Welcome to the December issue of The Branton & Auckley Arrow.

Ho Ho Ho… It’s the month of mince pies! Oh how I love December (and mince pies). This month’s Arrow has all the latest information on what’s on this month, including local church services and times. Our local public houses are offering a Christmas fayre menu, The Eagle and Child’s menu looks delicious and the Harvey Arm’s have one too. Yorkshire Wildlife Park have their Christmas Fair over 2 weekends in December, featuring live entertainment and music as well as a festive pantomime. Check their website for details www.yorkshirewildlifepark.com. The recent floods have dominated the news recently, the communities affected have our thoughts and wishes for a rapid recovery. It’s great to see local people doing what they can to help with transporting donations. If you have any donations, please leave them with Louise at Attenbrough Cars in Branton up until the end of November. The deadline for the January issue is Wednesday 11th

29th November 2019

Kilham Hall Management Committee Annual Halloween Party

What a fantastic time was had by all at this year’s Kilham Hall Halloween Party. Held on Halloween itself, the party started at 2pm and Krazy Karen had the hall rockin with fun, music and lots of dancing. Natalie from Magic Faces provided the fantastic scary and some very beautiful face make up. The wonderful Burger Jims made sure there was enough pizza for all!. A fabulous start to Halloween and everyone was raring to go trick or treating after. Although KHMC cover the cost, events like this need volunteers and Kilham Hall Management Committee member, Amy Ducker Jacques took the lead in organising this years party. Amy was supported by Michelle Abell, Nadine Griffin, Amy Smedly & Claire Cuttriss, as well as many other parents who attended the event, who helped out and tidied up afterwards. A huge thank you to Amy and everyone who took part including Branton Premier for handling tickets. Kilham Hall Management Committee.

December is usually a time of reflection (in between the hectic preparations for Christmas!) and we look back on a very busy year. With your help we were able to inform DRI at the beginning of the year that we had the money for another CT scanner. The new CT unit should be operational by March 2020 and we will keep you updated. In April we launched our prostate cancer appeal for a £150,000 biopsy machine, which at the time of writing (beginning of November) had reached £40,000. We are very fortunate to have the continuing support of so many groups, organisations and individuals who fundraise and offer help in many ways. Also our lovely friendly volunteers (we have no paid staff) who do so much during the year, without whose unstinting loyalty we would not be able to function. Our annual Memory Tree event in the Frenchgate Centre continues during December until Friday, 20th December. We are downstairs outside Boots from 10am to 3pm Monday to Saturday. Please come along and see us, have a chat and buy a token in memory of your loved one. If you would like to get in touch with us our contact details are: 22 Wood Street, Doncaster DN1 3LW (entrance by the side of Kerry Gough Florists), second floor (lift available), Room 209. Tel. 01302 325029. Email: info@dcdt.co.uk. Website: dcdt.co.uk. Thank you all so much for your generosity, friendship and help. Our charity strives to raise funds to help faster detection and improve cancer treatment for local people. We wish you all a very happy Christmas and hopefully a healthy New Year.

The children loved using Oreo biscuits to represent the different phases of the moon. They have also been creative completing their Egyptian masks with a luxurious golden colour.

Year 6 On the last afternoon of the half term, we had our very first ‘Healthy Minds’ enrichment afternoon to promote health and wellbeing. During this session, the children enjoyed art therapy, yoga and guided meditation. As we fully understand the importance of promoting the well-being of everybody, we plan to repeat this session. We are interested in volunteers who feel they can offer any sessions to the children. www.cantleywithbrantonparish.co.uk Christmas Carol Singing – Wednesday 11 December 2019 at 6.30 pm. This will take place on the above date at Kilham Hall, Kilham Lane, Branton DN3 3PF with Branton St Wilfrid’s School choir in attendance. Festive refreshments including soft drinks for children provided by Branton Coffee Club and mince pies provided by the local WI will be available at a small charge. A raffle will be held and the proceeds raised will be donated to charity. Christmas Lighting Displays As in previous years arrangements have been made for festive lighting to be displayed on the Christmas tree on the corner of Glen Road and Doncaster Road. An order had been placed with DMBC to replace the existing tree for a more suitable one. Much work has been undertaken to explore the possibility of providing illuminated Christmas decorations from some of the lampposts along Doncaster Road and in other areas of the parish. Unfortunately due to changes in electrical regulations some lampposts are now deemed unsuitable and DMBC are still awaiting approval from Northern Power Grid. On this basis regrettably it will not be possible for any new decorations to be provided this year. Provision of a Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) for Kilham Hall Park Following consultation with residents at the October parish council meeting a final specification has been submitted to DMBC to obtain the necessary approval to progress the work, obtain formal planning consent and seek contractors. It is expected that the project will be completed in the autumn of 2020. Storage extension for Kilham Hall Planning consent is being sought and once this has been obtained work will commence on seeking a contractor to undertake the work. It is hoped that this will be completed in late spring/ summer in preparation for the MUGA to house the additional equipment for tennis etc. Road Safety Issues The parish council is mindful of the concerns raised by residents following a number of road traffic incidents in Branton and Old Cantley. A meeting has been requested with DMBC Highway Officers but this has been declined at the present time. Notification has been received that a survey is being undertaken on the road surface at Old Cantley to ensure its suitability and an update is awaited. Finningley Ward Councillors are aware of the concerns and will continue to press for improvements to be made. Keeping Branton Tidy – Next Litter Pick Saturday 30 November 2019 Volunteers in Branton have arranged a further litter pick subject to fine weather on the day and will meet at Kilham Hall Meeting Rooms at 9.30 am. Grateful thanks are extended to those offering to take part for the benefit of the village. Provision of a Wreath and Donation to the Royal British Legion A poppy wreath has again been purchased by the parish council for the local school use and a donation made to the Royal British Legion to mark Remembrance Day. Wifi Facility at Kilham Hall and Meeting Rooms Anyone hiring Kilham Hall or the parish council meeting room can now make use of free wifi. For bookings please contact the Kilham Hall Booking Clerk details can be found on the parish council website.

The parish council would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. To advertise please call 07795 387937 or 01302 534256

Doncaster Rambler’s Are You Going to Clarborough Fair? With the road closed just beyond Bawtry by flooding 20 of us made our way to Clayworth via Ranskill and Mattersey. There was time to visit the Traquair Murals in the church before the start. After Jeemy's briefing we caught up on the news of absent friends - caused injuries (Tony, Dave) and flooding (Chris) - before setting off under overcast skies. Soon, as promised, the skies cleared and we had blue skies for a couple of hours. We had our coffee stop in North Wheatley before following tracks to Clarborough, where we had lunch in the churchyard. A local bellringer, working there, invited us in to see the wonderful improvements recently made to the inside the church - tiled floor with underfloor heating, fancy lighting, a new organ, etc. Near the porch is an old yew tree, mentioned in the Domesday Book. Drinks in the Kings Arms were followed by a 4-mile walk alongside the Chesterfield Canal back to Clayworth. Thanks to Jeremy for an interesting and to Peter for backmarking. By David Gadd POI St. Peter's Church The church is located along Wiseton Road which runs through the village. The tower of the 12th century St Peter's Church, dedicated to St Peter has many old historical inscriptions, it also has a Saxon base surmounted in turn by masonry with Norman windows and a Perpendicular battlemented top. The church was restored in 1874. The oldest memorial in the church is a floorstone which holds a worn inscription to a rector, dating to 1448. The Traquair murals are located in the church. Completed in 1905 by Scottish artist Phoebe Anna Traquair, these are one of only two mural pieces by her outside Scotland, and are the largest mural work in the East Midlands. They were later restored in 1996 by Elizabeth Hirst. Clayworth's war memorial is dedicated to the 12 soldiers from Clayworth who died during the Great War and the 6 who were killed in the Second World War. The names are borne on a roll of honour inside St. Peter's Church. St John the Baptist's Church Clarborough This is a Grade I listed Church of England parish church dating from the 13th century. It was restored in 1874 by James Fowler of Louth. The 1086 Domesday Book does not mention a church at Clarborough. There is evidence that a church was established by 1103, as half of its income was donated by William de Lovetot. The original building began construction in 1258 when Sewal de Bovil, the Archbishop of York, stipulated that the vicar of Clarborough should have the altarage, with the toft and croft lying next to the churchyard, and the tithes of the inclosed crofts of the town. The parish church of St John the Baptist was founded in 1260 which, with Manor Farm near the church, became the focus of the village. A churchyard yew tree is possibly over 1,000 years old.
