Editors Letter...

Welcome to our Summer issue of the Arrow, you will find this months issue jam packed with fayres, concerts, shows, tea parties, all events taking place locally in July and August. If the lovely weather we have had lately continues, they all promise to be a great day out for everyone! Well done to Emily Coulter from St Wilfrids Primary School in Branton. The PTA held a poster competition to help promote their Summer fayre within the community with the winning poster being published on the front page of July‘s Arrow. Emily will help Mrs Crayton launch the balloon race at the fayre. Well done to everyone else who entered the competition, all of the posters will be used around the village as the school would like to welcome all members of the local community to their fayre. The Auckley Show is warming up too and there will be an updated schedule in the August issue of the Arrow. Both Finningley and Auckley have faryes on Sat 10th July. Finningley Community group have planned a fun day for all the village to enjoy and Hayfield Lane Primary School have their summer fayre too, again, everyone is welcome to both of these events. All of these events take lots of time and planning and your presence is always welcome greatly appreciated. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to this month‘s arrow and all the advertisers who support us. The deadline for the August issue is Wednesday 14th July. THANK YOU TO PARISH HANDYMAN Auckley Parish Council is sorry to lose the services of Mr. Harry Baker who has performed his duties as Parish Handyman with great diligence and conscientiousness since 1983, and been a great asset to the village. The Parish Council and community wish him well for the future.

Results for the June 2010 Auckley Show 200+ Club From L: David Higgins (MD of The Higgins Group), Michael Higgins, Barry Lifsey and Margaret Lindley

On Monday 14th June, David and Michael Higgins from The Higgins Group (Potato Merchants) officially dedicated a tree they purchased for the village to celebrate 50 years of trading in Finningley. The gift was made last year, but the tree was planted in March 2010. It was agreed that the tree should be used annually to celebrate Christmas so David Lindley, Chair of Finningley Parish Council and Barry Lifsey, Vice Chair did their research and came up trumps with this beautiful 6 year old Normand tree that has come all of this way from Germany. The tree is now thriving and a brass plaque has been displayed in front of the tree to remember this special occasion and gift. Margaret Lindley stood in for her husband David who sent his best wishes for this special event.

News, News, News, News, News, News... It was great to meet Ben Parkinson once more to support three worthy causes. Despite some shocking weather at the start of the day, the enthusiasm of those involved made this day very worthwhile.‖

Caroline with Sgt Des White (left) and members of The Rifles.

Caroline joins Help for Heroes Charity Day Don Valley MP Caroline Flint joined a charity day at Hayfield Lakes this week to raise funds for Help for Heroes, Mayflower Animal Sanctuary and Phase Worldwide. The day, which was sponsored by Stafforce Recruitment, was supported by the Rifles Regiment and included a fishing competition and a dog show. Bombardier Ben Parkinson joined Caroline to launch a rocket starting the fishing competition and ending with a brass band performance from the Deepcar Brass Band, Sheffield.

―Help for Heroes has really caught the public imagination and has already raised millions in just a few years. And it was interesting to be introduced to the work of Phase Worldwide, which trains and supports workers in some of the poorest villages in Nepal to run local health centres, schools and providing goats to generate income. Phase‘ philosophy is very much to give the Nepalese villagers a hand up not a hand out, leaving them stronger and more capable to improve their health and local economy.‖ Ms Flint also met Sergeant Des White and his team from The Rifles. The MP said: ―The Rifles should be the first stop for any young person from Doncaster looking to join the army. Today‘s army offers over 140 different jobs. But the Rifles‘ history dates back to Sharp‘s Rifles in the Napoleonic war. The Rifles serve our country well on the front line on the other side of the world and their support for today‘s event was fantastic.‖

Said Caroline: ―This Charity Day gets bigger every year and should raise over £5,000.

News, News, News, News, News, News... Tuesday Club at Finningley A group of our members were treated to a guided tour of Potteric Carr Nature Reserve in May. The reserve is the flagship of over 80 managed by Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and is one of the largest urban nature reserves in the country. The area covers approx 500 acres. Our guides were Giles and Renee Braithwaite enthusiastic supporters and volunteers at the centre. We visited several of the numerous hides overlooking the different lakes and had time to concentrate on looking out and listening for interesting specimens. These included Tufted Duck, Sheld- duck, Little Grebe (Dabchick), Reed Buntings and even a Jay but the highlight for us all was seeing a Kingfisher perching on a branch with a fish in its beak. It was obviously ―well trained‖ as it spent a considerable time there before it entered the nest in the bank and then re-emerged doing its characteristic dip in the water before disappearing from view. As well as the birds to watch the trees were at their best at this time, clothed in blossom and there were innumerable wild flowers to spot. Much to our surprise a startled deer put in an appearance. After our exertions we were able to treat ourselves to tea and cake in the cafe. Now is obviously a good time to see nesting and migrating birds but interest is to be had all year round. In Summer there are orchids, butterflies and dragonflies, in Autumn fungi and over wintering birds and the busiest time of all is Winter. Thank you to Giles and Renee for their knowledge and time. And apologies for not taking photographs, I was too busy peering through my binoculars! Do pay Potteric Carr a visit soon. It can be found opposite B&Q, just turn left at the roundabout instead of right! Take binoculars if you have them, they will be invaluable. Flowers for Someone Special Branton St Wilfrid’s Primary School is pleased to nominate Mrs H. Bailey for a special bouquet of flowers. Mrs Bailey has been a dedicated and highly regarded member of our staffing team for more than 22 years. During this time she has been a class teacher, a member of the Senior Leadership team and in recent years she has taught classes throughout school to enable teachers to have dedicated time out of class for their planning, preparation and assessment (as well as leading Art and History in school, organizing regular art competitions in school, taking children on the residential visit to Marrick Priory and the list goes on!) Mrs Bailey is retiring at the end of July and as well as looking forward to a well deserved rest, Mrs Bailey will be able to spend lots of time with her beautiful new granddaughter! We know Mrs Bailey will continue to keep in touch with friends and colleagues at school and we wish her a very happy and enjoyable retirement.

The Arrow and Petalsflorist would love to send someone special a bouquet. Also, listen to Trax FM to hear ‗Someone Special‘ in the morning!

News from Branton St Wilfrid’s C.E. Primary School There are lots of exciting visits taking place this term.

Classes R and 5 Visit to the National Railway Museum, York As part of their history studies, Class R and Class 5 visited The National Railway Museum in York. Below are some extracts from Class 5 recounts of the visit. “On Tuesday 8th June Class 5 visited the National Railway Museum in York. First we went into the Great Hall, where we completed a quiz about the N.R.M. Our group had to answer some questions about the black and gold gates, the turntable and the trains. My favourite train was the Mallard because I liked the colour, which is called the „Livery,‟ and because it was built in Doncaster. I also enjoyed sitting on the Japanese Bullet train and watching the presentation.” By Bethany Miller “After the train quiz a man told us a story about what the trains did during the Second World War. He told us how trains were very useful as they carried bombs and bullets from one place to another. As well as transporting munitions, they also transported evacuee children from towns or cities to live in the countryside where it was safer, because factories were built in towns and cities and the Germans might bomb these. He told us the sad story of the bombing of York station when German planes followed the Edinburgh sleeper train into the station and dropped their bombs. There was a lot of Tosadly advertise please call 07795 387937 damage and ninety-one people died.” By Mia Lawrence

Class 2 Visit to Cannon Hall, Barnsley On Thursday 10 June, Class 2 thoroughly enjoyed a Victorian Role Play Day at Cannon Hall, Barnsley. The whole day was organised to give the children a real-life experience of being a Victorian Servant. Both staff and children had to dress up in suitable attire, and on arrival at Cannon Hall were sent in through the servants‟ entrance! Throughout the day the children took part in a range of activities to allow them to experience the different jobs the servants did in a wealthy Victorian home. These ranged from polishing the master‟s boots, to churning cream into butter for the family to enjoy for their tea. The visit finished with us all enjoying a traditional Victorian lunch that the children had prepared themselves through the morning, and had cooked on the range. It was a fantastic visit, and all of the children assure me that they would have enjoyed being a Victorian servant! Mrs Dunstan

Class 4 visited Conisbrough Castle as part of their topic on Life in A Medieval Castle. We had a guided tour of the keep, looking at the different rooms and what they would have been used for. We counted the steps to the very top of the keep and – wow – what a view from the top! We walked around the outside of the castle and looked at ways of getting in if we had decided to attack it. After lunch there was a little time for dressing up as people who would have lived or worked in the castle. Then we investigated the „bailey‟, looking at the different buildings which would have been there but are now ruined. The children also did some lovely sketches of the keep to bring back to school. News from Hayfield Lane Primary School

ECO DAY

To help with the launch of our Eco Day MP Caroline Flint came in to school to chat with our Eco group, the Green Dragons. She asked them about their fundraising and how they were helping to make the school greener. The children talked to the Caroline about their plans to sponsor an endangered animal with the money they raised and also to buy plants for the school. At morning break the Eco shop was open .Children came and bought bookmarks, badges, and finger puppets which had all been made by the Green Dragons. They also bought green buns and biscuits and Bike It Tom was on hand with healthy drinks and fruit. The Treasure Hunt was a big hit. Each Year group took it in turns to find animals that had been hidden in and around school from the clues given. After all that hunting the children were ready for their Green Eco dinner. Our new school cook, Mrs Healey, had created a fun and eco friendly menu. Earthly sausages, sandy chips and broccoli trees were served followed by muddy cakes and green jelly all washed down with ocean apple juice. In our celebration assembly the green raffle was drawn with the four lucky winners receiving furry toy animals and plant growing kits. The Eco Day had raised over £300. A massive thank you to everyone who helped make the day such a success.

Careers and Enterprise week

Alan Sugar should look no further than Hayfield Lane Primary for his next Junior apprentice as the children had to come up with a money making product. Each class were given £30 from which they had to make as much profit as possible. There was fierce completion as the children and the teachers entered in to the spirit of commerce to sell their goods. Among the items being sold were - What will it be trees? From F1 and F2, pebble pets from year 1, bracelets from year 2, assorted bookmarks and football puppets were on sale from years 3 & 4, year 5‘s box of delights were a big hit but year 6 were the clear winners with their personalised bookmarks, making a huge £100 profit. All in all a very successful and enterprising week.

Year 3 & 4 Cricket On Wednesday 12 th May a team of 10 children from Years 3 & 4 took part in a cricket tournament at Branton School. The competition was against all of the local primary schools and was split into 2 parts. The first part was a skills based set of activities where children earned points for our school through bowling, batting and fielding games. For the second part the children played matches against each of the schools. The children played extremely well with lots of good team work and excellent cricket skills. Hayfield Lane were the overall winners of the competition. Well done to the children and thank you to the parents who supported the event. Year 6 Rounders On Thursday 27th May, a team of 9 children from Year 6 took part in a rounders tournament at Auckley School. They played a total of 5 matches winning 2 and losing 3. Overall the team finished 4 th. They all played extremely well with batting being a particular strength of the team. A big thank you to the parents who got the children to Auckley and stayed to watch as well as giving top coaching tips to the children in between games. Year 4 trip to Magna On Wednesday 12 th May our year 4 children went on a trip to Magna. They spent the morning in a Rockets and Balloons workshop. The children were shown how to make explosions using simple household ingredients and they had fun experimenting with the different chemical reactions seeing who could cause biggest explosion. Then it was on to the fantastic outdoor play area where it wasn‘t just the children who had fun with the teaching staff testing out the zip slide too! After lunch it was on to explore the 4 elements where the children learnt about Fire, water, Earth & Air and saw the fantastic and hot fire tornado. Doncaster Advanced Motorists History of the Highway Code Dear readers, 1st June 2010 marks the 75th anniversary of the introduction of the driving test in the UK. Drivers today still need to continually improve their driving techniques in increasingly demanding driving conditions and keep their skill levels up to date. Our driving tests, however, have changed little over the years and an improvement in driving standards is needed to fill the gap. Although cars are becoming easier to drive – with much improved brakes and suspension as well as power-steering and a host of other safety systems, traffic has significantly increased and traffic networks have become immensely more complex. Therefore, the driver needs far more understanding of what‘s going on outside the car. In the UK, 71 per cent of road deaths occur on rural roads. It is improving the driver that will make the single biggest improvement to road safety in the future. In 1935 the driving test was introduced: within a year the death toll had fallen by nearly a thousand

In 1934, 7,343 people were killed on Britain's roads when there were just 2.4 million vehicles. In 2008 there were two-thirds fewer deaths (2,538), but fourteen times as many vehicles (34 million)

In 2008 the learner pass rate was 41 per cent for women and 47 per cent for men.

However, that still leaves plenty of room for improvement. The 1931 edition: cost one old penny and contained 18 pages of advice, compared to 133 pages in the 2007 edition. The 1935 edition included advice to drivers of horse drawn vehicles to ‗rotate the whip above the head; then incline the whip to the right or left to show the direction in which the turn is to be made. Since those early days, regular revisions of the Code have reflected changes in technology and developments in traffic management and road safety. Diagrams of road signs - just ten signs in all - were first seen in the second edition, as was a warning about the dangers of driving when affected by alcohol or fatigue. Stopping distances made their first appearance in the third edition, along with new sections giving hints on driving and cycling. The arrival of motorways in the late 1950s led to the inclusion, in the fifth edition, of a new section on motorway driving, explaining such things as how to use exit slip roads and advising drivers to avoid drowsiness by stretching their legs at the parking or service areas. The 70-page 1978 edition introduced the Green Cross Code for pedestrians and the new orange badges for the disabled. Prompted by soaring car crime statistics, the amended version contained advice on vehicle security. The 1990s saw a new format taller booklet and the inclusion of a section geared to the new driving theory test, which in the current edition has now become part of the Code itself. St Saviours, Auckley

St Oswald’s & Holy Trinity, Finningley

I DON’T LIKE FOOTBALL!! I spent the other Friday evening with our youth group as their guest speaker. They had the opportunity to ask the vicar anything they liked. One of my own children thought it would be helpful to prime a friend to ask the first question… ―So Neil, what do you think of the World Cup?‖ My reply went something like this… “I don‟t like football, because for the next month we‟ll have nothing but thatl on the television. BBC will be showing England verses the USA, which could test our „special relationship‟, BBC2 will have Lithuania verses Iceland, with Iceland using Ash in defence, ITV an international derby game with Australia playing New Zealand, Channel 4 will have Russian playing China, and should anyone score then diplomats will be called in, and finally Channel 5 will be showing a re-run of the 1966 world cup final with a telephone vote for different endings. So, I‟ll turn to the Discovery Channel on Sky, only to find „How the Word Cup ball was designed‟ shown in 28 one hour shows, and later Mega Builders – „How we built the stadiums‟. The history channel will be showing the proper version of the 1966 World Cup Final, with no optional telephone vote, and the Design Channel will be displaying the latest in team kit - don‟t those rhinestones and flared shorts look gorgeous! In search of some kind of football free viewing I‟ll turn to the Motor Sport Channel, except it‟ll be showing „Transporting A World Cup Football Team – How We Built The Coach.” In absolute, and total desperation, I‟ll seek out the shopping channel, where they are now selling, at ridiculously low prices, flags of all nations (colours may vary), or „Kits for Kitties‟ – adorn your feline friend in the latest kit (as seen on the Design Channel) or „Boots for your Billy (Goat)‟ – two pairs of boots for the four legged kid in your family, just £49.99 (postage and packing extra). In the end I‟ll turn on News 24, and I hope and pray that I don’t see a report about football violence, hooliganism, racism, or anti-social behaviour. Because if that happens, then that‟s when I really don‟t like football” At Pentecost we‘re told that people from all over the world were gathered in one place. Sound familiar? It‘s then reported that through the power of the Holy Spirit each of the different nationalities heard a group of ordinary men from Galilee, with no previous language training, speaking to them in their own mother tongue about God‘s love for them. This tells us that God sees every nation as equal, and that his message of love was for all people. So, I pray that during the World Cup we would see a demonstration of love and respect for one another - win or lose – acknowledging that we are all the same, regardless of nation, and created in the image of God himself. Indeed, why should that stop even after the final whistle is blown? Blessings Revd.
