Welcome to the November issue of the Ackworth Arrow Well done to the organisers of Ackworth Pram Race who raised a further ÂŁ500 at the presentation evening at the end of September. An amazing ÂŁ7000 was donated to the Prince of Wales Hospice which is based in Pontefract and serves the surrounding towns. I must admit, I really enjoy reading the locals comments and posts on Ackworth live it and love it village facebook page, especially some of the photography, if you would like to share your photos in the Ackworth Arrow, please email them to me below. COMMUNITY NEWS
Pram Race Presentation Night On Saturday Sept. 29th at The Masons Arms on bell Lane the Organisers of the Ackworth Pram Race held their final fund raising event of the 2017 season, when a cheque for £6,500 was presented to Rob Danna , representing the Prince of Wales Hospice . This event, in itself, proved to be another great success. Thanks must go to Maxine and Tony Kendrick ( Masons Arms licensees) who provided superb food for the night. Music was provided by a fantastic band “Harkins Bike”. The Masons was packed and everyone had a great time! The Grand Raffle and Auction were so successful that a further £500 was raised. So bringing the 2017 Grand Total of money raised to a fantastic £7.000 WOW! Many, Many Thanks and Congratulations go to the organisers and to everyone who helped and supported!

St Cuthbert’s & All Saints Science & Knowledge
In my very first science lesson at High School, I had to copy some words into my book; Science = Knowledge Now, by this, my science teacher was telling me that the word science, from the Latin scientia, means knowledge. This initial lesson, and the first words I wrote in my science book, have remained with me for decades, and indeed formed much of my career. I grew up with an intense interest in all things scientific, with a leaning towards all things biological, which eventually settled into human biology. My thirst, and my quest for knowledge knew no bounds, and as an adult I learnt how to ask scientific questions, how to form a theory, and how to test those theories. I then learnt how to apply what was learnt from these tasks, which then informed my work. I was fascinated by nature, and I wanted to know as much about it as possible, and science was the route by which I did it. All this, of course, is a vital part of our lives. Modern day medicine would not be where it is today without the experiments, and research that have been conducted over several centuries. The constant search for more knowledge will advance the world of the future into places we cannot even imagine today. I continue to applaud those scientists that have gone before, and will applaud the scientists of the future. However, through my adult life, another question kept popping into my mind. An all together different question. A question which I could not test by applying scientific method. That question? Why? In my search for the what and how of nature, I had left the why behind. And then like any other inquiry, scientific or otherwise, one question will inevitable develop more questions. And the obvious and ultimate why question is, why am I here? Science cannot answer this question, because scientific method does not set out to answer such questions. This is the realm of philosophy, and there will be many discussions and debates about this subject in philosophical circles. But there is one discipline which has this question at it’s heart. Theology. The stories of creation in the Bible are written with the why question in mind. There is no thought of how. There is no attempt to be scientific here. There is only the attempt to answer why. True knowledge, comes from asking different types of questions, with different methods of inquiry. Science and Theology are close cousins, both seeking the same thing. The trust about our world, and all of us in it. Rev Paul Fox Revpaul.fox@gmail.com
