Welcome to the September issue of the Ackworth Arrow I hope the Pram Race went well and the weather forecast kept its promise! 1st Ackworth Scout Group looks like they had an amazing time in the holidays on their visit to Bramhall Park, if your child is interested in joining the scout organisation, you will find details on how to in this month’s Arrow.

CG Dance Academy are starting dance classes at the Parish Rooms, they specialise in all sorts of dance from Ballroom, Ballet to street and cheer! Classes start on 9th September, please see page7 for details.

If you are planning a wedding soon, Ackworth Grange is hosting A Marquee Wedding Open Day on Sunday 10th September, organised by ‘Made it at last’ They will have two Marquees on show with many suppliers available to help you make the most important decisions for your day.

It is a sad fact of life that some criminals will impersonate others to carry out despicable crimes, preying on vulnerable people throughout the community.

Unfortunately this type of crime does occur with callers varying in appearance and using a number of excuses to try and trick their way into people’s homes. The aim of the doorstep criminal is to try and talk their way into your home; after all if they can walk through your front door after receiving an invite from you, why should they go to all the trouble of having to break into your property?

Knock at the door? Ask yourself…

• Are you expec ng anyone?

• Does the caller have ID? • Does their ID check out using the number from your bill or phonebook?

Ackworth 74 Club Summer Outing On Tuesday July 1th 37 Members and friends of Ackworth 74 Club set off on their Annual Summer Outing which this year took them to Ripon and then on to Newby Hall and Gardens.

Unfortunately the weather on the day was dreadful with rain throughout the whole day. However, this did nothing to dampen the spirits and everyone went on to spend a very interesting and enjoyable day. Sadly it was impossible to appreciate the full splendour of the glorious gardens at Newby but the group had a very interesting and informative tour of the house, which is still a family home. Members then went on to the nationally famous Dolls House Exhibition to marvel at the intricacy of the displays and miniature room settings. Then time spent in the Bear House with it’s wonderful collection of Teddy bears, many once owned by famous people and donated to the Museum, provided further enjoyment and mush speculation at to whom some of the Bears were meant to resemble.

So together with time in the Cafe for lunch and afternoon tea Members were able to find plenty to do to keep out of the rain.

Later in the afternoon on arrival back into Ackworth some Members went on to complete the day with a meal out together at the Ego. All in all what might have been a very disappointing day turned out to be successful with members and friends enjoying spending time together.

1st Ackworth Scout Group

Recently a group of Beavers, Cubs and Scouts, all members of 1st Ackworth Scout Group enjoyed an exciting and memorable weekend county Camp called, 'Challenge 17', which was held at Bramham Park.

It was a weekend of glorious weather, just right for camping. Friday night was 'Carnival night', and a sea of fancy dress and colourful outfits were to be seen on the camping grounds and activity fields. Little sleep was had by the excited participants as they were up bright and very early next morning.

After a hearty breakfast and flag break all the activities were open. If giant inflatables and bouncy castles delight you, then this was paradise as there was every conceivable type you could imagine - giant Hoop la over animal heads, basketball, giant slides, an inflatable climbing wall, and a very popular one where you launched yourself from the top into open space to land about 30feet below onto a giant cushioned area.

Adrenaline fuelled activities included zip wires, a cave bus, mountain boarding, grass sledging and climbing, both up trees and on climbing and bouldering walls. You could try your skill on a Bucking Bronco or try crate stacking.

As it was so hot water based activities proved very popular - giant water slides zooming downhill on air beds, water mazes and kayaks and canoes helped you cool down.

Activities requiring a little more patience and skill included Laser Quest, shooting and archery. If you're a fan of Sumo wrestling you could even have a go at that by donning inflatable Sumo suits and battling it out. There was even a mountain biking course set out on the Bramham Park Estate where you could safely enjoy more challenging cycling than you could get at home. A free funfair was in situ all weekend and queues for the helter skelter, dodgems and flying chairs never seemed to grow any less.

Of course there are always those who prefer quieter and more creative skills and thankfully Scouting caters for all tastes. Traditional Scouting skills such as pioneering, knotting, bridge building and branding were on offer, as well as tents full of different creative crafts such as kite making, origami , card making etc. You could even enjoy games with Space hoppers and a giant 'Hungry Hippo' which proved hilarious fun. Another different activity was to try to build a full sized igloo using plastic milk cartons, though it did seem to collapse at regular intervals!

A tent featuring talks and displays about the History of Scouting, and some famous Scouts who went on to serve their country in times of war, Jack Cornwell in particular, added a more educational touch to the week end's activities, as was the visit from the Owl sanctuary. There were many more activities far too numerous to list here.

Children seem to be renowned for always being hungry, no need for that when free drinks and food were available all day, favourites such as pancakes, waffles, donuts and trail mix (where you could make your own versions) Saturday night was campfire songs and film night, ending with a spectacular firework display. Over 2,000 were in Camp but in such a vast area it didn't seem at all crowded. Sunday saw a repeat of the hundreds of activities on offer from the previous day, and Camp ended with flag down and the breaking up of Camp mid afternoon.

If you think your child would like to be involved in the fun and adventure that is Scouting, then 1st Ackworth Scout Group would welcome you to its Beavers for 6 - 8 year olds, Cubs 8 - 11years, Scouts 11 - 14years when we return after the Summer break in September.

St Cuthbert’s & All Saints Business as usual The Rector of St Cuthbert’s & All Saints’may have packed his bags, and ridden westward into the sunset, but that does not mean that church activities will stop!

All of our church services will continue. We will continue to book, and conduct, baptisms, wedding, and funerals. Our Youth groups will continue to meet. Our study groups will continue to grow. Our social calendar and church sales will continue. We will continue our programme of repairs to both churches. Our ministry to our primary schools will continue and develop. We hope and pray that in every aspect we will continue to develop and to grow as a church, during the interregnum, until a new priest is appointed. In essence, it is business as usual.

The process of appointing a new priest may take some time, but the PCC have met with the Archdeacon, and we have already begun the process of writing the necessary documents, and have appointed those who will be responsible for selecting the right person for our church.

All of this is going to happen with the drive and the support of everyone within our congregations, and beyond. All those who are willing to join these activities, and times of worship, and willing to play a part, however large or small. Everyone has a part to play.

St Paul in his letter to the Romans says “Though we are many, we are one body” Rom 12:5, in his first letter to the Corinthians he says “All of you are Christ’s body, and each one is a part of it.” 1 Cor 12:27. And so it is in the church here in Ackworth, and as he goes on to say, we all have different gifts which should be used to build up the church. But the unifying agent is the Holy Spirit, because “there are different gifts, but it is the same Spirit who gives them” 1 Cor 12:4.

Whatever gift or talents we have, we use them in God’s service, to build his church, and his kingdom in this place. With The Rector’s retirement, we may have lost a significant member of the team, but we still have a strong team. We have a team which is able to work together, to grow together, to develop together, to join in God’s mission in the world.

The church is still open, it’s members are still working, we will continue to be visibly active within the Parish, and everyone is welcome to join us in worship and service. It is business as usual!
