Welcome to the February issue of the

Branton & AuckLey Arrow Well hello February, you are always such a welcome after the long 31 days of January, and you are here a little longer this ‘leap year’. So, hands up who made it? Resolutions still in place? Dry January done? New challenges started? Or like me, are you just glad you made it…

Well whatever you achieved, February offers some light relief with the fun of Valentine’s Day and the Wild Bistro Café at The Yorkshire Hive have a great offer to tempt you with. With half term beckoning, Boston Park have some fun lined up to keep our younger (and older) people entertained with lambing week. Users of Kilham Hall in Branton will be aware of its recent refurbishment. An internal store has been removed to create a bigger floor space and a new floor laid giving users more space to dance, train, party, have fun and play bingo amongst many other activities.

The March issue deadline for adverts and content is Wednesday 14th February. The Arrow will be delivered by 1st March 2024.

Best wishes

Michelle Sidebottom

Community News

Unfortunately, we have to report that burglary offences are continuing at houses, and we have noticed an increase in shed and garage burglaries. Pedal cycles continue to be targeted and an increasing number of these are being stolen from sheds. The demand for and use of electrically assisted pedal cycles is growing and these can be expensive, even the basic machine can cost a few hundred pounds. Reports of these machines being stolen are appearing on local crime figures. If you have purchased any type of pedal cycle at Christmas for yourself or as a present for someone else, don’t let it be stolen from a shed. Sheds are by design not a secure environment to store valuable property. If all else fails, thieves will remove a shed roof and steal property that way. Replace screws in hinges with clutch head or non-return screws. Add a couple of additional hinges to support the original hinges fitted. Fit a substantial padlock and reinforce that part of the door to which the lock is fitted with a sheet of 16-gauge sheet steel. Use a coach bolt to secure the padlock and hasp to the shed. Use a ground anchor and cable to secure your property inside the shed. Ensure the anchor is securely located in the ground and not simply fastened to the shed itself. If you do not enter the shed at night, why would you need a light inside? Usually, the only people going into sheds at night are thieves. Consider fitting an alarm; Battery operated alarms are not expensive and can be quite effective. JNE Security manufacture a battery-operated portable alarm that sends a signal to a receiver up to 200 meters away or a text message to a mobile phone. Both are simple methods of alerting a householder that someone has entered their shed or other outbuilding. The devices are cheap and further information can be found at www.personalalarms.com/acatalog/shed-alarms.html Burglary prevention advice is available on the South Yorkshire police website at www.southyorkshire.police.uk/sites/ If you have any questions you can contact Eamonn Larkin the Doncaster Police crime reduction officer via email eamonn.larkin@southyorkshire.police.uk

Community News A GOOD MORNING At last a warm bright morning, so far into this wet May. Cycling along Gatewood Lane, several things make my day. Quiet, peaceful solitude, each side Rapeseed flowers bright. The fragrance caught on the air with yellow fields casting light.

BRANTON LITTER PICK

Will meet at Kilham Hall, Branton on Saturday 2nd March at 9.30am Everyone welcome to join us.

Past the fields into the copse, pheasants noisily take flight. Bird song from every tree, Hawthorn blossom a delight. Back along this scenic lane something to really excite. Slowly quartering the field, a Marsh Harrier in low flight. A poem sent by a local resident who prefers to remain anonymous. Hope you enjoy :)

As a school we have been participating in the ‘Take 5’ programme for a couple of years now. It is designed to help and support children with their own emotions, giving them coping strategies to reflect on making better choices and finding that inner calmness required to succeed in the classroom. The well-being exercises are assessed by all age groups when they come in from their lunchtime break, or whenever refocussing is required within the learning environment. It is just a 5-minute breathing and reflection task that the children are excited to participate in. The year 5 and 6 children even have a waiting list to present the sessions. Both the staff and children have seen such an amazing difference and the positivity it creates amongst the students is quite astonishing. ‘I learn so much better once I’ve calmed down’ - Year 5 student ‘It feels special to lead the breathing techniques’ - Year 6 student If you would like any more information on this programme, please visit the website www.eachamazingbreath.org

Doncaster Rambler’s Haxey Hood

Setting off from the school lay by on the Nooking at Haxey heading for Epworth and Low Burnham. The plan was to end the walk and then give ourselves an opportunity to view the start of the famous Haxey Hood game about which more later. We briefly walked on the old railway track the Axholme Line and then on to Haxey church. We then passed through Upperthorpe and northward towards Haxey Turbary where a coffee break was taken. The journey thus far had been easy walking without too much mud for a change. We moved on to Epworth turbary and eventually down to the Queens Head pub in the town where one or two of us who shall not be named stayed for an hour. Some sampled the cafes in the town instead. Our leader Rob had been regaling us with information about the history and geography of the area on frequent stops which was much appreciated by all of us. After lunch we made for Low Burnham and the historic Holy Well. Once past the village we took Burnham Beck Lane to join back up with the Axholme Line to Haxey. At this point a few went to their cars while the majority stayed on to view the Hood and joined the vast number of people present. After the Fool had made his speech with some difficulty because he was being "smoked" (part of the tradition) most headed for the field adjacent to the Church where the Sway began. The idea of the game is that the supporters of four local pubs compete to take the Hood (actually a leather truncheon) back to their respective pub. Its a free for all scrum and when the Sway started moving ominously towards us ramblers we made our departure! Many thanks to Rob for leading us expertly and for guiding us safely back and Angela for some great photos. An historical note follows but for your information the winner on the day was the Kings Arms Haxey. P.O.I The nationally famous Haxey Hood game celebrated on Old Christmas Day 6th January each year used to be a more important occasion than Christmas itself that is at least in Haxey. People flocked to the village from far afield and relatives and friends would come to stay for several days to enjoy all the events that surrounded this long standing tradition. The usual account of the origin of this boisterous affair says that in 1213 the Lady of the Manor Lady de Mowbray was out riding through Haxey when she suddenly lost her hood in a gale. Thirteen local farm workers pursued the good lady's Hood and one of them (the Fool) retrieved it but allowed another (the Lord) to take it from him and give it back to Lady de Mowbray. The chase had pleased her Ladyship and she wanted the gallant action to be remembered and commemorated on the same day each year. She gave 13 half acres of land to pay for this institution of the custom and for the feast that followed it. Well now that tale sets the scene for this age long custom of chasing after the Hood and the chief characters in this annual scrimmage are the Lord of the Hood the Fool and 11 assistants known as Boggins and these make up the original 13 men who gave chase over 800 years earlier. Nigel Ball Non-members welcome, just turn up and say “Hallo” you will be well looked after. The Charity Christmas Concert organised by the Doncaster Wheatsheaf Singers and supported by The Co-op on Saturday 16th December 2023 at Doncaster Minster was once again a huge success. The concert featured performances by The Doncaster Wheatsheaf Singers and Hatfield & Askern Colliery Band with the 20ft live Minster Christmas (Memory) Tree creating a wonderful backdrop for the evening. The performers, The Minster staff, Co-op Food, Funeralcare and our local Co-op Member Pioneers all worked together both before the event and on the night to provide a wonderful evening's entertainment which also included refreshments during the interval. The refreshments and raffle prizes were once again provided and served by our local Coop stores and their management staff. This was yet again a fantastic turnout by the people of Doncaster to support a great cause, Doncaster Cancer Detection Trust. Proceeds from the concert raised an amazing £1656 and the amazing Memory Christmas tree in the Minster (which was also donated by Doncaster Coop Funeralcare) raised a further £128.74. A cheque for £1784.74 was presented to representatives of the charity in Doncaster Minster on Friday 5th January 2024. The attached photograph shows just a small number of the volunteers who helped to put the concert together from the DW Singers and H&A Colliery Band, Coop Food , Coop Funeralcare and Coop Membership along with representatives from Doncaster Cancer Detection Trust and Doncaster Minster. Dorothy Miller, Chairman of the Doncaster Wheatsheaf Singers who helped to organise the concert wished to extend her thanks not only to the performers but to all involved in making this event such a highlight of the Christmas celebrations in Doncaster. DONCASTER CANCER DETECTION TRUST We would like to thank everyone who visited our Memory Tree in the Frenchgate Centre before Christmas. We can now report that donations totalled £2,088 which is a fantastic amount, especially considering the economic situation. Our grateful thanks also go to Frenchgate management and to our lovely volunteers who helped on the stall. The Charity Christmas Concert held at Doncaster Minster raised a wonderful £1,784.14 for us, which included £128.74 from the Memory Tree inside the Minster. We are enormously grateful to Dorothy Miller, the Doncaster Wheatsheaf Singers, Hatfield & Askern Colliery Band and the Co-op for arranging the evening. The Minster was full, which was a tribute to all their hard work in making this such a popular annual event. We are currently in discussions with Doncaster Royal Infirmary regarding cancer-related equipment they need. We hope to bring you more news in the next issue. If you would like to fundraise on our behalf we would be very pleased to hear from you. Our details are: 22 Wood Street, Doncaster DN1 3LW (entrance by the side of Kerry Gough Florists), first floor (lift available), Room 104. Tel. 01302 325029. Email: info@dcdt.co.uk. Website: dcdt.co.uk. As the office is not fully manned it is best to Email or telephone in advance if you are thinking of coming to see us. We are always looking for volunteers to help in various ways. If you have office skills, would like to join our committee or help on stalls at various events, please do get in touch with us. You will be made very welcome.
