Welcome to the June 2024 issue of the Barnby Dun & Edenthorpe Arrow.

This month I’m looking forward to spending more time outdoors with family and friends, as we hopefully see the weather improving.

I would love to include more local stories in the Hatfield Arrow. Please email me any details of upcoming events, anything inspiring or positive that has been happening in the community, any good news stories that you would like to share. It can be something your child has achieved or a local team has achieved. I’m sure there is a lot going on and it would be great to be able to share the details.

Also if you or someone you know owns a local business, please send me the details and I will email you the cost for advertising. It would be great to include more local businesses in the Arrow.

The deadline for the July issue is Thursday 13th June.

Best Wishes

DONCASTER CANCER DETECTION TRUST

June….the month of lovely long sunny days and evenings (we hope).

As you know, our charity tries to support as many different cancers as possible.

At our last internal meeting we decided we would try and concentrate this time on those cancers which don’t always get a lot of publicity. Some are hard to detect or have a high morbidity rate such as pancreatic, testicular, bowel and bladder cancers. Naturally it will depend on talks with Doncaster Royal Infirmary as to the kind of equipment they need. Hopefully we will be able to report back next month with further information.

In the meantime, our contact details are: 22 Wood Street, Doncaster DN1 3LW (entrance by the side of Kerry Gough Florists), first floor (lift available), Room 104.

Tel. 01302 325029. Email: info@dcdt.co.uk. Website: dcdt.co.uk.

As the office is not fully manned it is best to Email or telephone in advance if you are thinking of coming to see us.

Cancer never seems to rest, but neither will we and together we will continue the fight!

Post Box Toppers, Barnby Dun

You may have noticed the post box toppers around Barnby Dun.

There is a small group of local dedicated knitters and crocheters regularly decorating the two post boxes in Barnby Dun and lots of local residents have said how much they have enjoyed seeing them over the last few years.

Some of the more recent toppers included the ones from Easter this year, a Tam o’ Shanta for Burns Night, the Christmas toppers and last year the Remembrance Day ‘Tommy’.

Keep your eyes peeled for what’s coming next!

The Friends of Quarry Park

The volunteers had a successful morning at our Work Party on Friday 3rd May. Nineteen of us were joined by 3 Rangers to continue with our bench project. One team installed a replacement bench near Warren Wood, while another group set about installing a new picnic table and benches near St Mary’s Wood. The materials for this project have been purchased by the Friends with funds raised by the volunteers. The Council have also kindly contributed by supplying bench tops and postcrete, as well as ground mesh that will go in next time to keep the surface more accessible and user friendly. The team worked really hard to get it finished in time to use for our coffee break! The table looks amazing, and we hope visitors will enjoy using it over the coming months.

Several other tasks were completed including hedge trimming, clearing weeds from Greens Road steps and clearing brambles from pathways. The litter picking team did a great job as always, collecting 3 bags of litter and a bicycle!

We all enjoyed refreshments and cake at the end, supplied by Julie and Dan, and managed to finish before the rain started! Huge thanks to everyone for their hard work, another great team effort.

The Friends of Quarry Park have been nominated for an award in the Environment category of the Hatfield Town Council’s ‘Pride of our Area’ Awards. The winners will be announced at a presentation event on Friday 10th May. We are very proud to be nominated for this award in recognition of the work our volunteers do.

Some of our volunteers joined us for a social evening recently when we met at Harry’s in Dunsville for fish and chips, followed by a couple of drinks at The Flarepath. It was a great evening with excellent food and was good to get together socially. We even managed to answer some of the quiz questions!!

A couple of dates for your diaries: Our Annual General Meeting will take place on Monday 17th June at 7.30pm at the Flarepath, and we will be holding a coffee morning in aid of group funds, at Hatfield Library on Saturday 27th July 10am – 12 noon. Further details to follow.

Work parties are usually held on the first Friday of each month, weather permitting. There is always plenty of work to be done, including litter picking, clearing paths and cutting back vegetation. Equipment is provided but please ensure you wear suitable clothing and footwear. The next events are scheduled for Friday 7th June and Friday 5th July 10am – 12 noon, meet at the Green Flag. Full details will be published on our Facebook page ‘Friends of Quarry Park’ or you can email us at thequarrypark@gmail.com or call us on 07546 595144.

The Race for City Status: How Doncaster became one of Britain’s Newest Cities

A new book has been published telling the story of Doncaster’s winning campaign to achieve city status. Doncaster secured its coveted city title in 2022 by entering a civic honours competition to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee. This culminated in the visit by King Charles III in November of 2022 to confer city status at a historic ceremony held at Doncaster’s civic Mansion House.

Doncaster became Yorkshire’s eighth city, after Bradford, Hull, Leeds, Ripon, Sheffield, Wakefield, and York, and is the county’s first new city since the 1890s.

‘The Race for City Status: How Doncaster became one of Britain’s Newest Cities’ was written by Jim Carley, who served as Project Director for the campaign, and charts the story of how Doncaster’s winning proposal was developed and written. It not only recounts some of the things that Doncaster is most famous for, such as horseracing and legendary locomotives, but also some of its lesserknown credentials as a city in waiting. It’s a story with everything from Paddington Bear to Ivanhoe, and from the invention butterscotch to prize winning budgerigars.

The city status campaign was developed by a partnership involving Doncaster Council, Doncaster Chamber of Commerce, the NHS, local colleges, Club Doncaster, and many other local organisations. The book shares some of the challenges which the campaign had to overcome, and the political backdrop which shaped the competition.

Whilst the story is focused on Doncaster, the book visits some of the other competitor towns from around the UK, and takes inspiration from cities around the world, in asking what it really means to be a city in the 21st century.

Mr Carley, the author, owns a Doncaster based business which provides proposal writing services to his clients, and he is also the current Vice President of Doncaster Chamber of Commerce. Speaking of the book, Mr Carley said: “It was an absolute honour and privilege to be the Project Director for this campaign, and to write Doncaster’s historic winning application to become a city. So many different people played a role in that success. I hope this book does honour to those achievements and is a faithful replay of Doncaster’s amazing journey.”

The book is published in paperback by Fisher King Publishing and is available from Amazon and from all good on-line bookstores. Kindle and e-reader versions will be available soon.
