News, News, News, News, News, News... Kilham Hall All weekly activities at the Hall are now back in full swing. On Tuesday 24th September, the Tuesday Coffee Club plans to hold a special Macmillan Coffee Morning with all monies being donated to the Macmillan charity, a review of the event will be in the next edition of the Arrow. The children's Hallowe'en Party is drawing closer and tickets will be on sale at the Post Office from Monday 21st October. There will only be 50 tickets available, priced £1 and they are for Primary School children only, between the ages of 4 and 11 years. Mr Dan will be entertaining the children who, we hope, will spook us out with their fancy dress which will be judged and a prize awarded for the most inventive and, possibly, the most spooky. May we politely ask again that there is only one accompanying adult per family remaining for the duration and that no other children outside the age range are brought along. We have to adhere to Health and Safety rules for the Hall and Mr Dan needs space to entertain. Refreshments will be the ever popular hot dogs, cake and juice and the afternoon should, once again, be fun filled and spooktastic! The Kilham Hall Committee AGM will be early in November. The AGM, by law, is open to the local community and there will be posters displayed, in Branton Post Office and in Cantley, advising residents of the time, date and venue soon. Kilham Hall committee

Branton St Wilfrid’s School News New Starters We welcomed all our staff and pupils back from their summer holidays at the start of the new school year. Our New Reception children have all started school now after a phased entry and we have a full class of 30 new children. We look forward to sharing with you our activities and events over the coming year!

Eco Day

On Wednesday 11th September the school had a visit from Doncaster Council’s Energy officer, Miss Hurst. Miss Hurst gave the whole school an assembly about recycling and how to look after our planet. She showed us a PowerPoint about how we can make our school greener (not by painting the school green, though!). Then Miss Hurst visited Classes 1, 2, 4 and 6, leading activities that taught us about how to recycle at home and at school, and that taught us about energy and the weather. Class 6 did an activity where they worked on a campaign to encourage recycling and conserving things like energy and water. They worked as a team to design a reassuring poster, logo and a slogan, advertising how to save water or energy. They then had to present it in front of their, classmates so some people made up mascots and some did a play about recycling. Class 2 had a session about the weather, and Class 1 learnt about recycling. Class 4 enjoyed a session with Miss Hirst where they made pinwheels about saving energy. Overall, we had a great day learning about how to protect the environment!

Class 6’s Trip to Marrick Priory On Monday 10th May, Class 6 set off for an adventure-packed week at Marrick Priory, in North Yorkshire. The week started with orienteering and initiative exercises, where the children had to work in teams to solve different problems, such as trying to move themselves around a bench without touching the floor, using crates and planks to make a path! Whilst not all of the tasks were completed successfully, they were great fun! Then, for the next two days, the children completed a variety of outdoor adventure activities. One of the most popular was abseiling down the belltower at the Priory, and climbing on the High and Ropes Courses and the rock-climbing walls. Then there was canoeing, and despite the cold, rainy weather, the children took part enthusiastically. There weren’t many of them that came out of the lake without being drenched, after playing battleships and a lovely game where they could throw wet sponges at each other! The children also took part in a day-walk on Thursday, and walked up to Grinton Smelt Mills, where they looked for galina and enjoyed a day in the Yorkshire Dales. We finished the week with a campfire, where the children sang songs and performed songs that they had written about their week at Marrick. The children came back tired out, but full of memories of a week that they said they would never forget!

Class 5’s trip to Gainsborough Old Hall On Wednesday … May, Class 5 went to Gainsborough Old Hall, as part of their History topic on the Tudors. Having learnt about how rich and poor Tudor men and women lived at school, we spent an interesting and entertaining morning looking at how Tudor servants would prepare for a feast, before we re-enacted a feast that took place when Henry VIII visited Gainsborough Hall in 1541. We dressed as nobles, servants, dancers, jesters and even jugglers. We also looked at a variety of Tudor artefacts and played Tudor games. All in all, it was a thoroughly enjoyable day!

AUCKLEY PARISH COUNCIL NEWSLETTER October/November 2013 Auckley Show The 2013 Auckley Show proved once more to be a great success. A large and varied number of stalls and activities were provided to suit every age group, and there was an amazing array of produce displayed in the marquee. Members of the Show Committee are to be congratulated for all the time and effort they put into staging the Show and evening concert, not to mention the Children’s Disco and Fishing Competition.

Flower Tubs The colourful display of flowers around the village is admired and appreciated by residents and visitors to the area. Council extends its thanks to members of the Auckley Gardens and Allotments Association who give up their time to plant, water and maintain the plants. Grateful thanks are also due to residents of School Lane for watering the plants on the triangular area at Eastfield Lane.

Fir Tree Avenue Fir Tree Avenue on the Hayfield Estate has been an open roadway since the RAF housing estate was first established, with the gymnasium being located alongside the road. When this building was demolished for development, temporary fencing was erected across the road, presumably as a safety measure whilst machinery was being used. However, after a short period of activity, the building site was left in a derelict state and the fencing has now been moved back from the road to once more allow vehicular and pedestrian access. Some residents, unhappy with the opening of the road have requested the installation of bollards to prevent vehicular access. However, this is not possible as residents’ deeds state that this roadway in its entirety must be kept clear and free at all times from obstruction for pedestrians and vehicles.

Bogus Callers Residents are warned to be mindful of bogus callers who have been operating in the area.

The Copse Off Eastfield Lane The Police have been asked to monitor the copse area, following several attempts to set fire to trees. If residents see anything suspicious they should ring the Police on telephone no. 101. The problem of garden refuse being dumped in the copse continues. This is anti-social behaviour which is totally unnecessary now that green wheelie bins and local skip centres are provided . Council is indebted to a number of nearby residents for recently clearing and removing refuse from the copse. Their efforts are greatly appreciated.

Planning Application to Develop Land at Hayfield Lane and First Avenue

A public consultation was held on 23rd August to enable residents to give their views on the application to develop the former RAF field on Hayfield Lane with a mixture of houses and play equipment, with additional sporting facilities being provided on First Avenue. A total of 750 residents were contacted and 54 attended. The majority of those who did respond were not in favour of the development and indicated they would not use the facilities. Doncaster Council’s Planning Committee has yet to make a decision on the application.

Application to Make The Eagle and Child a Listed Building In June 2012 the Parish Council applied to English Heritage for the above building to be added to the List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. Unfortunately the Secretary of State has decided not to list the Eagle and Child Public House, however, the associated mounting block is now listed at Grade ll.

FAB Parish

Revd Neil Redeyoff and Revd Louise Tinniswood

Food Late September, or early October, is the traditional time that Churches hold their harvest festivals and give produce away to those in need. Around our villages we regularly see farmers at work. Perhaps ploughing the fields by Mosham Road, Auckley, or delivering potatoes straight from the ground to Higgins’ in Finningley. Despite the apparent abundance of food around us here, there are many families in the Doncaster area, who simply don’t have enough, in fact 13 million people in the UK live below the poverty line, if I have my maths correct then that’s an astounding 1 in 5! The Doncaster Foodbank is trying to help people in this situation by helping to feed local people in crisis. But how does a Foodbank work? Food is donated: All food given out is donated, whether by schools, churches, businesses, individuals, or through supermarket collections. Food is sorted and stored: Food is sorted by volunteers according to type and 'best before date'. They also check it is undamaged (and that it can be used in a food parcel) and pack it into boxes and store it, ready for use. Food is then made up into food parcels for clients. Frontline professionals identify people in need: Care professionals such as Citizens Advice Bureau staff, health visitors, housing workers, social workers and probation officers, amongst others, identify people in crisis and issue them with a foodbank voucher. Clients receive food: Clients bring their voucher to a foodbank centre where it can be exchanged for three days supply of emergency food. Food parcels have been designed by dieticians to provide recipients with nutritionally balanced food. Clients are signposted to further support: Volunteers meet clients over a cup of tea and snack and are able to signpost people to agencies who can help resolve the longer-term problem. As foodbanks are an emergency food-provision service, it is important to get clients in touch with organisations who can help them address the underlying problem. Both St Saviour’s, Auckley and St Oswald’s, Finningley, are trying to get involved by acting as a collection point for food donations as well as encouraging our members to donate. Of course you may wish to help too, and so we’re setting up local collection points in both churches. Obviously both churches are open every Sunday! But, St Saviour’s is open each Thursday morning and St Oswald’s each Wednesday afternoon, and we will be happy to take any items that you wish to donate. For more information on this you can look on the internet at http://doncaster.foodbank.org.uk Blessings Revd. Neil Redeyoff St Saviour's, Auckley & St Oswald's & Holy Trinity, Finningley
