to the June issue of The Ackworth Arrow.

It feels so good to be back and we are very sorry we missed the May issue of the Arrow.

We felt it was the right thing to do to protect our delivery staff and readers when there were still many unknowns about Covid 19. We have given careful consideration to when would be the right time to produce a new issue and taken advice from public health, local government, Royal Mail and others within this sector.

I hope this issue of the Ackworth Arrow brings you happiness and joy. I asked for photos of your VE celebrations, Scarecrows and any lovely stories you wanted to share and you didn’t disappoint. Thank you!

I am sure you will have been moved by the generosity of our community, it’s spirit, good humour and positivity. At such a bleak time, there is so much to be thankful for. I am humbled by the commitment and motivation of our NHS staff who are working with this virus daily and carers who are living with it in their care homes. I sincerely hope we never forget their bravery. We have an article written by a Nurse to help give you an insight into their daily life at work. To the army of support that has kept us all going, our local shop keepers, I don’t know how we could manage without you and hope we continue to repay your hard work and effort in the future by shopping local. Our police, Fire Service, bus drivers, shop workers, teachers, Ward and Parish councillors and of course, everyone within the community who has volunteered their help and support to those in need and looked after their neighbours. There are many small businesses who may not survive and this is devastating for them and their families, but for the our community also. Please, shop local wherever you can. I have spoken with each advertiser in this month’s issue whose main priority is the safety of their customers and themselves. Social distancing is paramount to reducing transmission as well as regular handwashing. We all have a responsibility to beat this virus and this is the only way we can help until our scientists find a treatment or vaccine. So, until we are safe, this community will continue to do what it does best, support one another, look after our most vulnerable and be mindful of how we can reduce the chances of transmission.

Oliver’s Journey to Beat Neuroblastoma Oliver made good progress in May and he was feeling good. However, over the bank holiday weekend he took a little turn and required antibiotics and pain relief to treat a mild infection and mild symptoms of VOD (a nasty side effect of the high dose chemotherapy). Unfortunately, he was not able to come home for Alfie’s 3rd birthday, but the family will save the celebrations for when he does get home safe and well. Here he is having a much needed nap. even superhero’s need to sleep.

Oliver’s Father, James has self isolated in hospital with Oliver for over a month. Oliver’s intensive chemotherapy treatment has been planned for some time, but the family did not expect to have to manage the Covid 19 pandemic at the same time. This has been a very difficult time for Oliver and his family, Oliver understands the reasons why he is separated from him Mum and brother Alfie and they have stayed in touch via social media daily.

The Pandemic has hampered their fund raising efforts. Family, friends and the community of Ackworth are trying to raise £230,000 towards the cost of a trip to America for further treatment once his Chemotherapy is complete. The treatment in America, the Bivalent vaccine, can help to prevent the cancer from returning.

The amazing support of the Ackworth community has ensured the fundraising continues by coming up with as many ways as possible to raise funds, such as the scarecrow festival, trail, activity pack and sweety bags, challenge to walk, run, dance in June, selling crafts and cakes etc.

If you can do anything to help, please do so.

The fund is currently around £150,000 so still some way to go.

Ackworth Scarecrow Festival Raising funds for Oliver

At the last count we think we have over 120 Scarecrows, well done everyone who has taken part. They all need to be complete and on display by 30th May, judging will be on 7th June.

We are raising funds this year for a little boy in the village, Oliver Stephenson, to pay for treatment for Neuroblastoma at the moment the total raised from the scarecrows stands at £805 which is incredible.

We hope to make this an annual event. It’s amazing that so many people have taken part and it is lovely to walk around the village and spot all the brilliant scarecrows. Here are a few for you to look out for on you walk.

Challenging “Well that’s put a stop to that!”

No doubt many of you will have said something like that over the last few weeks.

Most, if not all of us will have had to change some plans that we have made. I had planned to complete many challenges over the year. And my wife had planned a 60th birthday celebration for me and the family. But the Covid19 crisis altered all of that.

After initially thinking that I could not perform any challenges, I sat back and thought about how to do them differently. And my wife came up with another challenge. On my birthday, everyone in our street came out to sing happy birthday. In fact we have done this on eight occasions during the lockdown period. But on my birthday, my wife challenged me to run around our cul de sac sixty times. I laughed. Then I thought about it. And then I measured the distance of a lap around the street. It was 0.27K. Much further than I had thought. So sixty laps would be around 16K. I had only run 5K in one go previously, and so thought this might be too much. My wife thought otherwise. One of our neighbours made a generous donation to my chosen charity, Cancer Research UK, followed by others. Which sealed the deal. I had to do it.

So I made plans to do the run, in small stages on one Saturday. Everyone in the street was alerted via facebook, and church members were alerted via our church WhatsApp group. So when I stepped out of the house to start running, almost everyone in the street were sat on the drives cheering and applauding, ringing handbells, blowing whistles, and banging drums. It was a fantastic spectacle without me running. But I had a challenge to complete.

On behalf of all those who need the support of Cancer Research UK. I ran twenty laps in one go, followed by a ten minute break. And then the rest in 10 lap sections.

The last ten laps were definitely the hardest.

Where cramp was beginning to develop, and my legs felt tired and weak. But after just over three hours, with 2 hours and 12 minutes running time, I completed the challenge, running 16.37K (10.31 miles). Tired doesn’t even come close to how I felt. As my son said “Not bad for an old man”!

At the time of writing, this challenge has raised over £800. An amount I could not have contemplated. So a massive thank you to everyone who has donated generously to my chosen charity.

Lockdown has not deflated our capacity for compassion, nor our community spirit. During lockdown these things have been strengthened.

What’s next someone asked!! After a few days rest, I realised that I have so far run 40K in May. So another four 5K runs will see me complete another challenge. Running 60K in a month.

Lockdown may have put a stop to many things, but not our spirit to carry on! And my hopes and prayers for our village community, is that we will all continue to carry on, despite what we have to face.

Ackworth Community Response In the last edition of the Ackworth Arrow was an article about the response to the Covid-19 crisis within our community. Here is an up date on what has happened since.

A week before we were all told to stay at home, Ackworth Parish Council and Churches Together, ably assisted by Ackworth School, and supported by This is Ackworth, came together to produce a scheme aimed at helping those who might have to isolate themselves due to illness, or, as it turned out, shield themselves.

Within days, this scheme was up and running and we received our first request for help within four days.

Anyone who is isolated at home and has no one to help them with supplies or prescriptions, or just needs a friendly chat can ring reception at Ackworth School (01977 233600) between 8:30am and 4:30pm with their request. This request is then passed to a coordinator, who then contacts one of the volunteers, who carries out the request.

We currently have over one hundred volunteers willing to help with this scheme, who have responded to over 130 requests for help over the last eight weeks.

Together with the Community Church we have also developed a small collection of supplies which we can use in an emergency.

This is a fantastic example of how our community and it’s organisations can come together to work for the benefit of our community. A very positive sign. And I hope something we can carry into the future.

Covid-19

A day in the life of a nurse in Doncaster A day in the life of a nurse? No two days or nights are the same and therefore it is difficult to say what a typical day or night would be. As a nurse we have tasks that are part of our typical shift but every shift has the potential to be exhilarating, exhausting, momentous and heart-warming (to name just a few).

I have been nursing for over 20 years and can honestly say it is a vocation, and that I have loved every role I have had the privilege to do. Not one day have I wished I did something else, as each day is different and I am always developing and learning something new. There have been ups and downs on my journey, but all have made me the nurse I am today.

At the beginning of 2020, we were planning events to celebrate ‘International Year of the Nurse’. At no point did we expect to be in the midst of a global pandemic, Covid-19. My colleagues and I have been challenged by these unprecedented times, doing new roles, working in new ways and coping with being redeployed to new teams and departments.

I have been redeployed to a ward caring for Covid-19 positive patients. I am proud to be a nurse and able to care for patients when they are at their most vulnerable and sickest, but also support and reassure when they are frightened of this unknown (new) virus. As a nurse I reassure patients, but I am also a parent, so have my own worries and anxieties about what we are going through locally, nationally and internationally. I push these anxieties to the back of my mind to ensure I can focus on giving the best care to my patients.

On arrival to the ward for my shift, it is time to don (put on) the personal protective equipment (PPE). The PPE consists of a gown over your scrubs, a hat, a mask, goggles and gloves. The PPE is vital to prevent cross-contamination, but difficult to wear. You have breaks, but wearing the PPE for a 12.5 hour shift is not easy as it is hot, uncomfortable and drying (you are not able to drink until all PPE is removed and hands washed

they cannot see nursing staff’s faces. They can’t see that reassuring smile behind the mask, and everyone looks the same. No-one is identifiable in the PPE. Once on the ward, the shift starts with handover (from the previous shift) before commencement of nursing tasks. These tasks include assisting with patient hygiene needs, medication rounds, doctor ward rounds, and checking patients vital signs (again, just to name a few). All the time we are monitoring patients to assess for any improvement or deterioration in condition and act on the assessments. An important role is to offer reassurance to patients to relieve their fears and anxieties, and also speaking with family members on the telephone to update and reassure them, with the current visiting restrictions in place due to Covid-19.

I am the nurse I am because of the colleagues I have had the privilege to work with, but also because of the patients I have had the privilege to care for. The Covid-19 pandemic was not predicted, and is tough, but all members of the NHS have stepped up and we will beat this virus together!
