Welcome to the November
issue of The Ackworth Arrow.
What a fabulous 2018 we have had with regards to the weather! It’s late October and I am looking out of my window at a beautiful blue sky and a sunny, warm morning. Climate change or just chance… who knows? I am hoping it’s just chance, it has been a treat unlikely to be repeated for some time. Last month I asked for information on local 24 hour defibrillators. If you are aware of any please let me know so I can keep a permanent feature in the Arrow on the whereabouts. The deadline for the December issue of the Ackworth Arrow is Wednesday 14th November. The December issue will be delivered the last weekend in November.
Best Wishes Michelle Sidebottom Tel: 01302 534256 / 07795 387937 email: michelle@arrowpublications.co.uk www.arrowpublications.co.uk
Remembrance Sunday 11th November 2018 There will be a service on Sunday 11th November at Ackworth Memorial in remembrance of all who have fallen at 10.45am. There will also be a church service at St Cuthbert’s at 5.30pm. Everyone is welcome to attend.
Dog training – rain or shine! Thanks to a generous grant from Support Adoption For Pets, the local RSPCA Animal Centre can offer dog training and behavioural support all year round in all weathers. The new canopy completes a big investment in training facilities at the South Yorkshire Animal Centre, Bawtry. Over the summer, the Doncaster, Rotherham and District RSPCA Branch held a very successful six-week training programme open to the public. Now sessions can be held rain or shine. Support Adoption For Pets – a charity established by Pets at Home – has been very supportive of the work of the RSPCA Centre to rehabilitate dogs rescued from cruelty or neglect. Laura Messenger, Grant Funding Coordinator at Support Adoption For Pets, said: “It is a real privilege to help an organisation that works so hard to care for and re-home pets in need. They are doing a superb job, and the effort the Rescue Centre puts in is an inspiration.” There are many ways to help the Animal Centre’s mission to rehome and rehabilitate animals. You can volunteer, donate cash or goods, sponsor an animal pen through Safe Haven and support events. There are charity shops at Bawtry, Rotherham, Rossington and Thorne and now an eBay shop. The Animal Centre has a pet shop on site for all your requirements, and provides a pet cremation service and a memorial garden for your beloved pets. – find out more at www.rspcadoncasterrotherham.org.uk

Drivers who don't cut their engines when waiting aren't just wasting fuel: they're breaking the law and risk being fined
An idling engine can produce up to twice the emissions of a car that’s in motion. These include chemicals such as sulphur dioxide, particulate matter and nitrogen oxide to name a few. All of these contribute to asthma, heart disease and even lung cancer, according to Transport for London. These chemicals also have a negative effect on the environment by contributing to poor air quality. With this in mind, the government introduced
laws to discourage drivers from idling. Now, leaving your engine on while parked on the road or in a public place could land you with fine of £20. The aim of the fine is to encourage drivers to reduce their emissions by turning off their engines if they’re parked up in a public space. Leaving an engine idling is an offence Stationary idling is an offence under section 42 of the Road Traffic Act 1988. The Act enforces rule 123 of the Highway Code, which states: "You must not leave a vehicle’s engine running unnecessarily while that vehicle is stationary on a public road." Doing this can incur a £20 fixed-penalty fine under the Road Traffic (Vehicle Emissions) Regulations 2002. This goes up to £40 if unpaid within a given time frame. But this is only imposed if the driver fails to turn off their engine when asked to do so by a marshal. Of course, it doesn't mean you've got to cut your engine at every red light. You’re allowed to leave your engine running if you're stationary in traffic, diagnosing faults or defrosting your windshield.

Ackthorpe what Ackworth Station May have been. Ackthorpe is the Southampton Model Railway Society’s latest OO gauge layout. The layout is based on the Swinton and Knottingley line in West Yorkshire, which was originally built jointly by the Midland Railway and the North Eastern Railway to provide a more direct route from Sheffield to York and in the past was a very busy line. Buildings have been taken from existing buildings along the line. One of its attractions for modelling is the great variety of LMS, LNER and BR Standard locomotive classes that could be seen. The layout is inspired by two of the stations on the line, Moorthorpe and Ackworth, hence the name “Ackthorpe”. The period modelled is the mid to late 1950s, just prior to the great decline in freight traffic and rationalisation of passenger services. At this time there were still a number of pregrouping locomotives at work in the area, whilst at the same time, diesel multiple units were appearing on local services and the occasional early diesel locomotive might be seen. The model includes colliery exchange sidings and coal-loading screens, not based on anywhere in particular, but inspired by the presence of Frickley Colliery sidings just to the south of Moorthorpe station. These sidings bustle with activity as small National Coal Board tank engines shunt wagons between the exchange sidings and the screens for loading prior to marshalling for despatch to the main railway network. Residents of Ackworth will be interested to see how the station may have developed if coal had been mined in the area. This layout is one of 18 layouts drawn from across the country representing some of the best examples of Model Railway modelling. There will be opportunity to see at first hand the layout that team Wakefield built as part of the Great Model Railway Challenge Channel 5 Friday 2nd Nov 8pm and chance to meet one of the judges Steve Flint from PECO. St Cuthbert’s & All Saints We Remember Over 5,000 men of God left their pulpits and parishes to serve alongside the soldiers of World War 1. These men (padres) were totally unprepared for what they were going to see and experience. They’d gone from weekly services and parish duties to some risking their lives on the front line. Their orders on the battlefields were to continue with services, perform burials and provide spiritual guidance to the men. Padres threw themselves into the pastoral care of the soldiers, hoping to lift the morale of those in the trenches, they helped our soldiers to write home and to read letters from loved ones. They often put themselves in great danger whilst administering the last rites to men wounded on the battlefield. The padres comforted men injured in field hospitals. Our padres did not carry weapons even in the most dangerous places. They were men of peace. One padre who was very popular with the soldiers was Woodbine Wille who would hand out cigarettes after services. Another padre David Railton came up with the idea for the tomb of the Unknown Soldier, to represent the many thousands of men who had died without no known grave. This year marks the centenary of the end of the 1914-1918 conflict, we have over 80 names of men on our war memorial who did not return home safe here to Ackworth to their waiting families. Mothers, sisters, sweethearts prayed for their loved ones to be returned home safe, as our men marched home, most choked back tears. We remember their sacrifice, we remember those who comforted them in their darkest hour, we remember those who’s soul’s cried out in pain at the news their loved one’s wouldn’t return. Through their mutual love and faith, whether on the frontline or in the parish church here in Ackworth they were reunited.
I would like to finish with a well-known poem from the Wicket Gate by Studdert Kennedy (Woodbine Wille). ‘A Mother Understands’ Dear Lord, I hold my hand to take Thy Body, broken here for me. Accept the Sacrifice I make, My body, broken, there, for Thee. His was my body, born of me, born of my bi er travail pain, And it lies broken on the field, swept by the wind and rain. Surely a Mother understands Thy thorn-crowned head, the mystery of Thy pierced hands – the Broken Bread. Revd Charlene
