Welcome to the October issue of the Arrow, this issue celebrates the fifth anniversary of The Branton & Auckley Arrow, one of the very first community magazines in Doncaster.

The aim of the Arrow has always been to provide the immediate local community with news and information which is relevant to them and to help support local groups who provide services, activities and entertainment for others of all ages.

The Arrow has been well supported by the parish councils who use the magazine as a vehicle for their own messages and this month Cantley with Branton Parish council are asking for input/ideas for a new project to help engage with our young people. The parish council are planning for a basket ball area and/or goal wall to be provided within the village. They would be very interested to hear the views of young people to see if this is something of interest and any other ideas they may have. You can contact the Clerk, Julia Staniforth before 31st October, Julia‘s contact details are on page 9.

Commenting on the performance and cheque presentation, Principal Teacher, Christine Grace, said: ―The show was a huge success and I am very proud of my hard working and talented pupils. We had excellent audiences both nights, as you can tell by the amount of money raised.

Everyone had such praise for the high standard of performances from all our pupils. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all involved and to thank everyone for the great support. The NSPCC is a charity very close to mine and the pupil‘s hearts and we are very proud and delighted to present them with a cheque for £1,200.‖

Scott Stevenson Dance School danced their way to a £1,200 donation for the NSPCC

Claire Reading, NSPCC Community Fundraiser, said: ―I would like to thank the Scott Stevenson Dance School for all their hard work and dedication in making their Footloose performances such a success and raising this fantastic amount of money for the NSPCC. The children and young people are a great credit to Miss Stevenson, Miss Christine and the school, and this money will go towards helping vulnerable and abused children in South Yorkshire and the UK‖ Congratulations to you all!

The talented pupils at Scott Stevenson Dance School, in Blaxton and Doncaster, have raised £1,200 for the NSPCC. They performed the energetic and musical ‗Footloose‘ at the Doncaster Civic Theatre on the 11th and 12th June 2010 in aid of the NSPCC. The school had 63 students taking part in the production, with ages ranging from 2 ½ to 18 years.

They were also joined this year by the Rainbow Connection Singers.

Cantley with Branton WI The August meeting was a talk by Carol Macintosh from F.A.S.T. She explained to us, with the help of a short film, the importance of spotting the first signs of a stroke. On August 17th we spent a very enjoyable trip on the barge ―Ethel‖ from Thorne to Barnby Dun and back. We helped to steer the boat and operate the locks and we all enjoyed a fish and chip lunch on board. The September 9th meeting is arm chair exercises and on October 14th we have our annual harvest supper. Visitors are always welcome. Contact Anne Oakes 536802

The Tuesday Club.

The Tuesday Club is a club for all those 55years and over, men and women, which meets in Finningley Village Hall.

On the 28th of September we begin our 2010-2011 programme with a visit from a member of the Yorkshire Ambulance Services ―First Response Team‖ Want to know more about the team and its role? Come and join us.

We meet at 1.45p.m. In the village Hall for an afternoon that will be both informative and fun. Tea, Coffee, biscuits and of course a raffle as usual.

We look forward to seeing you all, whether you are a present or new member, you will be made very welcome.

St Oswald's Church in Finningley has had lead stolen from the North Aisle roof. Two full strips have gone, along with almost the entire ‗gutter‘ that runs behind the top of the wall. They also damaged most of the other pieces by beginning to lift them.

The incident occurred between 11pm on Wednesday 15th September and 8am on Thursday16th September, if anyone has any information please contact the police on 01302 385338 or 0114 2202020 as soon as possible. Temporary measures have been put in place to waterproof the roof for now.

Kilham Hall in Branton will soon celebrate its first anniversary of opening. It’s hard to believe it has been a year!!

The Management committee would like to invite everyone to help them celebrate at one of their weekly coffee morning which will be held on Tuesday 2nd November from 10am til 12noon. There will be refreshments available and a raffle as well as the usual you would expect from this increasingly popular event. The normal admission fee is waived on this occasion.

Detecting Speeding Vehicles Residents are advised that the Safer Neighbourhood Team will be operating the speed detection equipment in and around the parish in order to ensure the safety of motorists and pedestrians. Please observe speed limits and act responsibly on the roads.

Keeping Our Parish Clean – Animal Fouling on Pedestrian Walkways Dog fouling is still persistent in some areas particularly in the snickett between Whiphill Top Lane and Langton Gardens. A dog litter bin is located there and residents are asked to ensure that all dog litter is disposed of in the bin provided. Please note that it is an offence for dogs to foul any public areas including grass verges.

A number of residents have expressed concern over horses being ridden along footpaths and through alleyways and the amount of fouling created on these areas.

It is not permitted to ride horses on pavements or footpaths, owners and riders are therefore asked to act responsibly to ensure the heath and safety of the residents within the parish.

Provision of Young Adult Recreational Facilities The parish council are considering whether to provide further facilities for young people, possible provision could be a basketball pitch incorporating a ball wall or an independent ball wall. If you have any ideas or views on this proposal please forward these to the Clerk on tel. no. 01302 772493 or e-mail julia.staniforth@mypostoffice.co.uk as soon as possible and no later than 31 October 2010.

Auckley Parish Council Newsletter October 2010 Removal of Bus Shelter at Main Street, Auckley The Parish Council has received a number of complaints following the removal of the wooden bus shelter without notice from Main Street. There are concerns for the safety of the public, and Council is looking into this matter.

Proposed Improvement Scheme for Village Green Council has been approached by the Auckley All4All Group with a scheme to improve the appearance of the grassed area at Main Street in front of the Auckley Fish shop. Residents are invited to write to the Clerk with any suggestions. Clerk: Mrs. M. Caygill, 10 Ellers Lane, Auckley. Tel: 01302 770922 Request for 20 mph speed limits Council has campaigned for a number of years for the implementation of 20 mph speed limits on roads outside the various schools in Auckley Parish. Unfortunately we have again received a negative reply from the Mayor, but Council is steadfastly pursuing this issue. ‗Playbuilding‘ Scheme It was reported earlier in the year that Auckley would be receiving play equipment for the Riverside Park from a Government-funded ‗Playbuilding‘ Scheme. Unfortunately, due to budget cuts, this money has been withdrawn, and we are therefore looking at alternative options.

Auckley Show Council wishes to thank all the members of the Auckley Show Committee for providing an excellent Village Show on the 14th August. A tremendous amount of work goes into planning an event of this nature, and members are to be congratulated for their efforts.

GOODBYE MY FRIEND Remember the key stage one nativities!

The end of the summer term was as busy as ever at Hayfield Lane Primary School.

The key stage two children surpassed themselves once again by taking part in the end of term production called Goodbye My Friend. It was a musical which reflected the children`s life through school. The performance was fantastic and received rave reviews from parents.

News from Branton St Wilfrid’s C.E. Primary School School Building Work Over the Summer holiday our building team returned to school once again to complete the £2 000 000 rebuilding, remodelling and reroofing of the school. Our former flat roof over the school hall (which leaked!) has been replaced with a new pitched roof. Ceilings, lighting and heating have all been replaced and we now have a ventilation system to help keep the hall cool in hot weather. The hall and dining room have been painted and the two areas now look very smart. Our wonderful Parent Teacher Association have raised funds to buy the children a new climbing frame and an exciting range of gym equipment. Once everything has arrived we will share a photo of our new hall and P.E. equipment.

School Wild Life Area I think our caretaker must have spent a lot of the Summer holiday in our wild life area as it now looks wonderful! He has cut back a lot of the growth and cleared a tremendous amount of ivy that had spread right across the area. He has cleaned out the pond which is now very clear and full of fish (at least until the heron returns!) Our caretaker has planted lots of bulbs so that in Spring we will have bluebells, snowdrops, mini daffodils etc. Another area has been cleared and has been seeded with meadow grass and wild flower seeds. These improvements will greatly enhance children’s study of nature when they use our wild life area, so thank you very much to Mr Kearsley.

Jubilate Club at the Walsingham Youth Pilgrimage 2010 In August several of last year’s Jubilate group (our worship group) along with Jubilate members from previous years once again took part in the Walsingham Youth Pilgrimage which was led by Father Stephen Gallagher and Bishop Lindsay Urwin. The theme for the five days was ‘The Rosary’. There were 24 of us and we camped and cooked as a group amongst 800 other young people from all over the country.

A few weeks before we went, Father Stephen asked if we would write and perform a play for the opening night.

We did and everyone had a part and performed ‘live on stage’ and we were very proud of everyone. We also went to the ‘welcome disco’ on Monday night and on Tuesday night all 800 of us walked in the dark by candle light from the Catholic Shrine grounds to the Anglican Shrine grounds-this was very moving. Most of us walked barefoot as pilgrims have always done.

On Wednesday we took part in the all night Vigil and Rosary relay after we had shared in the late night Liturgy which again was incredibly moving, especially Anointing and Laying on of hands. Most of our group stayed in the Big Top Worship Marquee all through the night for this. We loved Wednesday afternoon and the craft activities, the climbing wall and the five-aside Football Tournament (well done our team-there are times England would be happy to lose only 1-0!) Thank you to Father Stephen, Bishop Lindsay and the Ministry team for all you said to us and for joining in everything!

Each year in August the older children from Jubilate take part in this five day residential event and the younger members of Jubilate take part in a similar event-the Children’s Pilgrimage-over a weekend in March. We get a lot out of this-we hope we gave something back.

Mrs Dilks would like to thank Mr Dilks, Anna Ferguson and Mr Elvin for yet again being indispensable at this event and Mrs Hewitt, who joined us this time-the hard work you all put in will not be forgotten! Doncaster Advanced Motorists Beyond the Test (Observation) Dear readers,

To pass the L-test you only have to read a car number plate at 20.5 meters (67 feet) To be a good driver you‘ll need much better vision than that. Most people‘s eyesight deteriorates very gradually, so they don‘t notice the effects, but research shows that millions of British drivers have poor eye-sight, and that can make them a danger to themselves, and you every time they drive.

Poor eyesight can affect reaction times and spatial awareness, while restricted vision may cause a driver not to see a hazard at all. Have an eye test every two years (or whenever you suspect there‘s been a deterioration in your vision) and always wear spectacles or contact lenses if an optician has recommended you wear them for driving.

To be an effective good driver you must try to absorb as much information as possible every time you drive. There are dozens of things going on at any given moment and you have to instantly process that information, focusing on those that are relevant and disregarding those that are not.

Of course, all drivers do this to a degree, but a good driver takes it to another level, constantly assessing driving conditions, reading the road a long distance ahead, and making decisions accordingly.

Forward Observation.

Almost all ordinary drivers only observe the road 5-20 meters in front of them, so, as well as missing most upcoming dangers altogether, at 60mph they have under a second to react if a hazard appears. Good drivers don‘t have this problem; they constantly scan the area closest to them, as well as the middle distance and all the way to the horizon.

One useful technique is to immediately scan the next section of road, as far as you can see ahead, every time you round a bend or reach the crest of a hill. This early-warning system has massive benefits: you can often see what direction the road is going to take, identify up-coming hazards, see traffic jams early or spot potentially dangerous drivers or vehicles.

Your eyes are capable of long distance vision at the same time as short distance. If you look far ahead, you can still be aware of what is happening close to you. But if you look at something very close to you, like the rear of the car, you will struggle to see ahead.

Tailgating is the nemesis of forward observation. It severely limits your vision, often to a dangerous level, and means that the lorry or van driver in front of you may not even know you are there.

The good drivers position their vehicle further back and slightly to the side, so that they can always see the line of traffic ahead of them, lifting their vision, but still being aware of the foreground to get early warning if the queue of traffic starts to brake.

Lifting your vision is one of the key advantages a good driver has over the ordinary driver.

Rear Observation.

Good drivers obtain much more information from their rear-view mirrors than the average driver.

They don‘t just observe what‘s immediately behind; they use their mirrors to calculate speed and distance over a longer range without, of course, neglecting what‘s going on in front of them. With practice important information can be absorbed in a moment. Always be aware of your blind spots if in any doubt, have a ‗lifesaver‘ glance over your shoulder.

The Travelling Pizza Late September, or early October, is the traditional time that Churches hold their harvest festivals. We‘re fortunate locally that we see the farmers around our villages on an almost daily basis. Perhaps ploughing the fields by Mosham Road, Auckley, or delivering potatoes straight from the ground to Higgins‘ in Finningley. However, farming, and the bringing in of the harvest, doesn‘t have the same impact on our villages that it once did. In years gone by a poor harvest meant a bad winter as there would be little produce to put by, and hunger was often a feature. Today if we‘re hungry, we just ring for a pizza!

How far will that pizza have travelled, a few miles perhaps from Hayfield Lane?

Well let‘s think for a moment about the ingredients.

Flour – from North America – 5,400 miles Tomatoes – from Italy – 1,000 miles Tuna – from Mauritius – 5,600 miles Pineapple – from Kenya – 4,500 miles Peppers – from Holland – 400 miles Mushroom – from UK – 200 miles Black Pepper – from India – 5,000 miles Mozzarella Cheese – from Italy – 1,000 miles So our Pizza from Auckley could potentially have travelled a combined distance of 23,000 miles. So it‘s amazing that it arrives hot!

It‘s easy to take for granted the convenience of today without remembering those who work the soil all over the world to provide for our needs, or appreciating the gift from God that our food is. So, I end with a modern slant on a well know harvest hymn from last year‘s Festival of the Plough at High Burnham.

We plough the fields with tractors, With drills we sow the land; But all the growth is still the gift, Of God‘s almighty hand.

We add the fertilisers To help the growing grain, But for its fruition, It needs God‘s sun and rain

All good gifts around us Are sent from heaven above then thank the Lord, O thank the Lord, for all His love.
