Welcome to the August issue of The Branton & Auckley Arrow. Never mind England, we are still behind you! The youngest team in the tournament did very well, getting further than most. I am sure the Euros will be something for us all to get excited about. May I make a small apology for this month’s Arrow? I have completely indulged myself and you will find lots of articles focusing on the community of Branton! June and July were packed full of events from Branton St Wilfrid’s PTA Summer Fayre, Hayfield Prom, Litter Picks and the Kilham Hall recreational field official open event celebrating our new park and Sianne’s Butterfly Trail. All of these events have been attended, not only by residents who live in our Parish but by the wider community. It makes me feel really proud to live in a village where people really care and neighbouring villages are happy to visit and get involved in our events. Next month the focus will undoubtedly turn to Auckley and the amazing effort made by so many Auckley residents to hold yet another Auckley Show. I will be there taking photos, if you have any special photographs you would like to share, please forward them on to me. The deadline for the September issue of the Branton and Auckley Arrow is 15th August. The September issue will be delivered by 31st August. Best Wishes Michelle Sidebottom

On a Beautiful Day In June… The PTA hosted their bi-annual Summer Fayre and what a success if was! From traditional fayre activities such as the Tombola and Splat The Rat to Tough Mudder, Ice Bucket Challenge and performances from our Choir and Dance Club, it was brilliant event and there were lots of happy faces. The money raised will go towards improvements to the playground area and we are pleased to say that overall £2200 was raised! Thank you to PTA and staff members who gave up their own time to make the event possible, and a special thank you to all of our very generous parents and carers who donated cakes, prizes and came out in force to support our school.

Cantley with Branton Parish Council Litter Pick On Saturday 23rd June, 21volunteers aged between 6 months and beyond put on our hi– vis jackets, grabbed a bag and litter pick and marched through Branton. All down Doncaster Road from Cantley/Branton roundabout, over the motorway bridge and all the way towards the River Torne, Valley Drive, Chapel Lane, Poppyfields, St Vincent’s Court, Whiphill Top Lane, Gatewood Lane and the ‘Fly tipping paradise’ layby. All these areas were targeted by the team. We collected over 20 bags of rubbish, which was all collected by Street Scene later that day. It took us all of 1.5 hours! Thank you to everyone who volunteered their time. We were joined by an ex Branton resident who now lives in Auckley! Thank you June Scott, your help was very much appreciated. Watch this space for the next one, we hope to organise another in October.

Doncaster Rambler’s Black Walk Round Everton Another sunny day and another blue sky ramble for the large turnout of 43 Doncaster Ramblers, many of the men sporting a variety of baseball caps, bucket hats , or fedora headgear, and shades, making them unrecognisable! It was great though to welcome back some old friends and also some new members as we met at the Blacksmith's Arms in Everton. Recorded in the Domesday Book, Eofor-tun was originally a Danish (Viking) settlement, inhabited by farmers. The village boasts as many as 23 grade II listed buildings, and 5 acres of SSSI land planted with trees, shrubs, and bramble! Suitably briefed we set off into the dapped shade of Barrow Hills woodland before heading north onto Everton Carr towards the River Idle, glinting in the distance. Using quiet lanes and tracks we made our way in a clockwise direction, returning to the Blacksmith's for lunch. The landlord had opened especially for our group and I am sure that he appreciated the arrival of 43 thirsty ramblers! It was interesting to hear the views of some of our companions, when asked during the lunch stop “Why have you come today?” One enthusiastically said “I’ve been walking over 25 years, it was a Saturday coach trip twice a month back then. A lot has changed, and since retirement I come every Saturday, and Tuesday. I just love it” Another couple newly joined said “We’ve been walking for years, using guide books, but like the idea of a led walk for its safety, and social aspect” A third offered a more unusual explanation “It fills my brain with endorphins, and makes me happy” and when asked to explain said “My daughter occasionally remarks – Mum you are grumpy, go for a walk!” The shorter afternoon walk took us over the A631 and into Mattersey, stopping for a photoshoot on a bridge over the River Idle. The return leg took us through woods and fields with the church tower at Everton beckoning us home. This was an easy, relaxed walk in local countryside and everyone enjoyed the gentle terrain, the great weather and the congenial company - as ever. Thanks, Nigel and Rob, for taking us on this lovely local walk and for safely shepherding the large number of us over busy roads along the way. It was good to see Dave C. backmarking with us again. DONCASTER CHORAL SOCIETY www.doncasterchoralsociety.org.uk Registered Charity No 505263 presents another season of Concerts of Popular Organ Concerts in the series
Lovely Lurchers and Gorgeous Greyhounds This month, your local RSPCA Animal Centre is focussing on beautiful rescue Lurchers and Greyhounds. They are independent thinkers, intelligent and highly trainable, and they love a puzzle, such as where have you hidden the biscuits. Keeping Lurchers and Greyhounds in tip top condition takes a lot less effort than you would think. Calm and affectionate, they make a super family pet and are intensely loyal. They have a keen instinct for exercise, they are speedy but only use it in short bursts where they use up usually all of their energy in one sprint and then promptly retire to a comfy bed. They are gentle and affectionate but love a good tug o’ war or to chew a toy in between naps. They sleep in really weird positions – usually on their back in a sunny spot on the floor, or your couch, with their head twisted awkwardly and their legs contorted. You get accustomed to it, but at first it can be quite startling; yes they are comfortable. They are also adorable! From their bright glossy eyes, their pricked up ears, and their big goofy noses to their long, swishy waggy tails, Lurchers and Greyhounds are hard not to fall head over heels in love with once you get to know them. Come and see our beautiful boys and girls, they are waiting just for you. The RSPCA Animal Centre on the Great North Road, near Bawtry, DN10 6DE, is open six days a week 11am-4pm (closed Wednesdays). Also visit www.rspcadoncasterrotherham.org.uk for the latest news and more information on how you can help support our animal welfare operations.

AUCKLEY PARISH COUNCIL August 2018 Newsletter
Proposed Recreational Facilities at Hayfield Lane A planning application has now been approved for a recreational area to be developed on the former RAF sports field at Hayfield Lane, Auckley. Facilities will include a playing field for football and other sports, a MUGA (multi-use games activity) and a range of play equipment suitable for all age groups. The area will be landscaped, and a car park provided. Work on the project will commence later this year and will hopefully be completed by early 2019. Auckley Parish Neighbourhood Plan The results of the survey are in, and the Group would like to thank everyone who responded. The first public information session was held at Auckley School recently where the analysis of the results could be seen. The information will also be available at the Auckley Show in August so if you are attending please come along and see our stand. The next meeting of the Group will be held on Monday, 6th August at 6.30 pm in the Auckley Parish Centre. If you wish to be involved in the shaping of our community please come along. Dog Fouling The fouling of pavements and recreation areas continues to be a problem, due to a minority of dog owners who do not clean up after their pets. Currently we are finding bags of dog excreta being dumped on the ground in areas such as the wooded copse off Eastfield Lane and alongside public footpaths. There are a number of litter/dog waste bins in the Parish, and it would therefore be greatly appreciated if owners would use these receptacles to dispose of any waste.

On Saturday 7th July, Cantley with Branton Parish Council held an open day event at Kilham Hall Recreational Ground to celebrate the new play and fitness equipment as well as the perimeter footpath and Sianne’s Butterfly Trail. The Civic Mayor, Councillor Majid Khan opened the event along with Don Valley MP Caroline Flint. They both talked about the work the Parish Council, in partnership with DMBC had put into the project and the sense of community spirit within the Parish. Parish Council Chair, Michelle Sidebottom gave thanks to many people who have been involved in the project and our Ward Councillors, Jane Cox and Allen Jones, who were both involved in securing the 106 monies available from the developers in the early stages were also present. The idea for the Perimeter path came from the Parish Councils public consultation held in January 2017. Sarah White a local resident came up with the idea and thought it would be a good use of space for youngsters learning to ride their bikes as well as many other uses. Sarah sadly lost her 3 year old daughter Sianne in April 15, so after reflection the idea developed to include a Butterfly trail back in February this year to remember Sianne. The photos to the right show the day in April when the plants and shrubs were planted by Sarah, Neil and Sienna White, along with Sarah’s father, close friends and a few members of the Parish Council. DMBC donated a butterfly carving, beautifully hand crafted by Leon Clemitshaw. The carving marks the start of the trail and was unveiled on Saturday by Sianne’s older sister Sienna. Ruby Waddington, a close family friend, bravely read a beautiful poem written by her Mum which was a very emotional moment for everyone. Sarah, Neil, Sienna and their family released 500 butterflies to mark the occasion. The butterfly release was funded by ‘sponsor a butterfly’ which has raised £1,100 to date. Yorkshire Wildlife Park donated £300 through match funding. The money will be used to cover the cost of the release and to further improve the butterflies habitat. Photo above: Don Valley MP Caroline Flint, Sienna White and Civic Mayor, Councillor Majid Khan, along with members of Cantley with Branton Parish Council, Clerk Julia Staniforth and children from the parish.

Planting day Peel Holding also donated £1000 towards the project from it’s community fund and this money has been used towards the cost of a commemorative bench which will be fitted mid to late August. The Butterfly Conservation Trust has donated an information board, designed by Sarah, that will also be fitted in the near future, Auckley Parish Council donated £500 which will be used towards the cost of the stand for the sign. Yorkshire Wildlife Park have also kindly donated a bench which will be positioned around the path to offer relief to those who need a rest.
Sianne Lili, never forgotten.
It is hoped that residents young and old will benefit from the changes to the park and Sianne’s Butterfly trail will continue to be a work in progress supported by the community. Thank you to Kate Chorlton for all the lovely photographs from the day

In the near future a plaque will be placed to explain the garden. Sianne’s Butterfly Trail has been created to remember a little girl that left us too soon to be a bright star in the sky. This garden is for Sianne Lili and for all those that miss someone dear, a place to reflect and find peace within nature.
Above top: Sarah, Neil, Sienna and family release the 500 Red Admiral butterflies up into the sky. Many chose to land on the crowd which was a real treat for many. Above left: Sienna shares a butterfly with a friend. Above right: Sienna, Noah and Amelia admire the wildflowers.

Branton St Wilfrid’s children WOW their local MP Caroline Flint Caroline Flint has admitted to being WOWed by pupils from Branton St Wilfrid’s Church of England Primary School following her visit to the school. The MP has congratulated the pupils for the success of their WOW challenge - Walk Once a Week which encourages pupils to walk to school and encourages parents to park further away from the school at key locations in the village. Ms Flint said: “The WOW challenge has been really taken to heart by pupils. Many of them ask their parents to drop them at the designated parking places in the village, so they can keep their promise to walk to school. “This has clearly reduced the traffic congestion and the parking problems near the school and means children are being more active every day – which is good for their health. There is also an important road safety message built in to the WOW challenge. “This campaign is a win-win. Having talked to the pupils and seen how competitive each class is to walk to school most often, all I can say is ‘WOW! Keep it up!’” The WOW challenge followed discussion between the Parish Council, the PTA and the School as to how to reduce parking problems near the school. With funding from the Tesco @Bags of Help’ scheme, local businesses were approached and volunteered to let parents use their car parks as drop-off and pick-up places, known as “Park and Stride”. An exclusion zone around the school was publicised to encourage parents not to park within the zone. Classes compete with each other to have the most children taking part each week. The Don Valley MP has promised to promote this example to other schools in her constituency. PHOTO: Caroline Flint with pupils who were awarded achievers of the week.

Thorne Camera Club on the Humber ‘Amy Howson’ and ‘Comrade’ are owned by the Humber Keel and Sloop Preservation Society, dedicated to keeping the heritage of these vessels alive. In summer, trips are organised on the Humber, so twelve members of the Camera Club booked on one of the sailings as part of the camera club’s summer outings programme. The huge lightship which used to mark Spurn Point, now in Hull Marina, made it easy to find the sloop ‘Amy Howson’, berthed right next to it, and members arrived early to get some photos before they boarded and made ready for an afternoon on the river. On yet another hot day, the water looked calm and deliciously brown, like molten chocolate. Graham says, ‘Aboard the historic Humber sloop, Amy Howson, one of the members got to steer the boat. The weather was perfect for sailing and for taking photographs. The crew, who are all volunteers, were very friendly and happy to talk about the history of the sloops and keels that plied their trade on the Humber as far as Sheffield. Apparently they were frequent visitors to Thorne in days gone by’. At over a hundred years old, these ancient vessels plied the Humber tributaries carrying goods between ports. Once by sail alone, at the whim of wind and tide, engines helped them become more efficient as they travelled up to Goole and Thorne, York and Newark, or downriver to Immingham and Grimsby. At over 70feet long, and brightly painted, ‘Amy Howson’ is an impressive sight. She carries one huge mast up which the large sail is raised on a gaff. This works alongside a smaller foresail to propel the boat in open water on the tide. After leaving the marina via the lock, members had the opportunity to have a go on the helm, steering the boat towards the Humber Bridge. The landscape west of the bridge is very pretty, and small settlements glide by at a sedate pace, - North and South Ferriby, Winteringham and Brough - , upriver towards Trent Falls. The tide and wind dictate the turning point, as the boat must get back to Hull in time to pass through the lock back to her berth at the end of a thoroughly enjoyable trip.
