Help shape Doncaster’s future Public consultation has begun on an important part of Doncaster’s Local Plan which will help decide what is developed and where in Doncaster over the next 20 years. The council wants to choose the most appropriate sites to contribute to Doncaster’s growth needs. The Local Plan will identify sites where new homes, jobs and services will be located and how they will be provided. The Local Plan will also contain policies to guide development and protect the environment.
Public Consultation To help with this work, we would like your views on some important elements of the plan: 1. New housing and employment sites: 2. A new policy about providing housing linked to jobs around Doncaster Sheffield Airport: 3. Minerals Sites and Areas of Search; and 4. Wind Energy Policy. There may be sites near you that are proposed for allocation for future housing and/or employment. You can all view site proposals and all associated documents by: • •
scanning the QR code above or logging on to our website: www.doncaster.gov.uk/localplan
You can make comments via our website (download our feedback form) or by writing to us at Doncaster Council, Local Plans Team, Civic Office, Waterdale, Doncaster, DN1 3BU by e-mail localplan@doncaster.gov.uk or for specific enquiries you can contact us on (01302) 734419. DONCASTER-BASED SCHOOL WINS IKEA COMPETITION TO BUILD SUSTAINABILITY HUB Auckley School in Doncaster has won a competition run by IKEA, encouraging local children to learn more about sustainable living The school has been awarded £2,000 by the home-furnishings retailer to fund eco-friendly education projects Auckley School in Doncaster has won a competition run by IKEA, which aims to encourage local children to learn more about the benefits of sustainable living. The competition, which has been running for three years, is organised by IKEA’s sustainability team at the Doncaster-based distribution centre. It offered school children across Doncaster the opportunity to pitch their eco-friendly projects or ideas to a panel of IKEA co-workers. Auckley School was selected as a winner and granted £2,000 by IKEA, as well as the tools and resources needed to start their projects. Ian McClusky, Sustainability Manager at IKEA Distribution services, said: “At IKEA, we are guided by our vision to create a better everyday life for the many people. That includes our customers and co-workers, as well as the local communities where we operate. “With this initiative, we’re thrilled to be able to promote a more sustainable life at home for the next generation and provide additional resources to a fantastic local school.” Katharine de Hoest, HR Administrator at IKEA Distribution Services, visited Auckley School last week to see the eco-friendly projects in action. She comments: “It’s been a pleasure for IKEA to support Auckley School to kick-start its sustainability journey. I’ve been so impressed with the children’s creativity and passion for learning about sustainable living, and can’t wait to see the final results.” Winning ideas by the children included a bug hotel and a rainwater collection system to increase biodiversity and help save resources, as well as a tile mosaic of the school logo, outdoor seating areas, and home-grown herb and vegetable gardens to encourage the children to spend more time outdoors. Kevin Flint, Executive Head teacher at Auckley School, comments: “We can’t thank IKEA enough for their generosity and support in developing a self-sustaining, eco-friendly project at our school. “The children have really enjoyed getting thoroughly involved in this project from the planning stage through to final completion. What’s more, we now have an area that was previously unused land, which has been transformed into a wonderful space where children can learn in an outdoor setting.”
Regular maintenance * Annual lawn treatment plan * One off lawn treatments or General garden work
Launched as part of IKEA’s global sustainability strategy, People and Planet Positive, the local initiative aims to increase awareness of sustainable living, how to save on utility costs, increase biodiversity and incorporate environmental topics into the school curriculum. Children from the school will be presenting the progress of their projects and what they’ve achieved to IKEA co-workers in July.

Every cat counts The RSPCA South Yorkshire Animal Centre never gives up on cats it rescues from cruelty and neglect. Currently the team has two long stay cats that are still looking for forever homes after eight months of patiently waiting for new loving owners. Four-year-old black and white Lacy will need medicine in his food costing about £1 a day, while three-year-old JJ has to be an indoor cat because he is a cat flu carrier, although he is fine and healthy himself. “It is always more difficult to re-home cats if they have special requirements,’ said Animal Centre Manager Laura Bullock. “Both these cats are very friendly and love a cuddle, so I am sure there are happy homes out there somewhere.” If you cannot provide a home for Lacy or JJ, then perhaps you can help support their stay at the Centre by donating unwanted clothes for our charity shops? The RSPCA shops at High Street, Rotherham; Queen Mary’s Road, Rossington; and Field Road, Thorne, make a huge contribution to the Animal Centre’s running costs. You can also drop off donations at the Animal Centre – Great North Road, near Bawtry DN10 6DE, open six days a week 11am to 4pm (closed Wednesdays).

Scammers’ tricks of the trade to be exposed by
Citizens Advice
North East Doncaster Citizens Advice North East Doncaster and Trading Standards are joining forces to give people in Doncaster the knowledge to spot scams. The two organisations will be running a scam awareness campaign throughout July as part of Scams Awareness Month, a national campaign encouraging people to report and talk about scams. Scammers can strike at any time, from cold-calling people with a fake investment opportunity to posting online adverts for products which don’t exist. The awareness campaign aims to get more people reporting scams so the authorities can chase down fraudsters. Reporting being scammed also means that people can receive advice on how to try and get their money back or any other steps they should take to protect themselves. Scam awareness will take place throughout the whole of July. Karen Bothamley, Chief Executive Officer of Citizens Advice North East Doncaster said: “Knowing how to spot a scam is the best line of defence against being scammed. “While scammers will always use tactics like cutprice deals and pressure selling to draw people in, there are more ways for scammers to reach people with different bogus offers - from texts and emails to social media and online adverts. Postcards and posters will be available in all our offices so people will be able to take away a few key tips which will help protect them against a range of different scams. “People are also often reluctant to talk about scams so we want this event to bring the issue out into the open and look forward to hearing from as many people as possible.”

The exception to this are classes 38 and 43 to 50 inclusive and class 102. If, in the opinion of the judges, none of the exhibits in a particular class merit a prize, the committee reserves the right to withhold any prize in that class. The decision of the judges is final and binding. Any protest regarding interpretation of these rules, or any other matter, must be made to the show secretary on the day of the show. No exhibits to be removed before 3.45pm. Exhibits not claimed by 4.00pm will be presumed donated and will be sold. An auction will take place at 4.00pm. The proceeds will be used to cover the cost of the show. The committee will not be liable for damage or loss to persons or property. Exhibits must not have been shown in the previous year. In other respects, the show will be conducted in accordance with the rules and standards of the Royal Horticulture Society, as laid down in their handbook.
PRIZES IN ALL CLASSES
Adult: 1st Rosette 2nd Rosette 3rd Rosette Children: 1st £2.50 & Rosette 2nd £1.50 & Rosette 3rd £1.00 & Rosette
A Few Tips for Exhibitors
1. Please make sure you read the schedule and count your exhibits, an extra potato or carrot will not be judged and marked N.T.S. (not to schedule) 2. Vegetables should generally be as large as possible, exceptions being potatoes and beetroot where judges like to see good clean medium sized exhibits, look for the requisite number of even sized exhibits – 4 good medium carrots will usually beat 3 big ones plus a little one. 3. Judges tend to favour cucumber or courgettes with the flower or its remains intact. 4. For the adult class, paintings etc should be nicely framed and clean. Not so important in the children’s class. 5. Baking should be well cooked but not overdone, again make sure you enter the correct quantity. Check that the pastry of custards and flans is fully cooked. 6. Jam, pickles etc should be in clean clear glass containers. 7. Arts and crafts exhibits should be clean and free of creases. 8. To enable judging to be done fairly, please do not put your name on the front of the exhibits. 9. Flowers should be as fresh as possible; dropped petals may loose you points. 10. Wines – although any bottle will be accepted, to really impress the judge use 26 fluid oz clear punted bottles fitted with a flanged cork stopper. Screw tops will be accepted. 11 Beer Lager, any bottle will be accepted but to impress the judge, the use of 1 pint plain brown bottles, sealed with a crown top is ideal. 12. Please do not be afraid to have a go, challenge your neighbour to have a go, a little friendly competition can be good fun. If you are beaten, resolve to win next year. Please Note every effort will be made to look after your exhibits, but accidents do happen. So please do not enter any item of extreme monetary or sentimental value that could be possibly damaged.

Success at Thorne Camera Club After only four years in existence, Thorne Camera Club has gone from strength to strength. At the outset, a group of dedicated individuals worked hard to establish the group, gaining a Big Lottery Fund Award to set it up with the necessary equipment. With a membership of around 40 regular attenders, with levels of ability from absolute beginner to those with photographic distinctions, this friendly group continues to be successful in their ventures, welcoming members from all areas. The new Photography Course for Beginners and Improvers, which began in May, is such a great success that a second course was suggested, and is due to start on 29th July. The course concentrates on the basics of photography and camera function, which relates mostly to digital cameras, understanding the use of all the buttons, dials and settings. Member Ron emailed, ‘Glynn ( the tutor ) did an absolutely great job. Started with the basics and put it over perfectly with great analogies. Wished it went on longer, looking forward to the next session. If he does a second course, I will definitely sign up again.. Well worth it.’ If you think this course would help you with your camera, you have a second chance to attend. Just contact the Club on 07463821182 or email thornecameraclub@yahoo.co.uk and put your name on the list. This is important as places are limited. The cost is just £25 for 5 lessons 10am the 12 on Saturday mornings at the Methodist Church Hall, starting soon. Summer is now almost upon us, however, looking back over the last few months of activity, there is much to report. Another success at Thorne Camera Club was Sheffield Photographic Society Annual Knockout Challenge earlier this year, where the Club achieved 14 th place of 29. Considering that the club has run for only 4 years, TCC beat some well established clubs, some which have been in existence for over 100 years. The Competition Secretary was incredibly proud of the result which was a distinct improvement over last year’s placing. One of the other main events was a club competition - the theme, animal portraits, plus an open section. The competition resulted in a large number of entrants, winners included: in the Animal Portrait Section: “Bad Hair Day” – by Jean Goodburne “My Teddy Bear” – by Mel Brown “You Looking at Me” – by Mel brown and in the Open Section: “Street Scene” – by David Ulyett “ The Bus Queue” – by Lynda Ulyett Thorne Camera Club has embarked on its summer outing season now, which will take it through until September 18th when the Autumn programme commences. Outings so far have been to Selby for the Civic Society photo quiz , Wollaton Hall and Deer Park, and Tropical World near Leeds. Wollaton also staged a Classic Car Show, so what with the deer, the classic cars, the park and the hall, there was an abundance of photo opportunities for all. Other events planned for the summer include a Canal Trip to Doncaster, a visit to Walker’s Nurseries Ornamental Garden at Blaxton, and TATA Steel at Scunthorpe. More outings will follow in August and September. If you are interested in joining the Club, please contact the Chairman, David, details above. The Photograph above is called ‘Street Scene’ and Chosen by myself, Arrow Editor, Michelle Sidebottom as it reminds me of a Lowry painting.

St Wilfrid’s School News Reception This term our topic is, ‘What happens when I fall asleep?’ and on Thursday 29th June we were lucky enough to have the Wonderdome Planetarium visit us and have two sessions inside. Our first session told us all about the different planets. Did you know that Pluto used to be a planet but is now classed as a dwarf planet? We also found out that the Sun is a star and that some of the planets have moons that can be as big as Earth! We really liked the song that the planets sang to us. We looked at the relative size of the planets and realised that Earth really is quite small in the big scheme of things. In our second session, we looked further into the stars and into the different constellations and discovered that many of them are described as creatures such as The Bear. We were told a story about how some of the constellations came to be through Perseus and Medusa’s feud. Back in class we made some of the constellations that we had seen.
Year 1 Year 1’s topic for Summer 2 is ‘Paws, Claws and Whiskers’ and we are thinking about all things animal; where they sleep, what they eat and how to look after them. We launched our topic with a trip to Yorkshire Wildlife Park, where the children behaved beautifully, were able to observe all the different animals in their enclosures and took part in an interactive workshop. We are now designing and creating our own St Wilfrid’s zoo including animal enclosures, model animals and specialist talks by our very own ‘zoo keepers’. Year 2 Year 2 launched their topic ‘The Scented Garden’ with a trip to Walker’s Nurseries. The children had a fantastic day talking to gardening experts, taking part in a flower hunt and seeing what they could find on the beautiful nature trails. The children loved discovering new and unusual plants that they had never seen before and smelling all of their wonderful scents. In school the children are having lots of fun growing their own flowers and creating wonderful pieces of art work based upon famous paintings of flowers.

Year 3 At the beginning of term, Year 3 enjoyed a day at Austerfield Study Centre as part of their topic, ‘Flow’. During the morning the children discovered lots of interesting facts about rivers and then created their own river to help identify its features along the journey to the sea. In groups, they had fun investigating the flow of water while completing a challenge. The afternoon was filled with team building tasks as they worked alongside each other superbly to build dens in the forest. They had to support their team to create a den which offered shelter from the wind and rain – both teams created amazing dens which the children were incredibly proud of!

Year 4 This half term has seen the continuation of Year 4’s topic ‘Road Trip USA’. We have taken a step back in time to explore the Native American Culture which, among many things, has including making our own Totem Poles. We have also learnt how to write an email to enquire about booking a hotel if we should ever be lucky enough to go on our own Road Trip! The Class have also written a newspaper report on Christopher Columbus about the voyages and explorations he had. We are now all eagerly awaiting word from Miss Liddle who is currently living her own USA Road Trip and has promised she will call them when she reaches the top of the Empire State Building! Year 5 The pupils in Class 5 were lucky enough to have a residential visit to Boggle Hole near Whitby in May and absolutely loved the experience. We fitted so much into the few days that we were away, starting with a mini beast hunt in Dalby Forest, where we found an incredible number of snails! We had a full day out in Whitby where we visited the RNLI, explored Whitby Abbey and even went on a spooky Ghost Walk! Exploring Robin Hood’s Bay and enjoying ice creams were also high on the agenda. One of the best experiences we had all week was rock pooling on the beach and we had some fearless pupils picking up crabs! After a busy few days we ended our experience with a fire pit and listened to stories...and no camp fire would be complete without hot chocolate and toasted marshmallows! A fantastic time was had by all! Year 6 On Friday 9th June a fundraiser was held by Year 6 for the British Heart Foundation. This event was held in their classroom and was a success, raising over £200. These thoughtful actions will help to save many lives. Many of the activities were both enjoyable and eye-catching; Penalty Shoot-Out (a favourite), Pin the Heart of the Body, Name the Teddy, Guess How Many Tomatoes in the Jar, a sponsored run and a bake sale (which easily collected the most money!) Winners of ‘Name the Teddy’ and ‘Tomato Jar’ activities were named in assembly that same day. From the organisation to raising £200, the Year 6 fundraiser was truly a day to remember. AUCKLEY PARISH COUNCIL NEWSLETTER JULY/AUGUST 2017 Proposed Access from Hurst Lane, Yorkshire Wildlife Park Extension Proposals The Parish Council is extremely concerned that there are proposals to open a new access between Hanson's Quarry and the railway bridge on Hurst Lane in Auckley. This would create serious traffic issues for a village road and, in the interests of safety, should not go ahead. There are severe traffic problems at both the junction of Hurst Lane with the A638 (Bawtry Road) and the B1396 (Lidgett/ Mosham Road). These junctions have been subject to numerous traffic incidents involving both vehicles and pedestrians. Thus a further increase in traffic would exacerbate the situation, leading to even worsening traffic congestion. We have written to DMBC (Planning and Highways), the schools, proposed 6th Form College, the South Yorkshire Road Safety Partnership and Caroline Flint, M.P. We urge all residents who have concerns to contact the Yorkshire Wildlife Park's main office and Doncaster Council's Planning and Highways Departments as follows: Yorkshire Wildlife Park, Lexington North, The Zenith Building, 26 Spring Gardens, Manchester M1 1AB Doncaster Council's Planning & Highways Departments, Civic Office, Waterdale, Doncaster. DN1 3BU The more parishioners who write the more likely it is that notice will be taken of valid concerns. These cover:
• • •
Many HGV's utilise Hurst Lane, including vehicles from the Hanson Quarry
• • • •
Another 1,000 pupils will attend the new 6th Form College which will open in September this year.
•
New properties are still being built around the Hayfield area of the Parish (where there is already a large residential area, formerly RAF Finningley), and also many businesses have been established, again adding to existing congestion.
• • •
Some traffic will always use Auckley roads to/from the Robin Hood Airport.
•
Vehicular access to the proposed entrance along Hurst Lane from the South West is obstructed by a bridge over the Doncaster-Lincoln railway line. This bridge seriously reduces line of sight along Hurst Lane which would present a danger of collision into slow moving/stationary vehicles waiting to enter the Wildlife site.
•
The road bridge on Hurst Lane has a restricted footpath on the East side which is as little as 60cm width in parts. Pedestrians from Hayfield School and the proposed 6th Form College are compelled to cross Hurst Lane to make use of the footpath when walking to residential properties in all areas of Auckley and also neighbouring villages, e.g. Blaxton.
The entrance to the well-attended Scouts' Hut is near the new access. Around 1,000 pupils attend The Hayfield School and some walk home to areas of Auckley and also nearby villages Traffic from the School is already an issue and will be exacerbated when the College opens its doors There will be opportunities to use the facility at weekends and weekday evenings. Speeding is an issue, despite the fact that a 30mph limit is now in place on part of Hurst Lane and in the past we have requested the services of the Police with the speed camera to monitor the situation.
Hayfield Lakes and restaurant are also sited along nearby Hayfield Lane. A more appropriate longer term solution would be for a vehicular access to be created from the new FARRRS Road!
Not all users will utilise Hurst Lane from the Great North Road to access the new area and some, depending on where they live, are likely to come into Auckley from Main Street and also from Mosham Road. Although an Outline Application will have already been submitted to DMBC, any decision will be taken when the Full Application is determined by the Planning Committee. The second stage may not be until around 3 months. WE URGE ALL RESIDENTS TO PLEASE HELP US WITH THIS IMPORTANT ISSUE, FOR THE SAFETY OF ALL!!

Could you give 2 hours a month to support an older person to get more out of life? Dennis is 91 and lives alone in Doncaster; his passion in life is all things football. A lot of people we support through Age UK Doncaster are safe, warm and have everything practical they need, but they are often lonely and not doing the things that matter the most to them in life. Since launching in January 2017, Circles is putting a stop to this. Circles put people at the centre of everything we do; we are about all the things that make life that little bit richer. Each Circle has a clear purpose. The purpose of Dennis’s Circle is to keep him involved in football. ‘I love football, I could talk all day about it but it’s not the same when you don’t see many people, especially those with the same interests’. Dennis was matched with our volunteer Alex. They have since attended a charity football match together and have been reminiscing over old team photos. Other people’s Circles involve staying active, cooking or crafts, re-connecting with a faith community or starting dancing again. Circles are seeing great outcomes in Doncaster and we could not do our work without our fantastic community of volunteers here at Age UK. By dedicating just 2 hours a month you can help more people make the most of later life. Find out more by calling our Circles team on 01302 812345.
