Editor’s Letter...

The Autumn season has arrived officially however it feels like we have missed a season! Where was summer? Did anyone see it?? As the nights draw in and the heating goes on, we prepare ourselves for the new season’s events, the Harvest Festival, Halloween and Guy Fawkes Night. Maizie Maze have their ever popular Shriek week and Pumpkin Hunt running through the half term week at the end of October. After the success of their last Halloween Party, Kilham Hall Management committee will be hosting another on Sunday 28th October. Tickets will be available from 1st October at Branton Post Office and are priced at £1.00 per child. I would expect the tickets will go quickly so don't leave it too late as they only have a limited number available. If you are planning your own Guy Fawkes evening, Hydroactive at Branton Garden Centre are once again selling fireworks with their buy one get one free offer. There are also reminders of Christmas with many local venues already offering seasonal events and menus. There is a notice in this month’s Arrow regarding industrial action effecting the Green bin collection over the next few weeks. All of Doncaster is affected, however there are some areas where the recycle boxes, blue and clear bags are affected also.

News, News, News, News, News, News... Petition for a Safe Crossing Area on Doncaster Road. The petition for a safe crossing area which was signed by nearly 300 local people, was submitted to DMBC Transportation Services Department on Monday 10th September. The petition was supported by Ward Councillor Yvonne Woodcock, Branton St Wilfrid’s Primary School and Cantley with Branton Parish Council. On Friday 21st September we received a response from the Council to say they could not justify our request for a safe crossing on Doncaster Road in Branton due to other road safety priorities in the borough. Other issues were raised such as the lack of ‘incidents’ on the road and the small number of pedestrians who use this road. A copy of the letter from the council will be available at Branton post office if anyone wishes to read their response in full. We will be responding to the letter and will update you in the November issue of The Arrow. If anyone would like to write a letter of support to the council, please direct it to Neil Firth, Transportation Services Department,, DMBC.

Poppy Appeal

2012

This year, the Poppy Appeal begins on 27th October and once again, I am asking for help with door to door collecting in Blaxton and Finningley. Last year, we collected £948.32 from our efforts, but we one of our volunteers has left the area. I was delighted that we raised 5387.53 in Auckly, Blaxton, Branton and Finningley combined including £101.75 that was gift aided. I appeal to tax payers to ask for a gift aid envelope if they are donating £2.00 or more. Thank you for helping us raise a record amount last year. Please help us to raise as much this year! For more information on helping with collections, please contact Chris Adamson Honorary Organiser 01302 770583

AUCKLEY PARISH COUNCIL SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2012 Auckley Show, August 2012 The 2012 Auckley Show was fantastic with a record number of visitors. There was something for everyone including a display of vintage cars, a whole variety of stalls and displays, horse jumping and new ventures such as the ‘Fun Dog Show’. A huge amount of planning and hard work is needed to stage an event of this nature, and members of the Auckley Show Committee are to be congratulated for providing the village with a very enjoyable and successful Show.

Public Footpaths in Auckley The Parish Council is currently liaising with Doncaster Council’s Footpaths Officer regarding blocked paths and definitive widths of public footpaths in Auckley Parish.

Poppy Wreath Council will be funding a poppy wreath which will be laid at the Blaxton War Memorial on Remembrance Sunday in November.

July Flooding Following the July flooding of several gardens and garages in Auckley, two members of staff from Severn Trent attended the September Parish Council meeting and spent almost an hour answering residents’ questions and giving a full and detailed account of measures which have been put in place to try and alleviate further problems. They have also agreed to visit house-holders who have been affected by the flooding.

Bin & Recycling Collection Changes Due to Industrial Action Green bin collections Due to industrial action announced by UNITE members working for SITA UK, residents are advised that there will be no green bin collections in Doncaster from Friday 21st September until Monday 15th October. Green bin collections have been temporarily suspended so resources can be redirected to minimise disruptions to black bin collections during the period of industrial action. Household Waste Recycling Centres will remain open as usual and can be used by residents to dispose of their household and garden waste. Black bin collections Residents are being asked to put their black bins out on their usual collection day, during their usual black bin collection weeks only. Green box collections Green box collections for the majority of the borough will remain unaffected by the action. However, households which usually have collections on a Monday or a Friday will see this recycling service reduced to every other week until Friday 12th of October. Residents living in Blaxton and Finningley, who usually have their collection on a Friday should only put out their green box, blue bag and clear bag on Friday 21st September and Friday 5th October. Residents living in Auckley, Branton and part of Finningley who usually have their collection on a Monday should only put out their green box, blue bag and clear bag on Monday 24th September and Monday 8th October. All waste and recycling services should return to normal on Monday 15th October. Clinical waste services and business waste and business recycling services will be unaffected by the action. Information about any latest developments are available via www.doncaster.gov.uk/recycle Council’s Customer Contact Centre 01302 736000.

News from Hayfield Lane Primary School

It’s all change at Hayfield Lane Primary School: We have started the new school year with a new look school uniform and Logo. We decided to change the colour of our sweatshirts and sent out a parental questionnaire; the favourite colour voted for was red. To complete the new look we now have a silver and red tie along with black Trousers/Skirt that makes our children look very smart. We are all very excited about our newly formed link with the Vulcan bomber at the airport. The Staff, Governors and Children were all delighted when they confirmed that we could use the Vulcan as our logo on our school uniform. The Vulcan team are also very excited with the local link; more news will follow in a later addition of the Arrow. We also have new names for our classes; they are now called Robin, Starling, Kingfisher, Owl, Hawk, Kestrel and Eagle.

In the Kestrels class,

their Learning Challenge this term involves comparing Auckley with Castleton in the Peak District. They will be learning about the history and geography of each location and deciding where they would rather live. They visited Castleton in the middle of September and had a great time exploring the countryside! They looked around the village, marking the range of businesses on their maps and comparing them to what we have in Auckley. They visited Treak Cliff Cavern where they learnt all about Blue John Stone and enjoyed visiting the Witch’s Cave. Finally they completed the Three Rocks Walk, learning about the hills of Castleton and searching for fossils in the dry stone walls. They really enjoyed their day in Castleton and are looking forward to the rest of their Learning Challenge!

Hayfield Lane’s Gardening Club

has had a busy summer. They entered the Yorkshire Show Vegetable Box Competition where they had to grow a range of vegetables in a special box. Part of the competition involved keeping a diary to show the progress of their box and they were delighted to win an award for their diary! During the summer holidays, they entered a tray of vegetables and a vase of sweet peas into the Auckley Show. These had all been grown by the children. They couldn’t believe it when their sweet peas were awarded 3rd place and their tray of vegetables were 1st! They are currently looking forward to the Doncaster In Bloom Awards. The judges came to interview the children last term and they have been shortlisted in the Schools category.

News From Branton St Wilfrid’s Primary School School Leavers’ and New Starters Year 6 Leavers At the end of term we said goodbye to our Year 6 children and wished them well as they prepared for the next step of their educational journey. We joined with other Diocesan schools at Doncaster Minster for the Leavers’ Service, where our Year 6 sang “Here I Am to Worship” beautifully at the beginning of the service. On the last day of term the whole school went to St Wilfrid’s Church where we celebrated the time Year 6 spent with us as they shared their memories. We always look forward to hearing from our leavers and we had our first visitors at the beginning of term, sharing their experiences of The Hayfield School so far (notably homework!) and looking very smart in their new uniforms. We wish them all well. New Starters! Our new children are settling well into their school life at Branton. We have staggered starts so that the children become used to their adults and routines in small numbers and for shorter periods to begin with, increasing to full time in October. We have a strong family ethos at our school, so each day the new children join the rest of the children at playtimes, where we know our caring children will play with them and help them settle in quickly. We have a beautiful display in the hall with the title “We are Here!” Each Class R child has painted a picture of themselves which is displayed alongside a photograph. We look forward to sharing their class news with you soon.

The Olympics We celebrated the London Olympics in the Summer Term with our special Olympic Week, which included a visit from one of our parents, Mrs Britten, who won a bronze medal for Taekwondo at the Barcelona Olympic Games, and the appearance of an Olympic torch at Sports Day. Many of our children travelled to London to watch Olympic events or just to soak up the atmosphere. For summer homework our P.E. subject leader asked the children to produce homework about the Olympics.

Friendship Week

Friendship Week At the beginning of each new school year we hold “Friendship Week” in school. Each class worked on different activities with a friendship theme, for example writing poems or descriptions of friends, painting their portraits or thinking about the qualities which make a good friend. One of our governors made friendship bracelets at lunchtime and we shared our work and ideas with parents at the end of the week. Our School Council produced a leaflet called “Be a Friend –Not a Bully!” which is updated annually and sent home with each child.

School Garden Our school garden was designed by members of the School Council and has now been established for a year. Each class takes responsibility for a bed, linking their growing to topics in the curriculum, for example Class 6 have a vegetable plot linked to their World War Two topic, when people were encouraged to grow their own food. Our current Class 2 were delighted to see the progress of their sunflowers and beans planted before the break. We hope you enjoyed reading our news and look forward to sharing more of our activities next month. Best Wishes, C. Barnes, Acting Head Teacher

Auckley School News The new school term has started very well here at Auckley School and promises to be very eventful with lots of exciting things planned. Visit from Assistant Director of Education At Auckley School we are always excited to welcome visitors and show them around our school. Early this term Jo Moxon, assistant director of education for Doncaster was invited to come and look around. She looked around the school and visited all of the children during her stay. The children in year 1 were keen to book her a holiday to a foreign shore from their travel agency (role play area) Auckley Show Winner One of the most popular clubs at Auckley School is the gardening club. Every week lots of children in all age ranges are keen to get their hands dirty and nurture the lovely plants and flowers. We are very lucky to have members from our community who come along and help us. Members from the local allotment have been showing us their green fingers and teaching us lots about growing vegetables.

Auckley’s Budding Poets Recently children at the school have been entered into a poetry competition and the successful entrants have been chosen to be published in a poetry book. Well done to all those who entered and have been selected. There were some amazing poems about many different topics and themes. We certainly have some very talented poets here at Auckley School NSPCC Visit Over the next few weeks we will be raising money for the NSPCC full stop campaign. This week Lynda came in to talk to us about the work the charity do and gave lots of useful advice to the children about “child line” All the children are keen to raise funds for the charity and are now thinking of a variety of fun ways to do this. The theme is based around healthy work outs so each class will organise their own unique work out session. Anything and everything from athletics to Zumba has been mentioned. “Come on teachers – shake the dust off those leotards” !!!

Ocean Liners, Shire Horses, Forest Fires Can you work out what the three things in the title above have in common? I enjoy watching documentaries on the TV, particularly about how things are made. The last one I watched was about the construction of a luxury cruise ship. It was huge! Bigger even than my shoes, which have at times been compared to canal barges! My favourite bit was the view of the bridge. The camera panned around and showed us the radar screens, the hundreds of buttons, the panoramic windows, the engine speed controllers, and the captain’s chair. But what about the ships wheel? Where was that? Well. Think Long John Silver, Pirates of the Caribbean, or even Captain Pugwash (I was a child of the 70’s) and you would be absolutely...wrong. No massive ships wheel with which the captain had to do battle in a storm. Not even a smaller modern wheel that could be turned easily. Instead, a very small joystick that you might see any child (or me) using with their Xbox. (other game consoles are available) Amazing! How can something so huge, so heavy, so powerful, so colossal, so epic, be controlled by something so small!! In a similar way a huge shire horse is controlled by a very small piece of metal in its mouth. This massive beast, taller even than me, can be guided by something very small in comparison. Then we have a huge forest fire. These can be started by just one tiny spark, a carelessly discarded cigarette, or tiny piece of glass in the sun, and literally hundreds of square miles of trees, farmland, and property can be destroyed. The connection? In each case something very tiny can have a massive effect. I wonder how many disagreements have turned nasty because of an ill thought out word. I wonder how many relationships have broken down because someone said the wrong thing? I wonder how many arguments have turned to violence because a mouth was put in gear and a brain left in neutral? I wonder how many wars have been caused by an evil and threatening tongue? It only takes a spark, remember, to set off a forest fire. A careless or wrongly placed word out of your mouth can do that. By our speech we can ruin the world, turn harmony to chaos, throw mud on a reputation, send the whole world up in smoke and go up in smoke with it...You can tame a tiger, but you can’t tame a tongue—it’s never been done. The tongue runs wild, a wanton killer. (James 3. The Message Bible) Food for thought perhaps in today’s world. Blessings Revd.
