Welcome to the March issue of The Branton & Auckley Arrow. I hope everyone enjoyed the half term break, the weather was rather kind to us all (those of us who stayed at home!) This month’s Arrow is jam packed full of local information, making it easier than ever to become involved in your community. I just realised earlier this month, The Branton and Auckley Arrow will be 14 years old this year! Thank you for welcoming the Arrow into your home, I hope over the years, you have found it useful. We are currently restructuring our website to bring it up to date,. I will share more with you next month but hoping it will be even more informative and easier to navigate on all smart devices. If anyone wishes to advertise on our website—please get in touch. The deadline for the April issue is Wednesday 20th March. The April issue will be distributed the last weekend in March.

Best Wishes

Support in place for Doncaster residents Deputy Mayor of Doncaster, Cllr Glyn Jones, has further strengthened the council’s approach to supporting residents in financial difficulty. Working with local Citizens Advice, Cllr Jones has signed an agreed protocol which provides practical steps to support those who are struggling to pay their council tax. “We have a duty to all residents to collect council tax in a fair way,” said Cllr Jones. “However, we do recognise that there are people who are struggling to pay their bills and are falling down an ever deeper hole of spiralling debt.” Cllr Jones continued: “We have always been committed to helping residents in these very difficult situations and our continued work with Citizens Advice allows us to reach out to those who need our help from the start.” The protocol has been developed by Citizens Advice, along with support from the Local Government Association. It requires that local authorities work with enforcement and advice agencies to help people pay their council tax bills while accessing debt advice. Doncaster Council is the first local authority in South Yorkshire to formally sign up to this. Karen Bothamley, Chief Executive at Citizens Advice Doncaster Borough, explains further: “We recognise that councils are under huge pressures to collect council tax due to ever increasing budget restraints. However, when we work with the council to identify those who need support from an early stage it helps to prevent further charges and worries further down the line.

“Doncaster Council already follows all the good practice which is outlined in the protocol. By formally signing up to this, it reassures residents that we are working together to achieve the best outcomes for them,” said Karen. Anyone who is struggling to pay their council tax should contact the council as soon as possible on 01302 734454 and seek help direct from Citizens Advice on 01302 846745 or 0344 4994137. Those on means-tested benefits or a low income may be entitled to Council Tax Reduction. March 2019 Newsletter 2019 Annual Parish Meeting on Wednesday 6 March 2019 at 6.30pm To find out more about the exciting initiatives taking place in the parish any elector can attend the meeting to raise any matters for consideration by the parish council. The March parish council meeting will follow the Parish Meeting.

2019/20 Precept – Annual Review from 1 April 2019 Following the issuing of revised information from DMBC the parish council determined that the 2019/20 precept should increase by an average of 1.56% (for a Band ‘D’ property). This provides for an increase to enable further developments for the benefit of the community as well as to cover the cost of inflation and to take account of the reduction of £408 in grant funding from DMBC The total revenue raised will be £40,000.

Outcome of Consultation on the Provision of a Multi Use Games Area Thank you to the 60 parishioners who have taken the time to complete the consultation document which has provided useful information and denoted that over 75% were in favour of the provision of a MUGA. Arrangements will be made to hold a public consultation meeting at Kilham Hall later in the year when more details of the availability of the funding is known.

Keep Branton Tidy – Saturday 16th March 2019 Residents are invited to support the parish council in undertaking a litter pick to improve the appearance of the village. Please meet at Branton Garden Centre at 9.30am. Please email michelle@arrowpublications.co.uk to confirm if you are able to take part. Litter picks and bags will be provided—please bring your own gloves.

Vehicles Accessing Whiphill Top Lane from Chapel Lane The parish council has been made aware that a number of vehicles are using the ‘no entry’ area of Chapel Lane as an access to Whiphill Top Lane and there has been at least one incident of damage to a vehicle as a result. The information has been reported to the police but it would be helpful if details of particular times of usage or types of vehicles could be provided in order to assist the police. Please contact the parish clerk on cwbpc@outlook.com with any further information.

The parish council would like to wish everyone a very happy Easter To advertise please call 07795 387937 or 01302 534256

RSPCA bags £3,500 from Tesco RSPCA Doncaster, Rotherham and District Branch is delighted to announce it has bagged £3,500 from Tesco’s Bags of Help community grant scheme. Bags of Help is run in partnership with environmental charity Groundwork, and sees grants awarded to thousands of local community projects every year. Since launching in 2015, it has provided more than £67 million to over 21,000 good causes. Millions of shoppers have voted in Tesco stores up and down the country and it can now be revealed RSPCA Doncaster, Rotherham and District Branch has been awarded £3,500 to upgrade their rabbit unit flooring. RSPCA Branch Chief Executive Mary McSherry said: “We are delighted to have been awarded this generous grant by the Tesco Bags of Help community scheme. Upgrading the flooring means that the rabbits now have access to a fantastic area in which to hop, skip and jump. In addition, the staff and volunteers can spend more quality time with the animals, so it’s good news all round. The grant supports the vital work we do to rehabilitate and re-home the animals in our care.” Voting ran in stores throughout November and December 2018 with customers choosing which local project they would like to receive the top award using a token given to them at the checkout.

22

Alec Brown, Tesco’s Head of Community, said: “Bags of Help contributes funds to community projects up and down the country and we’ve been overwhelmed by the response from customers voting in their local stores. We’re looking forward to seeing more projects brought to life.” Groundwork’s National Chief Executive, Graham Duxbury, said: “Bags of Help continues to enable local communities up and down Britain to improve the local spaces and places that matter to them.” To mark Tesco’s 100th year, they have announced two special voting rounds, Tesco Bags of Help Centenary Grants, in summer and winter 2019 with larger grants over wider geographic regions. Find out more at www.tesco.com/bagsofhelp. You can help the RSPCA Doncaster, Rotherham and District Branch including volunteering, donating cash or goods, sponsoring us through our Safe Haven programme and attending our events. Doncaster Rambler’s Heathcroft almost Heathcliffe Walked Tuesday 12th February

Another healthy turnout of 39 walkers met at the Community Centre in Crofton for this moderate 10 mile anti-clockwise circuit of this post-industrial mining area, just to the east of Wakefield. After passing through Foulby (birthplace of John Harrison [24 March 1693 – 24 March 1776] an English carpenter and clock designer, who solved the problem of calculating longitude through the carrying of precise time on board ship) and Sharlston we headed north across reclaimed pit heaps with newly formed waterfowl lakes where we paused for a coffee, watching the birds, and watching where we sat. A bit further on we came across a couple of surveyors using a magnetometer (which are widely used for measuring the Earth's magnetic field and in geophysical surveys to detect magnetic anomalies of various types) to test the ground for historical sites as part of the HS2 project and they were bombarded with questions as we filtered past! This being a bit of a town and country walk, we inevitably had to cross some major A roads, and to the credit of the British motorist, drivers stopped to allow us crossing the road. Now heading west, we arrived at the lovely hamlet of Heath and our lunchtime stopover at the delightful King's Head where the staff were most obliging. Our afternoon section took us onto the TPT, (The Trans Pennine Trail is a long -distance path running coast to coast across Northern England entirely on surfaced paths and using only gentle gradients [it runs largely along disused railway lines and canal towpaths] from Stockport in the west to Hornsey in the east and is 207 miles) alongside the disused Barnsley Canal and through Walton Colliery Nature Park with the "pussy" willow buds beginning to show their furry contents. We arrived back by 3 pm and a voluntary collection raised over £28 for the Community Centre as a "thank you" for the use of their car park.

26

We all enjoyed our day out and the variety of the landscape during the walk. Thanks Pete for another successful and enjoyable "colliery walk" and thanks too to the other Pete (and Skylar) for safe backmarking. Dave Binnington Breaking News Beginning from our summer programme out in April Doncaster Ramblers will be offering, in addition to our normal Tuesday, and Saturday walk, an additional THURSDAY walk of 2 or 2 ½ hours duration in and around the Doncaster area. If you want a try out come and join us, all are welcome.
