Welcome to the September issue of Once again, a massive well done to the organisers of this years Auckley Show. What a beautiful day it turned out to be. I was there around 2pm and it was very busy and everyone looked like they were having fun, especially the dogs despite the heat! We will have the full run down of results in the October issue as I delayed the print for as long as possible to get a few photos in. LOCAL CALL FOR SITES
Auckley Parish is in the process of producing a Neighbourhood Plan alongside the Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council Local Plan, both of which will hopefully be approved and published in 2019. As part of the process, we are now issuing a public call for land from within the parish, in order to identify the sites which will be approved for development between 2019 and 2035. Accordingly, if you own land within the Auckley Parish Boundary, you are invited to submit a site or sites for consideration for residential, economic, retail or recreational development. Sites can include ‘in fill’ or ‘brownfield sites’ and there is no minimum size for any site. All applications will be considered.

Specsavers Armthorpe Official Opening Saturday 8th September 2018 The new Specsavers store at the Armthorpe Shopping Centre is looking brilliant and is fully equipped with the latest in optical technology. With over ÂŁ250 000 worth of investment and new jobs, it is a real boost for the local economy. The store has two test rooms and ample free parking directly outside. Kilham Hall Recreation Park
Polite Notice
There have been a few incidents at Kilham Hall park recently where broken glass has been found on the footpath and by the enclosed young children's play area. The glass has been shattered on both occasions which makes it very difficult to clear up and creates a real danger to those using the park. If you break glass at the park, as accidents do happen, please make sure it is cleared up properly or a responsible adult is informed so they can clear it up, If we could all remind our children who use the park, a litter bin is provided for litter so we can all play a part in keeping our park tidy and safe for everyone.

RSPCA Big Walkies It’s time to step out with your dog! This year, the RSPCA Doncaster, Rotherham and District Branch are holding their Big Walkies at Cusworth Hall on Sunday 14th October. Situated in the beautiful grounds, this year’s Big Walkies will have three walking routes available - The Buggy Walk; The Gentle Amble and The Explorer, so there is a walk for every dog and everyone. Registration for The Big Walkies begins at 11.15am and closes at 2.00pm. You can also register online at: www.rspcadoncasterrotherham.org.uk/Event/the-big-walkies Our guided walk, The Explorer, will start promptly at 12.30pm. The Buggy Walk and The Gentle Amble can begin as soon as registration has taken place, with no set starting time. Costing just £10.00 to enter, all proceeds go to support animals rescued from cruelty and neglect at RSPCA South Yorkshire Animal Centre. You can also buy doggy bandanas and commemorative Tshirts, this really is an event not to be missed – it is a dog walker’s delight all in a great cause! There are good bus routes to Cusworth Hall and excellent parking facilities. The address is Cusworth Lane, Doncaster DN5 7TU. This year, the RSPCA South Yorkshire Animal Centre has already re-homed over 420 animals. Our mission is to rehabilitate and re-home vulnerable animals and this rehabilitation and re-homing work relies on kind donations from the public. We rely on events such as the Big Walkies.

Danum Probus Club is an organisation for men who have retired or are semi-retired from their profession, business or other employment who want to maintain a social network with others who have similar interests. Danum Probus Club meets on the first and third Mondays of the month at Town Moor Golf Club, Bawtry Road, Belle Vue, Doncaster starting at 10 am. Members held their Summer lunch at the Golf Club on Monday 21 July, which was followed by a discussion about the future of the Club. These discussions will be considered at the Committee Meeting in late August with a view to brining some proposals to the next full meeting. Pat McLaughlin was our speaker on Monday 6 August, a replacement for our advertised speaker who was ill. But Pat is always a welcome guest because we know we are going to get a well researched and presented talk. And this was no exception to that rule, it being a follow up to a previous presentation about the rise of civilisations throughout the world. We were taken from the early advanced civilisation of Peru to to the stone circles of Avebury and Stonehenge with many other placed in between. A presentation well up to Pat’s high standards. Two meetings are scheduled for September. On Monday 3 September Mike Store will once again be regailing us with Masters of Mirth”, and on Monday 17 September we will welcome Jane Breach speaking about Drax Power Station. Both meetings are at Town Moor Golf Club starting at 10am. Citizens Advice Doncaster Borough shares tips to help Universal Credit applications run smoothly Citizens Advice Doncaster Borough is sharing tips on how people can best prepare for making a Universal Credit application so they can be paid on time. This follows the release of a new report from national Citizens Advice which finds a third of people who were helped by the charity struggle to provide the evidence needed to finish off their Universal Credit application. Universal Credit is a new benefit which combines 6 benefits into 1, including Jobseeker’s Allowance and Working Tax Credits, that is currently being rolled out across the UK. For many, the benefit is working well but a significant number are having difficulties with it. Since full rollout in Doncaster, Citizens Advice have helped many clients with a Universal Credit related problem – including entitlement, applying for and budgeting for the new benefit. Citizens Advice Doncaster Borough has the following advice for anyone making a claim for Universal Credit: Provide evidence as soon as possible to make sure you’re paid in full and on time. If you need to apply for extra costs, like housing, you will need to show additional paperwork. Make sure you check you have completed all the stages of the claim. After making an initial online claim, you need to book a Jobcentre appointment. In total there are 10 stages which need to be completed, some of which are time sensitive. If you miss a deadline, you might have to start the process again. If you get stuck, ask for help. If you’re struggling to fill in the online application form or have problems providing the the right paperwork, ask for help as soon as possible so your payment isn’t delayed. If you are struggling to pay your bills or deal with debts, come to Citizens Advice as soon as possible – we can help get you back on track and prevent the problem getting worse.. National Citizens Advice asked people the Citizens Advice service helped with Universal Credit how hard they found it to provide proof for extra costs, like housing and childcare. Out of those who were surveyed: 48% found it difficult to provide evidence for health conditions 40% found found it difficult to provide evidence for housing 35% found it difficult to provide evidence for childcare The research also shows that people receiving their first full payment late stood a higher chance of getting into greater debt, or falling into it. When people didn’t receive their first Universal Credit payment on time, their chances of being in debt increased by a quarter (23%). They were also 60% more likely to borrow money from a lender to help tide them over. The report recommends that the government simplifies the claims process, makes it easier to provide evidence for extras costs, and ensure adequate support is on offer to people making claims. Karen Bothamley, Chief Executive of Citizens Advice Doncaster Borough, said: “Making an application for Universal Credit can be complex, and there are many different stages to get through before crossing the finish line. “This new research shows that providing the right paperwork for extra costs is one of the stages which causes the most headaches for people. “The government should look at making it easier to provide evidence online and people should also be aware of what’s required of them so they receive their payment on time.” For information and advice, contact Citizens Advice Doncaster Borough on 0344 499 4137 or speak to our debt specialists on 01302 846745, 01405 741457 or 01709 572400

Branton St Wilfrid’s said goodbye in style to their year 6 leavers. It was a roller coaster of a week with musical concerts, Leavers Mass, Party and a very emotional Y6 Leaver’s assembly. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house! The children started the week with a wonderful concert where they sang many musical hits from Annie and The Greatest Showman. The children sang beautifully and we were entertained by some Hawaiian dancing! At the Leavers Mass they took us through their memories of St Wilfrid’s and then it was party time at the Earl of Doncaster where they played party games and danced the night away. The Leavers Assembly on Friday was beautiful with more singing, reading of poems from their time at St Wilfrids and a farewell video which raised lots of laughs. Unusual Outings for Thorne Camera Club Most people have a hobby of some kind, however, not many people make their hobby into a business, and those that do often regret it, losing both leisure and enthusiasm. Alan Turner, of Al’s Tattoo Studio in Dunscroft, has had what might seem to most, a strange hobby for many years, and has quite recently opened it up to public gaze, and very interesting it proved to be to Camera Club members. Al has what is considered to be the largest private collection of skeletons in the country, representing various species from all over the world, and they can be viewed at the Skeleton Museum on Station Road in Dunscroft. Arriving as a bag of bones, in a box, Alan painstakingly fits the pieces together, posing the skeleton in natural or humorous positions. The process can be a long one. An anteater skeleton took 2 years to complete. Some are large animals, others small, but Al challenged members to find the smallest of all – a fairy! After searching the cabinets and cases members gave in, and were shown the fairy riding bareback on a beetle! Admittedly the fairy was made up, using fly wings and other bits, just one of the fantastic things on view at this amazing place. Not all outings are so successful, as members who went to Washburn, near Harrogate, found. Looking forward to a day by the river in the Yorkshire Dales, photographing a kayak slalom championship, they left Thorne early one morning. An hour and a half later they were by the gate to the activity centre, locked out. Due to the weather and shortage of water, (Stephen, party leader, reported the reservoir from which water is released was very low, with a dog paddling after geese some 150 yards out), the championship was cancelled at short notice. With a glorious day forecast, and beautiful countryside around, the party rallied and visited nearby Plumpton Rocks. Similar to the better known Brimham Rocks, it is a photogenic area and provided some shade to relax and eat lunch. So it was not a wasted journey, just a different outing from the one they set out on. As summer draws to a close, which it inevitably must, Camera Club members will gather together for a Social Evening in the Punch Bowl Inn, to catch up with friends, share news and gossip, and talk about the outings they enjoyed. A relaxed and informal evening, anyone interested in the Camera Club is welcome to come along and join in. The Social is September 10th from around 7pm, while the Autumn Programme starts in earnest on 17th in the Methodist Church Hall. If you have an interest in Photography, why not give it a try. Twenty two of us met up in Tideswell on another perfect summer's day for this lovely 10 mile walk in the White Peak. After descending Tideswell Dale we joined Miller's Dale and headed downstream alongside the River Wye with its imposing limestone cliffs and past the imposing mills of Litton and Cressbrook. We then joined the Monsal Trail with its many chirpy families of cyclists, crossed the famous viaduct and through Monsal Tunnel before taking the footpath over thirsty fields, through Little Longstone and up towards Crossdale Head which, at a height of around 350m. afforded spectacular views for many miles in most directions. This was followed by a downhill stretch along Castelegate Lane before branching off west and crossing Cressbrook Dale and up Tansley Dale to our later-than-usual lunch stop in the picture postcard village of Litton. Having already completed over 8.5 miles, our afternoon was a gentle 1.5 mile meander downhill back to our cars at Tideswell. This was a super day's walk in spectacular surroundings with some new routes and views for us to enjoy. Thanks Tony, for all the preparation and leadership and Norman for shepherding us all back safely.

POI Miller’s Dale – This is a SSI site as well as being of interest to geologists. The local landmark is the viaduct, first built by the Midland Railway in 1866. Increasing traffic meant that a second viaduct parallel to the first was built in 1905, increasing the number of tracks to four. Litton Mill – Set up in 1782 by Ellis Needham and Thomas Frith, who being unable to find a suitable labour force locally, used the 1601 Poor Law Act to indenture children form Derby to work the cotton mill. Despite this the venture failed. The original mill was destroyed by fire in 1874. The Monsal Trail - is about 8.5 miles (13.7 km) in length and opened in 1981. It starts at the Topley Pike junction (in Wye Dale, 3 miles (4.8 km) east of Buxton) and runs to Coombs Viaduct, 1 mile (1.6 km) south-east of Bakewell. It follows the valley of the River Wye and runs parallel to the A6.
