Your Community News All sections have been busy lately having fun and achieving Scouting goals. The Beavers, took part in a sunflower growing competition. This was part of their My World Challenge Badge, where they were required to grow something from seed. The winner was Samuel Moore, his sunflower grew to over eight feet. The Beavers have also been working towards their Communicator Activity Badge. They had to learn how to make a phone call, learn their own telephone number, how to send an email and text message, and learn how to spell their name in either Morse Code, semaphore, the phonetic alphabet or by using pictures and symbols. The Cub Scouts have been busy joining the Keep Ackworth Free of Litter Group. The day the Cubs helped was one of the wettest days you could imagine yet nobody complained. They cleared Dando Way. Several bags of litter were collected. The worst place was round the shelter in the car park at Bell Lane. Although there are litter bins provided, it would seem the young people using the shelter ignore them! Very unsightly, and there is no need for this. The Cubs are working towards their Environmental Conservation Activity Badge. They have to know all about re-cycling rubbish, and where to take items that cannot be recycled. They found out how to reduce the energy and water they use at home, and to found out about different types of renewable energy, and what their advantages and disadvantages are. They then made bird feeders and planted bulbs. The Scout section enjoyed a weekend camp at Squirrel Wood Scout Campsite near Burghwallis. They had to erect tents and dining areas and plan and cook all their own meals. The weather was warm and sunny on the Saturday, and the Scouts participated in many different activities such as pioneering, using a map and compass on a trail, archery and shooting, bouldering, the correct use of hand axes and knives, and how to use a felling axe. There were Five a Side football competitions, fitness trails, and of course a traditional Scout Campfire to round off a very busy day. Unfortunately the weather was wet on Sunday, so they travelled home with wet tents. Fortunately they are now dry and awaiting the next camp.

Keeping Ackworth clean and tidy! The washout weekend didn’t dampen the support of over 60 volunteers at the two litter picks. New friends made young and old and the village looks better for the effort. The group is approaching over 1000 volunteering hours since created by residents from across the village. The support from the team at the Parish Council and StreetScene is very much appreciated. All the schools in the village met this week and the children have chosen to support litter picks over the next 12 months and to try and raise awareness about avoiding litter in the first place - we can but hope for a litter free village. The next Community Litter Picks are Saturday 2nd November, meeting in Ackworth School car park at 9am & return for refreshments at 11am. On Sunday 3rd November meeting at Ackworth Parish Council on Bell Lane at 10am until 12pm. For further information please contact – Adam on 07740236512 or via facebook@AckworthSpringClean

Ackworth Road Runners #ARRrunwalktalk doing our bit for mental health

On Tuesday 24th September over 40 of our members took part in #RunAndTalk – a programme created by England Athletics, with the support of the mental health charity Mind. The aim of the campaign is to improve mental wellbeing through running, whilst breaking down the stigma associated with mental health by getting people talking. The reasons our members decided to take up running vary greatly, but the one thing the majority feel as a result of running is the benefits to their mental health through regularly meeting up with friends old and new to exercise in a safe and welcoming environment. With the NHS now reporting that 1 in 4 of us experience mental health problems each year, we want to reach out to the wider community and encourage more of you to come along and reap the benefits of exercise and a good old natter, especially now the nights are drawing in and its harder to motivate yourself to get up and out of the door. That’s why we’re launching our own campaign: #ARRrunwalktalk On the last Tuesday of every month at 6.15pm, we will be opening our doors for non-members to come and join us at Ackworth Cricket Club to run/walk and have a chat, followed by a drink in the clubhouse afterwards. If you don’t feel like doing the running/walking bit, or want to see what we’re about, pop down after the session at around 7.30pm and simply join us for a chat and a drink. Details for each session will be posted on our website and also as a Facebook event. The first of these events will be Tuesday 29th October, and the run will be followed by our club ballot for our allocated London Marathon places. Forthcoming dates will be: 26th November, 17th December (early due to Christmas Eve & NYE), 28th January. All sessions are free to attend and there’s no obligation to join the club (although you may decide you like us and want to). New members are always welcome. If you are interested in joining our fun and friendly club, more information can be found at www.ackworthroadrunners.co.uk or on Facebook: AckworthRoadRunners. We train on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6.30pm, from Ackworth Cricket Club. Thanks for reading, hope to see some of you there soon. Ruth Walker Ladies Captain, Ackworth Road Runners
