Editor’s letter...

Welcome to the October issue of the Ackworth Arrow… I hope everyone has well and truly settled back in to routine after the holidays. Fred would like to thank everyone who contacted him regarding his tree article last month.

Another resident has e mailed an update for this month’s issue.

The annual Ackworth Pram race proved once again to be a fantastic success, this month, we have photographs for you to enjoy and notice of the presentation evening which will be held on 8th October.

Colin Tanswell from The Ackworth Road Running Club has an update on their successes over the last month.

COMMUNITY NEWS The Ackworth 74 Club

Ackworth 74 Club ladies enjoyed a very convivial social evening at their September Meeting on Tuesday September 13th.

President Moira Spears welcomed members back after the Club's August break and Secretary Sue Smith-Wilkins outlined the Club's forthcoming Autumn events. 32 members attended including 2 new members.

The Social Evening began with a Pea and Pie Supper and was followed by a Quiz with an animal theme.

A team led by Judith Gardner won the quiz and the raffle was won by Linda Parsons. There was a very well supported Bring and Buy Sale with everything sold for just a £1 and many members went home with a real bargain and the money raised went towards Club funds.

Another very busy month, on 2nd long time member Terry Sinar ran a decade personal best 5k in the Yeovil Montacute Park Run, on 3rd the Flat Cap 5 miles, Martin Stearn won the first prize in his age category (M65), Simon Newton was overall 5th, on the 6th David Cooper ran in the Porirua Park Run in New Zealand. On 6/7th ten members ran in the Dublin 5k & Half Marathons, on 7th Ultra-Runner Simon Bennett completed the South Downs Way 103 mile race, which included 9000 feet of climbing!

Thirty members ran in the York Millennium Bridge 5k’s, a number setting personal best times; including Richard Ritucci 18’27 & Rebecca Winter 18’36”.

Julie Stafford was first in her age category (F45) and Martyn Stearn (M65). On 14th Gail Tombs set a club age record (F60) in the West Yorkshire ‘5’ to add to a number she already holds. In the Askern 10 miles also on 14th 29 members ran, first home in this very competitive race was Simon Newton 58’53” with Rebecca Winter second 67’17”. On 21st Liane Warren was first in her age category and 4th lady overall in the tough Northumberland Coast Marathon in 4 hours 32’ On 22nd 28 entered the Escrick 10k with Terry Sinar & Martyn Stearn setting year best times.

Finally, more representation abroad as four lady members, including two committee, ran in the Paris Bois de Boulogne Park Run on 27th

COMMUNITY NEWS Save Our Trees

The Ackworth Pram Race

I was interested to read in the Ackworth Arrow the concern of some residents towards the felling of trees in the village.

Final Fund Raising Event

Firstly no specific number of trees felled was given over a specific period and the reason identified for the felling of the trees. Many trees in the village are subjected to a Tree Preservation Order and therefore planning permission has to be sought from the City of Wakefield Council, before they can be felled. Trees have a limited life span depending on which species; secondly they can suffer from many pests and diseases’ making them unsafe in terms of people and property.

There are many trees near properties that are suffering from the diseases and pests identified on these web sites. Large mature trees near properties can also cause severe costly damage with their roots, to building foundations, drains, utility services, drives and footpaths which is evident on estates.

In order to sustain the number of trees felled due to some of the causes mentioned, perhaps people who are interested in preserving the number of trees in the village should consider planting a forest tree in their garden, if they have none at the present.

Harvest October will see our church celebrate the Harvest Festival. Traditionally this was a time to celebrate the abundance of fruit and grain grown from the land, together with celebrating the gifts from God. This was an obvious thing to do in an agricultural world, particularly one that existed in England in the 1700’s.

However, with the industrial revolution, and the migration of land workers to the cities, more emphasis was placed on industry and less on agriculture. I wonder what happened to people’s view of the harvest then. I wonder also what people think when we celebrate Harvest Festivals now, when there is a disconnection between people and the land.

Most people will buy their fruit and vegetables from a supermarket or a grocer, and some people will not even think about where they came from. I was astounded recently to hear that children visiting a farm did not know where milk came from, other than a carton from the supermarket. But they were fascinated to see a cow being milked, not to mention having a go themselves!

So is harvest a quaint festival celebrated by churches full of people with little idea about what it means or where it came from. The hymns we sing on these occasions can seem to paint an idyllic picture that could come straight from a Thomas Hardy novel. This is to view harvest through a very narrow window.

When I think of growing and fruitfulness and harvest, I will often think of people, as much as fruit and vegetables. We are all growing in one way or another. Some younger people and children are growing physically. Some young adults are growing in personality and character. And some older people are growing in wisdom. But we are all growing in spirituality. And spirituality here is in its widest sense, not its narrower religious sense. Part of this growing and maturing, is growing in connectedness, or relationship.

As we grow, we develop relationships with other people. We also develop relationships with things around us, and sometimes that means the places where we are, or have visited, and even the land that we live in or on. For many people there will be a growing sense of something other, than what we see in front of us. Emotions will play a greater part in our lives, and we will feel those emotions. But we are also likely to feel that there is a bigger picture to our lives. Working out that bigger picture is where our spirituality comes in.

Harvest is a time when we can begin to explore for ourselves what that bigger picture is all about. Come and join us at this time, and begin to explore what this means for you.

The Ackworth Pram Race

Now one of the most popular Annual Events in Ackworth’s Calendar!

On Bank Holiday Sunday August 28th the 2nd Ackworth Pram Race of the modern era started, once again, from the Carr Bridge Playing Fields There were sadly fewer teams this year and at first it seemed fewer supporters too, perhaps put off by the awful weather forecast. However, as the start time drew near, more and more spectators made their way on to the field in time to hear a speech from Alan Martin, Race Organiser, as he introduced Kevin Nicholls, who as a child was one of the original orphaned children, the very first ever Ackworth Pram Race was organised to help and support back in the 1970’s.

Nine teams lined up for the start, including teams from The Coop and Vengabus from Fairways Garage together with private entrants, with as wide and varied a collection of “Prams” that anyone might wish to see. The costumes of the competitors were all very varied and demonstrated the amount of time, thought and effort gone into their design and making.

The Race got off to a great start but before even leaving the field two “prams” crashed and one was overturned. However, nothing daunted they were soon up and off again.

The route took the Competitors around the village along a very muddy Dando Way and also visited five Inns en route with the Competitors drinking a drop of their chosen tipple at each one. More and more spectators lined the route and cheered on the Pushers and “Babies”.

Finally, after their last drink at the Boot and Shoe the teams did a lap of the cricket field to the finishing line. By now the crowd on the Cricket field, joined by the Race followers ensured the finalists got a great reception.

The Race was won this year

by The Working “Girls” a team in Drag and The Mortar Warriors, last year’s winners, came second with The Great Escape, a team of prison officers coming third.

However, the real “winners” will be The Prince of Wales Hospice in Pontefract for, despite fewer teams and initially less support, in the end the amount of money raised by the end of the day was a fantastic £5240 exceeding the amount raised last year! With another collecting box still to be opened and another event planned on October 8th at the Masons Arms the Grand Total is yet to be announced!

The Children’s Races, later in the day, were a new addition this year and proved very successful with 30/40 entrants in various age groups.

All in all the Pram Race has again proved hugely successful and the Organisers are to be congratulated! However, the Organisers wish to thank all their Sponsors (a full list available on web site) but especially Avant Homes who started the fundraising off with a very healthy donation & Fairways Service Station who raised approx £700. Indeed, thanks go out to everyone who made the event such a success, competitors, spectator, supporters and most especially “Well Done” to Alan Martin and his fellow organisers!
