Welcome to the September issue of The Branton & Auckley Arrow Goodbye summer of ‘19 and hello autumn! I hope you all had a great summer, spent with family and friends, energised and raring to go in September, well at least ready to go! The Auckley Show was a huge success again with a fabulous turnout. I have some photos in this months issue but the October issue will have results and a word from the Chair, Neil Woodward. Congratulations to everyone who took part in the organising of this year’s show and to everyone who supported the show. Here are a few of the scarecrows around the village, fab effort from everyone. Here has been a few ‘summer’ fires in both Branton and Auckley over the last few months so I have published some advice from South Yorkshire Fire Service as well as advice on how to protect your property from burglary from SY Police, I hope you find the information helpful. We also have a new police ‘drop In’ event organised in Branton on Monday 9th September at 6.30pm till 7.30pm at Kilham Hall Meeting Rooms, everyone is welcome to attend. The deadline for the October issue is Wednesday 18th September. The October issue will be distributed the last weekend in September.

Best Wishes

Branton Litter Pick The next village litter pick will be held on

Saturday 14th September (Ledger Day)

LEGER GROUP OF WOMEN’S INSTITUTES FASHION SHOW

Two residents, including myself, attended this session. The PCSO’s have visited the village on a number of occasions due to some minor anti social incidents. They have spoken to a number of older children and are maintaining a presence in the village in both marked and unmarked vehicles. If you see any anti social behaviour, the police asked that this is reported as soon as possible by calling 101. In an emergency, 999 should always be used. There was also a discussion regarding speeding vehicles on Whip Hill Top Lane, the police advised us of the latest speed checks they have carried out in the area to try to combat this problem. Another drop in meeting was organised for Thursday 22nd and an update will be provided next month. The next meeting will be held on

Monday 9th September at 6.30pm until 7.30pm Kilham Hall Meeting Rooms Everyone is welcome to attend

On Thursday 19 September The Leger Group of Women’s Institutes will be holding a fashion show at Auckley Parish Centre, Main St, Auckley, Doncaster DN9 3HW. Doors open at 7pm and the event begins at 7:30 pm. Tickets cost £4 in advance or £5 on the door.

Community News Preventing burglary Homes with no security measures in place are five times more likely to be burgled than those with simple security measures. Good window locks and strong deadlocks can make a big difference. Taking just a few steps can make a big difference in keeping your home safe from burglary. There are a few tips below. • Lock your doors and windows every time you leave the house, even when you're just out in the garden, remembering to double-lock UPVC doors (lift handle and turn key) • Hide all keys, including car keys, out of sight and away from the letterbox (remember a device could be used to hook keys through a letterbox) • Install a visual burglar alarm and outside lighting • Get a trusted neighbour to keep an eye on your property • Leave radios or lights in your house on a timer to make the property appear occupied • Make sure the fences around your garden are in good condition • Secure bikes at home by locking them to an immoveable object inside a locked shed/garage • Keep ladders and tools stored away; don't leave them outside where they could be used to break into your home • Ensure side gates are locked to prevent access to the rear of the property • Improve natural surveillance at the front of your property i.e. trim high hedges • Mark your property with postcode and house number and register your property for free with Immobilise • Consider joining or forming a Neighbourhood Watch scheme • Remove valuables from view of ground floor windows • Store any high value items (i.e. jewellery, passports) in a properly secured safe or bank vault

Oh what a show!

What a gift it is to have this amazing show on our doorstep, organised by volunteers every year. The weather certainly helped to make the 2019 Auckley Show a fabulous day out for everyone. The committee, led by Neil Woodward, work all year round to make sure the event is as entertaining as ever however, as we all know, the only thing they can’t control is the weather and Friday’s weather would have been a disaster for the show. So thank goodness the sun shone brightly, and we all had a wonderful day. Thank you to everyone who was involved in this fantastic show and to everyone who supported it, either by taking part in competitions or just turning up for a beer and some delicious food!

The Avengers—1st Prize for the Scarecrow competition

We have some results from the Scarecrow competition, 1st Auckley Avengers 2nd Mad Hatters Tea Party (p3) 3rd Strongbow Steve All the scarecrows are fabulous, well done to everyone who took part. We will have all the results in the October issue, the committee are taken a well earned rest so we will have more photos and information from them in October.

Well, here we are into September already and we do hope you all enjoyed the summer whether at home or away. We are so grateful to everyone who has raised money on our behalf this past month. The Shoe Room in Priory Walk raised £1,135 which really took us by surprise! Stratstone BMW on Wheatley Hall Road held a coffee morning and afternoon tea at their showroom and made £194. Janine sent us photos of the food which made our mouth water. Space doesn’t allow us to mention everyone here who donated, but please check out our website for more information. Are you planning on taking part in one of the marathon or half marathon races (such as the Great North Run on 8th September) or any other sporting events? Or are you simply wanting to organise an event on our behalf? Please do get in touch with us as we can supply you with T-shirts, etc., and can advertise your event on our website. We are making preparations for our annual Memory Tree event in the Frenchgate Centre. This year it will be from Monday, 25th November until Friday, 20th December. We have some lovely new items which you can buy in memory of loved ones and will have more information for you in the next issues. Don’t forget, we are always in need of volunteers and you will be made very welcome. Our contact details are: 22 Wood Street, Doncaster DN1 3LW (entrance by the side of Kerry Gough Florists), second floor (lift available), Room 209. Tel. 01302 325029. Email: info@dcdt.co.uk. Website: dcdt.co.uk. It doesn’t matter how small your donation, it all goes towards the biopsy machine for Doncaster Royal Infirmary. Our charity has always believed that local money should support local people.

News From Auckley School

It’s been a busy term in Year 6! We’ve completed SATs, gone on a residential AND put together a production! The children did themselves, and us, proud during SATs week as they approached the tests with mature and resilient attitudes. Following the tests, the children had a well-deserved break at Hatfield Water Park where they impressed us with their bravery when approaching the crate stack, climbing walls and kayaking. It was a pleasure to see the children relax and enjoy themselves – even if the adults got no sleep! After returning to school, the children went ‘full steam ahead’ and threw themselves into our production of ‘Olivia’. They have blown us away with their performances and singing and this may well be one of the most memorable performances yet. As the song stated, ‘We had a good time, didn’t we?’ Which I think sums up the year perfectly. It’s been a fantastic year filled with hard work, laughs and smiles and all of the children will be greatly missed by all here at Auckley School.

Nursery have had a fantastic year and have learnt so much. To finish off a great year, we all went to The Deep. The children saw a swordfish, a diver and many more beautiful fish. After a walk around The Deep, we had a workshop session. In this workshop session we learnt a story about a small fish in the big ocean and the obstacles that he faces due to the actions of humans. This was very interesting and the children loved it. All of the children were fantastic and it was a great day had by all. Thank you to all of the Nursery children and their parents for a fun-filled year.

Year 4 Summer What a year it has been! We learnt all about The Victorians, Coasts and Our Local Area. We have also had some amazing and memorable experiences: including a visit to The National Coal Mining Museum in September to learn all about Victorian Child Mining, numerous sporting outings and finally, our residential visit to Austerfield Study Centre. We have ended this amazing year with our latest topic, ‘Our Local Area’. The whole class have enjoyed learning about the history of Doncaster Sheffield Airport as well as The Mallard and Flying Scotsman. On the 3rd, 4th and 5th of June, we visited Austerfield Study Centre for our 2 night residential visit. During the visit, we were involved in den building, orienteering, fire building and pond dipping. What a fantastic and unforgettable residential visit! We have also been involved in some sporting competitions including hockey and cricket. We are all now looking forward to a summer break, before coming back in September as Year 5.

This term in Year 2

we have been learning all about Africa. We have been able to find out a great deal about African animals, the geography of Africa and we have really enjoyed comparing life in Kenya to life in Auckley. We were really surprised about the differences of our daily lives. In Science, we have been learning a lot about plants and animals in their habitats. On our visit to Austerfield Study Centre, we were able to go pond dipping where we discovered many different minibeasts in their habitats. Some of us even managed to catch a fish and a water scorpion which was very exciting! We were then lucky enough to hold some rare animals when we visited the Animal House. We very much loved the millipede crawling up our arms and getting to hold the corn snake! More from Auckley School next month...

It has been a really busy and fun end of term for our Year 6 children as they celebrated the end of their journey at Branton St.Wilfrid’s. Lots of fabulous memories were made as they enjoyed their fun-filled party at the Earl, showcased their amazing singing and dancing talents as they performed their play to parents and reflected on their many memories at Branton St. Wilfrid’s during the end of year Mass in church. This wonderful group of children have played a vital role in the school over the last 7 years and they will certainly be missed by the staff and children. We wish them all success and happiness in their chosen secondary school as they begin this next chapter in their life.

Doncaster Rambler’s

A Local walk from Fishlake We gathered in the sunshine for what is the sixteenth Doncaster Ramblers short local Thursday walk. In today’s group of nine we were pleased to welcome two new comers. Our guide Stuart, a local lad, had planned this circular walk from Fishlake, taking in Hangsman Hill, Fosterhouses a few cows, and a converted windmill, to come in at about five miles. Fishlake has a history going back to Viking times, and it is said monks from Linisfarne, travelling up the river Don, disembarked with the body of St Cuthbert, and stayed overnight in the village. And it is along the raised bank of the river, that we began today’s walk. Stuart explained parts of the river had been diverted to increase flow leaving areas of flooded land now occupied by cows. “don’t worry, they are friendly and docile” Stuart reassured us as a group of heifers blocked our path. A bit of clapping soon dispersed the beasts. We continued for 1.7miles until a left turn took us along the Thorne Round Walk footpath, now well overgrown, wet and muddy. Always a challenge at the best of times, so rather than continue Stuart had planned a northern loop on more sensible metalised paths and tarmac tracks, where the only hazard was a gigantic agricultural vehicle, and a frisky mare . Thanks to Stuart’s intimate knowledge of the area, he was able to guide us along the network of highways and byways while allowing us to enjoying the views and all to soon we were back at Fishlake. We live such busy lives, so these short two hour walks are ideal for getting out into the fresh air, chatting with old and new friends, and exploring parts of Doncaster, we didn’t know existed. For more information about the Doncaster Ramblers and future activity please visit our Home Page and download full copy of our walk programme https://www.doncasterramblers.org.uk/walks/walks-programme-printed-version.html And follow us on Facebook https:// www.facebook.com/doncasterramblers/ where GPS Maps of many of our past walks can also be found.

DANUM PROBUS CLUB Danum Probus Club is an organisation for men who have retired or are semi-retired from their profession, business or other employment who want to maintain a social network with others who have similar interests. The Club meets on the first and third Mondays of the month at Town Moor Golf Club, Bawtry Road, Belle Vue, Doncaster at 10am. At this meeting we have a speaker, their subjects covering a wide variety of interests, (see www.probusonline.org/danum for the ongoing programme). Ladies and guests are invited to the Club’s Spring, Autumn and Bowling Lunches and also to the Annual holiday which is usually in late June or thereabouts. Members also have their own lunches in mid summer and December. In the summer months the Crown Green Bowling Section play on the Armthorpe Community Centre greens. The second meeting in July was the Members’ Lunch which took place at the golf club. Members spent a pleasant three hours eating a splendid lunch and conversing amongst each other. Then on 5 August our guest speaker was David Townend (not Tracey Bull as advertised) whose subject was “The Yorkshire Air Ambulance”. David, who is is a volunteer with YAA, took us through its history, starting in 2000 with one second hand Russian helicopter to the present day with the purpose built headquarters at Nostell Priory and two new Airbus H145 helicopters. The helicopters are piloted by professional helicopter pilots and the para-medics are secondees from the Yorkshire Ambulance Service. The event which really brought the Yorkshire Air Ambulance to the public’s attention was its transfer of Richard Hamilton to hospital after his near fatal crash at Elvington in 2008. There are now on average four calls a day for the YAA, but during the Grand Departe of the Tour de France it went up to about forty a day. After the talk David answered a series of questions, and everyone present enjoyed this informative and thought provoking presentation. On 2 September Tony Cowley’s subject is “Vintage Motor Cycles” and on 16 September Philip Caine will travel from “Barrow to Baghdad and Back”. Any interested men who would like to come to these meeting as a visitor to see what we do, with a view to joining if you like us, please call either George Kirk (07808191211) or Geoff Firth (01302 849734) for more information or come to a meeting and introduce yourself to the President or Secretary at the front table.

Bruce’s happy tail… Bruce, the American Bulldog, had a tough start in life, until he was rescued by the Doncaster, Rotherham and District Branch of the RSPCA. Originally brought to the animal centre by an inspector as part of a welfare case, Bruce’s skin was in a terrible state. He was a lovely, affectionate and playful dog who loved people, long strolls in the paddock and playing with balls – he could certainly give Lionel Messi a run for his money! Despite being in such discomfort with his skin condition, he was a gentle and affectionate dog. After waiting for almost a year, he finally got a lucky break. A family arrived at the Animal Centre and fell in love with Bruce and offered him the forever home he deserved. Bruce is just one story – 890 animals were rehomed from the RSPCA South Yorkshire Animal Centre last year. The Branch’s mission is to rehabilitate and re-home vulnerable animals and this work relies on kind donations from the public and local businesses. Bruce’s story took place because of the support received from a variety of sources. The four RSPCA shops are a vital source of income (Maltby, Bawtry, Rossington and Thorne), and raise awareness of the Centre. Every purchase and donation helps the Branch to continue vital rehabilitation and rehoming work. Other ways to help include volunteering some of your time or sponsoring rescue animals through the Safe Haven programme. At the Animal Centre there is a pet supplies store. The Branch also provides a pet cremation service and a memorial garden for your beloved pets.
