Welcome to the May issue of

The Branton & Auckley Arrow. As the Arrow goes to print, we are basking in heat not seen in April since 1949. What a treat, let’s hope it continues! Wow, I am thinking about how quickly time goes by as we approach the Summer then realise, the last Tour De Yorkshire was 2 years ago! We lined up on Bawtry Road and watched the men race past. It was really exciting and I am looking forward to walking to Auckley to see the race again in May. Be aware of the road closures, we have details in this month’s Arrow. Auckley did a great job last month, cleaning up litter and I know a few people in Branton have mentioned doing something similar, if you would like to get involved, please let me know. Doncaster Road as well as the bridge is pretty bad as lots of cars throw their litter as they pass. Planting for Sianne’s Butterfly trail at Kilham Hall in Branton should be complete by the beginning of May, weather permitting. Can you remind young people to avoid walking over the area to give the seeds and plants a chance to get established. Thank you.

The deadline for the June issue will be Wednesday 16th May. The June Arrow will be delivered by the last weekend in May.

Best Wishes Michelle Sidebottom Tel: 01302 534256 / 07795 387937 email: michelle@arrowpublications.co.uk

Community News Tour De Yorkshire comes to Doncaster

Doncaster is set to host the finish of Stage 1 of the 2018 Tour de Yorkshire cycle race on Thursday 3 May. We will see the finishes of the first stage of both the women’s and men’s races on Bennetthorpe in the town centre as in 2016. The women’s race is expected to finish around lunchtime and the men’s race about 6.30pm. Both races will follow a similar format to last time and be contested by some of the top cyclists in the world including potentially Mark Cavendish, holder of 30 Tour de France stage wins. The 2016 event attracted about 50,000 spectators along the Doncaster route with over 5,000 people attending the stage finishes on Bennetthorpe. This year’s event will be televised live to a growing worldwide audience and gain extensive coverage in the media and online. Full route can be found on the TDY website letour.yorkshire.com/ The race will travel along both the B1395 and Hurst Lane. To manage the race safely and enable the passage of the riders the route will be managed under a traffic order allowing a rolling road block and parking restrictions along the route. DMBC are working hard to minimise impact but expect as in 2016 the roads will be closed approximately 30 minutes prior to the riders arriving and for 30 minutes after the riders have passed. This will mean no access will be available via the B1395 and Hurst Lane for this period before and after the race has passed the following points at the specified times below on the 3rd May Parking restrictions will be in place for the duration of the day to avoid cars impeding on the route during the races. We hope you understand that will help deliver a successful event and keep any disruption to a minimum. In the meantime, further information about the Tour de Yorkshire is available on the following web sites: letour.yorkshire.com/ www.doncaster.gov.uk/TDY

Community News Kilham Hall's Tuesday Coffee Club held its Easter Coffee Morning on the 27th March and was very well attended in spite of (or maybe because of) the wet, rainy morning outside. Hot Cross Buns were served with the usual refreshments and the competition for the best decorated egg proved as popular as ever with an array of exceptionally creative entries. Yvonne Woodcock joined us once again, as our annual competition judge, and said that each year the decision became ever more difficult before announcing this year's winner to be our long serving member Anne with her entry "Rest for the Egghausted". Members enjoyed the usual Bingo, served up by Jean with her witty number calling, Christine's monologue, Glenys' Quiz and finally the Easter Raffle.

Sheila Smith

Kilham Hall Management Committee say a fond farewell to Sheila Smith who has been a member since Kilham Hall opened in 2009. Sheila will be missed from the committee and is thanked for all her hard work, support and commitment over the years. We are pleased to say that Sheila will continue to help out at our Coffee mornings so will still be around.

THE AUCKLEY TIMES Spring 2018

Reception

This term we have been working very hard in Reception. Our topic has been ‘Dinosaurs’ and we have learnt so many dino facts! We even made our own dinosaur bones and fossils! We have also taken part in the school science week which involved taking part in different science experiments. We rescued a Lego family from ice by finding the quickest ways to melt the ice and we made paper blow planes which we tested outside. On the last day, we chose our own experiment which was the Skittles experiment. We wanted to see what would happen if you put hot and cold water on a plate with skittles. Both the hot and cold water ‘melted’ the colour off the skittles onto the plate. It was really fun! We even got to try one!

Year 2 Year 2 have had a busy and exciting term. In the first half term we went to Leeds Thackray Medical Museum to learn all about Florence Nightingale. We had lots of different activities to do when we arrived. One of the jobs was a bit smelly! We had to organise objects by how clean or dirty they were. Some of them smelt horrible! Then the girls got to dress up as nurses and the boys were porters. The porters had to carry all of the equipment with them. Everyone had a job to do to improve ‘Scutari hospital’. We had to clean the hospital, make a bed, look after an injured soldier and chase away a rat! The lady who played Florence Nightingale was absolutely fantastic and we learnt so much! We had an amazing time and we really enjoyed exploring the museum and finding out about the history of medicine. We have thoroughly enjoyed our topic this term and we are excited about our next topic which is ‘Africa’.

Year 4 Raiders and Traders

This term Year 4 have been learning all about the Vikings. We began the topic by visiting The Jorvik Centre and The Digg, in York. We got the opportunity to look at excavated Viking houses that were found when they built the Jorvik centre. Additionally, we handled real artefacts from the Viking period that were discovered in York. We travelled through a replica Viking village on an amazing ride. This gave us the opportunity to discover what every day Viking life was like. We saw Viking houses, boats and we smelt a Viking toilet! At The Digg, we examined a range of replica weapons from the Viking age, including swords, shields and spears. Then, we found how the Vikings used them in battle, including in their raids on Lindisfarne. This gave us the opportunity to find out how it felt to be in a Viking battle; the monks must have been terrified! For homework this term, the class had to make something to do with our topic. These creations ranged from models of Viking ships and hats, made from different materials, to pictures, PowerPoints and even a stop motion animation. All of the wonderful work is on display in the classroom and some of it was shown in an assembly. Year 4 have really enjoyed learning about the Vikings this term and we are looking forward to our next topic which is Fair Trade.

Year 5 What a term it has been! Our topic this term has been ‘Stargazers’ and we have learnt all about our solar system and the forces which act upon it. Recently, we had an amazing trip to the National Space Centre in Leicester. Here we learnt all about; the different planets, the universe, space travel and we even had chance to see a movie in The Sir Patrick Moore planetarium. We have also learnt about how to compare locations in The Americas and Europe based on their Human and Physical geographical features. In English, we have written poems, stories and reports and in maths we have learnt all about fractions and measures. It has been a very busy term and we are looking forward to our exciting summer term which includes our residential visit.

Doncaster Rambler’s Baslow Bakewell Birthday Bash! As Lee welcomed us and introduced his walk at 10 am the rain miraculously stopped for the rest of the day. This was just reward for the 20 of us who had ignored the forecast, dismissed the leaden skies, driven through driving rain and pulled on our over-trousers, and erected unbrellas in anticipation of a damp walk. We were soon on our way, heading south on the Derwent Valley Heritage Way, negotiating a turnstile at the beginning , then passing the now renovated front elevation of Chatsworth House, and very nice it looks too, before crossing the bridge and heading west, towards the pretty village of Edensor crossing the B6012 on route. Edensor was originally located closer to the river Derwent, but in 1838 William Cavendish 6th Duke of Devonshire had it moved to the present location. Notably one family refused to move, and that building still stands on the original spot! From Edensor the route takes a south westerly direction and up the first significant hill to our coffee stop at the edge of New Piece Wood, overlooking Chatsworth. We then followed the footpath west, through Manners Wood, with a steep descent into Bakewell on the other side which was a challenge but we all managed to keep our footing (reinforcing the benefits of walking poles whatever the terrain) then crossed the swollen River Wye over bridges heavily adorned with “Love me” padlocks, for a picnic stop before adjourning into the welcoming Red Lion for liquid refreshments. Bakewell was supposedly founder in Anglo Saxon times and known as Badeca, but through the ages as was also called Badecanwelle and Badequelle. It is popular with tourist, not just for its pudding, but also as a hub for the Peak District National Park. The afternoon began by crossing the Grade I listed fivearched bridge over the River Wye, and a decent climb straight out of Bakewell, on the B6048, and then following the footpath north east back through Manners Wood and into the thick mist where we joined Handley Lane for an easy stretch into the estate village of Pilsley to the north. The climb continued through open fields, and back to our cars in Baslow. Lee had celebrated his forthcoming "big birthday" in style with his walking mates and we all enjoyed a very happy, and (thankfully) dry day out together. Norman backmarked with his usual enthusiasm and kept us all well informed of oncoming traffic where appropriate. Myself and 4 other Mums from Branton,1 Mum from Bessacarr, her 8 year old son Bodhi and my boys 78 year old Grandma from Northampton took part in a sport relief challenge to raise £750 in one week. Our challenge was to walk or run 1,500,000 steps from Saturday 17th March to 6pm on Friday 23rd March. This is equal to 27 marathons in 7 days. We all had our individual targets taking family life commitments and fitness levels into consideration and every one of us achieved our goal. We had rain, snow, bitterly cold winds, ice and hailstone throughout the week but we did it! Some members walked to and from work every day as well as additional night time walks to make up the steps. We raised £1231.00 in total so thank you all for your generosity, I know many donations were local. So ladies, what are we doing next year… Michelle Sidebottom

**New Consultant from 2nd of May**

New Slimming World Consultant Carol …. has launched a new Slimming World group in Finningley. Carol has benefited personally from Slimming World and now wishes to share her success and experiences with others setting out to lose weight. After trying a number of different dieting approaches, Carol never succeeded in keeping the weight off long term. With her confidence at an all time low and affecting both her personal and professional life, she knew something had to change. From the moment Carol walked into her first group meeting, she felt welcome. Every member in the group was there with the same goal. Carol found it critically important to always attend the group. Carol lost 4lbs in her first week which was a real boost and an early motivation to stick to the plan. Rapidly the whole family got on board to enjoy a variety of favourites, from Slimming World’s own recipe Bacon Carbonara to Iceland’s ready made Slimming World Meatballs and tomato sauce. Carol’s group leader was always there with support and practical advice and a key influence for her. An important tip Carol shares today is to be prepared. Have a few sensible snacks like rice cakes and bananas in case of a hunger pang! By following Slimming World’s Food Optimisation eating plan which encourages people to lose weight without going hungry by filling up on healthy foods like lean meat, fish, veg, fruit and fat free dairy, Carol has lost an amazing 4st 7lbs! With her confidence rocketed sky high, Carol achieved another personal goal by completing the Yorkshire Marathon at the end of last year, something she never dreamed she could do. Carol is looking forward to welcoming everybody to group this May, in her own words ‘If I can do it, so can you’. Group meets every Wednesday from 7pm at St Oswald’s church in Finningley.

Welcome to spring at Epworth Old Rectory With all our new arrivals I think we can say Spring really has arrived. Last week we had 15 new lambs in the croft with one ewe having triplets, and I'm fairly certain that there are even more this week, if only they would stand still long enough to be counted. We also have two new arrivals among our volunteers so a big warm welcome to Jo and Jami. Jo is helping in our gift shop and is settling in well - a good addition to out volunteers staff. Jami is helping out with the guiding and will be utilising his IT skills to help Gillian, our manager, in all kinds of ways. If there is anyone else out there who has half a day each week to spare and would like to join our happy band of volunteers please contact us - we'd love to meet you. Call Gill on 01427 872268, or call in any time we're open. Our new exhibition for this year is now up and running too. It has been curated and organised by one of our youngest volunteers, Amy Wilkinson, and is called Over the Rainbow. It's a continuation of our Methodist Women's exhibitions and shows how the women's network groups in the UK offered support to the women's Black Sash group in South Africa during their campaign to have Apartheid banished. Do come and share your stories with us if you were involved in the campaign in 1990 - we'd like to hear your story, and if you wrote it down add it to the archive. Our first big event of the season is almost upon us - our Spring Country Fair which we did for the first time last year. Gillian describes it as a mini festival of the plough, only without the ploughing. There will be all kinds of entertainments, craft stalls and community information stalls. It's a day for all the family to come along and enjoy. All we need is good weather - and lots of you coming to make it a truly spectacular day again. Sadly we have had to say a farewell to our previous press officer, Eddie Mardell, who passed away recently. Big boots to fill, but I will do my best to come close to doing so. Keep your eyes on the Rectory facebook page for information on when you will be able to tune in to an hour long programme on Sinefm - 102.6 on your dial all about the Rectory and share our choice of music. The volunteers will have chosen all the tracks that will be played on the day, my suggestion being Eva Cassidy singing Over the Rainbow to tie in with our Over the Rainbow exhibition. Gillian is also doing an interview on BBC radio Humberside on May 9th about her life as a museum curator. I hope our links with both radio stations will continue and prove to be fruitful I wish you all a happy Spring and look forward to meeting many of you at the country Fair - find me on The Old Rectory stall somewhere in the middle of the croft and say hullo.
