Welcome to the April issue of The Branton & Auckley Arrow. We are all excited here at Arrow! To celebrate our 14th Birthday this year—we have launched a brand new website. It is now easier than ever to read your latest Arrow online, as well as the month before and so on! Please send us your feed back, you may win our competition (see page 2). Just log on to www.arrowpublications.co.uk and send us your feedback through our submission form. All entries will go into a draw for a beautiful bouquet from Charlotte’s on Hatfield or a scrumptious Tea for Two at Walkers in Blaxton. Good luck. We also have news of a very special local Gentleman, who was honoured this year, Tony Muddiman MBE! Read all about his special day and a snapshot of his huge achievements provided by his daughter on p3. Congratulations Tony! In this month’s Arrow, we have 4 pages dedicated to our Auckley Show. Neil Woodward, Chairman of the Show committee has provided a really interesting insight into the background history of the show. I think most of you will find this interesting and enjoy looking at the old photos from 1986. The deadline for the May issue is Wednesday 17th April. The May issue will be distributed the last weekend in April.

Best Wishes

Community News Alan Muddiman MBE

It was a cold but bright day on the 20th December, 2018, when Auckley resident Alan Muddiman was presented with the award of MBE by HRH Prince Charles at Buckingham Palace. Three generations of the women in his life proudly attended alongside him. The youngest, his granddaughter Mathilda (a pupil at Hayfield Lane primary), barely able to contain her excitement in the Christmas-bedecked plush palace and for once clean and well-groomed. Alan received his award for services to Health & Safety in the Civil Engineering sector having first started his career in Construction Safety in the 1970’s. Alan has now retired to pursue woodcrafts and fishing with his brother Michael, but whilst working he contributed greatly to improve Health & Safety standards in the construction industry, influencing industry and legislation not least with his MA qualification thesis “Grasping the Nettle”. Alan would be the first to say that the Auckley community has supported him over the years and I know he’d like to give a special mention to the Square dealers; Ren Perry, Neil Woodward and Eddie Tweedy; his domino partners for too many Monday nights to mention! Needless to say, his whole family are so very proud of him and look forward to spending more time with him now that he has retired! Kirsty-Jo

Community News South Cantley Badminton Club Thinking of starting to play badminton, or maybe taking it up again then you are welcome to come to Hayfield School and join our welcoming club. The club is definitely mixed ability, so there is no danger of you fitting in. We meet at 8:30 on a Monday night during term time and the courts are booked for an hour. Subs are reasonable, currently £25 for 10 weeks. The school have just had the gym upgraded and ask that you change to the indoor shoes before playing so as not to damage the floor, otherwise no rules If you need more information or borrow a racket then please contact John Scutt, email address johnscutt527@gmail.com Look forward to seeing you.

Walker’s Reading Group If you like reading, and enjoy good company, then Walkers Nurseries Book Club might just be for you. We meet on the first Saturday of each month at 11.00 am in the Potting Shed at Walkers Nurseries at Blaxton. Our books are supplied by the Doncaster library service, and can be collected from the Cantley branch library each month. Alternatively, some members pick up a cheap copy online. What we read each year is selected by book club members in democratic fashion! Our book club celebrates its 8th Birthday this year – the yearly anniversary always involves food - either a celebratory breakfast or lunch at a summer book club meeting. Same thing happens at Christmas. Our Christmas book club meeting last year involved a delicious Christmas breakfast, festive sock swap, and fun Christmas quiz. Oh – and we reviewed the book! So as you might have gathered, we are a very sociable group. But members opt in or out of celebratory fare according to preference. The great thing about our book club is its flexibility. Don’t think you need to attend every meeting – life sometimes gets in the way! Members who can’t make a monthly meeting but who like to read the book anyway often send their reviews by e mail – but there is no pressure to do so. We have a core of regular attendees, but we also have highly valued members that might only be able to attend from time to time. It’s great when they do. If you want more information about the group there is a Facebook page, Walkers Book Club, which gives details of the next meeting, the book to be discussed, and reviews of the books we have been reading. Discussion is lively and it is unusual to find complete agreement on the merits or otherwise of a book, although so far no one has resorted to fisticuffs. New members are very welcome. Don’t be shy - if you think that you might be interested, just turn up on the first Saturday of the month and look for the group in the Potting Shed with the books on the table. Hope to see you soon.

Doncaster Rambler’s "To Be A Pilgrim"

Tuesday 19th March - It was a short journey down the Great North Road to our starting point at Daneshill Lakes, near Torworth. After a briefing from our leaders Chris and Sue, 41 of us set off through the woods and lakes and initially alongside the busy E.Coast rail line. After heading north for a mile or so we turned west, passing through the village of Ranskill to our coffee stop at Roman Bank Earthwork on the edge of Serlby Golf Club. From here we continued north towards our lunchtime stop at The Pilgrim Fathers in Scrooby. How nice to be welcomed with broad smiles, willing staff and the use of the beer garden for our picnics. Given our numbers, the service was also very efficient. Our afternoon journey took us in an easterly direction to Mattersey Grange before heading south along tracks and through woodland back to Daneshill Lakes. Everyone enjoyed this very pleasant spring walk helped by the much improved weather conditions with few coats being worn for a change. Today's highlight - bog-hopping across a field after lunch! Thanks, Sue and Chris, for planning and leading this most enjoyable day out and to Keith, our ever-reliable backmarker. Ranskill The village dates back to the Danish invasions of the 9th century where the name 'Ravenskelf' meant 'shelving knoll/ridge of the raven. The village features St. Barnabas Church, built in 1878 and a Methodist chapel first built in 1868 and expanded in the 1930s. The Methodist chapel also features a schoolroom, where today the local newspaper, the STAR (Scrooby, Torworth and Ranskill) is printed. Ranskill also has a reading room, built in 1891 by the Gillott family as a library and reading room, where in 1909 the room was changed to include billiard tables. Scrooby Until 1766, it was on the Great North Road so became a stopping-off point for numerous important figures including Queen Elizabeth I and Cardinal Wolsey on their journeys. The latter stayed at the Manor House briefly, after his fall from favour. An earlier resident William Brewster became dissatisfied with the Anglican Church and attempted to leave for the Netherlands in 1607. After an unsuccessful first attempt, Brewster succeeded in 1608. He eventually went to New England in 1620 on the Mayflower, as one of the people later called Pilgrim Fathers. By Dave Binnington and Peter Rowsell

The new ‘Local’ in Branton

The Local Badger Hello! Paul and I (Laura) are the new owners of the Local Badger in Branton, and would like to take this opportunity to say hello and introduce ourselves to the residents of Branton and Auckley. Lots of you may already be regular customers at the Badger – we have certainly met lots of people who have given us a really warm welcome in our new ‘home’ and we’ve enjoyed meeting lots of locals who we’re now on first name terms with. Whilst you will not notice any radical changes in the bar – one thing that’s changing ever so slightly is the name! Our surname ‘Local’ just happens to fit in exactly with what we want to be in Branton – a local bar where residents and visitors will feel welcomed and at home, so the Badger has become The Local Badger! Paul and I started a mobile Mexican food trailer business just over a year ago, which we absolutely loved. As the business took off, we naturally started to consider its future and where we could go with it. We came to the Badger and took part in a couple of kitchen takeover events. We loved the place and the people, so when the opportunity came about for us to purchase the business, we grabbed it! We still have a ‘leaning towards’ Mexican food and incorporate some of our most popular dishes in the menu, though we love cooking lots of different cuisines, so we have a varied menu and always offer a weekly special. EVERYTHING we cook is made by us, from scratch, so we know exactly what’s in your food (no nasties!) and this means we can usually accommodate dietary needs by varying recipes too. Our food is very much ‘casual dining’ and customers enjoy relaxed eating while they sample craft beers or gins. We’re now open from 12pm every Wednesday to Sunday and food is served from 12 until late. Paul has always been a bit of a beer ‘buff’ so he loves running the craft ales side of the business. We have eight taps, four of which constantly rotate and we have a great selection of canned and bottled beers too – so there’s always something new to try. We like to collaborate with craft brewers too, so we’ll often have tap takeovers, or special evenings where you can learn more about your beer.

20

Laura and Paul, new owners of The Local Badger. Pop in and say hello! I’m more of a gin girl, so I love buying in interesting gins for you to try – we currently have almost 50 on our shelves so we can usually recommend something you’ll enjoy. Again, we plan on hosting some gin tasting evenings too, so you can learn about pairing gin & tonics amongst other things gin! We love live music too, so we’ll continue to have free live music events at least once each month, supporting local artists whenever we can. We also host an open mic evening every alternate Sunday, where anyone is welcome to come along, sing, play music or even recite poetry. This is proving a really popular evening and who knows, we might discover the next big local talent! Kitchen takeovers (where we first served at the Badger) will continue to happen, and we’re always happy to hear from local food businesses who might be interested in ‘popping up’ in our kitchen and taking over from our food for the day. What will most definitely continue, is a warm welcome in the bar. We love meeting new customers, we love what we’re doing – and we are always happy to see you. If you haven’t yet been in to meet us, we look forward to seeing you – please come in and say hello! Laura and Paul x

Auckley Show

a short potted history for those new to the area. The current ‘Auckley Show’ has developed over a long time. From my research it probably started in some form as an annual sports day. We have a poster from 1937 as a reference to this. Auckley was then spelt Awkley and the event was held in a field kindly lent by Mr Ezera Toothill Esquire on Whit Monday of that year. The Great Grandson of Ezera, Jonothon Toothill, a local farmer, helps out and supports the current show. I personally became involved in the early 1980s when I became an Allotment Holder and soon progressed to being the Secretary of the Auckley and Branton Garden and Allotment Association. Prior to my involvement I understand there was an Auckley Gala Committee which had held an annual gala in the grounds of the local Auckley primary school. This committee for some reason had dissolved. A decision was taken to launch an annual show, the now named ‘Auckley Show’ was born and run by the Auckley and Branton Garden and Allotments Association. The intention of this initially was to create an opportunity for members of the association to compete in Horticultural, Baking and Preserves and Craft competitions. The very first event of this kind was held at the side of the river Torne in the grounds of the now demolished night club ‘The Side Saddle’, which was re named ’10 Main Street’ and finally ’Rigsby’s’ before its demolition to make way for the Riverside Gardens housing development. By this time ‘Rigsbys’ was in financial difficulty and I recall the draymen arriving to deliver the beer for our night event. I think it was a group called ‘Chatoosh’ that was headlining our dance with a sell-out of tickets. The beer wouldn’t be delivered until a cash payment was made. Off I went to the bank to pay for the beer delivery. Then there was me, Derek Farrow and Alan Muddiman trying to put up the RAF tent in thunder and lightning. In those early years we borrowed a large tent from

the then R.A.F. Finningley Base for the exhibits. There was a strong relationship between the RAF and the show. The support continues today with the Air Cadets who take command of logistics to get everyone in and out of the showground safely. The traditional children’s sports took place at the side of the river and the grass needed cutting, something had to change! In 1984 the show was last held at this location and the decision taken to hold the ‘Auckley Show’ on the current site, Riverside Park off Ravenswood Drive Auckley. At that time it was felt this was a huge risk moving from the main road of Auckley. A few years ago the current Clerk to the Parish Council Mrs Marjorie Caygill discovered a letter of thanks I had sent to the Auckley Parish Council dated 31st August 1985. The letter was written on one of those typewriter machines, how things have moved on. Within the letter I mention Mr Eric Newbound winning the best kept allotment, 218 people attending the dance at night and an estimate of three times that many attending during the day. The dance at night produced rather a lot of noise and I asked that the residents surrounding the venue be thanked for their patience and tolerance in the next Parish Newsletter. The night event was popular and a variety of local famous talent entertained over the years. Colin Fingers Henry, Steve Womak, Barry Cheese and Bobby Knutt to name a few. In those days you got a piece of steak with some salad and chips on a paper plate provided by Michael Poyner Catering. At times the plastic knife and fork proved challenging for the steak. Some years later, I can’t recall when, I suffered ‘burn out’ and left the committee. Clive Hepworth took over the reins and worked tirelessly to keep the Show going. I believe for a whole host of reasons, and like me perhaps, ‘burn out, interest in the ‘Auckley Show’ dwindled and in 2007 the show was scaled down and moved to the Auckley Parish Centre. I can recall being very disappointed in that the village was about to lose such a fantastic annual event and I was persuaded to form a new committee for 2008.

And so, today, the Show is a day for all the family with a variety of entertainment, a Dog Show, stalls, food, a bar, children’s disco and an adult evening event. Go to our website to see all we have to offer. This will be my 12th show as Chairman. The ‘Auckley Show’ has gone from strength to strength. I personally measure its success by the interest in the Horticultural, Baking, Preserves and Craft exhibits entered by the community in classes for all ages. In 2018 it reached 785 entries and our target for 2019 is to get more than 1000 entries. I get asked quite a lot “Why are we so successful”? 1. I believe it is the significant contribution of our committee of a few dedicated members who give up their valuable time on a voluntary basis. 2. The volunteer supporters that help out on the day, immediately before and after the event. 3. The strong sense of community spirit that I would describe as special to Auckley and the surrounding villages of Branton, Blaxton, Old Cantley, and Finningley. 4. The financial contributions from local businesses either as donations or sponsorship. 5. Support from the Parish Council.

chairman@auckleyshow.co.uk www.auckleyshow.co.uk

I also get asked “Why do you do it”? We seek to bring friends, families and local businesses together. We do raise money before and during the show, all proceeds go towards paying for the next year’s show which we try to constantly improve. We try to encourage younger members of our community to become involved and have been successful in engaging them in the various competitions. 2019 will see an increase in size of the dedicated horticultural, baking, preserves and craft marquee to cater for the demand for more space to display the entries. We, the committee, believe that it is well worth the effort. Bringing people together in this way creates a more caring and inclusive community and ultimately making this a nice area to live and, as I say to our local businesses who support us, “a nice place to do business”. The ‘Auckley Show’ also creates opportunities for local, and national charities, to raise funds for all their worthy causes. As Chairman I find it difficult to meet the rising costs of the Show and rely more and more on generous donations and sponsorship. We always strive to maintain our long standing policy of providing a ‘Free Entry and Free Parking’ event. If you have not yet visited the show make sure you do this year. The ‘Auckley Show’ more than ever needs financial support to meet the rising the costs. If you would like to support the ‘Auckley Show’ as a business or a member of our community please get in touch.
