Life is slowly moving towards a new normal. The wearing of masks has created a whole new stress before we leave home! Keys check Purse/wallet check Mask??? Where’s my mask? I’m sure you will agree, it’s a small price to pay to help work, life and play continue. It’s good to see community centres, gyms, libraries and other leisure facilities, opening again. Lets hope and pray that science produces a vaccine very soon and schools open as planned in September. The ‘Eat out to Help out’ scheme in August has proved a successful initiative to many local pubs and restaurants. I hope it has introduced new customers for the future of these establishments. I have visited a few of our local pubs, cafes/bistros over the month of August and felt safe and comfortable in them all. The deadline for the October issue is Wednesday 16th September. The October issue will be distributed the weekend commencing 25th September. Keep safe everyone. Community News Branton Litter Pickers
On Saturday 1st August, 18 local residents took part in the latest Branton Litter Pick, again concentrating on the exit and entry points of the village and Doncaster Road. Lockdown has had a significant impact on the amount of rubbish that has been left as this was the best litter pick so far, we only collected 26 bags of rubbish. The March litter pick produced 60 bags in contrast! I know not everyone can make the event but still do their bit when out on walks, thank you, this certainly helps to keep the village looking tidy. It was great to welcome new faces and lovely to catch up with the regulars. Thanks to everyone who turned up on the day. The next litter pick will be around November so watch out for the next date. Any help at all is welcome and we are normally finished by Lunch time. For more information, please email michelle@arrowpublications.co.uk or Offers free advertising to all local cwbpc@outlook.com

Organisers of these meetings will be in touch with members once activities can be resumed. Pre school and parent and toddlers groups are back in September. Please contact the coordinators for further details if you have any questions or concerns. As we all now know, Covid 19 can change the things we do and how we do them rapidly, so please keep in touch with the latest advice by following the government website

Auckley Show 200 plus club update. S.O.S. Support Our Show We are continuing with our monthly draw, a way in which everyone has an opportunity to support the show. The current situation restricts the way in which we can call and collect payments that are due for renewal. The last couple of months we have been sending our supporters a letter with suggestions on how best to renew. We thank you for your continued support. Any new members can apply on line through our website. www.auckley.show.co.uk or give me a call to arrange 01302 770818. We are keeping our discounted price at £10 for twelve months with a chance of winning £100 each month. It's really sad news we had to cancel 2020. However, plans are well underway for next year which will be Saturday 21st August 2021. With your support we’ll make it the best ever annual community event. Winner of the August draw number 729 Barry Winfield wins £100. Please note you don’t have to live in Auckley to help support our show. Neil Woodward, Chairman Auckley Show

Doncaster Rambler’s Tickhill Inner Circle This is the first walk for several months as we, at least temporarily, ease out of lockdown. When groups of six were allowed to walk a short, local walks programme was developed, with almost 30 walks arranged, taking us into October. Today, a bright and blustery day saw five of us meeting at The Buttercross in Tickhill. We walked along Westgate, around Mill Pond and into Water Lane until we crossed the footbridge over the stream at the far end of Castle Fields. Turning immediately right, and after admiring the kissing gate installed by Ramblers a few years ago (see photo on the left of it being installed - this is a coincidence!) which replaced a very unsafe stile, we crossed a field which the farmer never reinstates after ploughing. Crossing a stile we followed a high hedge around to another stile and then forward towards some farm buildings and thence to the footpath alongside the A1 (M) to reach Sunderland Street, one of the two routes across the wet land that existed from about 500AD until it was drained by Thomas Tofield in the late 17th century. We passed under the motorway bridge and turned immediately left along Paper Mill Lane for 200 metres before turning right onto a footpath by the tallest signpost in the area. We followed this path, which took us to the River Torne, which we crossed, posing for the obligatory photo on the bridge. We then followed the Torne on the right bank until we reached Sheepwash Lane. After a short discussion we all agreed to extend the walk, increasing it from the original 4.75 miles to 5.5 miles, by contining to follow the Torne in a big arc on Tickhill Low Common and back onto Sheepwash Lane. This took us onto Common Lane, over, rather than under, the A1(M) and back to The Buttercross. We hope everyone is making the most of the beautiful weather we’ve had and have been able to create lots of precious memories with their families. It certainly has been a very different summer for most of us but we hope you have all still been able to have quality and fun time together. We cannot wait to welcome our families back to St. Wilfrid’s in September and continue with our exciting curriculum that we have planned to engage and enthuse our wonderful children again. Take care everyone and see you soon. Branton St. Wilfrid’s Team
Hayfield School Year 7 and 11 are back to school on Wednesday 2nd September at 8.35am and all other year groups are back on Thursday 3rd September.
School transport will be running and the school is aware that the Local Authority is working with providers to resolve any concerns from September. The government is asking schools to encourage parents to find alternative methods of getting their children to and from school. If students must travel on the bus then they must follow the rules laid down by the bus company e.g. wear a mask. At the time of going to print (14th Aug 2020) there was no requirement for students to wear face masks in school.
Temporary Road Closure in Auckley

School Lane (30 metres from the junction in a northerly direction) will close until 5th October. The closures are necessary to enable the installation of a new pedestrian splitter island and traffic control lights. Sweet rescue ‘Sugar’ came to RSPCA Doncaster, Rotherham and District Branch after she was found straying at the back of a row of shops in Doncaster. Clearly in distress and a lot of pain, Sugar had been suffering with a large open wound and significant swelling on her front leg. Her bones were exposed. The vet determined that her injuries were most likely due to the result of a nasty dog bite that had been ignored and become severely infected. To give Sugar the best chance at survival it was thought she might have to lose her leg. However, as operation day approached, the vet was astounded by the improvement the wound had made resulting in a new plan – flush and clean the wound with the help of some extra medication. Just a few weeks later and with a lot of care and attention from the team, the wound was beginning to close. Since then, she has slowly been learning to use her leg again and building confidence. Sugar was found just in time before the infection had a chance to take over her whole body. She has now found her forever home where she can continue her recovery whilst receiving the love and care she deserves. Animals like Sugar need the local RSPCA. There are many ways to help with rehoming and rehabilitating animals including volunteering, leaving a legacy, donating cash or goods or sponsoring through the Safe Haven programme. There are RSPCA charity shops at Bawtry, Maltby, Rossington and Thorne as well as an eBay shop. At the Animal Centre, there is a pet supplies store on site for all your requirements. The local RSPCA also provides a pet cremation service and a memorial garden for your beloved pets. To donate £5, text ‘RSPCADRB’ to 70085.

A new campaign has been launched in Doncaster to encourage young people that using the psychoactive drug nitrous oxide – also known as laughing gas or NOs – is no laughing matter. The campaign, aimed at young people aged 16-24, has been launched after an increase in the amount of empty NOs canisters that have been found across the borough. It encourages anyone using NOs to seek help via Project 3 Young People’s Health and Well-being Service or Aspire Drug and Alcohol Services. Anyone taking in too much nitrous oxide risks falling unconscious or suffocating from a lack of oxygen. Some people have died due to using the substance. Naomi Handley-Ward, who works at Project 3, run by Rotherham Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust (RDaSH) said: “I’d encourage parents to learn the symptoms of solvent abuse. They can appear a lot like alcohol use and might include: Slurred speech. Dilated pupils. Euphoria and excitement. Difficulty with coordination. Feeling drowsy, dizzy or light-headed. Feeling nauseated and not interested in eating. ‘Drunken’, withdrawn, irritable or inattentive behaviour. Hallucinations and/or delusions. “Other physical signs might include a chemical smell, runny nose, watery eyes, irritation of the throat and rashes or spots around the nose and mouth,” added Naomi. “However, none of these signs are definitive – they may be caused by other behaviours or illnesses. The best way to find out if someone has taken them, is to talk with them and listen to what they have to say. “It’s important to stay calm and open-minded when you talk to your child about drugs,” she added. Cllr Nigel Ball, Doncaster Council Cabinet Member for Public Health, Leisure and Culture, said: “Data shows that the age group who tend to use nitrous oxide are aged between 16 and 24. I’d encourage parents and guardians to think about how they will react if their child says he or she has tried drugs. You don’t want to react in a way that shuts down the conversation. Also remember, help is always at hand from Doncaster’s expert staff at Project 3 or Aspire.” Cllr Ball also stressed: “If you are a young person and you or your friend becomes unwell please call 999 immediately.” Cllr Christopher McGuinness, Doncaster Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities, Voluntary Sector and the Environment, added: “You may see the small silver canisters strewn around in the community. I’d encourage young people to rethink this habit and get help. They are putting their lives at risk every time they inhale this gas.” For more information, please visit www.talktofrank.com or contact Project 3 by calling 01302 640032. Young people can also seek help via Project 3’s e-clinic. To do this they need to download RDaSH’s e-Clinic 11-19 app, making it easy to have a conversation with a professional. The campaign is being jointly run by Doncaster Public Health, RDaSH, Aspire Drug and Alcohol Service and South Yorkshire Police.

DANUM PROBUS CLUB danum probus.co.uk Danum Probus Club is an organisation for men who have retired or are semi-retired from their profession, business or other employment who want to maintain a social network with others who have similar interests. Because of the Covid19 lockdown we are not able to meet at present. In normal times Danum Probus Club meets on the first and third Mondays of the month at Town Moor Golf Club, Bawtry Road, Belle Vue, Doncaster starting at 10 am. At this meeting we have a speaker whose subjects cover a wide variety of interests, the programme can be found on our website, www.danumprobus.co.uk. Ladies and guests are invited to the Club’s Spring and Autumn Lunches and also to the annual holiday which is usually in early June or thereabouts. Members also have their own lunches in mid summer and December. In the summer months the Crown Green Bowling Section play on the Armthorpe Community Centre greens. The starting date for regular meeting has been moved back to Monday 5 October, so the two meetings scheduled for September have been cancelled. The current restriction on the number of people who may use the golf club meeting room at the same time means that it is too small for our events, even if fewer than the usual number of members attend. The committee is looking at the viability of using an alternative venue on a temporary basis if the restrictions on the golf club are not eased in the coming months. The Annual Autumn Ladies and Guests Lunch at Ye Olde Bell scheduled for 22 October will now not take place. It may be moved to a date before Christmas if circumstances allow. Crown Green Bowling has begun on a restricted basis at Armthorpe. When we restart, we invite any men who would like to come to these meetings as a visitor to see what we do, with a view to joining if you like us, to call either George Kirk (07808191211) or Geoff Firth (01302 849734) for more information or come to a meeting and introduce yourself to the President or Secretary at the front table. Information on when we will restart will be published in this magazine and also on the website (danumprobus.co.uk).
