elcome to the September issue of the Branton & Auckley The rain did not stay away at this year’s Auckley Show, however, it didn't stop the locals! They were rewarded later in the afternoon as the sun came out. What a fantastic show it was, many of the exhibits on display were well thought out and of a really good standard. The committee have done an amazing job and deserve a pat on the back for all of their effort. If you are interested in joining the team or helping in any way, I know they will be really pleased to hear from you. We have some photographs inside this month’s issue of the newly refurbished St Oswalds Church in Finningley. This has been a huge project for the church and community and the results are fantastic. There is a Fun Day on Saturday 9th September to celebrate the end of the work and everyone is welcome to attend. Congratulations to everyone who has just received their exam results, I hope they enable you to follow your dreams. The deadline for the October issue will be Wednesday 13th September. The October Arrow will be delivered by the last weekend in September.

Community News Cantley with
Branton
The summer months have been quite hectic for members of Cantley with Branton WI. Our monthly meetings covered a variety of topics, including how to wear a sari and the adventures of a shepherdess. In June we also hosted a fashion show supported by London Connections of Parkgate, Rotherham. It was lovely to see so many people there and thanks to all those who attended, in whatever capacity, for making the evening a huge success. Our July meeting saw members rustling up a mouth-watering selection of cakes, as well as recycling a tempting array of handbags, scarves and jewellery, all of which were on sale at bargain prices to boost our funds. Again, thanks to all for their donations.
A Winning Team A great time was had on 19th August at this years Auckley Show by Lottie White and her grandma Joan Chambers. They were lucky to win a handsome number of rosettes between them as well as a shield each, after entering several classes. Lottie won the Best in show Childs Exhibit for her decorated cake and Joan won The Madge Wright Memorial Trophy for her patchwork cushion.
Our monthly meetings take place in Kilham Hall, Branton, DN3 3PF on the second Thursday of the month, starting at 7:00 pm. You are most welcome to drop in and join us. Easing us into autumn, author Richard Venables (QPM retd) winner of the 2017 The People’s Book Prize for his work, ”A Life in Death”, will be our guest speaker on Thursday 14th September and doors open at 6:45 pm. Celebration Weekend at Finningley Church So, after almost 5 months of work at Holy Trinity and St Oswald’s the reordering work inside is almost complete! It’s taken around 6 years to get to this point and we must say thank you for people’s amazing generosity, fundraising efforts, grants, and answers to prayer. We also need to say a huge thank you to the congregation at St Saviour’s, Auckley, who welcomed the Finningley folk with open arms as services were held together. As a result we will now be able to provide a building that is warm, has flexible seating, offers accessible toilets, has a good kitchen area and gives level access throughout. As the finishing line grows ever closer, so too does the sense of excitement, anticipation and thankfulness as people wait for the unveiling. So, with that unveiling in mind we would very much like to invite everyone to join us for the official opening, which takes place over the weekend of the 9th and 10th of September. On Saturday the 9th we are holding a family fun day between 12.00pm and 3.00pm with all sorts of exciting things for all ages. Then, on Sunday at 10.30am we have a special service of thanksgiving and dedication with the Bishop of Doncaster. Everyone is very welcome to either or both. Finningley Church has been part of the community for hundred’s of years. Throughout history the people of the day have made changes and additions to St Oswald’s to enable it to serve the community as effectively as possible. Citizens Advice North East Doncaster on hand to help with rollout of Universal Credit. Citizens Advice North East Doncaster is helping people get ready for Universal Credit as it rolls out in full across Doncaster. Universal Credit is a new benefit which helps people on a low income or not in work meet their living costs. It combines six benefits, including Housing Benefit and Working Tax Credit, into a single monthly payment. At the moment in Doncaster Universal Credit is only available to single jobseekers but from early in October 2017 parents, couples and people who can’t work because of their health who make a new claim will also receive it. Citizens Advice North East Doncaster is highlighting what changes are due to take effect, namely around how Universal Credit is paid, so that people can prepare before applying for the new benefit. The three changes Citizens Advice North East Doncaster says people need to be aware of are : Universal Credit payments are made in arrears once at the end of the month, rather than being paid every week. Payments will go straight into a claimant's bank account. This means people may need to set up their own standing orders for expenses like rent if it was paid directly to their landlord under the old Housing Benefit system. New Universal Credit applications, and any change in your circumstances, need to be made online. With people facing a 5 to 6 week wait for their first Universal Credit payment, Citizens Advice North East Doncaster is encouraging people to apply for an advance payment if they’re concerned about meeting their living costs in the meantime. Citizens Advice North East Doncaster has helped many people with a Universal Credit claim in the last year. The bulk of queries relate to people wanting to know how they make a claim and if they’re eligible to do so. They are now seeing rising numbers of people who are worried about how full rollout will affect them and their families.
Staffie Stories The reputation of Staffordshire Bull Terriers has suffered over recent years from overbreeding and negative press. The truth is that with love and good training they are extremely affectionate, intelligent and obedient dogs. Sadly many Staffies end up in the care of the RSPCA as a result of irresponsible ownership; they top the national league as the most rescued breed. Locally, the RSPCA South Yorkshire Animal Centre at Bawtry has ten staffies and staffie cross breeds, a mix of brindles and reds. Meet Louis a lovely friendly six-year-old boy who is looking for a new place to call home and his friends Stella and Jack. If you would like to meet Louis or any of our dogs, give the centre a call on 01302 719790. Visit the centre on the Great North Road, near Bawtry, DN10 6DE – open to the public six days a week from 11am – 4pm (closed Wednesdays). If you cannot provide a home for Louis or any of our other dogs, then maybe you can help support their stay at the centre by donating unwanted clothes for our charity shops? The RSPCA shops at High Street, Rotherham; Queen Mary’s Road, Rossington; and Field Road, Thorne, make a huge contribution to the Animal Centre’s running costs. Chairman’s Report Auckley Show 2017 From all our committee members I would like to first say a big thankyou to all who helped in any way to make this wonderful day happen. As a few commented on the Auckley Community Facebook, the Auckley Show Facebook, personal emails and from comments we received throughout the day we are lucky to live in a location with so much community spirit. This year was the most challenging to maintain our policy to make this a free admission free parking event. At the time of writing I can’t say if we broke even or lost money. I can say with almost certainty that we didn’t make any, I am happy with that because we just need to survive to make it happen next year. Like everything else the costs continue to rise I have never done this before but I feel I need to point out some of the main expenditure we have. The Marquee’s £6500, by the way did you sit down anywhere, that cost us £1.20 plus VAT for the chair and if you sat a table that was another £5. The banqueting roll, (paper table cloth and plastic clips to hold it on was extra) Public Liability Insurance, First Aid cover, security cover during the nights leading up to the show, did you spend a penny? Did you notice we had the four sets of steps to the toilets replaced, the previous set were well worn with age rickety and full of wood worm. Keeping the toilets clean and replenishing the 100 toilets rolls, hand soap and paper towel rolls all cost money. The additional easy access toilet we provided will now be a permanent feature much better than using the Pavilion. We dealt with rubbish in bins, did you deal with yours? We provided 33 bins, and probably 4 or 5 bin liners for each. They went into our skip which cost £250 plus VAT. Financial contributions were made to others to provide entertainment, the Disco Friday and Saturday nights, Doncaster Ukulele Club, Dixin Around Jazz, Armthorpe Elmfield Brass Band, Vinny Dean vocalist, Jade Cotton Stilt Walker and Fire breather and Mr Magic. Refreshment expenses were paid to the 26 Air Cadets and staff of 1053 Squadron based at Hill House School who were on duty dealing with traffic flow, what a terrific job they did under adverse weather conditions. The service they provide is second to none and I believe indispensable. Do you know they are the 4th largest unit in the north of England with over a 100 members spending their leisure time constructively? What a credit to young people South Yorkshire Police had our full support in dealing with inconsiderate parking by way of fixed penalty notices for obstruction. The Free Car Parking facility was well signposted. New for this year was the Auckley Show Ninja Warrior competition. This was a free to enter event that proved very popular, feedback from the Project Manager suggests this will return next year bigger and better. Everyone of all ages had lots of fun around the course. We are looking for a Financial Sponsor to support this in 2018. You may have seen I appealed for help on the Auckley Community web site on the lead up to the show, that fell on deaf ears and the few that organised the event were left exhausted, can you help for an hour next year to relieve the pressure? Fun Dog Show gets better every year with an added touch of a Dancing Dog performance that was just fantastic. Project Manager Cheryl said “I just want to thank everyone who supported the dog show. We raised £212 for TIA Rescue. The amazing people who brought their dogs despite the weather. Thankyou from the bottom of my heart, animal welfare is a passion of mine and every penny goes to the dogs being cared for. See you all next year - Cheryl

The ‘carbooters’ took advantage of the limited space available and were trading all day from 8am. We had record breaking numbers again with 760 exhibits entered into the Horticultural, Craft, Baking and Preserves and Children’s competitions. It is my opinion that this acts as a barometer to the level of Community Spirit we have, see the results of all winners. Can I invite you to take part next year and help us to reach our target of 1000 entries, it is free to enter? Can we thank all our sponsors and supporters and a mention to our local MP Caroline Flint who officially opened the show and took on the role of Auctioneer and raised for us over £200. May I ask that you think of your talents and how you could, in any way, contribute towards this wonderful community event? Maybe you could offer a sponsorship or donation. Could you help over the Show weekend or spend one evening a month on the friendly committee planning for next year? What about joining our 200 club the monthly £1 per month draw. We have our next meeting 7.30pm Wednesday 20th September in the Parish Centre Main Street Auckley. The Agenda as always is ‘Learning the lessons’ where we discuss all the positives and the negatives to improve and ‘fine tune’ for next year. All are welcome to put their views forward. We are aware of concerns over the pricing of kiddies rides and certain items of food and will discuss how to deal with the issues. Next year the date is set for Saturday 18th August 2018 and we can’t wait to get started planning for it. AUCKLEY PARISH COUNCIL September 2017 Newsletter Proposed Housing Development, Common Lane, Auckley Some residents have been circulated with a leaflet by the Strategic Land Group which is currently preparing an outline planning application to DMBC to develop an area of land south of Common Lane for up to 90 new homes. SLG say there will be a single point of access off Common Lane positioned just past existing properties. The site is categorised as a ‘defined village’ under Core Strategy Police CS2 and lies within Countryside Policy Area. To build 90 houses would lead to additional traffic on a village road – with no pavements provision which is primarily for farming vehicles. Services in the whole of the parish are already at capacity, and residential building is currently in progress within the parish with associated traffic concerns. Auckley Parish Council would not favour this proposal and will make appropriate observations when the application is ultimately submitted to DMBC. Anyone with concerns should write to: Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council, Department of Planning, Civic Office, Waterdale, Doncaster. DN1 3BU Auckley Parish Council meets on the second Wednesday of each month, apart from August, at the Auckley Parish Centre The next meeting is scheduled for the 13th September at 6.30 p.m. There may be an opportunity in the future to hold some meetings at the new Sixth Form College when it is established.
This gorgeous boy is Rocky, a three year old Border Collie cross. Rocky is a lovely, friendly boy- a typical energetic Collie, and we are looking for an active home for him where he will get plenty of exercise. He is ok with other dogs and has lived with young children, although he may be a bit too bouncy for tinies! Rocky is neutered, fully vaccinated and micro-chipped. September 2017 Newsletter Parish Council Meetings – New Starting Time of 6.30 p.m. Parish council meetings will now commence at 6.30 p.m. and members of the public are welcome to attend with up to thirty minutes available for public participation at the start of the meeting prior to formal business commencing. Update on New Outdoor Equipment at Kilham Lane Recreation Ground The plans for the new equipment have now been finalised and DMBC is arranging tenders to procure the supplier of the equipment. Due to unforeseen circumstances it has not been possible to take delivery of the items for the summer holiday period but all work should be completed before the end of autumn and may therefore cause some disruption to the use of the ground at October half-term. Due to comments made by Sport England in respect of the planning application for a Multi Use Games Area (MUGA), DMBC in consultation with the parish council has withdrawn the planning application with the intention of the application being resubmitted as and when funding becomes available. Provision of a Defibrillator Following discussions and the agreement of Kilham Hall Management Committee to contribute to the project the parish council has obtained costs and information on locating a defibrillator on the site of Kilham Hall Community Centre in order to give round the clock access. Parking on Grass Verges at Valley Drive Following planning consent being granted quotations are being sought for the cost of fencing and/or wooden posts to deter parking on the verges opposite the school particularly at the beginning and end of the school day. Unless costs are prohibitive it is hoped that the work will be undertaken in the near future. Parish Council’s New Website www.cantleywithbrantonparishcouncil.co.uk A new website has been commissioned with additional information about the parish which will be updated to reflect changes that take place. The picture currently displayed on the homepage will be replaced by a photograph of the Old Mill which a resident has kindly agreed to supply. If anyone has any old photographs of areas in the parish or any information that give information about the parish and its history please forward these to the Clerk at cwbpc@outlook.com for consideration by the parish council.
