We did it!!

The people of Branton got their crossing!

Well done everyone who was involved in campaigning for a safer crossing area on Doncaster Road over the last 5 years. I know there are similar campaigns in Auckley and Finningley, I hope your efforts prove to be successful too.

It was great to see all the villages helping in the search for Star, the young German Shepherd missing for 6 long cold nights in January! What a fabulous end to a story of human support and kindness.

This months Arrow has lots of information on local news, school news, child protection and community defibrillators. I always try to include as much editorial as possible so please keep sending me your news and information.

Community News Holy Family Finningley Catholic church welcomes you to our regular weekend mass celebration.

Kilham Hall News

Star Found after 6 nights On Thursday 26th January, an 18 month old German Shepherd named Star went missing after escaping from her family home on Milton Road, After Facebook campaigns, posters, leaflet drops, radio announcements, door knocking and mass group and individual searches by residents in Branton and neighbouring Villages, Star was found safe and well albeit a bit scruffy in a back garden on St Eric’s Road after spending six very cold nights living off the land!

Valentines Coffee Morning was held on the 14th February, Gateau was served and the event was very well attended.

The Next big event for the coffee club will be at Easter. On the 11th April, the Coffee club will hold a ‘decorated Hens Egg’ competition and serve Hot Cross Buns. A chocolate egg will be given to every entrant. Hope you can make it!

Our Coffee Morning is held every Tuesday commencing at 10.00am

Party Time?

Star’s family, Kath and Andy Houston and their children were overjoyed to be reunited with their very happy and excited pet dog.

The local support in the search for Star was overwhelming. It shows the true strength of our community and I know I am not alone in feeling very proud of living amongst such caring people.

Kath, Andy, James, Emily and Abigail would like to thank everyone for their support and kindness in finding their much loved Star!

At the end of this half term, Mrs Anderson will be leaving her post as lollipop lady for our school.

Mrs Anderson has been on crossing patrol duty in Finningley since September 2002, a period of nearly fifteen years.

Over the years she has met and supported many parents and pupils with crossing the increasingly busy Wroot Road, often in times of bad weather.

As a school we would like to say a huge thank you to Mrs Anderson for her years of service to her role. The children enjoy their daily interactions with her and will miss her exuberant personality.

Mrs Anderson will continue to support our school with Messy Church activities.

Provision of a Zebra Crossing on Doncaster Road, Branton The Parish Council are delighted that the long awaited Zebra Crossing is now in place. It is hoped that the crossing will make the road much safer for everyone to cross. The Parish Council would like to thank everyone who has played a part in securing the crossing, a fine example of team work.

New Outdoor Equipment at Kilham Lane Recreation Ground A consultation event was held on Saturday 28 January 2017 to outline proposals for a new range of outdoor equipment which includes a cable ride (zip wire), basket swing, a table tennis table, climbing wall and a range of gym apparatus. As further funding becomes available, a Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) is also planned.

Over thirty residents attended and there was overwhelming support for the proposal. There were lots of good ideas and requests for additional equipment and these will be considered once current proposals have been finalised. The parish council will work with DMBC to progress the plans a nd it is aimed to complete the first phase of the project by the 2017 school summer holiday period.

The parish council would like to thank everyone who attended the consultation event and provided feedback.

Christmas Carol Singing Thank you to all the residents who attended and everyone who supported the very enjoyable Christmas Carol Singing event at Kilham Hall on Wednesday 14 December 2016.

The proceeds of the raffle were again donated to the Harry Matthews Bowel Transplant Fund.

2017 Annual Parish Meeting on Wednesday 1 March 2017 at 7.00pm To find out more about the exciting initiatives taking place in the parish, any elector can attend the meeting to raise any matters for consideration by the parish council.

The March parish council meeting will follow the Annual Parish Meeting.

2017/18 Precept Annual Review from 1 April 2017 After careful consideration the parish council determined that the 2017/18 precept should not be increased significantly and therefore the average increase (for a Band ‘D’ property) will be 0.04% giving annual rise of £0.01. The total revenue raised will be £32,600 due to an increase in the number of properties paying the precept.

‘Searching for Star’ Many residents will be aware that Star (a young local Alsatian) went missing recently and was found after six nights and reunited with her worried owners, fortunately no worse for her ordeal. Many people joined in the search for her demonstrating the wonderful community spirit that exists in the parish and surrounding area. It is heart warming to know that people are willing to help their neighbours during difficult times.

Auckley Defibrillator Unveiling 13/01/17 The pupils, parents, staff and local community of Auckley School have made a tremendous effort to raise funds to purchase a defibrillator for the Auckley community. The school council came up with the idea to have a Great Auckley Bake Off following the success of one of the pupils, Jamie Wimble, in reaching the Junior Great Bake Off final. The parents, children and staff took part and there were some novel, impressive and delicious cakes produced. In addition, two parents, Miss McCaw and Mrs Cook, held a raffle and raised £170!

Mr J Fletcher, Mrs Barlow, Mr K Waight, Mrs Y Hargreaves and Furthermore, there were generous Mr C Payne donations from Mr Barlow, (Clean and Bright Windows), Mr Fletcher, (landlord of The Eagle and Child) and Mrs Rutherford.

Finally, Auckley Parish council presented the school with a very substantial donation.

On Friday 13th January an unveiling of this potentially lifesaving device took place in the school hall. Visitors included: Yvonne Hargreaves (Yorkshire Ambulance Service), Mr C Payne (Auckley Parish Council), Mrs Barlow (Parent), Mr J Fletcher (Eagle and Child) and Mr K Waight. Mr Waight provided match funding to purchase the defibrillator through his charity. Ken expressed his gratitude to everyone who contributed to this project. He said it is one of the few defibrillators in schools that is sited so that members of the public can have access to it. Mr Waight tragically lost his son due to a heart attack in 2009 at the Hayfield School. Through his fund raising efforts, he has raised over £42,000 for this extremely worthwhile cause. During the unveiling, the school council children gave an overview of how the funds were raised and served tea, coffee and heart shaped biscuits to the guests.

The defibrillator is sited on the wall outside the main reception to the school and is stored in a secure, bright yellow cabinet. In an emergency anyone needing this device can dial 999 and, if appropriate, they will be instructed to use the device and will be given the combination for the lock so the machine can be accessed.

FREE NHS Health Check Cardiovascular disease is responsible for more than 73,000 deaths in the UK each year. About 1 in 6 men and 1 in 10 women die from cardiovascular disease. In the UK, there are an estimated 2.3 million people living with cardiovascular disease and around 2 million people affected by angina (the most common symptom of coronary heart disease) The risk of developing cardiovascular disease can be lowered if you take preventive action.

On Monday 27th March, we will be joined by the Doncaster NHS Health Check Team at Kilham Hall from 9.30am until 3.30pm.

At your FREE NHS Health Check we assess your current risk by taking your blood pressure, your height, weight and cholesterol levels and this takes around 10 minutes. If needed we also check your blood sugar. Our nurse then uses these results to give you advice about how to lower your risk. All your results go straight to your GP. To qualify for your FREE check you should be a Doncaster resident aged between 40 and 74 with no pre-diagnosed cardiovascular disease, on statins or had a FREE NHS Check in the last 5 years.

Finningley Church Exciting News and School Admissions Policy It may seem a bit of a stretch to say ‘exciting news and school admissions policy’ in one breath, but please do read on as the two are linked and will affect our communities for a few months.

The Exciting You may be aware that for a number of years Holy Trinity and St Oswald’s has been developing plans and raising money to reorder the interior of the building. It was our hope and prayer to provide a building that was warm, had flexible seating, provided accessible toilets, had a good kitchen area and gave level access throughout for everyone to enjoy.

I’m very happy to be able to say that, thanks to people’s amazing generosity, fundraising, grants, and I believe answers to prayer, we have been able to sign contracts for work to commence in early April. This is fantastic, and we hope that Finningley Church can become a hub for everyone in our communities that goes beyond Sunday services.

The Practical This means that our last service in St Oswald’s will be the 26th of March 2017. Then, because of practical issues (like there being no floor!) and health and safety regulations we need to move out of the church building for the duration of the works. We are hoping to be back in at the end of July and we have an ‘official’ celebration weekend planned for the 9th and 10th of September and everyone is very welcome to come and have a look at what’s been happening. That’s a few months away yet, but we’ll get information about this out in good time.

So, in the interim period the Finningley Church will be joining their friends at St Saviour’s, Auckley, for joint services at 10.00am each Sunday. In addition, the two Sunday Clubs for young people will also come together at Auckley at the same time. Baptisms will need to take place at St Saviour’s too, so do get in touch if this is something you would like to explore.

The School Admissions Policy We have been asked if this will impact the Admissions Policy for St Oswald’s Academy, Finningley, regarding church attendance. So for clarification, only during the building work, attendance at ‘St Oswald’s Church’ will mean attending any act of worship shown on the church’s website/notice sheet, any Bible study group or the Sunday club held at St Saviour’s, Auckley. The sign in sheets that need completing will also be available at St Saviour’s.

The Future Exciting times lie ahead, and so we’re hoping we may be able to include photo’s of the work and news updates both in print and online during the months ahead. Watch this space.

This little cutie is Scally, an 8 year old Lakeland Terrier. Scally is a lovely friendly girl who would make an easy pet for an active older person, as she loves her walks and cuddles. She would need to be the only pet in the home, but would be ok with older children. Scally is neutered and vaccinated. She is just one of several terriers in the Rescue at the moment- all of them are looking for new homes. For more information, please give Isle Rescue a call on 01427 728705
