Welcome to the May issue of The Ackworth Arrow.

As the Arrow goes to print, we are basking in heat not seen in April since 1949. What a treat, let’s hope it continues! Wow, I am thinking about how quickly time goes by as we approach the Summer then realise, the last Tour De Yorkshire was 2 years ago! We lined up on Bawtry Road in Doncaster and watched the men race past towards the finish in Bennethorpe. It was really exciting and I am looking forward to this year’s event on 3rd and 4th May. Ackworth Cricket Club hosts a family fun day on Sunday 20th May to raise funds for local Ivy-Louise Gawthorpe who needs specialist treatment in America. The organisers have done a great job with the entertainment on offer so should be a great day out for all the family. The deadline for the June issue will be Wednesday 16th May. The June Arrow will be delivered by the last weekend in May.

KENYA 2018 THE RETURN TRIP

Following the success of Kenya 2014, 10 members of 1st Ackworth and 1st Ossett Boys’ Brigade Companies returned to Kisumu, Kenya, in February, to work with The Isaiah Trust, a registered charity helping street children and poor, desperate people make a new beginning. The trip proved equally hard work, but successful and rewarding, as the team left feeling they had, once again, made a difference to the lives of these wonderful people. The group had raised over £4000 through just giving, and this money was used to buy equipment and develop new land owned by The Trust at Kakamega, a town 40 miles North of Kisumu. Two steel towers were constructed, installed and water tanks fitted on top. A well was sunk 50 feet to the water table, brick lined and capped off. Into this a solar powered pump was lowered which would then feed the tanks, to provide sanitation water to a house still under construction and drip feed irrigation to raised beds created by the team from Yorkshire, digging the hard ground in 30 degree temperatures. (they were helped enormously by local workers, paid a small wage just to put a meal on the home table.) It is hoped the house will be completed in the next 3-6 months, along with tin hut dormitories for the boys cared for by The Trust. A new self sufficient home and farm for them to carry on the wonderful work. Part of the money was also used in the outreach programme provided by The Trust, paying for lunch after an emotional service at the Tin Hut church at Kachok, the site of Kisumu’s main rubbish dump. Chicken stew, chapatis, rice and sodas, served up by the team, was enjoyed by more than 50 children and adults, many of whom coming from incredibly poor local communities, or even off the rubbish dump itself, where they scavenge for food or material that can be sold to the local recycling plants. Meals such as this would be very rare. The money also paid for some new plastic garden chairs to be used for future services in the tin hut church. The group also treated the young children in the care of The Trust to a meal at the fish huts on the shores of Lake Victoria, and a trip to an impala sanctuary, where they also enjoyed ball games, frizbees, diabalo and chase the local monkey troup. Sometimes the most enjoyable activity is just sharing time together. Perhaps the most rewarding day of the trip was taking Messy Church to the rubbish dump at Kachok. With a theme of journeys, the team brought 3 hours of crafts, drama, songs, readings, prayers and food to the congregation of exited children and more than

enthusiastic adults alike. The team had worked hard preparing for this but it was still uncertain whether it could be done in such inhospitable surroundings. The purchase of a large plastic sheet and a load of Yorkshire grit and determination proved otherwise. The 10 members of 1st Ackworth and 1st Ossett wish to express their most sincere thanks to all those within the community who supported Kenya 2018 and helped to raise the money to make all the help, construction and fun happen.

Mungu awabariki……may God bless us all.

Ackworth 74 Club

Raise Funds for

Yorkshire

Air Ambulance! At the April Meeting of the Ackworth 74 Club, 44 Members enjoyed a very interesting and informative talk, expertly delivered, by Volunteer Presenter Tracy Gregory. The Air Ambulance, now based at Nostell is very much a “local” charity and is engaged in doing vital work across the Yorkshire region. As well as a power point presentation, Tracy brought along merchandise to sell and accepted donations from Members towards the Charity funds. The evening was very successful indeed raising £227 for the Charity which, together with a donation from Club Funds of £150 made it a very worthwhile venture for the Club and the Air Ambulance!

SPRING INTO SUMMER CLEAN REFRESH REVIVE

The Yorkshire Air Ambulance needs to raise £12,000 a day to keep the helicopters flying and enabling the service to go on meeting the needs of critically sick and injured people in our area. The Yorkshire Air Ambulance is the chosen Charity for the Tour do Yorkshire. To find out how you can help the YAA go to www.yaa.org.uk or Call 01422 237900 ***********************************

‘Made in Ackworth’

Artwalk

19/20th May & 28/29th Oct

FAMILY FUN DAY Ackworth’s inaugural artwalk is set to take place on a sunny weekend in May (we’ve scheduled some sunshine in). We knew there must be a number of creatives in the village so the call was put out to showcase the community’s talents and an amazing cross section of the arts has resulted and ‘Made in Ackworth’ formed. We have everything from textiles, painting, wrought iron, kiln fused glass, photography, literature and engraving to detailed 3D landscape models. All work is original and handmade with prices to suit all pockets and some of our creatives also run classes. We are hoping this will grow and become an annual spring/autumn event with a donation from each sale of work going to a local cause, this year helping to raise money for Ivy-Louise Gawthorpe and her treatment for neuroblastoma. Brackenhill allotments are giving guided tours, including information about the WW11 areas and also judging our art competition with proceeds from the entry fee also going to Ivy-Louise. Ackworth School have generously opened their doors for those without studio space and 3 pupils have even created the artwalk map for us! So come and explore the village and open studios (look out for our bunting), support our art community and help raise some funds for a good cause. Find all the details at www.madeinackworth.co.uk maps will be available in the library, Co op, Wakefield One and other local outlets.

COMMUNITY NEWS Ivy-Louise Gawthorpe Aged only 14 month’s, Ivy-Louise Gawthorpe from Ackworth, was diagnosed with neuroblastoma in January this year after it was discovered that a tumour above her adrenal gland had spread across her body. Ivy-Louise has been given a 50—50 chance of survival. Her Mother, Kerri-Lee Gawthorpe was devastated to find that her daughter was suffering from the same condition as 6 year old Bradley Lowery from Sunderland. Ivy-Louise’s family are receiving support from the foundation set up in Bradley’s name and they have launched a fund raising campaign to raise £200,000 for specialist treatment in America. Ivy-Louise is currently receiving intense chemotherapy treatment. Her parents, Kerri-Lee and Jamie, are hoping that once the treatment has been completed in this country, Ivy-Louise can travel to America for a special vaccine which is believed to prevent a relapse from neuroblastoma. The treatment is going well and the tumour has shrunk by 50% which has made a big difference to Ivy-Louise. Her Mum, Kerri-Lee said ‘From being poorly like she was to how she is now, she is million times better, it’s like she is back to being herself again’. There is a family Fun day to be held at Ackworth Cricket Club on 20th May to raise funds for Ivy-Louise’s treatment in America.
