Community News DONCASTER CANCER DETECTION TRUST Here we are, into Spring…hurrah! While waiting for the better weather, we had an exciting day out last month when we were invited, along with other organisations, to see the Intuitive Da Vinci Xi robot at Doncaster Royal Infirmary. We were all encouraged to have ‘hands on’ experience with the robot which was fascinating. Chief Executive Richard Parker OBE said: “Robotic surgery will soon become part of the core curriculum for surgeons and, without the robot, we could lose the ability to train some specialist surgical trainees.” Consultant surgeon Antonia Durham-Hall said: “As improvements are made in the early diagnosis of cancers it is extremely important that advancements are also made in how we treat them, so patients can go on to have a good quality of life post cancer surgery.” DRI are also writing a piece about us in their in-house magazine “Foundations for Health” so watch out for this if you are visiting the hospital. It will also mention our latest acquisition the Fibroscanner which we donated recently to help in the diagnosis of liver disease. On Saturday, 23rd March Sprotbrough Library are having a craft fair from 10am to 12 noon. We will have a stall selling good quality donated jewellery including rings, necklaces, bracelets, etc. There will be a variety of stalls so come along and grab a bargain! If you have any fundraising ideas we would be very pleased to hear from you. Our details are: 22 Wood Street, Doncaster DN1 3LW (entrance by the side of Kerry Gough Florists), first floor (lift available), Room 104. Tel. 01302 325029. Email: info@dcdt.co.uk. Website: dcdt.co.uk. As the office is not fully manned it is best to Email or telephone in advance if you are thinking of coming to see us. As we often mention, it is only through the generosity of local residents and organisations that enable us to donate cancer-related equipment to our local hospitals. In turn, this benefits local people. We cannot thank you all enough.

Friends of Quarry Park

Our February work party was a very busy session. 18 eager volunteers, including a new recruit, and our Ranger Louise gathered in the sunshine and tasks were allocated by our Coordinator Pete. These included cutting back the gorse and brambles encroaching onto the entrance from the Post Office path. Wild garlic plants were planted in the woods and six bags of litter were collected by our super-efficient army of litter pickers. Some unusual objects were found including a fire extinguisher, gas canisters, tennis balls and a pile of leaflets that obviously had not been delivered! There are a variety of ageing benches around the park that have rotting posts so some of these were repaired or replaced. A new bench was installed near the wildflower meadows from timber that has been supplied by the Council, cut from a fallen tree. There will be four more benches installed over the coming months. During the morning, we had two visitors, Anushka from Well Doncaster, who came along to see what we get up to; and Dave from Friends of Jubilee Park dropped by for a chat and assisted with the bench installation compacting the soil with his stylish walking stick. The session ended with refreshments and delicious salted caramel brownies baked by Julie. A successful morning’s work by all involved. Well done! Another task was completed recently in the car park. The Council arranged the delivery of four tons of road planings and 4 of our volunteers Pete, Steve, Richard & Paul spent a couple of hours one sunny morning filling in the many potholes. They did a great job. Still a few holes left but more material will be on the way soon. The group has been successful in applying for free trees through the South Yorkshire Mayor’s Free Trees for Communities Scheme, so we will be busy planting again around the park next month! Work parties are usually held on the first Friday of each month, weather permitting. There is always plenty of work to be done, from litter picking, clearing paths and cutting back vegetation. Equipment is provided but please ensure you wear suitable clothing and footwear. The next events are scheduled for Friday 1st March and Friday 5th April 10am – 12 noon, meet at the Green Flag. Full details will be published on our Facebook page ‘Friends of Quarry Park’ or you can email us at thequarrypark@gmail.com or call us on 07546 595144.
