News, News, News, News, News, News... Said Caroline: “It was great to have Katie shadow me for the day. I hope it gave her a brief insight into the world of Westminster and politics generally.” Said Katie: “It really was a once in a lifetime opportunity to be invited by Caroline to come to Westminster, to sit in meetings with her and to see inside of Ten Downing Street. The day was both memorable and inspiring. I’d met Caroline before, when she has visited Rossington Brownies, so I was aware that what goes on in Westminster is only half of what an MP has to do. “I think it is fantastic that MPs are trying to encourage more young women to consider a role in politics.

A Hayfield Sixth former and Girl Guide leader, Katie Wormald, has just enjoyed a visit to Westminster. The visit was part of the “Inspiring Women” theme in support of International Women’s Day.

“It was also eye-opening to realise that, apart from women MPs like Caroline, there are thousands of staff who work in Parliament, as well as a huge research department at the House of Commons Library and tens of thousands of civil servants in Whitehall. For any young woman interested in politics, there are many career paths on offer.”

Art & Craft Fair

Finningley Art and Social Club will be hosting an art exhibition and craft fair on 5th July 2014 in the Village Hall. The event Don Valley MP, Caroline Flint, invited Katie is free to both exhibitors and visitors and is to Shadow her on 6 March, after MPs were aimed at promoting local groups and asked to “Inspire a young woman from hobbyists. your constituency”. We expect to be displaying sewing and As part of Katie’s visit, she was given a tour knitting items, jewellery, wood turning, of Ten Downing Street and was invited to a hand made cards etc. as well as exhibiting reception with Speaker John Bercow in the paintings by our club members. Speaker’s Apartments. Doors open from 10.00am to 3.00pm. Refreshments will be available.

Branton St Wilfrid’s School News

Class 6’s Trip to Crucial Crew

On Wednesday 12th March, Class 6 went to Crucial Crew! At Crucial Crew, they were placed in different real-life situations. For example, we acted out what we would do in case of a fire. There were lots of different buildings at Crucial Crew, including a Magistrate’s Court, where we acted out a trial for a young offender; a pub, a pelican crossing and an internet café, where we learnt about esafety. Crucial Crew was a really enjoyable day, and we had lots of fun acting out the different scenarios there. However, we also learnt a lot. For example, we learnt that the age of criminal responsibility is ten, so we are all responsible for our actions! Although there were lots of funny moments in the day, there was also a serious message – that we are responsible for our actions, and we need to take care in the future to make sure we make the right decisions!

Class 5 trip to Gainsborough Old Hall

On 17th February as part of their history topic about Henry VIII and Tudor Life, Class 5 spent the day at Gainsborough Old Hall. They had a tour of the hall, where they learnt about who had lived and visited there. They tried out some of the jobs which would have been done, such as sweeping the kitchen floor and preparing food. They all got dressed up for a mock banquet, where they took on roles such as court jester and lords and ladies. Class 5 had an entertaining, hands on experience.

On Wednesday 5th March Class 5 joined the other Year 5 classes from the pyramid, at a Technology Challenge Day held at Hayfield’s School. Class 5 tried out a range of new skills and equipment. They took part in a variety of workshops, which included: Muffin decorating Mini torch making Pop up cards Box/bag making and decorating Air powered car Key ring making A thoroughly enjoyable and educational day was had by all!

Class 1

This half term, in Class 1, our topic is ‘Home Sweet Home’. We have been looking at different types of homes around the world and the types of homes we live in. We have just started to build our own model homes and rooms, using shoe-boxes and different materials to make it look like a house. It’s very exciting! We have to look at the materials in homes and why they are used and we have also been looking at the 2D and 3D shapes that we notice around the home. Soon, we will be looking at homes from the past too and how they are different to our homes now. Here are some photos of us making the outsides of our model homes with rectangle and square bricks-we hope you like them!

Jubilate News For the last twelve months Jubilate, our school Worship Group, has been supporting the Harry Matthews Bowel Transplant Trust. We held a concert in school, sang at the Christmas Carol Service in the village hall and held another concert at Doncaster Minster. These events have enabled Jubilate to send cheques totalling £1241.89 to this wonderful charity. Well done to everyone who gave their time and their talent to raise this amazing amount of money. Our next concerts are 23rd May at St Wilfrid’s Church and 13th June at Cantley Methodist Church and you are more than welcome to join us in school on 7th, 8th and 9th April at 2pm as we perform the Easter Story.

CHARITY APPEALS FOR ‘HOSTS WITH THE MOST’ TO HELP TRANSFORM THE LIVES OF LONELY ELDERLY PEOPLE IN DONCASTER

Contact the Elderly, the charity solely dedicated to tackling loneliness and isolation among older people, is appealing for volunteers in Doncaster willing to welcome a small group into their home for a tea party, just one or two afternoons a year.

The charity aims to relieve the acute loneliness of isolated older people, aged 75 and above, who live alone, by organising free monthly Sunday afternoon tea parties for small groups within local communities. Each older guest is taken to the volunteer host’s home by a volunteer driver, where they join a small group for tea, chat and companionship for a couple of hours. The monthly gatherings exist as a vital lifeline of friendship for the charity’s older guests, however, the regular outings for the popular group in Doncaster are currently under threat due to a lack of volunteers able to host the tea parties. Contact the Elderly’s North and Midlands Executive Officer, Mary Robinson, said: “The charity is committed to offering a lifeline of friendship to the oldest and loneliest people, but this lifeline in Doncaster is currently under threat due to a real shortage of volunteer hosts in the area. Being a host requires a commitment of just a couple of hours, once or twice a year, and anyone who has a downstairs toilet, easy access to their home and a decent sized teapot is eligible! Our volunteers genuinely get as much out of the experience as our older guests, so I’m calling for anyone who is interested in giving something back to their community to please get in touch with me as soon as possible.” Doncaster residents interested in becoming a volunteer host for Contact the Elderly once or twice a year can contact Mary Robinson, North and Midlands Executive Officer on 01535 632 592 or email mary.robinson@contact-the-elderly.org.uk

St Oswald’s Primary School News

Students at St Oswald’s have again done the school proud with the BIKE IT! To School Challenge, by winning for the 3rd year in row. The school came first in Doncaster and also won their category beating all the participating schools in Yorkshire which is a huge achievement. The school placed 19th overall nationally which is the highest they have managed so far. Students were required to either pedal or scoot to school, each child’s efforts were rewarded with hot fresh toast supplied by Mr Hall and members of staff. The total number of bikes and scooters is added to a national database of which all the schools involved are compared. The school won the challenge last year for their category and were treated to a display by a cycling stunt team. The children and Mr Hall are excitedly waiting to receive their award and what we hope is a fantastic prize. Foundation 2 children were having fun in their science lesson mixing potions whilst learning about Changes. They ended their project by having a magical Wizards and Witches party with face painting and dressing up.

A fun sensory party was used by Year 1 pupils to end their work on the subject of how we hear, see, taste and touch. The children learnt a lot about how our senses work and how we use them in everyday life. Mrs Middlebrooks year 2 class got stuck in making pizzas to promote their healthy eating and good diet topic. Children got to make and create their own healthy toppings, then had the pleasure of eating their own homemade pizza. The ‘Friends of St Oswald’s‘ have been busy fundraising for the School and Pupils with the popular school disco which had a romantic feel for Valentine’s Day. They have also been collecting clothing and fabrics which can be recycled and sold to help raise funds.

Spend some time with your Mum This Mothers Day

F

ed up with flowers and chocolates as the usual choice for Mother’s Day gifts? Are you looking for something a bit different? Something with a bit more meaning….

Some routes to try out

As we all know, spending quality time with Mum is normally an occasional treat, a chat over coffee and cake or maybe Sunday Lunch. When it comes to Mothers Day we look to buy a little something to show our appreciation. The Ramblers is encouraging people to treat their Mum to a stroll in the great out doors.

Rossington (Member only Route) 12.8 km—8 Miles Rating—Easy

What ever your thing, whether it be a gentle stroll taking in the scenery or a more challenging trek, the time spent with your Mum will become a treasured memory. I remember the first (and last) time I climbed a mountain I was with my Mum. It was also her first climb and although we did not have to scramble on all fours, the sense of achievement was amazing and to have shared that moment was very special. The scenery was breath taking and the picnic was guilt free! No matter what your Mum’s fitness level, there is sure to be a route which suits her ability as they all come with a difficulty rating. There is lots of information about the routes so you can check out which walk would be best before venturing out. This can of course be done for free as the Ramblers website offers many routes free of charge, or you can purchase a membership for your Mum which opens up over 45,000 group led walks every year, full access to Ramblers routes, quarterly editions of Walk magazine and more. For details, visit www.ramblers.org.uk/gift

Heron Way

A lovely walk to the west of Rossington using little used footpaths, tracks and very minor roads. The route passes Stancil, now a single farm but previously the site of a Roman Villa and later a fairly extensive farming community.

Sheffield

Norfolk Heritage Trail and Skye Edge Fields (Free) 5.6km—3.4 Miles Rating Leisurely A walk from Sheffield Interchange along part of the Norfolk Heritage Trail. Climbing up from the City Centre, it takes in the iconic Park Hill Flats, The Cholera Monument, Norfolk Park, Manor Lodge and Skye Edge Fields. A walk with glorious views.

Auckley Parish Council Newsletter March/April 2014 New Village Sign – The first of three new ‘Auckley’ village signs has recently been constructed near the river bridge on the approach to Auckley. The sign has been partially funded by the community group, ‘Action for Auckley’ which has given a generous donation towards the project. Flower Tubs – The village green is currently looking very colourful with a host of daffodils in flower and blossom on the trees. Once the daffodils have died back it will be time to plant flowers for the summer. Mr. Clive Hepworth has for a number of years watered the flowers during dry spells, but he is now taking a well-earned rest, and Council wonders whether any residents living nearby would be willing to water the plants during very dry weather conditions. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Parking Outside Shops – Irresponsible motorists continue to park their vehicles on the highway outside the Ellers Lane shops, in spite of newly-painted double yellow lines. Parking at this location puts pedestrians and passing motorists at risk and makes it difficult for residents to access The Paddocks cul-de-sac. DMBC Parking Enforcement Officers have been asked to increase their patrols of the area, and parking tickets will be issued to offenders. Material Spread on Fields – A number of fields at Common Lane are currently being treated with slurry and waste products from food-preparation. Complaints have been received regarding the operation – particularly the number and speed of tankers being used, and the Environment Agency and Doncaster Council have advised that these activities will be monitored. If residents have concerns regarding this issue they can ring the following telephone numbers: DMBC: 01302 736000, Environment Agency hotline: 0800 80 70 60

FAB Parish

Revd Neil Redeyoff and Revd Louise Tinniswood

Traffic Temptation When by friend and colleague, the Archdeacon of Doncaster, retired a couple of years ago, he passed onto me some things that I might find useful. Although I’m still looking for a use a single chopstick! But, one item was a laminated card which said ‘Priest on Call’. He had used it when having to park his car in what might be described as ‘questionable’ locations during pastoral emergencies.

Anyway, a certain minister parked his car on double yellows in town because he was short of time and couldn't find a space anywhere. So, he put a note on the dashboard that read: "I have driven around the block what feels like a 100 times. If I don't park here, I'll miss a very important pastoral appointment, FORGIVE US OUR TRESPASSES." When he returned, he found a parking ticket from a traffic warden along with this note. "I've walked around this block for 10 years. If I don't give you a ticket, I'll lose my job. LEAD US NOT INTO TEMPTATION.” We are currently in the middle of Lent, as Easter falls really late this year, and traditionally it’s a time when we give something up - I tried work, but apparently it’s not allowed - and giving something up isn’t easy. Two years ago I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, and I had to give up lots of things I liked - salted peanuts, crisps, fresh cream meringues, sugar in coffee, and so on. Oh, was it tempting to cave in and eat all those lovely things. However, I resisted, took up cycling at the same time, and now I’m 5 stone lighter, thinner than I was at the age of 21, and fitter than I’ve ever been. Lent for Christians is a time to draw nearer to God, to put to one side something that draws us away from time spent with him. It’s a good exercise, and leaves us spiritually fitter. But even for those who don’t believe, there can be something good in giving something up. What are the things that draw us away from our families and loved ones? Or from leading a healthy lifestyle? Or from buying fair-trade and supporting those in need? Is it time to give something up and become fitter in some way? Blessings. Neil Revd.
