WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE A PARISH COUNCILLOR AND HELP TO MAKE THE PARISH A BETTER PLACE TO LIVE? There is currently a vacancy on Cantley with Branton Parish Council due to a resignation and insufficient nominations being received to call an election. The council can now fill the vacancy by cooption, which is a process whereby the council considers applications from interested persons and can then select someone to fill the seat.

Branton’s Litter Pick Well done to everyone who took part in the Branton Christmas litter pick on Saturday 30th November. We had a very cold, frosty start but it didn’t put anyone off! A round of tea, coffee and mince pies and we were ready! We had 13 volunteers and collected 23 bags of rubbish. Well done and thank you to everyone who gave up their time to help keep our village tidy. Cantley with Branton Parish Council

If you are interested in becoming a parish councillor, please write to the parish council and include a few details of why you would like to become a councillor. Thank you Donations have been amazing and so greatly received and appreciated .I just visited Fishlake last week, heart-breaking to see all the skips with peoples lives in them. Builders vans trying to work, skips everywhere and car transporters now going in to pick up wrecked cars as the roads are still quite shocking. There is mud and a lot of water in places as well as the fields which are underwater. Thank you so much for putting the request for donations in the Arrow, all your readers have really helped make a difference. Thanks, Louise Attenborough Thank you Louise for organising these donations and transporting them on our behalf, what a wonderful, caring person you are. We hope the areas that are affected can return to normal as soon as possible.—The Arrow and readers who donated.

Auckley Parish Council Newsletter January 2020 New Recreation Park at Hayfield Lane Work is progressing at the site, and the children's play area and MUGA will soon be signed off and open for use. Due to extremely wet conditions during Autumn the football field has been fenced off until Spring, when the ground will be de-stoned and seeded. Council is to provide a defibrillator which will be situated inside the car park near the entrance. Auckley Christmas Tree Lights This year Council has arranged for six trees to be festooned with Christmas lights, however, there has been a delay, due to the implementation of new electricity regulations and installation of power points. Hopefully, the lights will be functional in the near future. CAP Meetings Following an increase of anti-social behaviour in the local area, it was decided to hold a series of Community Alcohol Partnership (CAP) meetings with representatives from DMBC, Police, and the four local Parish Councils attending to try and identify the reason for this behaviour. Meetings are held on a regular basis and hopefully will lead to a reduction in incidents. The River Torne The Parish Council wrote twice to the Environment Agency during the Summer when vegetation in the river

became a problem and resulted in the water becoming practically stagnant. On both occasions the Agency arranged for the weed to be cut and this greatly improved the flow of water. Recent heavy rainfall saw the water level rise above the banking, and some adjacent land became seriously flooded. Council contacted the Agency to enquire whether they would consider dredging the river in an attempt to accommodate a larger volume of water, and a reply is awaited.

The Parish Council hopes everyone had a very Merry Christmas and wishes you all a Happy New Year.

Local volunteers needed to help blind and partially sighted people get out and about Guide Dogs are supporting visually impaired people and their families in My Guide scheme to help blind and partially sighted people build their confidence and regain their independence. The MyGuide Service is looking for people who want to make a real difference to the lives of visually impaired people in the Hull area and is now actively recruiting volunteers to spend a few hours a week helping blind or partially sighted people get back into the community. My Guide part of the Guide Dogs Service and it helps people with sight loss get out of their homes, reducing the isolation that many people with sight loss experience, giving greater choice and access to the community. “My Guide volunteers will make a very real difference to the lives of people in our area,” said Alan Precious, MyGuide Volunteer Manager. “Losing your sight is an extremely difficult experience, that leaves many people feeling isolated and alone. This is an opportunity to have a real and positive impact, helping somebody rebuild their life and get out and about again.” The scheme matches blind and partially sighted people with a volunteer usually for three to six months. Volunteers will spend a few hours a week, guiding their partner on trips out to activities that the pair will agree at the start of their relationship. Journeys could be to the shops, to a café or maybe a sports event or any other activity the blind or partially sighted person wants to take part in. The volunteer will also help them to establish lasting relationships with community members who can, in turn, help them get out more. My Guide volunteers will receive some practical training (endorsed by VISION 2020, the umbrella body for organisations focussed on visual impairment), which will give them the skills to confidently guide blind and partially sighted people. Almost anyone can become a My Guide volunteer, as long as they are over 18 and able to commit to a minimum of two hours per week. They will also need to agree to a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check. “Guide Dogs recognises that dogs are not the solution for everyone,” said Alan Precious, for the Hull/ East Riding area. “The MyGuide Service is fantastic and will help to change the lives of people who have become isolated as a result of their sight loss. Volunteering to become a sighted guide is a valuable skill for individuals and it’s a tangible way of making a difference to a blind or partially sighted person’s life today.” By providing volunteers as sighted guides we are also helping service users to take part in social events, hobbies, sports, health & fitness activities, clubs and community activities that may not be suitable for someone with a guide dog. More venues are becoming guide dog friendly but some activities are more suitable for a service users with a MyGuide. The connection developed between a service users and their volunteer, the communication and the sharing of interest, hobbies, exercise and good conversation are all positive ways the service provides added benefit and wellbeing. Helping to tackle loneliness and isolation and encouraging service users to get involved in their communities are all goals for the service. Also fit Alarms To find our how to become a volunteer or how to benefit from the service please contact Alan Precious at MyGuide on 0118 9838753 or Alan.precious@guidedogs.org.uk Alternatively information is available via our website www.guidedogs.org.uk or Follow us on Twitter @gdhumberlincs or www.facebook.com/ YorkLincsEastYorkshireMobilityTeam

DANUM PROBUS CLUB danum probus.co.uk

Danum Probus Club is an organisation for men who have retired or are semi-retired from their profession, business or other employment who want to maintain a social network with others who have similar interests. Danum Probus Club meets on the first and third Mondays of the month at Town Moor Golf Club, Bawtry Road, Belle Vue, Doncaster starting at 10 am. At this meeting we have a speaker, their subjects covering a wide variety of interests. (see www.probusonline.org/danum for the ongoing programme). Ladies and guests are invited to the Club’s Spring and Autumn Lunches and also to the Annual holiday which is usually in late June or thereabouts. Members also have their own lunches in mid summer and December. In the summer months the Crown Green Bowling Seaton play on the Armthorpe Community Centre greens. The Speaker on Monday 18 November Keith Lumley gave a presentation about the Normandy Landings which took place on 6 June 1944 entitled “Breaching the Beaches and Landings and Beyond”. This fascinating talk took us through the years of planning involved in the linvasion, not only the military operation itself, but also the huge amount of intelligence work done to wrong foot the Germans into thinking that the invasion would come at other locations. In addition to the invasion itself, Keith spoke about the Commanders, both military and political, on each side and how their own personalities had affected the result. He said that Eisenhower was selected as the Allied Supreme Commander not for his military virtues, but because he was a great diplomat who was able to get the “glory seekers” such as Patten and Montgomery to work together. Steve Parker and two of his colleagues took us through the history of Drax Power Station from its beginning as effectively two coal burning stations with three turbines each, to the ptesent day when it had four turbines driven by burning biomass to raise steam and two tuning coal when needed. The biomass mostly originates in North America, where waste timber eg branches, sawdust and thinning, material which was formerly burned to get rid of it. This is now pelletised and shipped to the UK, and then transferred by rail on a Just inTime basis. Development works taking place, along with Leeds University, into carbon dioxide capture. In January our speaker on 6 January is Roy Gunson with “The Uncertainty of Mr Heisenberg” the on the 20th we will hold our Annual General Meeting. Any interested men who would like to come to these meeting as a visitor to see what we do, with a view to joining if you like us, please call either George Kirk (07808191211) or Geoff Firth (01302 849734) for more information or come to a meeting and introduce yourself to the President or Secretary at the front table.

Community News Cantley with Branton Parish Council Carol Singing Event.

What a lovely evening we had at Kilham Hall on Wednesday 11th December, to celebrate this annual festive event. It was great to see the hall full of local friendly faces. Once again, we were joined by St Wilfrid’s School Choir who sang beautifully under the instruction and hard work of Mrs Green. Thank you to Branton St Wilfrid’s Head Teacher, Jo Turner, Father Andrew and all the staff and children who came along and supported this event. With the help of the wonderful Barbara and Noreen from Branton Coffee Club, who provided and served us all with teas and coffees, and a raffle with many prizes donated, we managed to raise £179 for the Sheffield Children’s hospital. Thank you to David Chenery, for providing the music accompaniment for the communal singing and Martin Woodward who got in touch with Father Christmas and arranged a very special visit. He had plenty of gifts for the children with treats from Yorkshire Wildlife Park and Laura’s Fudge. Last but no means least, Cantley with Branton WI for providing the mince pies! We hope you all have had a very Merry Christmas. Cantley with Branton Parish Council Photo credit to Helen Dillan Pearson.

Doncaster Rambler’s – A Misson Meander

The thing about Rambler’s local Thursday walks is they’re always on some-ones door step, and today was mine, which meant a lie in. Arriving in good time, on the green in Misson, it was great to see the usual gathering of faithful wonderers, all braced against the wind. Intriguingly Brian our walk leader had brought a guest along, whose milking parlour we would visit on route. Suitably impressed the ten of us set off north out of the village, then turned right towards Birkhouse Farm, and onto Brickyard Lane, then a short diversion took us to the farm. We were told the mixed herd visible in the distance, produced organic milk of the highest standard, which when processed was sold to America. They were one of only a handful of farms in the country able to do this. As we continued our walk Brian explained that much of the area had become flooded in recent weeks, and we would witness for ourselves the results. So it was as we looped round to follow the river Idle back to Misson, acre after acre of flooded fields, some under a metre of water, came into view, and rough estimates suggest it with be March before these fields are dry. It will certainly be worth another visit then, because for a short five mile two hour local walk it hard to beat. Thank you Brian For more information about the Doncaster Ramblers and future activity please visit our Home Page and download full copy of our walk programme https://www.doncasterramblers.org.uk/walks/walksprogramme-printed-version.html And follow us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/ doncasterramblers/ where GPS Maps of many of our past walks can also be found

Here we are into a new year, so let us see what the next 12 months brings. We sincerely hope it will be a happy and healthy one for you all. The new CT scanner unit at Doncaster Royal Infirmary should be up and running in March. It will be exciting to have the new unit finished and for you all to see where your generous donations have gone. At the time of writing (early December) our Memory Tree was in full swing with many memories already attached to the Christmas tree outside Boots. We will let you know how much we collected in Frenchgate Centre for our prostate cancer appeal next month. Our thermometer on the website, which registers the amount of all donations already received since April last year, totalled almost £42,000 at time of writing so we are steadily getting to our goal of £150,000. We are still collecting scarves, unwanted jewellery and any items for raffle or tombola prizes. If you have any items please contact us at 22 Wood Street, Doncaster DN1 3LW (entrance by the side of Kerry Gough Florists), second floor (lift available), Room 209. Tel. 01302 325029. Email: info@dcdt.co.uk. Website: dcdt.co.uk. We are still in desperate need of volunteers to be on our informal fundraising committee and/ or to help out with administration. Please do contact us if you can spare a few hours on a regular basis and come along for an informal chat – you will be made very welcome.

Roxy is a 10-year-old Boxer cross, and she has been at the RSPCA South Yorkshire Animal Centre for 157 days. Roxy is a sweet girl who loves to be around humans; she likes a good run playing with tennis balls. The team promoted Roxy on social media platforms but it seemed that for no good reason Roxy would be spending Christmas at the centre. Every animal gets a Christmas dinner and a stocking full of toys and treats, but it’s just not the same as having home comforts. Then one day a gentleman arrived and very quickly it became clear it was a match. The week before Christmas Roxy was rehomed with her new family. This is just one example of the many RSPCA rehoming stories. Centre staff and volunteers appreciate each and every person who rehomes an animal. Remember your local RSPCA animal centre when you are looking for an addition to the family. During 2019 the RSPCA at Bawtry rehomed over 900 animals. As the charity is self-funded, it is the support of local Doncaster and Rotherham communities that keep the place going. Your local RSPCA team thank you for your support – and wish you a Happy New Year.
