Welcome
To the January issue of
Branton & Auckley Arrow
I love driving and walking through our villages, the effort everyone has made, decorating their homes with lights is so uplifting, if only Christmas would last till March :) I’m feeling really positive about 2021, with the new vaccine, we should hopefully regain some normality and return to our more recognisable lives. I have to admit, at times I have felt utterly miserable and know I am not alone. This is normally the time of year we sit and consider our future, new challenges and ‘resolutions’. What ever yours may be, I hope your journey through 2020 has not been too difficult and all your new ideas for 2021 can be achieved. The deadline for the February issue is Wednesday 20th January. The February issue will be distributed the last weekend in January.
All the best for 2021 Michelle Sidebottom Tel: 07795 387937 michelle@arrowpublications.co.uk arrowpublications.co.uk

Santa’s visit to Auckley
From left: Anthony Lee, Darren Fiddler, Lorraine Lee, Dawn Fddler, Molly Fiddler & Charlotte Lee
The residents of Auckley were thrilled to receive a visit from Santa and his elves on Saturday 12th December. Young and old stood by their front windows or in their gardens and waved and cheered as Santa went past in his sleigh. Santa’s friendly elves followed, waving at all the residents. Dawn, Darren and Molly Fiddler, Lorraine, Anthony and Charlotte Lee went the extra mile when our normal visit from Santa, organised by Thorne Rural Lions, couldn’t go ahead due to restrictions and the scale of their operation. The local team got to work and made sure the village would not miss out. Dawn Fiddler said ‘This has been a group effort from people lending us outfits, The Spar and Nisa donating sweets, Christine for collecting the sweets, Louise Attenborough donating money. Lorraine and Anthony who have been fantastic in making this come together, couldn't have done this without you! Molly and Charlotte you made great Santa's helpers. Thank you everyone for joining in and making this such a special night.’
A delighted toddler waves at Santa.

Thorne Rural Lions will return next year and visit us all as usual. All the villages are looking gorgeous and festive with so many people decorating their homes with lights. Thank you to everyone, the lights bring pleasure and delight to us all, here are just a few I spotted.

Covid Memorial at Kilham Park, Branton
Cantley with Branton Parish Council would like to provide some remembrance of 2020 at Kilham park. This is still in the early planning stages but they would like, with the support of Branton St Wilfrid’s school, for all children who have painted stones over this period starting back in March, to either drop their stones off at school (contact the school office for details) or leave them in a container that will be provided in January within the garden of Kilham Hall next to the salt container. The parish council would like to form a permanent snake with the stones in one of the external walls of the extension to the hall.
Branton Litter Pick Group The Winter Branton Litter Pick was unable to go ahead due to the Lockdown and restrictions, we hope to have a new date soon and will update you as soon as we can.

S.O.S. Support Our Show Les Francophiles de Tickhill As the year turns, the Committee would like to wish all members ‘Bonne Année’ for 2021 and looks forward to welcoming you again to our monthly meetings. This, unfortunately, won’t be until March or April at the earliest and, even then, it will depend on government regulations in place at the time. We are ready to start with a full programme and you will be contacted by email nearer the time. Meanwhile, we hope you are enjoying the Newsletter sent to all members. If you have anything to contribute to this, please contact Ruth Edwards at francophilesdetickhill@out look.com The Society meets in the Parish Room, Tickhill, on the first Wednesday of the month at 7.30pm (doors open 7.00pm). Please ring Jan Murray on 01302 611415 for further information.
We are continuing with our monthly draw, a way in which everyone has an opportunity to support the show. The current situation restricts the way in which we can call and collect payments that are due for renewal. The last couple of months we have been sending our supporters a letter with suggestions on how best to renew. We thank you for your continued support. Any new members can apply on line through our website. www.auckley.show.co.uk or give me a call to arrange 01302 770818. We are keeping our discounted price at £10 for twelve months with a chance of winning £100 each month. It's really sad news we had to cancel 2020. However, plans are well underway for next year which will be Saturday 21st August 2021. With your support we’ll make it the best ever annual community event. Winner of the December draw number 518 Julia Staniforth who wins £100. Please note you don’t have to live in Auckley to help support our show. The committee would like to wish everyone all the very best for the new year. Regards Neil Woodward Chairman Auckley Show

Ready, steady, census...
Households across Doncaster will soon be asked to take part in Census 2021.
The census is a once-in-a-decade survey that gives us the most accurate estimate of all the people and households in England and Wales. It has been carried out every decade since 1801, with the exception of 1941. Census day is Sunday 21 March 2021 and it will be the first to be run predominantly online, with households receiving a letter with a unique access code allowing them to complete the questionnaire on their computers, phones or tablets from early March. “A successful census will ensure everyone from local government to charities can put services and funding in the places where they are most needed,” Iain Bell, deputy national statistician at the Office for National Statistics, said. “This could mean things like doctors’ surgeries, schools and new transport routes. That’s why it is so important everyone takes part and we have made it easier for people to do so online on any device, with help and paper questionnaires for those that need them.” The census will include questions about your sex, age, work, health, education, household size and ethnicity. For the first time, there will be a question asking people whether they have served in the armed forces, as well as voluntary questions for those aged 16 and over on sexual orientation and gender identity. Results will be available within 12 months, and personal records will be locked away for 100 years, kept safe for future generations. There are also full and part time job opportunities available in Doncaster, please see www.censusjobs.co.uk for more information and to apply. For more information on how the census works and can benefit our community visit www.census.gov.uk or contact Laurance.green11@field.census.gov.uk 07452 940363 To advertise please call 07795 387937 or 01302 534256

Hello from everyone at the Auckley Parent and Staff Association. We have had a really busy December with our fundraising. Thank you to each and every parent/carer who purchased Christmas cards and gifts and also purchased the amazing knitted decorations. A MASSIVE thank you also to our amazing knitters. We were overwhelmed with the number of decorations which were created by you all. Watch this space, we have another idea for Easter up our sleeves! Santa made a little delivery to our children just before Christmas, with the help of donations from Chris and the team at Spar, Auckley. Thank you to Chris for donating 32 selection boxes to Santa, our children loved them. 2020 has been a very tough year for fundraising with our school being closed and not being able to host our usual discos and movie nights, however we have lots of exciting COVID safe ideas coming in the New Year and we can not wait to share them with you.
Our next virtual meeting is Tuesday 12th January at 8pm. Please email AuckleyAPSA@gmail.com if you would like to join us.
From our house to yours, we wish you a 16
Please mention “The Arrow when responding to advertisements very Happy New Year!

This year our oldest children in the school have put a smile on everyone’s faces by building and decorating our annual Christmas tree. Even though this year has been difficult we are all pulling together to make Christmas 2020 a very happy season. We have also been working hard to strengthen their links with the local community by making Christmas cards for the residents of William Bradford Court Retirement Village in Bawtry. With their fun and festive creations the children have been encouraged to show acts of kindness and think of others throughout this strange, unpredictable festive period. That is before we mention the Elf on the Shelf that has once again taken residence in Misson Primary School to create chaos, laughter and entertainment, while sticking to all our necessary precautions to keep everyone safe.

MISTERTON AUTHOR COMPLETES CHILDREN’S BOOK ABOUT BEREAVEMENT IN LOCKDOWN – HELPING HIS OWN LOSS When the country went into lockdown in March, it would have been easy for Ric Hart to sink into depression. He had lost his wife, Jade, just after the birth of their son, Hugo, in 2018. Instead, he spent the time writing a book for Hugo – and other young children - about bereavement. Now the book has been published and is finding new readers as children and families come to terms with losing loved ones to Coronavirus. Hugo and Daddy’s Night-time Adventures is written as a poem and linked by colourful illustrations to capture moments, memories, and feelings around the loss of Hugo’s mummy. It might just provide some help with a little one’s loss. Proceeds of the book go to Cruse, the bereavement care charity. Now Ric has presented copies to Misterton Library (pictured in the Library, and with his son, Hugo). The books will be absorbed into stock and will be available to readers across the county. A copy has been donated to Misterton Primary School. Doncaster Council is to provide a copy of the book for each of its staffed libraries, and a copy for its school library service. The title has been sent to Notts County Council in the hope that it, too, will see the value of the book, particularly at this time of loss due to Coronavirus. Ric is two years into his journey as a single parent and widower and has found huge inspiration, peace, and acceptance of the loss of his wife by keeping her memory alive through the creation of his books. And during the second lockdown, Ric has been working on a follow-on book, Hugo and Daddy’s Thailand Adventures. It will be published in early 2021 and will involve a link-up with a kids’ adventure charity, which will benefit from the proceeds. Then, in February 2021, Ric will publish an autobiography of his life with Jade, Pupy Love. February 14 - Valentine’s Day - is when they met in 2002 and when, in 2018, Jade had her 20-week scan and they found she was expecting Hugo. Hugo and Daddy’s Night-time Adventures is in paperback, retails at £5.99, and is available from Amazon. Another special project that Ric did in lockdown was on Jade’s website. It brings together images of Jade that so many have not seen for friends and family to share and come together. This also helped him with his own therapy, creating this in memory of Jade. Jade’s website: www.jadehartpupylove.co.uk

Independent Walk Routes around Doncaster A local walk from Rossington with wife Please observe government tier 3 guidelines inc “rule of 6”. Carry masks, hand sanitizer and gloves, and obey social distancing rules. Follow the countryside code and give way to other walkers. It was a treat to be joined by my wife Anne on this short walk around Rossington. Those who follow Doncaster Ramblers on Facebook will recognise the route which we have done a couple of times. The joy this time, apart from having the wife along, was being able to stop and linger at the sights and sounds around us. It was impossible not to hear the birds shrieking as they prepared to roost or gaze at the dark skeletal trees as the sun sparkles though. It was a beautiful sunny day which brought out other walkers, couples, families, joggers, bikers, and dog lovers, all enjoying this open space. It is great to see that despite the pandemic, and all the restrictions we have endured people still want get out into the open air. Doncaster Ramblers wish everyone a safe Christmas and Happy New Year

Doncaster Rambler’s A local walk from Thorpe-in-Balne
Rules continue to change regarding outdoor exercise and group activity so please visit our website https://www.doncasterramblers.org.uk/ for latest details and https://www.gov.uk/guidance/newnational-restrictions-from-5-november for government guidelines. While out observe social distancing, carry a mask, hand sanitiser, and gloves. Obey the Countryside Code and give way to other walkers. Another rule – expect the unexpected when out on a Friday ramble (Rossington: ignore “Path Closed” sign, Cadeby: fight your way through undergrowth chest high!) so no surprise when a detour was forced on us today! The quiet village of Thorpe-in-Balne was the start of our 5 ½ mile circular trek, taking in secluded hedgerows, ancient green lanes, tree covered tracks. There were the inevitable muddy paths (one of us even had a boots disaster as they continued in stocking feet!) balanced by stretches of long wet wet wet grass, plus several slippery stiles, and one footbridge-less ditch! I love the peace of this route as it winds first west then north to the southern edge of Askern before heading east to Haywood. Hidden and not well trodden you can go hours without seeing another soul, except perhaps the odd farmer his dog and a few sheep. Today though there were eight of us, plus Rascal our mascot and as we approached the railway crossing at Wrancarr Green Gate, horror of horrors – locked! Plus and typical when a crisis looms, it began raining! Still, we kept our cool, held a meeting, took inspiration from our mobile phones, and discovered another route. So retracing our steps we took a north easterly loop via Wrancarr Lane and Clay Bank eventually after a mile getting back on track. The final stretch took us south east passing only feet from the front door of Wrancarr House the home of a boisterous Rottweiler today thankfully locked in, then on to the hamlet of Trumfleet. From there it was a straightforward romp south back to Thorpe-in-Balne. What I love about these walks, and why everyone should give them a go is their informality, we all muck in to make it a joy for everyone. For more information about the Doncaster Ramblers and future activity please visit our Home Page https://www.doncasterramblers.org.uk/ And follow us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/doncasterramblers/

Over the last few years, The Friends of Doncaster Museums have been building an impressive events calendar. Meeting once a month, on a Saturday morning, The Friends have welcomed a wide range of speakers, to well attended meetings. As well as local speakers, we have had several high-profile guests. Gervase Phinn, the best-selling author began these ‘special’ events in 2018. He has been followed by Joann Fletcher, the well-known Egyptologist who has presented a number of television series, Tracy Borman, author, television presenter and joint curator of Historic Royal Palaces and Carenza Lewis, prominent archaeologist, who was one of the stars of the long running Time Team series. In 2021, the programme will include an illustrated ‘Walk along the River Don’ and a much-anticipated talk by art historian Rachael Holland Hargreaves on the Staithes Group, otherwise known as the ‘Northern Impressionists. Travel across the globe and mention Doncaster and two things will come to people’s lips. To many, the town is synonymous with horse racing, with the St.Leger meeting being one of the highlights of the flat racing season, as well as showcasing the oldest classic race in the world. To others however, Doncaster is the place where the steam locomotives Flying Scotsman and Mallard were built. But the association between the town and these iconic engines was not predetermined. At one point, the Directors of The Great Northern Railway were considering Grantham as the centre of their operations; Doncaster could have been just another stop on the railway journey from London to Edinburgh.
34
Early in November 2020, The Friends of Doncaster Museums were informed of an object coming up for auction in London which marked the decision to develop the Great Northern railway hub in Doncaster. In 1846 each railway being developed needed an Act of Parliament to allow it to go ahead. The solicitor Robert Baxter was tasked by the Directors of the GNR to oversee the passage of the Bill which would establish the train company and firmly establish it in Doncaster. He did so and as a result the Mayor, Corporation, and leading citizens presented him with a handwritten testimonial decorated with his coat of arms and encased in a leather folder. The Testimonial thanked Baxter for his efforts; for Doncaster the rest is part of railway history. It was this object which was successfully acquired at the auction. Originally part of the ‘Sir William McAlpine Railway Collection’, the unique object will remain in Doncaster in perpetuity. It is very fitting as Sir William, in 1973, had purchased the Flying Scotsman itself to ensure it would remain in the UK. Thanks to money raised by the Friends of Doncaster Museums and the partnership of The Friends of Doncaster Mansion House, the Testimonial will enter the collection of Heritage Doncaster and in due course will be on display. If you’d like more information about becoming a member of The Friends of Doncaster Museums , please contact chair@friendsofthedoncastermuseums.co.uk The Friends also operate a Gift Membership so if you’d like to mark someone’s birthday or simply want to send family and friends a Christmas Gift,
please contact us on the same address.
