Welcome to the June 2023 issue of the Barnby Dun & Edenthorpe Arrow.

This month I’m looking forward to spending more time outdoors with family and friends, as we hopefully see the weather improving, as we head towards the longest day on the 23rd June!

I would love to include more local stories in the Arrow. Please email me any details of upcoming events, anything inspiring or positive that has been happening in the community, any good news stories that you would like to share. It can be something your child has achieved or a local team has achieved. I’m sure there is a lot going on and it would be great to be able to share the details.

Also if you or someone you know owns a local business, please send me the details and I will email you the cost for advertising. It would be great to include more local businesses in the Arrow. The deadline for the July issue is Thursday 15th June

Best Wishes

Hatfield Town Cricket Club

Our first mention this month has to be to those members who have put so much time in over the last few weeks to make sure matches and training has been able to go ahead largely as planned. We are one of the few clubs that have been able to play all our home fixtures but sadly the seniors haven't yet been able to play an away fixture, with some lads still to pick up a ball or bat in anger. Your 1st XI have only played one league and one cup fixture and by chance both were against Parkhead CC. The league fixture was very one-sided with Town coming out on top easily before a rain affected cup fixture saw Town win on runs scored after 10 overs to move into round 2. The 2nd XI have played both home fixtures and had wins against Millhouse Works and Eden Grove to see them top of the league at this early stage. The ladies softball side fielded several juniors as they came up short against a much more experienced Stainborough side. With the both hardball and softball fixtures on the same day we expect to see more of the young talent given game time in the top division softball league this season. The juniors have had a disrupted start with the Under 9's and 15's starting with big wins, whilst the inexperienced 13's fell short at Hensall. The 11's are still to play a league fixture but have been training hard.

Wednesday senior training has been very popular with a great turn out each week and we hope to see this build throughout the season, all players male and female are welcome to come along. Junior Fridays have been off to a good start despite the appalling weather and we welcome any child to come along and join in. There are already a good number signed up for the All-Stars programme following our in school coaching sessions so it promises to be another great year!

As always a big thank you to sponsors and supporters, you are much appreciated!

The Friends Of Quarry Park

Our Volunteer Work Party took place on Friday 5th May. As well as our two DMBC Rangers we were joined by 16 volunteers, including local Councillors Glynis and Lee. Despite the intermittent rain showers, we had a very successful session and completed several tasks.

A team of volunteers headed to the woods to remove several overhanging tree branches from along the pathways as well as cutting back an overgrown hedge near the woods. A couple of the volunteers planted some more wildflower seeds, and the Rangers checked that the Orienteering posts were all present and correct. Our wonderful team of litter pickers set off around the park and collected 4 large bags of rubbish. We ended the session with refreshments and indulged in Coronation themed cakes baked by Debra. Great work by everyone once again. Judging for the Green Flag award took place recently, which seemed to go very well. There were some suggestions made regarding various tasks which would be beneficial, so we are keen to incorporate these into our plan. The team at DMBC did an amazing job before the judging took place by repairing the broken benches, handrails and sign boards. As usual, the work is ongoing and there is always something to do! We are very hopeful that we will retain the Green Flag for another year. The results will be announced in the coming months. Our Community planter is looking good at the moment, planted up in red, white and blue to celebrate the Coronation of King Charles lll. A date for the diary – our Annual General Meeting will take place at 7.30pm on Monday 5th June at The Flarepath, Dunsville. All welcome to attend

Work parties are usually held on the first Friday of each month, weather permitting. There is always plenty of work to be done, from litter picking, clearing paths and cutting back vegetation. Equipment is provided but please ensure you wear suitable clothing and footwear. The next events are scheduled for Friday 2nd June and Friday 7th July 10am – 12 noon, meet at the Green Flag.

Full details will be published on our Facebook page ‘Friends of Quarry Park’ or you can email us atthequarrypark@gmail.com or call us on 07546 595144.

THORNE CAMERA CLUB

Now that spring is here, it is time for all photographers get out and about looking at nature progressing with new leaves and flowers appearing in gardens, parks and woods - get close up and see the fine details and take a nature shot. Look out for the insects warming up in the early sun making it relatively easier to photograph close up, see the full fascinating details of them and while doing so expand your enjoyment of macro photography.

The club was treated to an excellent presentation by Tom Marsh known in the photography world as 'The Flat Capped Photographer'. His talk asked 'What is Photography'? and covered an 'in depth' look at a number of images and the meaning behind them leaving the members food for thought on how and why they take the images they do. Our latest DPI Competition was judged by Ray Brammall from Doncaster Camera Club. Ray Brammall ARPS, DPAGB, APAGB and EFIAP a photographer with expertise in Street photography, Sport, Portraiture and landscapes gave a kindly and detailed critique on each entry giving all members ways to improve their images whether it was composition, over detailed backgrounds or unwanted highlights. Ray's final choice for the competition was:- Joint First Colin Jarvis with 'Dandelion Seed' and Jacki Greenwood with 'Fur Family' Joint Second Bill Mitchell with 'Looking for the Next Meal' and Terry Gunnill with 'Car Street' and Joint Third Steven Salmon with 'Water Droplets', Terry Gunnill with 'I'm Here' and Bill Mitchell with 'Quiet Time at Thorne Lock'.

The programme Highlights up to the summer break are:-

15th May Two cameras Out and About , Speakers - David and Sheila Coates

Monty's Monthly Tip

tccmembership@gmx.co.uk

Do you use UV (Ultra-Violet) filters to protect your lens? There are arguments for and against their use, for instance they will protect the lens from sea spray, dust, sand when on the beach, finger marks, scratches and damage through dropping. The argument against is that it reduces the light to the sensor and reduces the resolution of the image especially if it is a poor filter and the guidance on the quality of filters is by experience and possibly not by price. There is no consensus on the use of UV filters but it may be wise take precautions for situations described above but otherwise it may be reasonable to dispense with the filter. Always fit a lens hood as is will provide additional protection should the camera be dropped.
