Welcome to the September
issue of The Ackworth Arrow.
I hope everyone had a lovely Summer break, whether you stayed at home or travelled away. We have certainly matched the Mediterranean in terms of sunshine so I am sure our local beauty spots have seen an upturn in visitors over the last few months. The Ackworth Pram Race is Sunday 26th August. well done to the organisers and good luck to everyone taking part. I hope to have lots of photographs from the event and will publish my favourite on the front cover of the October issue. Please email your memories and photos from the day. As we go to print I am eagerly awaiting my Son’s GCSE results. Good luck to everyone else, I hope you get what you need. Well done to everyone who passed their A ‘levels last week. St Cuthbert’s & All Saints Dear Friends It’s that time of year again when we all start to prepare ourselves to go into ‘Back to School mode’. ‘Back to School’ seems to be everywhere during the summer break; on TV, in shop windows, and mostly in our homes. A number of things spring to mind; re-establishing a regular sleep routine, shopping for school uniforms and supplies, looking at the new school year information, timetables and checklists, and then attempting to unplug the children from anything electrical to prepare them for the unexpected! I’m sure you will agree, that our children in this parish are blessed to have wonderful local schools to return to in September, each school different, diverse and exciting. Before the summer break, we said farewell to our year six children now preparing to make the transition from junior to senior/high school. This process can be a really exciting but stressful time, our children may have lots of questions going round and round in their heads, like, ‘will anyone like me’ ‘what will the lessons be like’ and the favourite in my house, ‘will I get lots of homework’. My message is be strong in who you are, try not to worry you’re not on your own. As your parish priest, I share with the Bishop in the pastoral care of the people of Ackworth, otherwise known as the ‘cure of souls’, and each school and young person is as much a part of the ‘cure of souls’ as any other group of people who work, or live, within the parish boundaries. Therefore I offer you my prayers and blessings as you all make preparations to return to school. I myself look forward to returning to our local schools in September and I continue to pray for the head teachers, staff and volunteers of our schools in Ackworth. I pray for all those involved with education and caring for our children; for parents and carers in the midst of sleepless nights and chaotic mornings. I especially pray for our children returning to school, as I said, you’re not on your own and I’d like to leave you with a few verses from Psalm 139. Lord, you have looked deep into my heart, and you know all about me. You know when I sit down and when I get up. You know my thoughts before I think them. You notice everything I do and everywhere I go. Before I even say a word, you already know what I am going to say, and with your powerful arm you protect me on every side. I’m praying for you all on your return ‘back to school’ Reverend Charlene

Family History Society This year’s Heritage Open Days will run from Thursday 6th to Sunday 9th and from 13th to 16th September.
