Welcome to the December issue of The Branton & Auckley Arrow Well, how did that happen! Dear me, it’s nearly Christmas, I wish Spring would come as quickly as Christmas does!

We have all the local fayres and services throughout December in this month’s issue. It’s lovely to have some school news from Branton St Wilfrid’s, I know this is a busy time of year for primary schools but it’s lovely to see the variety of things that are currently happening in school. Branton and Old Cantley residents will have received this month, a survey asking for their views and opinions on a Multi Use Games Area at Kilham Hall, please complete this form asap and return to the Branton Premier Store. The deadline for the January issue is Wednesday 12th December. The January issue will be distributed the last weekend in December. Do Not Accept Anti-social Behaviour Report it... On Monday 12th November, we discovered our son’s football net, that we have left on our back field at Poppyfields in Branton for the last 4 years, had been damaged so badly, we may need to replace it altogether. These nets are expensive but robust, the person or people responsible have put a lot of effort into the damage they have caused. What is so upsetting is that we leave the net on the field so everyone can enjoy using it, and lots of people do. There was a similar incident at Kilham Hall, where the nets were vandalised within a week of being assembled and thankfully, Danny from BFC came to the rescue and donated the damaged parts and re-erected the damaged net. We all need to be vigilant, Cantley with Branton Parish Council are increasing security at Kilham Hall recreational ground as we are determined that those who are intent on destruction and unsocial behaviour, do not spoil everyone else’s enjoyment of the facilities we have in our village. I am proud to live in Branton, I love this village and care deeply about the people who live here. If you see any behaviour which is of concern, please report it to 101. You may need to hold for sometime, but if that is the worst part of reporting these problems, it is well worth it. The police and DMBC will not get involved if they know nothing about it. You can also report it online at http://www.doncaster.gov.uk/ Thanks Michelle Sidebottom

Kilham Hall Update…On Tuesday

13th November, Kilham Hall Coffee Morning celebrated the hall’s 9th Anniversary with coffee and cake. Lots of fun was had by all with the usual events such as bingo, monologue and lots of chatter.

If you would like to join our coffee club, please feel free to visit, we are open every Tuesday morning in term time, 10 till 11.30am. You will be very welcome. On Monday 12th, Kilham Hall Management Committee held their 9th AGM and we were all sad to hear the Barbara Fussey, who has been a very active member of the Committee since it was formed, is stepping down from her role as Treasurer and as a member of the committee. Both Cantley with Branton Parish Council and Kilham Hall Management Committee would like to thank Barbara for all her hard work and commitment to the Hall and our community, she will be greatly missed. I am pleased to say, Barbara will still attend the weekly coffee morning. After the meeting, KHMC Chair, Noreen Pearson confirmed that Jan Goodband will also be stepping down as a member. Again, The Parish Council and KHMC would like to thank Jan for everything she has done whilst being a member and wish her all the very best for the future. Amy Ducker Jacques joined the Committee this month and has taken on the role as Treasurer. On Saturday 27th October, The Kilham Hall Management Committee held their annual Pumpkin Party at the Hall for the local primary school aged children. Krazy Karen entertained the children with dancing and party games and Magic faces provided the most amazing face make up. There were some scary outfits and some beautifully carved pumpkins. The children had hot dogs and pumpkin cakes and all left with a party bag. This was my last pumpkin party as my own children have all moved on but I am delighted to say that Amy Ducker Jacques will be taking over from the event next year. Look out for the tickets when they come available, Kilham Hall Management Committee heavily subsidise the party to thank you all for your support throughout the year. Please look out for the tickets when they come available next year. Big thank you to Amy, for helping me to organise the event and to Kate Chorlton, Janine Innes, Gavin, Amy’s husband and Angela Morley who all helped out on the day and helped to take down the decorations after. Thank you to Hardy, Hayley and Dawn at the Branton Premier Store for selling the tickets for us. Best pumpkin winners below.

AUCKLEY PARISH COUNCIL

November - December 2018 Newsletter Christmas Carol Singing - You are invited to come and join the singing of Christmas carols on Tuesday, 11th December 2018 at 7.00 p.m. This event will be held under cover in the Eagle and Child car park, Auckley, with musical accompaniment provided by the Armthorpe Elmfield Band. Neighbourhood Plan - Two Parish Councillors attend meetings with residents of the Parish Neighbourhood Plan Group, and information regarding the Call for Sites is being progressed. Two members of the Group have taken on the roles of Chairman and Secretary, and thanks are expressed for all the work they undertake in this regard. Traffic Problems - Council has urged DMBC to provide the promised pedestrian crossing near the School/ College on Hurst Lane, Auckley. Originally this was scheduled for the August school holidays but was delayed until the October half term, and we are now advised that the work might be carried out during the 2019 Easter holidays. Obviously the Parish Council is extremely concerned about these delays and is doing all it can to expedite the provision. Residents will have noticed that work has commenced on Hurst Lane for the new access into the Yorkshire Wildlife Park extension. Efforts have been made to prevent this happening, but DMBC's Planning Committee considered it could proceed. Development in the Parish - There are concerns, in view of all the new build taking place in the Parish, that traffic is becoming more of an issue, as is space for pupils in the Auckley Schools, and general practitioner patient capacity. In the past the Clinical Commissioning Group has been contacted to hopefully provide a further doctor's surgery, but currently there is no news on this matter. Yorkshire Wildlife Park Meetings - A member of Council will represent the Parish Council at quarterly consultation meetings to be held at the Wildlife Park Provision of Play Facilities - Discussions are ongoing with representatives from Peel Holdings regarding the provision of play facilities along Hayfield Lane, and the latest advice is that work on the site will probably start in January/February 2019. Provision of Seats to Commemorate the End of World War I - Two seats with poppy decorations are to be provided in the Parish to mark 100 years from the end of World War I. These will be sited at Riverside Park and the new recreation ground at Hayfield Lane. S106 Funds - Information is currently awaited from Ward Councillors regarding S106 monies for Auckley Parish. Section 106 (S106) Agreements are legal agreements between the Local Authority and developers, and are drafted when it is considered that a development will have significant impacts on the local area that cannot be moderated by means of conditions attached to a planning decision. S106 monies were used to partially fund the play equipment at Riverside Park, and hopefully some funds from current developments in the Parish will eventually be made available for other local projects

MEMBERS OF AUCKLEY PARISH COUNCIL WOULD LIKE TO WISH EVERYONE A MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR

DECEMBER 2018 - LATEST NEWS Christmas Carol Singing This will take place on Wednesday 12 December 2018 at 6.30 p.m. at Kilham Hall, Kilham Lane, Branton DN3 3PF with Branton St Wilfrid’s School choir in attendance. Festive refreshments provided by the local WI and soft drinks for children will be available at a small charge. A raffle will be held and all proceeds raised will be donated to the Trussell Trust Food bank in Doncaster and The Children’s Hospital in Sheffield. As in previous years, arrangements have been made for festive lighting to be displayed on the Christmas tree on the corner of Glen Road and Doncaster Road. Sianne’s Butterfly Trail Enhancements Grateful thanks are extended to Auckley Parish Council and Yorkshire Butterfly Society for financial donations to fund the cost of an information board containing detail of butterfly species. Special thanks are extended to Sarah White for designing and arranging the art work for the board which is now in situ adjacent to the butterfly trail. Residents are also thanked for giving up their Saturday morning on 13 October 2018 to undertake some general tidying up of the butterfly trail and for the planting of around six thousand bulbs to provide a spring floral display. Your Views on the Provision of a Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) for Kilham Lane Recreation Ground As part of the ongoing consultations with residents regarding the proposed provision of a MUGA a questionnaire is being issued to all properties in Branton and the surrounding areas of the parish to seek your views. It would be greatly appreciated if you could take the time to complete and return the leaflet with your views to either the Premier Store at Ava Court or email to the Clerk at cwppc@outlook.com The response will be considered at the February 2019 meeting of the parish council. New Fencing to Kilham Lane Recreation Ground and Car Park An amount of wooden fencing at the entrance to the recreation ground and to path between the car park and perimeter hedge is to replaced and parking bollards provided to prevent damage to fencing occurring. Users of the hall may experience some minor disruption for a short period whilst the work is undertaken and inconvenience caused is regretted. Consideration will be given to replacing further sections of the wooden fencing as and when financial resources are available. Parking on Glen Road, Branton The parish council has been made aware that residents are concerned that cars are parking indiscriminately on and around Glen Road thereby causing difficulties for vehicles entering and leaving the road and in particular preventing easy access for emergency service vehicles. In the interests of everyone’s safety please park responsibly around this area. Provision of a Wreath and Donation to the Royal British Legion A poppy wreath has again been purchased by the parish council for the local school use and a donation made to the Royal British Legion to mark Remembrance Day and the centenary of the end of World War One.

The parish council would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. 22

DANUM PROBUS CLUB Danum Probus Club is an organisation for men who have retired or are semi-retired from their profession, business or other employment who want to maintain a social network with others who have similar interests. Danum Probus Club meets on the first and third Mondays of the month at Town Moor Golf Club, Bawtry Road, Belle Vue, Doncaster starting at 10 am. On Monday October 15 George Clarke gave us a presentation entitled “The Boer War”. To the surprise of many of us present, we found out that there had been two Boer Wars, the first in 1880-1 and the second in 1899-1902. It is this second one which we recall as THE Boer War, and indeed most of the presentation was about that one. But in the first one, the British won which resulted in the Boers setting up their own territory in The Orange Free State and Transvaal. In the later war the British suffered some bad defeats, and the result was basically a draw. But in the General Election which followed months later in the UK, the Liberal Party came to power under Lloyd George, and gave in to most of the Boer demands, so the Afrikaners came into power and stayed their until the birth of Mandela’s Rainbow Nation. The Ladies’ and Guests Lunch was held at the Old Bell, Barmby Moor on Thursday 18 October. It was a very enjoyable occasion as usual. Then On 5 November Malcolm Walpole was in “The Search for the Jaguar’. This was another of his excellent audio-visual presentations with the highlight being a Jaguar hunting, finding and killing a Brazilian crocodile in a river, and the trying to haul the carcass up the river bank.

Mobile Foot Health Care by Kerry

On 3 December the title of the presentation is “The Silver Screen”, and the Members’ Christmas Lunch will take place on 17 December at Town Moor Golf Club. Any interested men who would like to come to these meeting as a visitor to see what we do, with a view to joining if you like us, please call either George Kirk (07808191221) or John Gregory (01302 532032) for more information

Doncaster Rambler’s Open Fields of Dreams - Laxton Bobble hats and thermals were very much in evidence as 40 of us met at the Visitor's Centre in Laxton "England's Last Open Field Village". After an introduction from Nige and some background history from Rob, we set off through the rustic village and soon came across the remains of a motte and bailey castle before heading north into Egmanton where we enjoyed our coffee at the church with its spectacularly ornate rood screen. We then headed off west and began the gentle climb past Kirton Wood and up to enjoy the views from Golden Hill - the highest point in the area. A southerly bearing took us over newly ploughed fields and good tracks to our lunchtime stop in Kneesall. Many of us enjoyed another churchyard refreshment stop before heading to the Hayloft Cafe. The teas and pastries were good even if we did have to sit outside as the cafe was full. Our afternoon was a shorter ramble along good tracks and paths but into the teeth of an increasingly nithering breeze making our short, warm car journey home all the more comforting. We all enjoyed this bracing walk in rolling countryside and pretty villages. Thanks Nige and Rob for looking after us all and Jeremy and Dave for backmarking. Dave Binnington POI Laxton - Laxton is best known for having the last remaining working open field system in the United Kingdom. Fields, divided into strips, are farmed in common among the landowners of the village.[3] Today, there are three open fields remaining; the Mill Field, the South Field and the West Field. Its name is recorded first in the Domesday Book as Laxintone, and may come from Anglo-Saxon Leaxingtūn, meaning the "farmstead or estate of the people of a man called Leaxa". The village has the remains of a Norman motte and bailey castle (Laxton Castle) and is also the site of the Beth Shalom Holocaust Centre. In addition, there are the remnants of a substantial system of fish-ponds, presumed to have belonged to the castle or to the manor house built later on the site of it, two mediæval mill mounds, and ridge-and-furrow earthworks. Egmanton - Egmanton church is best known for the Shrine of Our Lady of Egmanton contained within the church itself. A pilgrimage takes place to commemorate the shrine. Egmanton Castle consists of the remains of a Motte and Bailey style castle. It is commonly known as Gaddick Hill.

Branton St Wilfrid’s C of E Primary School News

Remembrance Remembrance is a very important part of our curriculum at Branton St Wilfrid’s. traditionally Year 6 prepare and lead our Remembrance Act of Worship and this year was no exception. The pupils lead a moving tribute to all those who have served our country, relfecting on the changes that this terrible confilct have brought to our conuntry. This year we were joined by members of the local community and parishioners of St Wilfrid’s Parish Church Cantley as well as parents and grandparents of pupils at Branton St Wilfrid’s Primary School which made the event even more special. Mrs Brittain led the work doen on the Remembrance Memorial by the front entrance of school, and pupils worked together to create this beautiful display. Up, Up and Away! Year 2 have been really enjoying their space topic . We have written information texts all about the different planets and put them together to create a class book. In art we have studied at a starry night by Van Gogh and practiced colour mixing skills, before creating our own starry night painting. In history, we are looking at the life of Neil Armstrong and why he is a significant individual. We will be writing a biography all about his life. In ICT we created our own animations about a rocket flying to the moon. Do you want to be friends? On Thursday 25th October, Class R invited their grownups into school to share their learning about their topic 'Do you want to be friends?'. The children shared the books that they have been reading and lots of photographs from their first half term at school. The children then shared their workbooks with the grown-ups and they had a chance to have a look around the classroom. The children really enjoyed showing off their learning and the grown-ups loved seeing what the children had been up to at school.

Confirmation Mass On Monday 5th November we were joined by Bishop Glynn of Beverley and Father Andrew for our Confirmation Mass. Nine pupils and one member of the local community were Confirmed during the service. Father Andrew holds Confirmation Classes in school in the Autumn Term. If you wish to find out more, please do not hesitate to contact school on 01302 537344, or Father Andrew directly at St Wilfrid’s Parish Church, Cantley on 01302 285316. The Branton Big Draw! Branton St Wilfrid’s recently participated in the Branton Big Draw event where each class looked at the work of an international artist and then each pupil created their own piece in a similar style. This was an extremely successful event and the children really broadened their understanding of the world and improved their art work by focusing on a specific skill. Year 3 had a hugely successful week and thoroughly enjoyed looking at the work of Frank Stella. Frank Stella is an American artist who creates incredible sculptures taking work from 2D to 3D. In RE, Class 3 have been learning all about Hinduism and have been particularly enjoying studying the festival of Diwali. One of the main factors they really enjoyed looking at was Rangoli patterns. As a class, they decided that they would like to base their final sculpture on Rangoli patterns in the style of Frank Stella. All children created a beautiful, colourful piece of art and together then turned their pieces from a 2D drawing into a stunning 3D piece of art work, which together they were extremely proud of. Patronal Festival at St Wilfrid’s Parish Church, Cantley On Friday 12th October we celebrated our Patronal Festival (Saint Wilfrid’s Day). We marked this with a Mass in the evening when we were joined by the Bishop of Beverley, Bishop Glyn Webster. Some of the children from our School Choir came along to Church to sing some worship songs and hymns before and during the service. The contribution the children made helped to make the evening a very happy, special and memorable occasion, and we are so grateful to them. By Father Andrew Howard
