Welcome to the November issue of The Branton & Auckley Arrow What a fabulous 2018 we have had with regards to the weather! It’s late October and I am looking out of my window at a beautiful blue sky and a sunny, warm morning. Climate change or just chance… who knows? I am hoping it’s just chance, it has been a treat unlikely to be repeated for some time. I asked last month for information on any outside defibrillators in our villages. I have published the findings and it looks like we only have 3 in the whole of Branton, Auckley, Finningley and Blaxton. If you are aware of any that are housed in public places, let me know and I will provide a more comprehensive list in the next Arrow. Cantley with Branton Parish Council need feedback from residents of the parish on plans for a Multi Use Games Area at Kilham Recreation Ground. If you have any views on this matter, please forward them to Julia Staniforth cwbpc@outlook.com before Wednesday 7th November. The deadline for the December issue of the Branton and Auckley Arrow is Wednesday 14th November. The December issue will be delivered the last weekend in November. Best Wishes Michelle Sidebottom

Did I hear you say 6000 bulbs? On Saturday 13th October at 11am, many locals gathered at Sianne’s Butterfly Trail at Kilham Hall for a spot of gardening and bulb planting. Over several hours, volunteers of all ages helped Sarah plant a whopping, back breaking 6000 bulbs! The weather was kind and although windy, very warm and the rain stayed at bay. Sunday saw a huge downpour so those lovely bulbs will have had a very good start. We are all now looking forward to the spring to see the benefit of our work. A huge thank you to everyone who turned up and helped us on the day. On Saturday whilst planting bulbs, we became aware of a young swan who was clearly injured. The swan sat and observed the comings and goings at the park until the RSPCA turned up to rescue it. The lady from the RSPCA who rescued the swan did a brilliant job, securing the frightened bird safely with no dramas. The crowd cheered gratefully as the bird was taken away to safety and is hopefully now on the mend.

Butterfly information board designed by Sarah and kindly funded by Auckley PC and the Butterfly Conservation Trust.

Community News Dog training – rain or shine! Thanks to a generous grant from Support Adoption For Pets, the local RSPCA Animal Centre can offer dog training and behavioural support all year round in all weathers. The new canopy completes a big investment in training facilities at the South Yorkshire Animal Centre, Bawtry. Over the summer, the Doncaster, Rotherham and District RSPCA Branch held a very successful six-week training programme open to the public. Now sessions can be held rain or shine. Support Adoption For Pets – a charity established by Pets at Home – has been very supportive of the work of the RSPCA Centre to rehabilitate dogs rescued from cruelty or neglect. Laura Messenger, Grant Funding Coordinator at Support Adoption For Pets, said: “It is a real privilege to help an organisation that works so hard to care for and re-home pets in need. They are doing a superb job, and the effort the Rescue Centre puts in is an inspiration.” There are many ways to help the Animal Centre’s mission to rehome and rehabilitate animals. You can volunteer, donate cash or goods, sponsor an animal pen through Safe Haven and support events. There are charity shops at Bawtry, Rotherham, Rossington and Thorne and now an eBay shop. The Animal Centre has a pet shop on site for all your requirements, and provides a pet cremation service and a memorial garden for your beloved pets. – find out more at www.rspcadoncasterrotherham.org.uk

We’re 1 year old Amy, Michelle & team are proud to be turning one this month. A year ago they started a baby and toddler group in Branton at Kilham Hall and it’s gone from strength to strength. ‘We have seen many new babies & new mummy's, daddy’s, and Grandparents walk through the door not knowing a single person and leave having made new friends for themselves and baby. This is the very reason we work hard to make it the lovely friendly group it is. For further information please visit

News from Branton St Wilfrid’s Church of England Primary School Year 1 have started the year with their topic “Bright Lights, Big City” and have been learning about London. Dexter Clark - This year I have really enjoyed art and looking at the pictures of London. My favourite building is Big Ben. I liked painting the background with the blue for the sky and the river. Lucy Sutton - I have liked writing instructions about a tour around London for Marley the Meerkat. I enjoyed the London open top bus tour in class. It was fun getting a ticket and lining up to find a seat. I liked looking at the pictures of the famous buildings in London. Year 4’s topic this term is “Chocolate”. Below are some pictures of them taking part in the very serious business of tasting different kinds of chocolate and scoring each one to find out which is the most popular. After half term they will be visiting York Chocolate Experience where they will find out more about the history of chocolate and also the great Yorkshire tradition of sweet making. Year 5 have begun the school year studying the Tudors. They had a fantastic day exploring Gainsborough Old Hall. We had the opportunity to learn about how a Tudor kitchen prepared a banquet before dressing up in Tudor clothing and reenacting our very own banquet, complete with King Henry, Queen Katherine, guards, jesters, musicians, and a host of kitchen staff to serve the food. It was great fun topped off with a spot of Tudor dancing! After lunch we explored the bedrooms and climbed to the top of the Tower where the view was amazing. We learnt so much about the Tudors and are really excited for our topic this term.

DONCASTER METROPOLITAN BOROUGH COUNCIL - DIOCESE OF SHEFFIELD

Branton St Wilfrid’s Church of England Primary School Is your child due to start full time school in September 2019? Open Days Monday 3rd December 9.00am—10.00am Friday 7th December 2.00pm to 3.00pm If your child was born between 1st September 2014 and 31st August 2015 it will soon be time to apply for their primary school place. Come and join our Open Day events to see what our lovely village school has to offer. This will give you an opportunity to look around the school, ask questions and find out more about our exciting and varied curriculum.

If you would like to know more please telephone the office on 01302 537344 or email admin@st-wilfrids.doncaster.sch.uk. Follow us on Twitter @BrantonLearners On Tuesday 11th September, our class visited Perlethorpe so we could experience a day in the life of a Victorian child at school. To start the utterly fabulous day, the extremely strict Victorian-style teacher greeted us at the gates, where we got off the coach and listened to him give us an introduction. We learnt that the teachers expected more of the boys: apparently they were more likely to get a better career!!! As soon as we walked in, our Victorian teacher (Mr Rider) checked our hands and teeth to check if they were clean enough!! I certainly would not like to be a Victorian child!! In a Victorian school, they learnt the three R’s- reading, writing and arithmetic. For our first lesson, we read a poem that was written in Victorian times, it was called the Blacksmith’s Village. Before lunch, we did Victorian P.E, which was called drill. After lunch, we visited a Victorian church and played a game called ‘search the church’ where we had to find different shapes and photographs and mark on the map where we found them- it was extremely interesting and was a lot of fun! The last thing that we did before we sadly had to leave, was walk over to Thoresby Hall, where the lady and lord of the manor used to live. As you can tell, my classmates and I really enjoyed the trip and would love to go again! Hannah Marshall
