Welcome to the July issue of The Branton & Auckley Arrow.

Well, what a watering we had in June, obviously preparing us for the heatwave in July and August (I hope!). If you haven't heard already, the tickets for the Auckley Show evening event are now available. Find further details on how to get yours on p24, looks like they have a super evening of music lined up from Glam Rock Group ‘The Glamned’ featuring music from the seventies. Branton Litter pick group are holding another litter pick event on 6th July, see p4 for details. It would be great to see you there, everyone is welcome. Work will be underway during the school holidays on Hurst lane in Auckley so be prepared for road closures on Hurst Lane, a diversion will be in place along Mosham Road and Gatehouse Lane. The deadline for the August issue is Wednesday 10th July. The August issue will be distributed the last weekend in July.

Best Wishes

Community News Friends of Kilham Hall Park, Branton. Cantley with Branton Parish Council would be interested to hear from anyone who would like to be involved in volunteering a bit of time to a ‘Friends of Kilham Hall Park’ group. The responsibilities would involve regular visits to the park to check on any litter, maybe a spot of gardening if that’s your thing and really, just taking care of the park’s well being so it can always be used as intended. We do have a Handyman who cares for the park, but he is only here 2 times per week through the day. It would be great to have more adults who use the park, especially after 6pm in the summer. We want everyone, young and old to feel comfortable in the park and want to discourage any behaviour which makes the park less fun to visit. If you are interested, can you please contact the Parish Council Clerk, Julia Staniforth, on cwbpc@outlook.com

Community News Auckley Neighbourhood plan Dear Resident, As you may be aware, a Neighbourhood Plan is being produced for Auckley Parish and will cover a period from 2019 – 2035. The Neighbourhood Plan is being produced by a group of local residents, including 2 parish councillors. In 2017 and 2018, some consultation was undertaken with the community to gauge opinion on certain issues such as where new development should be located and what areas of the community should be protected. Since then, the working group have been undertaking further work on these particular issues and are now preparing a draft Neighbourhood Plan. This further work included looking into what type of housing is needed in the area and in what areas of the community it should be located. Other work included identifying areas of green space that should be protected and buildings which have an historic value. Once the draft Neighbourhood Plan is ready to view, the group will share this with the community through a consultation period. There will be events and information produced to publicise the consultation nearer to the time. If you want to keep up-to-date with the progress of the Neighbourhood Plan, then please see the Neighbourhood Plan

DANUM PROBUS CLUB Danum Probus Club is an organisation for men who have retired or are semi-retired from their profession, business or other employment who want to maintain a social network with others who have similar interests. Danum Probus Club meets on the first and third Mondays of the month at Town Moor Golf Club, Bawtry Road, Belle Vue, Doncaster starting at 10 am. Tony Barber was the speaker on Monday 15 April. Tony’s presentation was entitled “The history of the St. Leger, the World’s Oldest Classic Horserace. This was a fascinating account of the ups and downs of the race since its inception in 1776 until the present time. It started as what was called a sprint in the 18th century ie 2miles in one heat only, not about 4 miles in several heats in the same day as sued to be the case. And with coming of the railways, the race became very popular with trainers and spectators. On May 6 Tony Dodsworth was “Following the Much Pichu Trail”. This Presentation was about getting to the Machu Pichu ruins on foot walking from Cusco in 4-5 days. Although the total distance of this hike was not huge (20 odd miles), the fact that it was done at altitude, much of it up and down not very level stairways, makes it quite an achievement. The effort involved in this well organised adventure was eased by having porters carry luggage and set up camps. This was a different insight into what one usually hears about Machu Pichu, and very welcome for that. And on May 20 Neville Williams’ subject was “The Yorkshire WildLife Park”. On June 3 David Adgar will speak about “The Berlin Wall”, and on June 17 Nicola Fox’s subject will be “Cudworth Hall and the Battie-Wright Family”. Any interested men who would like to come to these meeting as a visitor to see what we do, with a view to joining if you like us, please call either George Kirk (07808191211) or Geoff Firth (01302 849734) for more information.

Doncaster Rambler’s A local walk to Blaxton and back

It continues to amaze me how many little gem footpaths there are around Doncaster. Take today, when I read “a leisurely walk to Blaxton and back to Finningley” I thought, “is it worth it, we’ve walked this area a thousand times?” A few others thought the same, as only eight regular ramblers turned up today, but you know what, Hilda our walk leader, pulled it out of the bag, and took us places new and unexplored. Starting at the village green Hilda took us a short circuit round Finningly passed the church and playing fields, over the railway and north to the eastern edge of Blaxton. We then continued north to High Common wood, then turning right and right again heading south to the west of Blaxton and back to Finningley where we made a final wider circuit of the village back to the green. Yet this walk wasn’t just about the direction, or even the changing landscape, it was about the atmosphere, standing in the village green surrounded by ducks, or lost in a wood with bird song. Or diving through a tunnel of gorse as your mates disappear, then dancing around the edge of a puddle hoping not to fall in. This walk took us from field edge to forest and back to field edge, winding through the environs of Blaxton and Finningley, in some cases no more than 100 meters from houses, yet could be in the middle of nowhere! Places where memories of childhood adventures come back to life. That’s what a walk like this is all about. Brilliant Hilda thank you. Missed this one? There are plenty more Thursday walks to enjoy, visit our website for details For more information about the Doncaster Ramblers and future activity please visit our Home Page and download full copy of our walk programme https://www.doncasterramblers.org.uk/walks/ walks-programme-printed-version.html And follow us on Facebook https:// www.facebook.com/doncasterramblers/ where GPS Maps of many of our past walks can also be found.

HOLIDAY TIME FOR THORNE CAMERA CLUB The Camera Club is now well into its Summer programme with outings and photo shoots as well as holidays. Looking forward to Thorne Summer Festival, the Camera Club will be holding a free Exhibition of members’ work. The Exhibition Organiser, says, ‘ Come and visit our compact display of photographs by members of the Club, ranging from landscapes to seascapes, people, wildlife, flowers and many more topics. There will be over 70 images on show over two days enabling work from many members to be displayed. Members will be on hand throughout the exhibition to discuss the images, answer questions and also encourage anyone interested in Photography to join the Club and its activities.’ So why not go along and have a look at what they have been doing, and chat to members about the photos. You will be very welcome. As a bit of light relief at the end of the Spring Programme, the final projected image competition was Open only, with X-Factor judging, a panel of four members, as it suggests. Each judge, in this case, Jackie Woodward, Mike Donnison, Graham Linley and Terry Lockwood, gave a mark to each image, which, added together, gave the final score. The winning images were: Michael Farrand’s ‘By the Canal’ first, ‘St Mark’s Fly’ by Bill Mitchell second, also third with ‘Oak Leaves and Marble Gall’. Highly Commended was ‘Roseberry Topping’ by Terry Gunnill. The Chairman commented on the high standard of all images entered. This was followed by a small finger buffet and drinks to celebrate the end of another successful season, thanks to those helping out in the kitchen. Then, some exhibition winning images from around the world from the Yorkshire Photographic Union, were shown by chief projectionist, David Ulyett. The Summer School got off to a good start with all students attending the first session held in the Memorial Park in Thorne. Here they put into practice lessons learned regarding aperture setting and depth of field. The second session was rained off, and the class was forced to seek refuge in the Punch Bowl Inn where there was a warm welcome and chance to at least talk about the main points of the session. Other venues included St. Nicholas Church and Thorne town centre. A special invitation was received to a private photo shoot in the Old Rectory at Epworth, former home of the Wesley family. It was John Wesley and his brother, Charles, who founded Methodism here in Epworth, and then carried the word around the world. The Old Rectory, a beautiful Queen Anne style building, is decorated and furnished in the style the Wesley brothers would have been familiar with, as it was the home of their parents Samuel and Susanna Wesley and the remaining seven children. If you are interested in the Camera Club, please visit the Exhibition at the Summer fair.

Hopefully the sun will be shining by the time you read this after a wet start to June! We haven’t a final figure yet for the Midsummer Walk donations as Christine from Thorne Rural Lions has been on holiday. Will report back as soon as possible. In the meantime our sincere thanks to everyone who took part (and their sponsors) – we had almost 200 walkers and thankfully it was a dry day. Our grateful thanks also to Lions International, particularly Thorne Rural Lions, for all their hard work.

A reminder that we have a stall at Bentley Gala on Sunday, 14th July where we will be selling jewellery and other goodies. The Gala will be in Bentley Park from 1-5pm with lots to do and see for all the family. Come along and join in the fun. Also Optima International on Askern Road at Toll Bar will be holding their annual Open Day on Friday, 26th July from 12-5pm. Entry is £5 on the day, but £4 if bought from the company beforehand. All rides are free and unlimited. A bar and refreshments are available. This is another popular event and money raised goes to charities (including DCDT). A reminder that we will also have a stall at Auckley Show on Saturday, 17th August. Details will be in next publication. Let’s hope the sun shines for all these events as there is a lot of hard work behind the scenes in organising them. Please let us know if you have any unwanted scarves or jewellery or any tombola/raffle prizes. If you are planning a fundraising event on our behalf we can supply you with T-shirts, sponsor forms, etc. We are at 22 Wood Street, Doncaster DN1 3LW (entrance by the side of Kerry Gough Florists), second floor (lift available), Room 209. Prince Charming

Prince is one of the long stay rescue dogs at the RSPCA South Yorkshire Animal Centre. He is a handsome boy, full of energy and life when outside, who loves running around the paddock with his favourite toy - he is also partial to a good snooze in his kennel. Prince has been at the Centre for many months and his successful re-homing into a loving home is a priority. Caring for animals like Prince, who are in the Animal Centre through no fault of their own requires considerable funding. With rehabilitation high on the list of priorities for the Branch, time and resources are central to achieving our aim and these need funding. One way RSPCA Doncaster, Rotherham and District Branch achieves this is through events that offer supporters a chance to enjoy quality time with friends and family and raise funds to support vital welfare work with animals such as Prince. 2019 has already seen some fantastic events: the Easter Egg Puzzle Hunt was hugely successful and drew in over twice the number of people than it did last year; Big Walkies around the beautiful Thrybergh was a great event, giving folk time to share their love of dogs and dog walking and the Pea ‘n’ Pie Supper and Pub Quiz was a sellout success, which raised vital funds. All of the money raised is used to support the animal welfare work at the RSPCA South Yorkshire Animal Centre and so far this year over 330 dogs, cats, rabbits and small animals have been successfully rehabilitated and re-homed With even more exciting events coming soon, such as the annual Fun Dog Show, Zip Line Challenge and Glitter Disco we will be able to support even more animals like Prince, who depend on us for that second chance. So please come and join us at our events.

If you would like to meet Prince (or any of our animals), contact the Animal Centre – 01302 719790 or visit www.rspcadoncasterrotherham.org.uk

An online voting form will be available on our website, with instructions on how to let us know which your favourite display is. Results will be announced at the show.

A message from committee member Kirsty Jo Muddiman.

Introduction/The Environmental Impact of Our Show Every year we make sure the site for the Auckley Show is left as good, if not better, as when we arrived. This takes a lot of time and effort in litter picking and space in the skip. We got to thinking about how we could reduce this waste, our costs and time and also having less impact on the environment. We all know what impact single use plastic has on the environment and at the Auckley Show we want to make progressive steps to improve our sustainability. What you drink from at the show has been single use plastic in the past. Well, that wibbly wobbly juggling act is now a thing of the past. CAMRA use souvenir glasses at their beer festivals but we can’t use glass on the playing fields, for obvious reasons. Our Solution/ Reusable plastic glasses This year we are bringing you our first reusable glasses for the show. Robust and inflexible, we hope you’ll find an improved plastic drinking experience this year! We are asking for a small refundable deposit for each glass, which you can keep as a souvenir or return for a full refund. Remember- any glasses you keep can be reused over and over and are perfect for patio drinks outside in summer. Bring them back to next year’s show to save even more plastic waste! You’ll be contributing to Show funds for every glass you keep. We’ll also have bamboo straws to buy if you fancy getting ahead of the game on the plastic straw ban. Plastic waste is having a huge impact in our landfills, on our beaches and in the sea. In conclusion This is our first step to improve the sustainability of our show and we’re hoping very much that you’ll support us so that we can continue to build on the first step into the future. If any business would like to sponsor the highball glasses for soft drinks, half pints and wine then please do get in touch.

Finally a reminder about tombola prizes. We need them now to help fund raise. We are always short of bottles of wines and spirits if you’re short of ideas. We can collect them, call 01302 770818 or drop them off with Georgina at 23 Ellers Lane and Julie at 5 Rushley Close Regards Neil Woodward Chairman Auckley Show
