The Bramblebank Wood Project is coming to an end and we have set a date for our Open Day including a ribbon cutting and lots of special guests including representatives of all the funders, which is to be 20th April, watch out for an official press release with more details in the weeks to come. We are very busy with lots of special features being installed in the woodland and people busy working.

The Crowle Show is fast approaching, we have a new date this year, the show has been moved back a month to the 22nd July. We also have lots of new classes competitions and attractions while still keeping the traditional and well loved show attractions.

New for this year we have the Produce show, with over 80 classes there will be lots of competition but a chance for lots of prizes to be won. We also have a Gundog display for this year and a new beer tent run by Red Melon who specialise in outdoor events. The equestrian events are still on and we hope that boys girls men and women, inspired by the Olympics come down and enter the show jumping.

Anti-social behaviour and vehicle nuisance in the car park and youths congregating and causing a nuisance to local residents at the church.

Update :During February there were no calls for service relating to the car park at Potts Lane although there was a call relating to incident to an incident of snowballs being thrown in the nearby area of the Market Place.

There were two calls relating to the Church Street area. These were two complaints of youths behaving in an antisocial manner being noisy in the street and banging on one resident’s windows. The Neighbourhood Policing Team did attend and the main offender was identified and spoken to at his home address in front of his parents. The thirteen year old male has since apologised to the resident about his unacceptable behaviour.

Rural Crime and Countrywatch Issues.

During February the number of calls for service regarding persons trespassing on land for the purpose of poaching deer, hunting hares with dogs and riding off road vehicles often causing damage to crops and fencing has reduced. The Neighbourhood Policing Team has reported two males, one from Keadby and one from the South Yorkshire area for document offences.

Countrywatch has seen an increase in numbers on the Isle and this is open to membership from farmers, landowners and other land users. This membership also includes access to a text messaging service which warns of information pertinent to those members, for example hare coursers, deer poaching, and theft. Anyone wishing to join please contact the Local Policing Team on the new Local police telephone number of 101.

Theft = A male from Crowle has been charged with two offences of theft and bailed to appear at North Lincolnshire Magistrates Court. Criminal Damage = A female from Crowle has been dealt as per the complainant’s wishes regarding her behaviour and damage to property in the town centre. Traffic Offences = A juvenile from Keadby has been reported for summons following a complaint of him riding a quad bike on the public roads without any driver documents. The Neighbourhood Police Team initially attended in the area and witnessed the offences being committed. Update re Drugs Offences = A female from Crowle has been dealt with for the possession of a Class A Controlled Drug.

A male from the South Yorkshire area has been given a Plan Drawing Services & formal warning regarding possession of cannabis.

THE AXHOLME JOINT RAILWAY A number of railway schemes for the Isle of Axholme were mooted in the 19 th century. One of the suggested London to York routes was to have been through the Isle, but nothing came of it.

During the 19th century there were about 200 separate railway companies at one period. To build a new railway, a Bill had to be put before Parliament. This was costly and time consuming. Rival companies that sometimes ended in the schemes being dropped could raise objections.

In 1846 George Hudson, the ‘Railway King’, promoted the idea of the Axholme, Gainsborough and York & North Midland Junction that was intended as a link between York and the Eastern Counties Railway. The plan had to be submitted to Parliament, but the House of Lords rejected this.

In 1847 there was a proposal to build a railway from Gainsborough through Axholme to Askern, but the idea never materialised. In 1878 the Great Eastern Railway sought an extension of its system into the lucrative Yorkshire coalfield by proposing the construction of a line to Askern through part of the Isle of Axholme. The Great Northern Railway opposed this scheme.

In 1883 the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway put the idea of a tramway forward.

It was to have a 3’ 6” gauge and was to run from Haxey to Eastoft. This again never materialised.

In 1896 the Light Railways Act was passed which facilitated the provision of railways in rural areas. It permitted the construction of a line under a Board of Trade Order, instead of seeking Parliamentary permission. In 1898 the Goole and Marshland Light Railway scheme, to build a railway from Goole to Reedness, Eastoft and Addlingfleet, was confirmed. The Isle of Axholme Light Railway scheme was proposed in the same year. It was to run from Haxey north to link with Goole and Marchland railway. In 1899 the Board of trade confirmed the scheme authorising the construction of 22 miles and 6 chains of railway. The line was to run from Haxey Station on the Great Northern and great Eastern Joint Railway north through Haxey, Epworth, Belton and Crowle to Reedness. A four and half mile branch line was built from Epworth north, down to Hatfield Moors.

By 1902 both the Goole and Marshland and the Axholme Railway Epworth Railway Station looking had been taken over by the Northtowards Haxey 1952 Eastern Company (N.E.) and the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway (L. & Y.) – hence the name Axholme Joint Railway (N.E. and L. & Y.).

In 1922 the North Eastern Company became part of the London and North Eastern Railway (L.N.E.R.). The Lancashire and Yorkshire railway became part of London and North Western, which in turn became part of London, Midland and Scottish (L.M.S.).

Thus the Axholme Joint Railway continued, but To it became a L.M.S. andcall L.N.E.R. Joint.

Happy Easter May I wish you all a very Happy Easter. I expect you are hoping for loads of chocolate in anticipation of the great day.

My Easter Egg was delivered some weeks ago. It’s not my usual ‘Wispa’ Easter Egg (although I hope to get one of those too).

My newly arrived egg is “The Real Easter Egg”. It’s ‘real’ because it is the only egg on the market that tells the ‘real’ story of Easter on the packaging – the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is also made from fair trade chocolate making sure the farmers who grow cocoa get a fair price for their product. Much as I enjoy other types of Easter Eggs, this is the best yet.

I want to flag up another opportunity for a ‘real’ event – experiencing the ‘real’ story.

The WATOTO CHILDREN’S CHOIR from Kampala, capital of Uganda, is coming to All Saints Church in Belton for a concert on Sunday 3rd June at 6.30pm. It’s the evening of The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and I cannot think of any better way to round off that day of celebration than hearing the Watoto Children’s Choir in concert singing ‘real’ songs about Jesus Christ. Admission is free and there are no tickets. As it is a Children’s Choir, it is an event that appeals to all ages.

So not only do I wish you a Happy Easter, but also a fantastic Watoto experience!

Althorpe and Keadby School Councillors’ Visit Last month, two of our school councillors, Lily and Declan, accompanied me to the ‘Feeling Safe’ meeting at the Teachers’ Centre.

It was the first time we had attended one of these meetings and we sat with a whole range of other people, including teachers, police officers, healthcare workers, pupils from other schools and an educational psychologist.

We discussed our anti - bullying work and listened to a talk on various issues. It was very interesting.

Lily and Declan were brilliant representatives; they spoke up at the meeting and put forward some suggestions which were well received. It was a pleasure to be there with them and, as their head teacher; they made me feel very proud.

We then went for lunch at Glanford Park’s restaurant, to plan how we would feed back to the other school councillors, once we got back to school.

The children said that it had been an interesting, and fun, morning’s work.

As a child, I was big. I had very bad eating habits which continued into adulthood. Typically, I’d have two burger and fries meals from Burger King for lunch — and maybe a family-sized bag of Maltesers after dinner.

At my heaviest I weighed more than 17st and was utterly miserable. I compensated for that by feigning a larger-than-life confidence to hide my true feelings. My friends all thought I was the life and soul of the party — it never occurred to them to wonder why I always left early on a night out, but the truth was that I couldn’t keep up the pretence all night.

Never going back: Anna has worked hard to drop from 17 to 10st, left, and doesn't want to be overweight again Whenever I’d been abroad in the past, I always deleted pictures of myself looking particularly fat, but this time I missed some. It was only when I was back home and loading the photos on to my laptop that I was confronted by the stark reality of my weight. I’d tried to cover myself up as I was conscious of being in flimsy clothing and swimwear, but as I stared at the evidence, it was blatantly obvious that my flesh was spilling over the seams of my clothes. It was hideous.

I’d got engaged to two months earlier, and suddenly I couldn’t bear the idea of being a fat bride. In fact, I felt physically sick when I imagined how fat I’d look in the photos. That was it — it was now or never I’d try to laugh it off when people called me ‘fatty’... I once broke a chair as I sat down, but managed not to cry until I got home I didn’t trust myself just to count calories, because I’d tried to do it in the past and failed. I decided a meal replacement diet offered my best chance of avoiding temptation and, after doing research, I decided to try the Cambridge Diet, where you replace regular meals for a rigid regime that consists of either a porridge, milk-shake, meal bar or soup. I’d be lying if I said it was easy at first. I used to eat all the time, all day — and even in secret — so, initially, I did miss food terribly. However, I knew that if I showed enough discipline, I’d lose weight — and I had a size 12 wedding-dress as my goal. I also had a personal consultant who gave me emotional support when I was craving a cheeseburger, and that made all the difference in the world.

So I stuck to the plan religiously, and I can’t describe the feeling when I stepped on the scales at the end of the first week to discover I’d lost 10lb. I was so motivated by the speed of my weight-loss, I was even more stringent in my eating habits.

From that moment on, and much to my astonishment, the weight fell off, and when I got married last October, I did so in the size 12 dress I’d promised myself. Some of my own family didn’t even recognise me. I’m a size 10 now and weigh 10st. I’m so proud of what I’ve achieved — thrilled that I found the emotional strength I needed to do something about my size.

That photo will always stand as a reminder of the person I used to be — but given how happy and confident I feel now, I know I will never go back.

Fun and Games at Althorpe and Keadby Indoor Athletics This term started with a ‘bang!’ as 24 Junior children participated in the Regional Indoor Athletics Final. This was a closely fought competition in which 10 schools, from across the county, all competed for the chance to represent North Lincolnshire. All the children performed to the best of their ability and enjoyed the experience of competing at ‘The Pods’.

Indoor Games Recently, the Infants and Juniors enjoyed an afternoon of indoor adventurous activity with Miss Notman, Sports Development Officer for North Lincolnshire. We had planned orienteering and other team building games outside but, sadly, the bad weather put a stop to that plan. But, it didn't stop us having fun - working on our team building and learning many new games like Crossing the Swamp, Velodrome and Human Alphabet. The Infants also enjoyed playing many games involving being blindfolded, as well as undertaking a very adventurous assault course.

Badminton County Finals The Axholme Academy girls made a long journey to Hull Badminton Centre for the County Finals.

The team was Georgia Green, Sinead Bramhill, Nicole Curtis, Rachel Capsticks and Lauren Hall who played previously in the North Lincs Finals.

The standard was so much higher than the girls had previously competed at. Most of the girls who were there were county players so the standard was very high.

The first game didn’t go too well, loosing to last years National finalists, Woolfreton but the girls got stronger & stronger as the tournament went on eventually beating Toll Bar School. The team finished 3 rd in the county which is an extremely good achievement.

The final standings were 1 Hymers 2.Woolfreton

Class Act Class Act was held on 1st March in the school hall at The Axholme Academy.

12 acts performed to a packed house. The acts included singers, groups and dancers. The judges had a tough decision as the standard was very high this year. The acts were gathered back onto the stage to announce the winners.

The two winners going on to represent the school at the semi-finals were announced as Marisa Lee & Francesca Cheshire. Marisa sang ‘A team’ by Ed Sheeran and Francesca sang ‘Valerie’ by Amy Winehouse.

Scunthorpe Young People’s Film Festival

On Saturday 3rd March the film festival was hosted at The Base Youth Centre in Scunthorpe.

Several of our students submitted films for categories ranging from animation, documentary and fiction. The films were produced by students during lessons as part of projects such as ‘Everybody Writes Day’ with Crowle Primary School and a media day which took part in the school.

On the evening, four students from The Axholme Academy received an award at the festival. Marisa Lee, Brooke Robjohns, Jake Maxfield and Ethan Coultard won the Younger Age Animation category with ‘Pushing Illegal Downloads Away.’ Also Jake Steele, William Coleman and James Bullass were short listed in the documentary category with ‘Exercise Video’.

My congratulations go out to each of these students for their success at the festival. I hope this will serve as inspiration to other students interested in film making and animation to produce some really high quality work which can be submitted next year’s film festival.

The children at Secret Garden Private Childcare celebrated the Hindu festival of Holi through a variety of activities during the week of 5th March 2012.

This celebration is also known as the Festival of Colour, and all of the activities offered were based upon bright colours or Holi traditions. It is customary during Holi for people to throw coloured powders, paints or water at each other.

We decided to adapt this activity by filling a tuff spot tray with lots of brightly coloured shredded paper. The children in the photos particularly enjoyed this activity, and were keen to reach out and grasp the paper when it was sprinkled from above. The children also played peek a boo games in which staff members would place paper on their heads and then say ‘boo’ when the children pulled them off. We also offered lots of other activities to celebrate Holi including coloured water, fibre optic colour changing lights, powder paints, stencilling and also shared songs and stories about colour.

Year 9 Sculpture Project Year 9 students at The Axholme Academy have been working with West Yorkshire based sculptor Jim Bond to produce a large abstract metal sculpture which is now a striking addition to the façade of the school.

The project started with a visit to The Yorkshire Sculpture Park which inspired the students to produce their own ideas on paper and then as scaled down models.

The entire year group then voted for a winning design to be produced in metal and on a much larger scale. The winning design was made by Ellie Valentine, Rowena Hill, Laura Clarke Hill and Robyn O’Leary, although due to the moving parts in their design, which are operated by a motor, it has been produced for inside the school, and so the runner up design by Mitch Mason, Jake Gowlett and Sam Shipman is the sculpture which can immediately be seen on arrival at The Axholme Academy.

The project is one of many which has been funded by the L-R Jim Bond (Sculptor) Jake Gowlett, Sam Shiman & Mitch Mason Creative Partnerships Change School Programme, a scheme set up to promote creativity in schools through collaboration with arts practitioners.

Mrs O’Horan, the project coordinator, said “our students have benefited enormously from working with a practicing artist. They have developed their practical skills and team working skills to produce a fantastic addition to the front of our school.”

Isle Group of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust Philippines Wildlife Conservation Rachel Shaw will be entertaining us on Thursday April 5th at 7.30pm when she will be telling us about her visit to the Philippines. Rachel works for the Lincolnshire Trust as Publicity Officer and she has travelled to other parts of the world, both to walk and look at conservation so this promises to be an interesting evening. We will also be having a very short AGM. Slug Workshop On Thursday May 3rd at 7.30pm Chris de Feu will be telling us everything there is to know about slugs and people who have already been to this workshop have said that it is very interesting so don’t be put off by the title. To many people slugs are just pests that should be destroyed but perhaps there is another side to them, do they have a purpose? There are several different types of slugs and we are asking those who come along to bring some with them if possible. We look forward to seeing you and your slugs on May 3rd.

All our indoor meetings are held in the Stephen Jones Hall at the rear of the Methodist Chapel, Low Street, Haxey on the first Thursday of the month at 7.30pm and everyone is welcome, you don’t have to be a member. There is a New Car Tyres. small admission charge of £1 and there is Puncture Repairs. a raffle and refreshments.
