringham is trying to throw a party for her rather elderly friends in her country house. Cheryl (her daughter) and Trevor Slater-Rees (Cheryl’s husband) both have important business to conduct at the same time. Trevor's marriage is in a mess and so is his job. If he doesn't sell one big property before the end of the month, he'll face the sack. However, thanks to his friend, Bob, things are looking up. They have managed to get invited to a party that could just provide Trevor with a buyer.

Unfortunately, before leaving, an accident occurs. Desperate to cover their tracks Trevor and Bob lurch from dilemma to disaster and dead bodies start piling up. With an intellectually challenged gardener's daughter, several ‘interesting’ costume changes and Bob’s Mediterranean wife Jeremy Cooper Hayley Brook John Spittlehouse Maria's fiery temperament added into Maureen Leggott. the mix, the chaos continues. This fast-paced farcical comedy promises silly twists and turns… with innuendo a-plenty.

The show runs from Thursday 2nd April to Saturday 4th at 7.30 in Haxey Memorial Hall. Tickets at £5.00 are available from Greenhill Store, Haxey.

Do you recognise this quilt?

Do you recognise this quilt being held by Gillian Crawley, manager of Epworth Old Rectory? The quilt was recently re-discovered in a storage cupboard in the Rectory which was being cleared out. The housekeeper, Sandra Tutty said she could not remember seeing it out on a bed or anywhere else in all the time she had worked at the Rectory, a total of 37 years.

Gillian, who is a museum specialist believes the quilt to be very old. It has suffered some damage, probably from exposure to bright light and usage but is still a very attractive item. There appears to be no record of where the quilt came from, or from whom, nor who may have made it.

On examination, it is meticulously hand stitched and quilted with some quite different fabric designs. A museum textiles specialist may be able to give more information regarding its age, the fabrics used as well as the patterns, and what work would probably be needed to make it safe to display at some time in the future.

What that specialist would not be able to tell us is where it came from and how it came to be at the Rectory. If you recognise the quilt from any period in it's life and have any information as to its provenance, please do get in touch with Gillian at the Rectory.

999 Rescue Day Preparations In Full Swing The team behind “Rescue Day”, the annual 999 day at Crowle, North Lincs, are already working hard to plan and prepare for this summer’s event. Rescue Day 2020 will be held on Saturday 11th July at 7 Lakes Country Park near Scunthorpe.

The hugely popular day promotes the great work of our emergency and voluntary services and attracts crowds in the thousands each year. 999 vehicles and crews including Police, fire, ambulance, water rescue, air ambulance, search and rescue, rail and highways rescue and recovery teams, and many more, all converge on North Lincolnshire to show the public what they do through a series of live action displays.

Keen to interact with the public, the rescue teams display their specialist vehicles and equipment and also promote water, road, rail and fire safety advice. There’s always lots to see and do for all the family, with a fairground, boat and pony rides, lots of stalls and attractions, plus a range of food and drink stands.

The Red Devils Parachute Display team will again be making a splash when they land into the main lake and subject to operational requirements the air ambulance helicopter will be arriving at 7 Lakes for visitors to see up close and talk to the pilot and crew.

Rescue Day raises money for charities and good causes and has funded many lifesaving public defibrillators which have been placed in local communities over recent years. Last year donations were also presented to Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance, the Scunthorpe Sea Cadets, plus volunteer rescue teams including York Rescue Boat, Humber Rescue and International Rescue Corps. Donations were also given to the popular Pete Lewin Newfoundland rescue and support dogs organisation and to the volunteer animal rescuers from British Divers Marine Life Rescue.

Rescue Day gates will be open from 9.30am to 5.00pm and advanced tickets will be available online at www.rescueday999.com from May onwards.
