Welcome to the June issue of The Branton & Auckley Arrow. Well done to everyone who has just taken their SATS exams in year 6. This is the end of what can be a really stressful time for young people (as well as teachers, parents and carers!). Also, good luck to everyone taking their GCSE’s and further education exams. It takes a lot of work and effort to achieve the grades you need but don’t forget to take a break, go outdoors and leave the screens behind, if only for an hour a day. After enjoying a wonderful treat of a day out walking in Derbyshire with a lovely friend, I was really pleased to see that the Ramblers do shorter walks for those of us who work or have family commitments. Read more about these walks and find the Ramblers contact details in this month’s Arrow. There is nothing better than a good walk somewhere new and even better when someone else has organised it. The Auckley Show plans are well underway and they are pleased to announce two new sponsors, Yorkshire Wildlife Park and Amazone. Find the latest update in this issue. Don’t forget your scarecrows! The deadline for the July issue is Wednesday 19th June. The July issue will be distributed the last weekend in June.
Best Wishes

Branton Litter pick Saturday 6th July. After the successful litter pick in April, we have organised another for Saturday 6th July. We will meet at Branton Garden Centre coffee shop at 9.30am. If you would like to take part, please come along and join us. All you need is a pair of gloves. We understand not everyone can make these meetings, however, we know some of you pick litter on a regular basis when out and about in the village. This is great to hear, just because we didn’t drop it doesn’t mean we can’t pick it up. It makes a huge difference when we all work together. The majority of litter in the village is thrown from car windows and there seems to be little we can do about this, however, I was really upset to see the photo above which was sent to me by a resident (who subsequently cleaned up
the mess). For those of you familiar with the Park at Kilham Lane, there is a litter bin less that 10 feet away from the picnic table and a further 2 bins in the park. It is great that we have a lovely, safe park for us all to use and for our children to spend time playing, socialising and making new friends, but we need to keep reminding them (as I do with my own Son who uses the park) that it is there for everyone's benefit. To respect neighbours and users of the park and always put litter in the bins provided.
Please remember… 1. Dog waste can be put in all public general waste bins. 2. Doggy bags which are bio degradable, still need to be placed in a bin.
Please help to keep our villages clean and safe.

Community News Cantley with Branton WI In April Cantley with Branton WI celebrated its 70th birthday. Members had been fundraising in preparation for the event and were able to provide a supper with musical entertainment. There were balloons and bunting, as well as delicious cakes and savouries. At the end of the evening we toasted members past and present before the President cut the expertly iced cake made by one of our committee. Our next 70 years were off to a flying start in May when local artist, Margaret Clarkson, demonstrated her talent for watercolour painting, giving useful tips for the aspiring artists among us. Our next meeting will be Thursday 13th June when guest speaker will be Rachel Whittaker of the Jam Horse. Proceedings start

Community News DANUM PROBUS CLUB Danum Probus Club is an organisation for men who have retired or are semi-retired from their profession, business or other employment who want to maintain a social network with others who have similar interests. Danum Probus Club meets on the first and third Mondays of the month at Town Moor Golf Club, Bawtry Road, Belle Vue, Doncaster starting at 10 am. Tony Barber was the speaker on Monday 15 April. Tony’s presentation was entitled “The history of the St. Leger, the World’s Oldest Classic Horserace. This was a fascinating account of the ups and downs of the race since its inception in 1776 until the present time. It started as what was called a sprint in the 18th century ie 2miles in one heat only, not about 4 miles in several heats in the same day as sued to be the case. And with coming of the railways, the race became very popular with trainers and spectators. On May 6 Tony Dodsworth was “Following the Much Pichu Trail”. This Presentation was about getting to the Machu Pichu ruins on foot walking from Cusco in 4-5 days. Although the total distance of this hike was not huge (20 odd miles), the fact that it was done at altitude, much of it up and down not very level stairways, makes it quite an achievement. The effort involved in this well organised adventure was eased by having porters carry luggage and set up camps. This was a different insight into what one usually hears about Machu Pichu, and very welcome for that. And on May 20 Neville Williams’ subject was “The Yorkshire Wild Life Park”.
Mobile Foot Health Care by Kerry
On June 3 David Adgar will speak about “The Berlin Wall”, and on June 17 Nicola Fox’s subject will be “Cudworth Hall and the Battie-Wright Family”. Doncaster Rambler’s
Keeping it Local! We know not everyone has the time or fitness to commit to some of out longer walks so Thursday is all about keeping it local. If you haven’t been on one of our local Thursday walks, you don’t know what you’re missing! Ok, Thursday 9th May was a washout, but the rest have been brilliant, just check our website or Face Book page, for some fantastic stories and pictures. Our walk on 16th May was brilliantly led by Pete Smith who took us on a circular route along the edge of the River Don beginning at Sprotbrough Bridge (nr the Boat Inn) and up to Cusworth Hall. It was breezy when we set off but after the first half mile, we were all soon warmed up. Today there were ten of us some new some regulars, but all enjoying the camaraderie rambling can bring. The route initially on the Trans Pennine Trail, passes under the dramatic arches of the Doncaster Bypass, but then broke away as we followed the curve of the river. We managed to spot a cormorant, an energetic rower and a converted coal barge. It felt like high summer as the sun sparkled on the water. We then passed through a short stretch of woodland before making a sharp left, over a railway and back onto the TPT. You wouldn’t believe as you wander north on this disused railway line that you are in the middle of a housing estate! Just goes to show you don’t have to travel miles out of town to get a piece of tranquillity. Then another full left (not half) and you are in the grounds of Cusworth Country Park. And what a park. For many it brought back childhood memories of rolly polly down the hill, or sledging in the snow. You see walking can bring the past alive too. Mind you the climb up hill can be a struggle so be warned. (there are alternative routes at the base of the hill following the lake shore) Cusworth is ideal for a refreshment stop, as it offers public amenities, toilets, a café, and micro brewery (when open). Suitably rested we set off south down the hill and followed the path right though fields of oil seed rape. Thankfully the path was wide enough for us not to be covered in yellow. As we passed once more under the A1(M) we realised that our journey would soon be coming to an end. But first an open field, a couple of pylons, and a busy road, all adding to what turned out to be a happy adventure. Along the way we had a couple of stiles, a strange kissing gate and a cricket field boundary rope. In total six miles, 2hrs and forty three minutes. Inspired? Then join us. For more information about the Doncaster Ramblers and future activity please visit our Home Page and download full copy of our walk programme https://www.doncasterramblers.org.uk/walks/walks-programme-printed -version.html And follow us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/ doncasterramblers/ where GPS Maps of many of our past walks can also be found

You may have seen our posters "Giving Prostate Cancer the Boot" which is our latest fundraising appeal for a much needed biopsy machine for the Urology Department at DRI. We are so grateful to everyone who has already made a donation to this very worthwhile cause. If you are planning to hold a fundraising event or joining in an organised event on our behalf please do get in touch with us. We can provide you with leaflets, sponsor forms, T-shirts and include your photo taken at the event on our website. We will have a stall at Bentley Gala on Sunday, 14th July from 1-5pm where we will be selling new and donated jewellery as well as lots of other goodies. Do come along - this is always a popular event and there is something for all ages. We are still collecting scarves, jewellery and other items for tombola/raffles. We do try and collect wherever possible, but alternatively you can drop them off at our office in Wood Street which is where some of the buses now stop. We are at 22 Wood Street, Doncaster DN1 3LW (entrance by the side of Kerry Gough Florists), 2nd floor, Room 209. Tel. 01302 325029. Email: info@dcdt.co.uk. Website: dcdt.co.uk. Also if you would like to volunteer in any capacity you will be made very welcome. As always thank you to everyone who supports us - by helping our local hospitals this in turn benefits local people. It's a win/win situation!

Chapterhouse Theatre Company to appear at Epworth Old Rectory Lincoln based Chapterhouse Theatre Company is bringing Pride and Prejudice to the Old Rectory in Epworth. This will be the first time this company has performed at the Rectory and I'm sure it won't be their last. This is a troupe of eight actors who will interpret the well loved drama often seen on television; the story of intelligent, high spirited and strong young women living in a time when women were considered inferior and had very few rights, just like our story of Susanna Wesley. The Bennett sisters story may be a hundred or so years later, but they, liker Susanna struggled with adversity and won through to a successful outcome. I don't need to tell you the plot - you probably know it from the films just as well as I do, but what will be interesting will be to see how the main characters are portrayed live on our formal lawn. Tickets can be obtained on line or from the Rectory, and do remember to come early and bring your picnic. For more information or enquiries please contact the Rectory on 01427 872268, or simply call in whenever we are open. Cath Fordham

Thank you I would like to say a big thank you to Sandy and Angie at Peacocks for helping me to organise Sid’s 50th Birthday party on Friday 19th April. The venue was perfect and the outside area a real bonus considering the weather we had that day. We had pulled pork sandwiches with stuffing and apple sauce served with wedges. The food was delicious and the bar staff were so friendly and accommodating. I will definitely consider this venue again in the future, thanks again to everyone who made it special, including the band who sang ‘The Greatest Day’ just for Sid!

Kitchen makeovers
beyond your wildest dreams!
Dream Doors Doncaster Unit 4 Mill Street Shopping Centre Armthorpe DN3 3DL Tel: 01302 639801 Email: dn@dreamdoors.co.uk
Now celebrating its irst anniversary, Dream Doors based at Unit 4 Mill Street Shopping Centre in Armthorpe offers kitchen makeovers and re-designs at less than half the cost of a full kitchen re it.
Owned and managed by husband and wife team Jerry and Emma Innesbeer, along with the Showroom Manager – Abi Sheppard, Dream Doors has gained an impeccable reputation for transforming old and tired looking kitchens by simply replacing and upgrading the constituent parts. This has proved to be a more cost-effective option compared with ripping the entire kitchen out and starting from scratch. Using the highest quality materials with ‘in vogue’ colours such as cashmere, grey and copper, kitchens can be metamorphosed into stunning and contemporary designs. Cupboards, drawer fronts, worktops, taps, loor tiles and appliances can all be exchanged and even moved to create bespoke kitchens to suit individual tastes and preferences. Quartz overlays are very much sought after nowadays, proving to be a very practical and money saving option. “The kitchen is probably the most important room in the whole house” said Jerry. “At Dream Doors we can install a fresh new kitchen within 48 hours,
replacing the doors and worksurfaces for a fraction of the cost of a full re- it. Kitchen makeovers are popular all over the UK and I’m delighted to say that our modern and welcoming Armthorpe showroom has become a lagship one for the Dream Doors franchise. A ‘Checkatrade’ rating of 9.81 from 32 reviews certainly reinforces our high standing”. Jerry and Abi pride themselves on offering the highest professional standards of personal service. Abi runs the showroom and undertakes the initial customer consultation, whilst Jerry project manages every job from home visit and original design to inal installation. They also bene it from having the back up and support of a national organisation, which knows the industry inside out. “The interest in kitchen makeovers shows no sign of
abating” said Abi. “People want lovely kitchens they can be proud of, but do not want the cost and hassle of a full re- it. We offer a wide range of styles, as well as many appliances and white goods, so are able to offer customers a memorable kitchen from a simple door swap, to a full replacement kitchen. Our highly-experienced itting team can cope with any job – however big or small!” As well as kitchen makeovers, Dream Doors can also transform any bedroom to suit individual needs and requirements.
