Welcome to the September issue of the Branton & AuckLey Arrow

Wow, what a summer! We are so very lucky to live close to the Yorkshire Wildlife Park and benefit from the summer concerts. To have an amazing attraction on our doorstep which offers something for everyone is incredible. Depending on how close you are to the park, being able to sit out in your garden and listen to the live music on a Saturday night was brilliant.

Add to this treat the Auckley Show! What an incredible show it was this year, the weather was fabulous and the show felt bigger than ever. Everything is so well organised and it is clear the effort that is made in organising such an event. Huge congratulations to all the organisers who work all year round to make sure the event is fantastic, you did not disappoint.

As September draws closer, we focus on the new academic year ahead. I hope all students who are embarking on a new chapter of their life, got what they needed from their results. I have just watched England Lionesses, lose the world cup. They will be devastated but in time will recognise the huge step made in woman's sport and more and more girls will choose sport now than ever before.

The October issue deadline for adverts and content is Wednesday 13th September. The Arrow will be delivered by 1st October.

Best wishes

Doncaster Rambler’s Misson & Austerfield.

On a very warm morning, sixteen ramblers assembled alongside Misson Church. Following the leader briefing we set off in a westerly direction from the church and soon were using a broad stony track which would take us into Newington. At one point a family of swans including their young were noted at the side of the track (see photograph).

Intermittent stretches of water were noted in close proximity. The track ended on the approach to Newington where we were required to use a narrow pavement alongside the road.

Before long a grassy embankment was used for improved views and to get us further away from the traffic. Austerfield was reached and a walk along the High Street was featured. Peter Rowsell, our publicity officer and a resident of Austerfield joined us here, (returning after a long spell away due to ill health) and walked with the group back to Misson.

A brief stop was made at St Helena’s church where there were information boards regarding local walking trails to peruse. Our refreshment break was taken at Austerfield village green, a short walk from the church. Our route back to Misson was made by using field footpaths, including one path skirting a golf course. Two small bridges were encountered which have both been renewed recently. The footpaths were in a good condition. Our arrival into Misson was from a north westerly direction where we arrived at 12.40. David Horne 10/08.

How many Steps? As little as 2500 a day apparently but it's not the count that matters but the WALKING the health benefits of which is once again in the news. So if you haven't already give it a go Non-members welcome, just turn up and say “Hallo” you will be well looked after

Please visit our website https://www.doncasterramblers.org.uk/ for latest information, including future activity. Also follow us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/doncasterramblers/ for details of past Rambler outings. Remember while out observe the Countryside Code and give way to other walkers.

AUCKLEY SHOW 2023

Super well done to this year’s Auckley Show organisers. The weather was great and people came in their hundreds to enjoy everything the show had to offer. We visited with family and friends and had a wonderful day, there was so much to do and see.

Congratulations to everyone who won a rosette and to everyone who took part. I was very proud to see my Dad win first prize for his Pot Leeks and Best in Show Vegetable. No chance I will be following in his footsteps, I struggle to keep grass alive!

Hope you enjoy a selection of photos shared on social media. Can’t wait for next year’s event.

DONCASTER CANCER DETECTION TRUST

Wow! Where has the summer gone? Can hardly believe we are into September already. Although it is short notice we will be at St John’s Hospice, Balby, on Saturday, 3 rd September to help them celebrate their 30th anniversary and to celebrate our 50th anniversary. It was with the foresight of our founder Jeannette Fish that DCDT started fundraising in 1985 to raise money for a hospice. By 1992 St John’s was built and equipped after raising over £2 million, thanks to the wonderful generosity of local people, groups and organisations. The Open Day will be from 11.00am to 4.00pm.

As we are approaching the latter part of the year we don’t think it is too early to mention that Doncaster Wheatsheaf Singers are holding their very popular Annual Charity Christmas Concert on Saturday, 17th December at Doncaster Minster. Once again they will be supporting Doncaster Cancer Detection Trust for which we are extremely grateful. We will be able to provide further information next month. Also, a reminder that we will be holding our Memory Tree in Frenchgate Centre on the lead up to Christmas. As mentioned last month we find that many people prefer to donate on-line, details of which are on our website. However, for those who prefer the personal touch and wish to pay by cash or cheque we will be in the Frenchgate Centre from Monday, 28th November to Saturday, 10th December (excluding Sunday, 4th December).

Should you need to get in touch with us our contact details are: 22 Wood Street, Doncaster DN1 3LW (entrance by the side of Kerry Gough Florists), second floor (lift available), Room 209. Tel. 01302 325029. Email: info@dcdt.co.uk. Website: dcdt.co.uk.

As always, we welcome fundraising ideas so do please get in touch if you would like to get involved.

For more information on the work of the Doncaster Cancer Detection Trust or to donate, please check out their web site www.dcdt.co.uk. Also on Face Book.
