Editors letter... Before going to print, there was speculation regarding the closure of many of our local libraries in Doncaster.

Times are changing, but our libraries are too. They provide many services to all walks of life and to lose them would leave a hole in our communities. Cusworth Hall hosts the ‘1950’s Having it So Good’ exhibition which runs from 12th February until 24th April this year.

The exhibition celebrates this period which began with rationing and seen the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II and the Festival of Britain. There will be iconic objects on show including a Clarice Cliff Tea Set, Muffin the Mule and Sooty Puppets.

There is also a 1950‘s playtime drop in on Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th February 1.pm to 3pm. Make and take crafts inspired by the era of DIY toys and games. Normal admission prices apply.

Christmas Concerts Thank you for all the positive comments we received about the performances by the children in the concerts at the end of last term. All children in school took part in some form or other and a great time was had by performers and audiences alike. I think the children did particularly well to get the performances to such a level despite losing three days rehearsal time.

The boys attempted to steal the show but this time were kept in order by Amelia – can you spot her above?

Year 4 Visited Conisbrough Castle Brave knights entered the crowded arena, Heaving their heavy armour, Marching towards the king.

Waving at the screaming audience, They bowed down to their king.

Knights, staring at each other, the battle began.

Swords clashing, crowds screaming, Blood erupting from an arm like a volcano exploding.

Agonizingly, one fell to the ground clenching his leg.

The other marching towards the king, bowing down, The king held up his arm and shouted Champion!

Fans were screaming as loud as a dinosaur‘s footsteps, As his opponent lay still on the floor, dead.

Using a sharpened lip liner, rest your hand on your chin for support and steadily draw around the outline of your lip. Using a lip brush, apply your chosen colour in small strokes, blot with a tissue and apply a second coat. Doncaster Advanced Motorists Road Signs Dear Readers, The ending of the red flag requirement in 1896 heralded the ear of the motorcar and some motoring associations took up the business of placing signs. The Motor Car Act of 1903 made local authorities responsible for placing certain warning and propitiatory signs.

For crossroads steep hills and dangerous bends.

A hollow red triangle indicated a warning sign a solid red disc signified prohibitions. Speed limit signs had a hollow white ring above the plate giving the speed limit in figures. Other notices were on diamond shaped boards.

Advanced Drivers know what all road signs mean and update their knowledge from time to time with a glance from the Highway Code. Road signs are the shape they are because, even if you can‘t see the sign clearly, say in fog / snow or heavy rain, you‘ll still know when you see a triangular sign that there may be a significant hazard ahead.

That‘s why the Stop sign is shaped octagonal like the fifty pence coin.

If it‘s covered in snow or traffic dirt you still will be able to tell what the sign is by its shape, a Stop sign.

All warning signs are triangular. Advisory signs are rectangular. Round signs are ―the law‖ you must do what they say.

Don‘t ignore them, road signs are there for a reason they provide advanced information to help you avoid danger. You should be extra vigilant about some signs, like those warning signs of schools nearby, as they may indicate a 20mph speed limit ahead.

A pole with two or more signs on it should be read from the top down the top sign being the first hazard.

Also don‘t ignore farmer‘s signs eg: Mud on the road or PYOS, yes (pick your own strawberry‘s) you may find extra traffic movement and pedestrians around the entrance to the field.

The provision of new signs is a continuous process. As the volume and type of traffic on our roads change, ways of giving essential information to drivers and improving traffic flow and road safety have to be reviewed.

New signs and road markings are well and truly tested at certain locations to demonstrate their effectiveness before their wide-scale use is recommended. Special signals and road markings at pedestrian crossings and signs and markings to indicate min-roundabouts and bus lanes ect: it‘s an ongoing research program by the Highways Agency.

The Family Table Now all the festivities are over, our tables will not be so loaded down.

Like every other family, our Church family has to look to our yearly cost of living. We are all suffering from the increased costs. So my friends this months‘ ‗Table‘ will be our last entry in the Arrow.

Coming from Weymouth, Dorset, I and my sister were lucky enough for our Mother to take us every day to feed the swans in the backwater. So I suppose we could say this is my ‗Swan Song‘. I have enjoyed writing some of my memories for us to share. This is not goodbye because we at Sprotbrough Road Methodist Church at the Goldsmith Centre will still be meeting, and you are all welcome to come and join with us anytime. We meet for Worship each Sunday 10am to 12noon. We have a real good natter and some fun at the Tuesday Club 1.30pm to 3.45pm in the main hall of the Goldsmith Centre. Then every other Wednesday morning we meet for Coffee Cup Corner at 10.30am to 12noon in the little back room where we sit and chat, putting the world to rights. We want the family feeling of the community to grow, so we also have a monthly Sunday Fun Day for children, parents, friends and neighbours to share in our new way of being a Church. Please accept our invitation to the regular activities and watch for our handouts and leaflets.

My Table will still be what it‘s always been, a place where memories are made.

It‘s just like the Lord‘s Table on Sundays, where you can make memories for yourselves. Come one, come all!
