Community News DANUM PROBUS CLUB
Danum Probus Club is an organisation for men who have retired or are semi-retired from their profession, business or other employment who want to maintain a social network with others who have similar interests. Danum Probus Club meets on the first and third Mondays of the month at Town Moor Golf Club, Bawtry Road, Belle Vue, Doncaster starting at 10 am. The first of our two meetings in May took place on Monday 7, which was well attended despite it being the May Bank Holiday. Our Speaker and Presenter was David Beadsall, who took us off to the Himalayan Range of Mountains with his “Annapurna Circuit”. This was the story of an arduous trek he had undertaken a few years ago around the Annapurna National Park in Nepal. Illustrated with photographs of the spectacular scenery, we were told that there are several mountains named Annapurna, having such original names as Annapurna 1, Annapurna 2 etc. The highest point on the trek was some 17,000 feet at which altitude sickness can be a real problem. During the trek the weather ranged from hot sunny days at lower level to snow fall at higher altitude even though it was summer time. And the people and the food were very goods well. This was a very good presentation about an unusual subject. On Monday 21 May Christine Johnson came to tell us about “The Wonderful Life of the Honey Bee”.Christine locates her hives for most of the year in the woods near Wentworth Woodhouse, and in Summer and Autumn they are on heather moors in the lower Pennines. Christine had a brought a miniature hive (no bees) and showed us how it was constructed in sections and what activities took place in each part. She told us about what were the functions of the different beed in the hive ie the queen, the drones and the workers. After hatching, worker bees spend about two weeks in the hive on tending and cleaning duties before flying out to collect pollen. If a particularly rich source of pollen is found, an individual bee will perform a ‘waggle dance’ to inform its colleagues of the location of the source. Each bee will make about one twelfth of its weight of honey in its short lifetime, which makes one realise how many bees there are in each hive, considering the amount of honey which is obtained. We thoroughly enjoyed this entertaining talk, illustrated by a range if photographs. The next meetings will be on Monday 4 June and Monday 18 June. At the first one, Norman Jones’s subject will be “The Valley of the Kings” and at the next one the subject will be “Some Unsung Heroes and Heroines of Science” presented by Professor Stirling. Both meetings start at 10am at Town Moor Golf Club. Community News A litter pick, organised by Edenthorpe Parish Council, was held on the afternoon of Thursday 29th March. A good team of volunteers backed by Doncaster MBC met in the overflow car park at Tesco Edenthorpe to begin the clear up. Thankfully the weather had also picked up. Keep Britain Tidy donated the bin bags and DMBC provided volunteers with litter grabbers, hi-vis jackets and hoops. The team worked their way around many areas of the village, the main focus being along Thorne Road towards Sainsbury's roundabout. Other areas covered were Church Balk ( due to the huge amount of litter in this area the volunteers were only able to reach the shopping precinct), Mere Lane Bridle Path, Cedric Road, Eden Grove Rd, lane behind Edenthorpe Hall Academy. The hedgerows near to Hungerhill School resulted in 8 full bin bags alone. Throughout the afternoon a total of 38 bags of rubbish were collected. These were taken away by DMBC. Edenthorpe immediately looked so much better and all those involved in the litter pick agreed the 'feel good factor' was shared. Sadly, litter is creeping back but not at the rate as previously. Are residents getting the message that we live in a lovely village? Future litter picks were discussed and will be supported by DMBC, it was decided on a two monthly basis. Keep an eye on notice boards, Social media for forth-coming dates. The more the merrier! Most importantly, please don't drop litter, take it home if no bin is nearby. Dog poo MUST BE BAGGED AND BINNED (NOT LEFT HANGING FROM A TREE OR DUMPED) , if dog excrement is left on the ground it can cause serious illness in young children. Hatfield Town Cricket Club It's been a frustrating, weather interrupted start to the season on the field for HTCC but the big news is off the field in that the club having now received the Planning Approval Notice for a new pavilion. The next big challenge is obtaining quotes and finding the funding necessary to ensure we can meet our ambitions. The existing facilities have served us well but if we want to continue growing at the rate we have over recent seasons a new pavilion and the extra volunteers and players it will attract is a must, not just for the club, but the whole community. We have proved that the demand is there we now need the help in meeting it. On the field the 1st XI have suffered three league defeats against early pacesetters in games that could easily have gone the other way, no more so than at home to South Kirkby when the visitors posted 199-9 with Alec Elliott 3-37 and James Winstanley 3-38 the main wicket takers. In reply Town got off to flying start with Alec 21 and Luke Cockburn 38 leading the way but an excellent unbeaten 57 from Ellis Pattison proved in vain as they finished 176 all out. They made amends with a convincing 7 wicket cup win at home to Featherstone, three wickets for Craig Pattison and James Winstanley and two for youngster Andrew Decent restricted the visitors to 162 before Luke Black 66 and Gareth Stent 36 eased Town home. The 2nd XI have only played two games so far and have found the going tough away from home but hope to get back on track soon. The midweek XI have been in great form with 3 wins from 3 in convincing fashion. All the players have contributed to a great start with Rhys Mann and Tommy Hyde making match winning contributions. They will be hoping to continue their good form over the future weeks. The juniors have shown that hard works pays off with the Under 9's currently unbeaten and a good win away at Brodsworth for the Under 13's. Keep up the great effort everyone!

So What Are You Waiting For‌.? A Dismal 50 shades of grey winter has taken it's toll. And the rain - it's never stopped, bringing misery and life changing events to many. The days are short , the nights long. Off to work in the dark. And back too. Driving home on the motorway, dazzled by headlights from vehicles in endless queues. Stop start all the way home. Colour is the fruit of life And a reason to travel and observe and enjoy. Coarse and fine, volcanic black, pure white and golden beaches. Often untamed wilderness. Ronseal tanned skin. Intense blue sky. Lavender covered fields, dense rainforest, manicured lawns , Keukenhof tulips. Turquoise seas, green copper domes,Rastafarian hats, multicoloured jogging shorts running by. The exquisite Northern Lights. White horses of The Camargue. Vineyards, undercover rhubarb. Olive, lemon and orange groves Fresh strawberries. Banana and peach. A fruit salad in glorious technicolour. Tree lined boulevards brighten cityscapes. Silver birch and Oak. Wide open spaces. The magical Black Forest - good enough to eat too. Blood red Tomatoes, Dubrovnik's terracotta roof tiles. The Blue train in South Africa. The piercing coal-black forgiving eyes of our two Golden Retrievers - darling Holly and Beth. Orange robed Indian pilgrims. Lecce's magnificently decadent pink stone. Balsamic vinegar and Olive oil, extra virgin of course! The whitewashed houses in Santorini set against a backdrop of volcanic cliff. Lobster pinks Brits - shell suited and shell -shocked. Brightly painted Bergen houses contrasting with the pure white wooden homes on Stavanger down the coast. Graffiti stained streets artisan created mosaics. Venetian black gondola, honey toned limestone, crystal clear glacial lakes. Neon signs that lighten the gloom - epileptics look away now. A heavy steaming inky black coffee. My favourite drink. Every coffee bean has a story to tell. Silvery sardines on the barbie. Gilt- framed artwork, smoky dark wooden panelling in historic heritage dwellings. Tricolored bunting. Red and white check tablecloths. Scottish tartan. Shimmering seas. Multi coloured fishing boats bobbing in hypnotic rhythm. Medieval architecture and frescoes. Cobbled streets, shiny from centuries of foot fall. Heather clad Yorkshire moors, wisteria covered Cotswold stone. Orange and mustard yellow lobster pots. Spectacular white limestone rock formations. I could go on but it's up to you now. There is a big colourful world out there. You don't have to be rich to travel well . Ray Bradbury once said " STUFF YOUR EYES WITH WONDER, LIVE AS IF YOU'D DROP DEAD IN TEN SECONDS. SEE THE WORLD. IT'S MORE FANTASTIC THAN ANY DREAM MADE .... " SO WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR ?
