Tuesday 17th December, Branton Coffee Club held its annual Pie and Pea Christmas lunch in Kilham Hall. An earlier start than usual and a later finish at 1.30pm. The event was well attended by Coffee Club members who were spruced up for the occasion in Christmas jumpers and 'best bibs and tuckers'! A shout out to the lovely Jean who started the ball rolling with Bingo - at a young 95, Jean is still coming up with amusing rhymes for the numbers! Alex then entertained for an hour with well known songs and Festive Tunes, encouraging much audience participation with tambourine shaking, singing and dancing and, yes, a few of our ladies were game enough to 'shake a festive tail feather'! Lunch of meat pie, peas and potatoes was next up, followed by a selection of gateaux and plum bread with cheese. We even had time for Janet's Festive Quiz before concluding with Sheila's bonanza Festive Raffle! Thank you to all who attended, making the morning a fantastic success.

Community News The Co-op Charity Christmas Concert on 14th December 2019 was a wonderful evening of Music and Co-operation which featured the Doncaster Wheatsheaf Singers and Hatfield & Askern Colliery Band. The performers, The Minster staff, Co-op Food, Funeralcare and our local Co-op Member Pioneers all worked together both before the event and on the night to provide a wonderful evening's entertainment and festive refreshments to a full house at Doncaster Minster. This was yet again a fantastic turnout to support a great cause. Proceeds from the concert raised £1300 for Doncaster Cancer Detection Trust and a cheque was presented to members of the charity in Doncaster Minster on Friday 3rd January 2020. The Co-op had also provided a 25ft Christmas tree for Doncaster Minster which acted as a Memory Tree throughout December, raising a further £134 for the Minster's own "Tea and Toilet" Appeal" Dorothy Miller, Chairman of the Doncaster Wheatsheaf Singers who organised the concert wished to extend her thanks to all involved in making this event such a highlight of the Christmas celebrations in Doncaster. Community News A drop in was arranged at Kilham Hall Meeting Rooms in Branton on Monday 13th January at 6pm to give residents the opportunity to speak to our local PCSO’s (Police Community Support Officer). A few residents attended and asked if there was anything that could be done regarding cars parking on the pavement, restricting access and in some cases blocking access to the pavement for pedestrians. The PCSO’s will keep an eye on this and asked if residents could be mindful of pedestrians access when parking on the pavement. Speeding on Doncaster road was also discussed and the PCSO’s are trying to set up Community Speed Watch schemes across the area. If speeding is a problem near you and you want to help, then please email SYP on the address below and they will get back to you with details. doncastercentrallpt@southyorks.pnn.police.uk.

Year 2
Auckley School News
This term we have been learning all about Katie Morag. In Year 2, we have been able to find out a great deal about life on the Isle of Struay and we have learnt about many important people from the stories of Katie Morag. During this term, we had a special Katie Morag day in school. We all dressed up as a character from the stories. Our outfits looked fantastic! On the day, we worked in groups on lots of fun activities. We were able to make a paper boat to get to the island, we made shortbread, we made kilts and we produced some superb artwork for a special display. This was something we all very much enjoyed. Along with this exciting day, we were able to immerse ourselves in some exciting books. We all loved learning the stories ‘Meerkat Mail’ and ‘Emily Brown and the Thing’. Learning these stories inspired us to produce many wonderful pieces of writing of our own.
Nursery
Ronnie the Rhino On the 20th November we had a very special visitor. Ronnie the Rhino came to visit from Leeds Rhino Rugby club. We gave him lots of high fives and cuddles. What a lovely surprise! Talk 4 Writing This term has been super busy and the children have been very artistic. In Literacy, we have been learning the story ‘Brown Bear, Brown Bear.’ Together we have broken the story down, drawn pictures that represent the words and re-told our own story based on this specific story. Just look at how amazing their story maps are!
In Year 6 this term, we have been learning all about World War 2. To begin our new topic, we had a visit from a World War 2 expert, ‘Lee’. He introduced us to a variation of original artefacts including: an old radio, an air raid siren, (this was SO loud!) and a gas mask. We took part in many activities such as water pumping (to put out pretend fires!), collecting bombs and carrying sand bags. We had a fun and informative day. In English, we examined extracts from Anne Frank’s diary as well as heart-breaking letters from soldiers serving in the war. We studied the book ‘Goodnight, Mr Tom’ in guided reading. The words ‘mindblowing’ and ‘heart-warming’ were just some of the words used by Year 6 to describe the tale about a young boy who became an evacuee. As well as studying what life was like for soldiers during this time, we investigated the role of women during the war and looked at how resilience played a key part in winning the war. A huge thank you to all those who attended the Christmas carol evening at Kilham Hall. We had so many positive comments about the quality of the children singing and the hall was absolutely packed out. The children were a credit to the school and were rewarded by a visit from Santa at the end of the night. Another great success was the ‘Carols Around the Tree’ event where the children sang a mixture of carols and more recent Christmas songs to visitors in school while they enjoyed a cup of tea and a mince pie. They sounded absolutely amazing and again the audience commented on the quality of their voices. We would like to thank Mrs Green for her hard work producing such wonderful events in preparation for Christmas.
As part of our half-termly maths mornings, the children were linking maths to art in order to create a piece of art based on mathematics. There were a wide range of activities across school: children using polygons to create pictures; lines of symmetry to create pictures of animals; times tables knowledge to create an image on a coordinate axis; knowledge of shapes and lines of symmetry to fold card to create different shapes and turn these into a tessellation; creating a cardioid using prior knowledge of shape and rotation and creating tessellations using polygons. Fishlake after the flooding:
After the devastation of the floods on Friday 8 November 2019 which saw around 80% of properties in the village affected, the Fishlake community continues to deal with the challenge of returning to normal. It has undoubtedly been a very challenging, difficult time for all concerned. They have seen a visit from The Prime Minister, HRH The Prince of Wales and also received coverage from lots of local and national media. ‘We are proud as a community HRH The Prince of Wales and Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of South Yorkshire meeting emergency workers in Fishlake, December 2019. of how we have pulled together and supported each other and we will continue to do so. We are hugely grateful for the support shown to us by neighbouring villages and we are overwhelmed by the number of messages of support received from across the country. There is still a long way to go before we are anything like back to normal. We need to persist with information as to how and why this happened and to work to prevent this happening again’. Pam Webb, Fishlake business owner. St Cuthbert's Church, The Old Butcher's Café and the Hare and Hounds have all done a tremendous job supporting the community as well as the essential/emergency workers who visited the village. Our thoughts are very much with those residents who are still unable to return to their homes. We hope life returns to normal for everyone as soon as possible and that we all continue to support the businesses there. Work to find a solution is ongoing, all must be done to avoid this disaster ever happening again.
