Welcome

to the June issue of The Branton & Auckley Arrow.

It feels so good to be back and we are very sorry we missed the May issue of the Arrow. We felt it was the right thing to do to protect our delivery staff and readers when there were still many unknowns about Covid 19. We have given careful consideration to when would be the right time to produce a new issue and taken advice from public health, local government, Royal Mail and others within this sector. I hope this issue of the Branton and Auckley Arrow brings you happiness and joy. I asked for photos of your VE celebrations, S’Care’Crows and any lovely stories you wanted to share and you didn’t disappoint. Thank you! I am sure you will have been moved by the generosity of our community, it’s spirit, good humour and positivity. At such a bleak time, there is so much to be thankful for. I am humbled by the commitment and motivation of our NHS staff who are working with this virus daily and carers who are living with it in their care homes. I sincerely hope we never forget your bravery. We have an article written by a local Nurse to help give you an insight into their daily life at work. To the army of support that has kept us all going, our local shop keepers, I don’t know how we could manage without you and hope we continue to repay your hard work and effort in the future by shopping local. Our police, Fire Service, bus drivers, shop workers, DMBC staff, teachers, Ward councillors and of course, everyone within the community who has volunteered their help and support to those in need and looked after their neighbours. From everyone at The Arrow and our sponsors, Thank you. Our next challenge after lockdown is how we learn to live with the threat of this virus. We

still need to work, be educated, exercise, care, pray and socialise. It is right to think about how we spend our money and the benefit in doing so. There are many small businesses who may not survive and this is devastating for them and their families, but for the our community also. Please, shop local wherever you can. I have spoken with each advertiser in this month’s issue whose main priority is the safety of their customers and themselves. Social distancing is paramount to reducing transmission as well as regular handwashing. We all have a responsibility to beat this virus and this is the only way we can help until our scientists find a treatment or vaccine. So, until we are safe, this community will continue to do what it does best, support one another, look after our most vulnerable and be mindful of how we can reduce the chances of transmission. The deadline for the July issue is Wednesday 17th June. The July issue will be distributed the weekend beginning 26th June. Keep safe everyone.

Community News COVID 19 COMMUNITY FOODBANK

2020 has been a testing year for the whole world and it's certainly a testing time for our football club. To keep our subscriptions low, we heavily rely on fundraising and sponsorship. With our annual tournament and club sponsored walk cancelled 2020 is going to be a test for us and many other clubs but there are currently bigger concerns to deal with. The past few months have seen the most challenging of times and there is still more to come. Work within the community started when we heard of an elderly gentleman whoo had tried and failed to shop for essential items. Luckily, two ladies were able to support him and sprung into action and donated some essentials to keep him going. We pride ourselves on being a community club and we knew we could do something to help. We shared the story on our facebook page and started collecting essential item donations on a Sunday from 10-12noon. The donations were bagged and distributed to the vulnerable in our community. DMBC contacted us and we agreed to join the COVID-19 campaign and become an official partner of the Doncaster community hub, based at the Dome. We are now providing for the vulnerable in and out of our community, led by our volunteer team. We are in partnership with the council and are in regular communication with them. Our opening times on a Sunday are 9am-12 noon, we collect and deliver essential items 7 days a week. To donate food, please contact 07444635510 or find us on facebook. If you are in need, please contact the Doncaster Community Hub, help is out there if you need it. Thank you to all of our volunteers, our community comes first.

Bessacarr Football Club Cantley A message of thanks from a local Branton resident You need not mention my name if you put this in The Arrow, but I have been met with a great deal of kindness, caring & friendliness in our village. Especially, living on my own , these people brighten up my days. Everyone I pass on my daily walks gives me a wave or a greeting.

Covid 19 Community Champions The April issue of the Arrow provided all of our readers with a list of local contacts who could arrange shopping, pick up prescriptions or provide a friendly chat if needed. The Arrow also asked for volunteers who would be able to carry out such jobs if needed. The response from our villages was immense. We have a list of over 100 people who volunteered their time. I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who offered to be part of the team. Some of you have had calls and helped out enormously and still are. There are also many of you who have looked after your neighbours and made sure everyone is cared for and supported. We really are so lucky to have such a caring community. Community Support Arrangements During the Coranvirus Outbreak A special message of appreciation is extended to Michelle Sidebottom for undertaking the role of the Area Co-ordinator and establishing with Doncaster Council a support network from Old Cantley to Finningley to ensure the most vulnerable section of our community continue to receive food and medical supplies when needing to self-isolate. Thank you also to Barbara Fussey who along with a number of volunteers and Michelle, continue to support those with the greatest need in Branton and Old Cantley area. Covid-19

A day in the life of a nurse in Doncaster A day in the life of a nurse? No two days or nights are the same and therefore it is difficult to say what a typical day or night would be. As a nurse we have tasks that are part of our typical shift but every shift has the potential to be exhilarating, exhausting, momentous and heart-warming (to name just a few). I have been nursing for over 20 years and can honestly say it is a vocation, and that I have loved every role I have had the privilege to do. Not one day have I wished I did something else, as each day is different and I am always developing and learning something new. There have been ups and downs on my journey, but all have made me the nurse I am today. At the beginning of 2020, we were planning events to celebrate ‘International Year of the Nurse’. At no point did we expect to be in the midst of a global pandemic, Covid-19. My colleagues and I have been challenged by these unprecedented times, doing new roles, working in new ways and coping with being redeployed to new teams and departments. I have been redeployed to a ward caring for Covid -19 positive patients. I am proud to be a nurse and able to care for patients when they are at their most vulnerable and sickest, but also support and reassure when they are frightened of this unknown (new) virus. As a nurse I reassure patients, but I am also a parent, so have my own worries and anxieties about what we are going through locally, nationally and internationally. I push these anxieties to the back of my mind to ensure I can focus on giving the best care to my patients. On arrival to the ward for my shift, it is time to don (put on) the personal protective equipment (PPE). The PPE consists of a gown over your scrubs, a hat, a mask, goggles and gloves. The PPE is vital to prevent cross-contamination, but difficult to wear. You have breaks, but wearing the PPE for a 12.5 hour shift is not easy as it is hot, uncomfortable and drying (you are not able to drink until all PPE is removed and hands washed for your break). It is also difficult for patients as

12

they cannot see nursing staff’s faces. They can’t see that reassuring smile behind the mask, and everyone looks the same. No-one is identifiable in the PPE. Once on the ward, the shift starts with handover (from the previous shift) before commencement of nursing tasks. These tasks include assisting with patient hygiene needs, medication rounds, doctor ward rounds, and checking patients vital signs (again, just to name a few). All the time we are monitoring patients to assess for any improvement or deterioration in condition and act on the assessments. An important role is to offer reassurance to patients to relieve their fears and anxieties, and also speaking with family members on the telephone to update and reassure them, with the current visiting restrictions in place due to Covid-19. I am the nurse I am because of the colleagues I have had the privilege to work with, but also because of the patients I have had the privilege to care for. The Covid-19 pandemic was not predicted, and is tough, but all members of the NHS have stepped up and we will beat this virus together! Stay safe and well. Nicola Severein-Kirk.

Well Covid 19 certainly changed what ever plans we had to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of VE day. But wow, we still celebrated and came together as a (Socially distanced) community and demonstrated our love for our neighbours, our elderly and our country. There wasn’t a street without bunting, most of which was handmade, posters of tommy in our windows, music, quizzes, street bingo, afternoon tea, singing, a piper in Auckley and lots and lots of fun and laughs. We made sure our children will remember this special day as we remember street parties gone by. Another memory of this time will be that of Captain Tom, or soon to be Captain Sir Thomas Moore! Boris Johnson nominated Captain Tom for a knighthood for his services to the NHS. Captain Tom’s fundraising efforts raised over 32million pounds, 20 million has already been divided between many trusts throughout the country. Some of the money has been used to set up well being areas in hospitals for staff to provide a safe area to release emotions after traumatic experiences. Electronic devices have been purchased to allow patients some contact with their loved ones whilst in isolation. In the long run, it is expected that the money will be used in planning for patients to leave hospital quicker and safer than before as well as mental health support for staff. This amazing gentleman set out to walk 100 laps of his garden as a thank you to the NHS, no one could have ever predicted our nations response. Such an inspiration and as Boris Johnson said, he provided a beacon of light through the fog of coronavirus. We have over the next few pages photographs that you have sent me of your VE day celebrations, bunting and lots of the fabulous S’Care’Crows organised by the wonderful Auckley Show committee. Congratulations to everyone who has taken part. The S’Care’ Crows make a wonderful walk around Auckley, helping to brighten up this difficult time and demonstrates the love and thanks we have in our villages for our key workers everywhere. From all of us at the Eagle, We’ll Meet Again.... Stay Safe x

Life of a teenager in WW2 Michelle chats to Joan. Even if we watch documentaries about D Day, VE Day or as part of Remembrance Sunday, we can sometimes forget that the real people who lived through those times of conflict and hardship are still around us. In our communities, towns and villages - perhaps they're even our neighbour. In Branton, as we continue to support each other through our own time of crisis, there is more time to hear some of the stories that need to be told. Right on our doorstep. Michelle has been meeting up with Joan Steele during lockdown and has captured some of her story. 94 year old Joan has been a Branton resident since 1964. She moved here with late husband Gordon - who she met at the age of 15 - so they enjoyed nearly 80 years together before he sadly died last year. Michelle asked Joan what it was like to live through WW2 as a teenager - a question close to home as Michelle's youngest son is 13 years old - the same age as Joan when the war began in 1939. Joan lived in Mexborough. her father died at the start of the war and her Mother remarried, so she lived in a house with her parents and a sister. They had a spare room so this was offered to evacuees, and a lady with a baby came to live with them. Looking back Joan remembered feeling anxious and uncomfortable about the thought of a stranger moving into her home. But although not compulsory it was the right thing to do. This new house guest had come from London, her husband, a soldier was away fighting. Things turned out well though, in spite of Joan's initial fears. Her memories of this little family are fond and they did keep in touch for a time after the war. Joan's daily routine as a child was to pick up your gas mask in the morning with your school bag and walk to school. The playground had been dug up to provide an air raid shelter and this was used on a regular basis. Joan's family also had an ‘Anderson’ shelter in their back garden. Their windows were taped to stop them shattering and injuring people in case of attack and you were not allowed lights on in your front room. All windows had to have blackout curtains to stop any light from escaping. A warden would keep check on every house in the community to make sure everyone complied. Joan still remembers the Sheffield blitz. The family - in their shelter - could feel the vibration of the ground as the bombs dropped. As Joan vividly describes: ‘You could tell if the airplanes were heavy with bombs by the sound of them as they roared overhead. You could hear the bombs drop and you would huddle together and hope you were safe. It was very frightening.’ The following day as you played outside you'd look for and collect shrapnel with your friends. In 1941 Joan met Gordon. He was a cadet and had American soldier friends who would give him silk stockings and perfume for Joan. A poignant and lovely memory from an awful time. Before the war ended, Joan as part of her war work was based at a factory called Swinton Wear Ltd, making Army uniforms and workwear for miners. Joan's recollections of the VE Day celebrations are warm and wonderful. There was a sense of relief, joy and happiness, Everyone was happy. Her mother played the piano after they dragged the piano out of the front room into the street. Dancing, singing - the conga! It was the street party to end all street parties. As it should have been. We will all tell our own tales of this time, when Lockdown passes and we slowly pick up the threads of our life before. In the meantime it's uplifting to hear the stories of those who have lived through times that we can't perhaps begin to imagine - and have come through. With thanks to Mel Hewitt –for Joan x

LOCKDOWN MEMORY: V E 75 It wasn’t how many of us had planned to celebrate VE 75 (Victory in Europe 75 years) but, what a celebration the village of Auckley had. Lots of hand-made buntings from duvet covers, sheets and Christmas table clothes. Special thank you to Marian for all her sewing skills and team Dart Marian, Sue, Danielle and Julie for helping me decorate the street. Our star attraction of the day 7year old Grace Slack who made a video that has gone viral and ended up on Doncaster Council and Bomber Commend Lincoln website trying to reach her nana whom she would have loved to have been able to celebrate with. We followed this at 11am with the Last Post and 2 minutes silence. What an amazing turnout we had. I don’t think there was a garden path empty on the street. Thank you all Dart. The afternoon, table and chairs appeared on the end of everyone’s driveway music and song along the way. Special thank you for the Pizza’s home made by Neil who pulled his pizza oven into the front garden for the occasion, Marian for her corned beef pie and rocky road cake, Sue for the egg sarnies, Diane for the home-made scones. It was lovely to see our older generation talking about the memories they had of the actual VE Day celebrations and hoped it helped newer members of the street get to know everyone. Thank you to everyone for keeping to the social distancing rules and being part of a very special day in lockdown that helped to lift all our spirits. A short taste of the celebrations of our street, hope you are all thinking of the next one VJ 75 15th August. (Victory in Japan and the end of the Second World War). Stay Safe and if anyone feeling stir crazy stand at the end of the drive and someone will come out. Diane Wraight

Auckley Parish Council Newsletter June 2020 www.auckleyparish.co.uk Parish Council Meetings No Parish Council meetings have been held since March, due to the Covid-19 restrictions. Hopefully they will be resumed in the not too distant future, and details of the next meeting will be posted on the Parish noticeboard and web site.

Support for the Community During the Coronavirus Pandemic Council wishes to thank all those volunteers who are delivering food and medical supplies to vulnerable people in the community, and key workers who ensure that vital services are maintained.

Hayfield Park Recreation Ground

Council is liaising with Peel regarding the opening of the recreation ground. Due to the large amount of rain that fell in the Winter months, the football field was left until Spring to be seeded, but the grass is now beginning to grow, and everyone is looking forward to the ground being opened, once the ‘lockdown’ is rescinded. Apart from the current facilities, Council is to provide a set of four swings to cater for younger children.

Scarecrows in the Village

Congratulations to the Auckley residents who have made and placed models/scarecrows around the village, some representing well-known characters, and others wearing masks in tribute to NHS workers. These creations are a welcome relief and brighten everyone’s day during this difficult time.

Finningley Women's Institute have been very busy during lockdown, engaging with members and the wider community. We began a 'Book Delivery' service, cleaning books with antibacterial wipes, sealing them in carrier bags and putting them in porches, on doorsteps and hanging from fences for villagers to enjoy. We have delivered over 600 books now, between Finningley, Blaxton and Auckley, which certainly gave members plenty of exercise. Our oldest member Joyce celebrated her 99th birthday during lockdown. As we couldn't celebrate as we would have wished to, we delivered a cream tea to Joyce, complete with Prosecco, which she was delighted to receive. Another member Joan, together with her husband Eric, celebrated 70 years of marriage during lockdown and received a card from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. We bought visors for Doncaster Hospital and knitted and crocheted 'Hearts' for critical care patients and their families. We've done village planting, Stay Safe Cupcakes, erected 'Sister Winnie' our scarecrow and delivered 40 treat boxes to members to keep them engaged. Finally, here is me and my husband Richard enjoying a well earned rest and bbq for 2 on VE Day. Hope everyone is keeping safe and well. Jayne Sims, President Finningley Women's Institute
