Edenthorpe Parish Council

Local Councillor Tony Revill

I would like to introduce myself as the new Edenthorpe Parish clerk.

If anyone would like to hire the Church Balk Centre on Marion Road, Edenthorpe feel free to contact me. We do have some availability.

There are also excellent facilities at the Community Centre, Cedric Rd, Edenthorpe which are available for hire. Please contact booking secretary Mrs A Dinnage on 01302 890100 for further details.

In addition to the above we also welcome the new Chair of Edenthorpe Parish Council – Mr Fred Gee. He is walking the footpaths of our village on a daily basis. He urges everyone to pick up after themselves and not to deposit litter around our village.

Dog fouling is becoming a big issue and he would like to remind everyone to take pride in the village, pick up after your beloved pets, bag it and bin it! The village has numerous dog bins, easily accessible. These are emptied on a regular basis, paid for by the Parish Council.

Please note there is a £1000 fine for anyone not picking up after their pet.

The village also has an ongoing problem with the state of the grass verges. Many residents have voiced their concern and The highways department are currently investigating to hopefully rectify problems that we are having.

The lights have been replaced at the Church Balk Centre recently, it is looking much brighter! If anyone has any spare time, we are looking for volunteers to paint the interior of the building to keep it looking good for the residents of Edenthorpe. Tea and coffee will be provided.

It is with great sadness that I have to inform residents of the loss of Local Councillor Tony Revill a resident of Kirk Sandall who passed away recently.

I had the honour to serve with Tony both as Parish, and DMBC Councils where he made a great contribution over many years to our communities.

Many friends and colleagues attended his funeral services and spoke of the contribution he made to our villages.

He will be fondly remembered by those he helped whether in the Yorkshire health committees, Aurora, Local Councils, Doncaster or in his home villages.

Hatfield Town Cricket Club Under11's are now starting their outdoor net sessions at Carr Side Lane on Friday evenings from 8th April in preparation for the forthcoming season. We are always looking for new members, beginners welcome, so if your boy or girl is interested in joining the squad then get in touch with Richard on 07740215350 for further details.

Hatfield Town Cricket Club would like to offer boys and girls aged 6/7 the opportunity to join a newly formed under 9's team next season. DANUM PROBUS CLUB Danum Probus Club is an organisation for men who have retired from their profession, business or other employment who want to maintain a social network with others who have similar interests.

Danum Probus meets on the first and third Mondays of the month at Town Moor Golf Club, Bawtry Road, Belle Vue, Doncater starting at 10 am.

There is an interesting speaker at each meeting, and also we have several other events during the year. The Crown Green bowling section meets through Spring and Summer, using the greens at Armthorpe Community Centre. Bowling will commence in April. In addition we have events to which wives and partners are invited including Theatre visits, Spring and Autumn lunches, and an Annual Club Holiday. Our meetings at the Golf Club over the next couple of months are 4 April TBA 18 April Adrian Eggleston The Czar’s Bones 2 May John Munford Protecting our Assetts 16 May Pat McLaughlan England’s World Heritage Sites.

Diabetes Uk Doncaster Support Group.

We are having our next Open meeting for the Support group on Wednesday 6th April at 7pm at Edenthorpe Community Hall, Church Balk Gardens Edenthorpe DN3 2NT. Our guest Speaker this time is Naeem Anjam the Pharmacy Manager at Asda Carcroft. He will be giving a talk about The Side Effects from Prescription Drugs for Diabetes.

There will be plenty of time for questions and answers. We want you all to join in and come along and talk with other Diabetics on managing their condition.

At our last meeting we had a lead Diabetic Nurse Annette Johnson talking about Diabetes, we had refreshments and plenty of time for a natter.

We are a very new group and we are holding several events throughout the Summer including awareness sessions in Surgeries, Tesco collection and awareness days in Tesco stores and Open Gala days in different locations around Doncaster when we will have Tombola stores.

We have our Monthly Meetings on the first Wednesday in the Month and as the spring is almost here, we will have the light evenings so making it easier to attend.

Please come along and join us, we are also crying out for more help to put more events on, as we need more people to help at these fundraising events.

Diabetes is a huge Problem and we know people struggle and need help and support with coping with their condition. So come along and see what you can learn and socialise in a nice atmosphere with like minded people. Judy Bowers Founder of the group.

THE FRIENDS OF ST. OSWALD’S CHURCH, KIRK SANDALL The ancient hamlet of Kirk Sandall is mentioned in the Doomsday Book of 1086 and consisted of a ‘big house’, a farm and a cluster of cottages around the church. dedicated to St. Oswald. It also included the neighbouring hamlet of Streetthorpe – which later changed its name to Edenthorpe.

Most of the church was built in the Norman period (11th-12th century) and altered very little until additions made in the Tudor period. In 1521 William Rokeby, who had been vicar at St. Oswald’s at the end of the 1400s, died and left money in his will for a Chantry chapel to be built in his name. This is known as The Rokeby Chapel and is of national historic and architectural importance. It contains monuments and a restored medieval stained glass window.

The village was quite poor with everyone working in agriculture until 1919 when the Pilkington Glass Company acquired land in the area and built a glass factory at Long Sandall. To house its workforce it built a ‘new’ village off Brecks Lane which included many amenities such as the bowling and cricket clubs and the Kirk Sandall Hotel (now the Glasshouse).

By the late 1960s the old village had been demolished leaving the ancient church isolated. A new church and church hall were built in Edenthorpe in 1978 next to the Canon Popham school and St. Oswald’s Church was declared redundant. In 1980 it was taken into the care of The Redundant Churches Fund, now known as The Churches Conservation Trust.

The Friends of St. Oswald’s Church was set up in 2007 to try to make it more accessible by having regular Open Days.
