Welcome to the February issue of The Branton & Auckley Arrow.
Ok folks, wrap up warm, February is going to be cold! The first few days of February will see the temperatures drop below freezing. Make sure your car is ready for the cold spell and your boiler is in good working order! The Auckley Show will celebrate 35 years at its present site this year. The committee want to try to reach 1000 exhibits this year (700 in 2018) so we have published a centre page schedule with all 133 classes available (pull out and save). Please take a look and get planning! This is a great opportunity for children to get involved in a range of different activities. Schools break up on Friday 15th February, if you have plans to escape the chill, lucky you, for everyone staying at home, there are some events in this month’s issue to entertain the children. What ever you do, I hope you enjoy some quality family time together. Just to remind residents of Cantley with Branton Parish, the deadline for your feedback on the Multi Use Games Area and other ideas is 30th January. dsmeaton@empoweringmindsmat.uk Last year, RSPCA Doncaster, Rotherham and District Branch spent over 18,500 hours caring for animals brought to us in need; we found homes for over 870 domestic animals and cared for over 350 wildlife; all of which was made possible by generous donations, whether in the form of time, money or items for our shops. We could not survive as a branch without the continued support from our community, so from the team and the animals at your local RSPCA branch, we would like to say a huge ‘thank you’. Going forward, there are many ways to help us with our mission to rehome and rehabilitate animals including volunteering, donating cash or goods, sponsoring us through our Safe Haven programme and attending our events. We have charity shops at Bawtry, Rotherham, Rossington and Thorne. At the Animal Centre we rehome the animals in our care and have a pet shop on site for all your requirements. Community News Thorne Rural Lions Thorne Rural Lions President, Christine Whiteley presented Bethany Morley from Auckley with a Lions International Youth in Service Gold Award at a recent Lions function. Bethany has completed 100 hours of service in the community over a 12 month period. Previously, Bethany has completed an additional 50 hours for a silver award. Congratulations Bethany and thank you for all you hard work and commitment to the community.
Branton Road Incident

I have had a request from a resident to ask for help in finding a driver who was involved in an incident in Branton on Doncaster Road (B1396), next to the bollards beside the junction with The Close. His 13yr old grandchild was hit by a car and has broken both ankles. The incident happened on Tuesday 8th January at 7.45am. The lady, who was driving a white Audi saloon car, did stop and get out of the car, but left without leaving any details. If you have any information which will help, please call Doncaster police quoting incident number 571. Thank you.

Community News On Tuesday 18th December, KHMC Coffee Club celebrated Christmas with a Pie and Pea Lunch.
This annual event was well attended as usual and Noreen Pearson’s Granddaughter, Lara, provided the musical entertainment. Lara, who is a professional singer, was amazing and sang a range of different songs. The dance floor was full at one point. The usual bingo and raffle took place and both Barbara Fussey and Jan Goodband were presented with a thank you card and gift for their commitment to the KHMC. PC Chair, Michelle Sidebottom, thanked them both as did Noreen Pearson, Chair of the KHM committee. The coffee club is every Tuesday 9.30am till 11.30am. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Community News DANUM PROBUS CLUB Danum Probus Club is an organisation for men who have retired or are semi-retired from their profession, business or other employment who want to maintain a social network with others who have similar interests. Danum Probus Club meets on the first and third Mondays of the month at Town Moor Golf Club, Bawtry Road, Belle Vue, Doncaster starting at 10 am. In a change to the published programme, the Club met of Monday 7 January, when Richard Bell gave a presentation about “The Sand House”, a feature in Doncaster from the 1850’s until the Second World War. It was a mansion sized dwelling carved from sandstone and featured a network of tunnels decorated with carvings. It stood north east of Balby Bridge, the site now being occupied by a block of flats. On Monday 21 January the Club held its Annual General Meeting report in next month’s edition. February meetings will be on Monday 4 February when the Leader Brothers will open one of their Mystery Boxes, and Monday 18 February when the topic will be “Medic Behind the Lines” presented by Mike Atherton. Any interested men who would like to come to these meeting as a visitor to see what we do, with a view to joining if you like us, please call either George Kirk (07808191211) or Geoff Firth (01302 849734) for more information.

FINNINGLEY WI We got 2019 off to a good start with our own Burns night celebration, complete with “haggis, neeps and tatties.” It was a great success. Coming up next is a talk from a romantic suspense novelist and in March we are having a chocolate Talk and Taste.

Cantley with Branton Parish Council Christmas Carol Event. This year’s event was again, attended by Branton St Wilfrid’s school choir. The choir arrived along with Mrs McCormack, the school Head Teacher, the Assistant Head, Mrs Turner and School Teacher, Mrs Green. Father Andrew from St Wilfrid’s church was also with us for the whole evening. The children sang beautifully with solo’s from Amber Morley and Lily Waddington. We welcomed a new organist, David Chenery, who played all evening for both the school choir and communal songs. David did a fantastic job and we are very thankful for his support at such short notice. We had some brilliant news as we believed Father Christmas was not going to make it this year. Many thanks to Keith Woods who managed to re arrange Father Christmas’s diary! All the children received sweets and a few jokes from Father Christmas. The raffle raised £126 towards the Sheffield Children’s hospital charity and the Trussell Trust Food Bank charity. Thank you to everyone who donated raffle prizes and to Yorkshire Wildlife Park for the family day pass. A huge thank you to everyone who attended and to Mrs Guest who has worked hard with the choir along with Ms Green, Mrs Guest was not able to stay due to unforeseen circumstance's but the choir did her proud. Also, thankyou to Barbara Fussey and Noreen Pearson from the KHMC for serving teas and coffee and to Parish Councillor David Chorlton for helping to organise the event. Michelle Sidebottom

This year’s Auckley Show will take place on Saturday 17th August 2019, this will be our 35th Year on the current site. In my opinion the heart of the show is the traditional horticultural, preserves, baking, flower arranging and craft competitions. This in recent years has gone from strength to strength and we have seen an increase year on year with over 700 exhibits being entered at the 2018 Show. This I believe is evidence of the strong community spirit we have in Auckley and surrounding villages. There is also evidence that the children’s classes have increased significantly and something the committee wish to encourage further. I have a personal ambition to achieve a total of 1000 exhibits being entered into the show. With this in mind could I ask you to consider taking part in 2019 and encourage others in particular your families to ‘have a go’. It’s free and simple to enter just turn up on the day between 8.30am and 10.45am to stage your exhibits in our dedicated marquee which this year will be even bigger to cater for the enthusiasm you have for this traditional event. To enable you to prepare early I have published this year’s schedule with 133 classes to choose from. Over the years we have developed this to try and provide something for everyone. We are always open and welcome to ideas to improve the schedule. Keep this month’s Arrow magazine safe to refer to later. We are already planning the entertainment and I will update you all as plans progress. Lastly, an S.O.S. appeal Save Our Show. I would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that we fund raise through the monthly draw – The Auckley Show 200 plus club – we currently pay out £100 each month as a prize. Doncaster Rambler’s Cannon Hall and Silkstone Circular It was certainly a case of "Norman's Invasion" as 48 of us gathered at Cannon Hall Farm on a gloriously sunny and crisp morning for our first Tuesday walk of 2019. After a brief introduction and some background history we were soon on our way on this surprisingly undulating circular anti-clockwise walk across mainly grassy fields and along well defined footpaths with clear views emerging on all sides as we gained height. During our coffee stop Norman kindly provided everyone with a piece of his homemade fruit cake (and even an accompanying chunk of cheese) which was much appreciated. Our lunch stop was in Silkstone with the choice of the village pub or the welcoming Pot House Cafe. The sun continued to shine as we completed our circuit back to Cannon Hall, passing the distinctive tower of Cawthorne Church towards the end. This was a great walk to start the new year and everyone enjoyed chatting and soaking up the warming rays. Thanks Norman for being a thoughtful leader (and baker) and to Chris and Lee who shared the backmarking. POI -Cannon Hall - Although there was a house on the site when the Domesday Survey of 1086 was conducted, Cannon Hall picked up its current name from the 13th-century inhabitant Gilbert Canun. By the late 14th century Cannon Hall was in the ownership of the Bosville family of Ardsley, now a suburb in south-east of Barnsley. In 1660 the estate was purchased by John Spencer, a Welsh hay-rake maker. The Spencer family had arrived in Yorkshire from the Montgomeryshire in the Welsh borders, a safer place than Wales for those with Royalist sympathies such as those of the Spencers. The Spencer family became active in the local iron and coal industry - notably under John Spencer (died 1729) who took advantage of the death of his partners to establish control. The family built a huge empire and funding the rebuilding of Cannon Hall. We are thrilled The core of the present Cannon Hall was built at the opening of the 18th century for John Spencer Stanhope, and was enlarged with the addition of wings in 1764–67 by the premier mid-Georgian architect working in Yorkshire, John Carr. Subsequently the wings were heightened, giving the rather high-blocked mass seen today. The last member of the family, Elizabeth, sold the house to Barnsley Council in 1951. Holy Family Finningley catholic church to close. The church on the airport site has been used by local people for many years both during and since the time of the RAF being at Finningley air base. A Catholic chaplain was appointed in 1972 and places of worship were established during the mid-1970s, with buildings for Anglican, Roman Catholic and Nonconformist use. Until 1991 the Chaplain was from the Royal Air Force but in that year it was decided by the RAF to appoint the priest from the local parish of Christ the King in Rossington as Chaplain. Church services for various denominations were held on the site in various multipurpose buildings; the Anglican Church built their own chapel in around 1976. After the site was decommissioned by the Royal Air Force in 1996 it was bought by Peel Holdings. The diocese of Hallam then took responsibility from the RAF diocese and Holy Family became part of the parish at Rossington. The Anglican church building was retained and leased from Peel Holdings by the Catholic parish of Christ the King, Rossington as a chapel-of-ease. Much of the remainder of the site has been developed for commercial use as Robin Hood Airport and for office accommodation, leaving some as yet undeveloped areas near the church. Due to re-organisation of places of worship by the diocese of Hallam two chapels in Doncaster are set to close in the near future. One of them is Holy Family, the other at Carcroft. It is expected by the Bishop that worshipers will return to their ‘mother churches’ which currently provide priests to carry out services in these chapels. Alongside this, there is to be merging of some parishes, and locally the parish of Christ the King Rossington and St Paul’s Cantley will become one. Rossington currently is the catholic parish for Auckley, Finningley, Blaxton and Bawtry. Cantley covers Branton and Bessacarr. For the immediate future a priest will remain in each of these parishes to allow time for them to prepare for the change. It look like the chapel at Holy Family Finningley will close at Easter, with a final service presided by the Bishop of Hallam on Thursday 25th April at 7pm. You will be most welcome to attend. Regular Saturday evening masses will be held as usual at 6pm until the Passion (Palm Sunday) on the weekend of 13th April. Easter weekend masses, from Good Friday will be at Christ the King. It is not known what Peel Holdings will do with the building once it is decommissioned by the church. It has been a point of meeting for so many over the years it would be a shame if it disappeared. Help support your local hospice St John’s Hospice in Balby, is a vital community asset, helping Doncaster residents and their families in their time of need. It runs a day hospice as well as an inpatient unit. Do you have a loved one who needs these services? If so, please speak to your GP. Run by Rotherham Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust, staff at the hospice continually fundraise with all money pumped into patient care and support and to make patients’ lives more comfortable. Here’s some feedback from loved ones: “Thank you for making my relative feel safe and comfortable at the most awful and frightening time in his life” “We would like to say thank you so much for taking very good care of my relative and also her family and visitors. Nothing was too much trouble at a time when we all needed help and support, it was priceless”. The hospice, which is based off Weston Road at Balby, is currently recruiting for volunteers. Volunteers help in a range of ways including manning the reception, drivers to bring day patients to the hospice, gardening and much more. Fancy volunteering? If so, call Lindsey Richards, who manages the volunteers, on 01302 796662. Lindsey is also the hospice’s fundraiser. Money has been raised is so many unusual ways over the years, from parachute jumping and school reunions to selling a CD. AUCKLEY PARISH COUNCIL February 2019 Newsletter Parish Precept The Parish Council is funded by entirely by the Parish Precept. This is the money DMBC collects on behalf of the Council and is used for the benefit of residents in the Parish of Auckley. The sum of ÂŁ39,000 has been decided as precept for the 2019/20 financial year.
Christmas Carol Singing The annual singing of carols was held on 11th of December at the Eagle and Child car park. Grateful thanks are extended to Jason Fletcher who very kindly installed a gazebo and served sherry and mince pies. The singing was accompanied by the Armthorpe Elmfield Band. This was a poignant occasion because Haydn Griffiths, their conductor for many years, had died a short while before the event.
Alternate Venue for Meetings Council is currently consulting with the Head Teacher of the Hayfield Lane Primary School with a view to holding some meetings in the school, thereby making it more convenient for residents in the Hayfield area to attend.
Police 101 Telephone Service The Police advise that their 101 telephone service is being reviewed, following reports that some members of the public are having difficulty speaking to a receptionist. If the line is busy, callers will now be given a ring-back slot to ensure that their call is not missed. An alternative is to email the incident which will then be recorded.
New Christmas Lighting Currently two Christmas Trees in the Parish are festooned with lights over the festive season. Council is looking into the possibility of providing some additional Christmas decorations and is seeking advice from a firm with expertise in this field.
Neighbourhood Plan Meetings A dedicated group of residents, plus two members of Council continue to meet and make progress with the Neighbourhood Plan. Thanks are particularly due to the Chair and Secretary for all the hard work and commitment they continue to give to the project. The next two meetings of the Group will be held on Monday, 4th February and Tuesday, 5th March 2019, both commencing at 6.30 p.m. at the Auckley Parish Centre.
